Barack Obama Vows to Keep American People Safe

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:32 am

Prepare to be reassured. Barack Obama has vowed to keep you safe:

President Barack Obama today vowed to protect the American people while staying true to American values.

Speaking at the National Archives, Obama said his most important responsibility is to keep the American people safe.

“This responsibility is only magnified in an era when an extremist ideology threatens our people and technology gives a handful of terrorists the potential to do us great harm,” Obama said.

You already see where this is going, don’t you?

President Obama admitted Tuesday that the five terrorists he traded for US Army POW Bowe Bergdahl could “absolutely” take up arms against America again — as reports said the Taliban commanders were roaming free in Qatar and could return to Afghanistan as early as next year.

“Is there the possibility of some of them trying to return to activities that are detrimental to us? Absolutely,” Obama said during a news conference in Poland.

It’s kind of like all his other “vows,” isn’t it?

P.S. Michelle Malkin has more details about Bergdahl’s apparent desertion, and the fallout from it, here. The most interesting detail: her source puts the number of soldiers who died looking for Bergdahl at eight. Not two, and not six, but eight.

UPDATE: The White House is now accusing Bergdahl’s fellow platoon members of lying about him.

Chuck Todd told Matt Lauer on Wednesday that the White House was “caught flat-footed” on the backlash against the prisoner swap for Sergeant Bergdahl.

“I’ve had a few aides describe it to me as ‘we didn’t know that they were going to Swift Boat Bergdahl’,” Todd said.

They are apparently unaware that the term “Swift Boat” is actually shorthand for “tell the truth about.”

They’ll have a problem with this, given that then PFC Bergdahl was missing from guard duty, and that’s part of the record.

  9. They overruled or purposely didn’t discuss this swap with anyone who would or could have stopped it, or could have enlighted the callow freshman in teh WH about military culture and the predictible coming buzz saw over Bergdahl.
However, America needs to stay laser focused on the release back into the fight of 5 dangerous high level terrorist commanders which this man in the WH engineered and bragged about. A president who loves his country and countrymen and wants to “keep them safe” would not have done this.

  15. Longtime reader, first-time commenter. Patt, as a South Bay guy, you might be interested to know that yesterday, Torrance elected our own Bergdahl/Kerry-esque “Manchurian Candidate” to City Council: Tim Goodrich, an Iraq War veteran turned big-time radical anti-war activist. Of course, the second part of that sentence did not make it into any of his campaign materials. He ran, fradulently, as a proud Iraq War veteran. Here’s a blog post (which Goodrich tried to get shut down) detailing some of the lowlights of his antiwar activist career:

Hermosa Beach Patch: Tim Goodrich: (Leftist) Anti-War Hero for Torrance?

    – Co-founded Iraq Veterans Against the War
    – Testified in mock tribunals calling for U.S. & U.K. politicians and military leaders to be prosecuted for war crimes
    – Blocked traffic trying to stop Gen. Tommy Franks from speaking at an L.A. high school
    – Worst of all, celebrated and encouraged troops who went Bowe Bergdahl. Goodrich, speaking at a 2005 rally: “Despite all the bad news that I have just outlined, there is hope and good news. Elements of resistance within the [U.S.] military itself have been increasing. This is through countless numbers of individual acts, but also growing numbers of large acts at home, such as the case of Pablo Paredes, who despite only being sent overseas in a support role refused to go. He was sentenced to three months hard labor. Also Camilo Mejia, after serving a tour of duty in Iraq, refused to go back a second time. He was sentenced to one year in jail. Cases like these are becoming more common.”

None of this would be news had he been running for City Council of Santa Monica. But this is (relatively) conservative, pro-military Torrance. Home of a huge annual Armed Forces Day Parade. Hometown of Louis Zamperini. Which is why he worked as hard as possible to conceal who he is. I live around the corner from him. He knocked on my door, stood on my doorstep, told me his life story, bragged of serving in Iraq, asked for my vote, and not once did he so much as hint that he opposed the war, let alone that he was a major figure in the radical antiwar movement and spent most of the last decade palling around with the likes of Cindy Sheehan.

Our old pal “Armed Liberal”, Torrance resident, was onto this guy years ago in 2008 when he first ran unsucessfully for City Council:

Armed Liberal: Why I’m Not Voting For Tim Goodrich For Torrance City Council

“But today, I decided not to vote for him. Why? Because yesterday we just got an 11″ × 14” mailer from him extolling his military service, veteran status, etc. – and absolutely silent on what his real politics and beliefs are. And I looked back at the mailers we’ve received (I collect them during election season) and realized that he’s fundamentally dissembling about who he is and what he believes in.

And six years later, it worked. He won a seat. Just as the Bowe Bergdahl story is blowing up, just as Torrance’s favorite son Louis Zamperini is finally going to get his due on the big screen, Torrance goes and elects this guy to its City Council. Shaking my head.

No, not true at all! They do know exactly what to “Swift Boat” someone means, and they have in a Freudian way chosen that metaphor. In other words, the White House knows that Bergdahl’s platoon mates are telling the truth about him, and that is what has them in a snit.

  33. i doubt anyone has told the First Liar yet, but they pretty much HAVE to go through the motions of prosecuting the Idaho Talitubby, if not actually convict him, because to not do so would gut the UCMJ, at least as it pertains to AWOL…

    as i said on FB:

i just thought of something potentially interesting that might come out of this mess, long term.

given the WH has already proclaimed him a hero, and many reports say they won’t be any charges, etc, brought against shithead, they’re going to have a hell of a time ever prosecuting anyone for AWOL/Desertion if they don’t go through the entire process with him.

can’t you just hear the JAG defense rep?

“you want to give my client a Art.15 and take rank & pay because he was gone a week? Bergdhal went over to the enemy, stayed with them five years, and you promoted him while he was giving them information used to kill and injure Americans, and then you just sent him home. My guy was in a hotel drinking and screwing his girlfriend, not bothering anyone…””

i checked with one of my former officers, who is still serving, and he agrees with my analysis. in fact, since he’s a lawyer, he said that’s exactly what he’d argue if he was a JAG.

of course, knowing how much Barry hates the US, that might be part of his plan.

more likely though, he’s much too stupid to have thought that far ahead, since that would take A:a brain & B: an admission on his part that he is neither omniscient nor without fault.
    he’s too vain for either.

  34. Obama’s release of the 5 terrorists is his way giving Uncle Sam the bird for exposing his Administration to criticism over Benghazi and personal ridicule for his VA hypocrisy. It’s the infantile in-your-face retaliation of a twisted, arrogant and angry punk bent on a show of contempt for anyone who refuses to shut up, kiss his ass, and sing hosannas to his superior and transcendent vision.

Bergdahl’s a side show, he’s just a convenient excuse, a red herring to drag across the trail to misdirect conversation if asked why in the world anyone would release accomplished terrorist leaders while our troops are still in the field. Obama can’t say because you pissed me off and I did it because I knew it would get your goat. I did it because I could, and if you keep asking me embarrassing questions I’ll do something even more outrageous. Keep pestering me and see what happens next.

  35. “Swift boating” is just a way to say you don’t leave a buddy behind on the battlefield. These guys lost 8 buddies looking for Bergdahl. They can’t leave them behind. Those guys are with them everyday.

Perhaps if Obama thought of staffing his national security team with people besides campaign van drivers and guys with masters degrees in writing fiction, his administration wouldn’t have been caught off guard by this.

  39. MORE SHOES YET TO DROP IN OBAMA’S BERGDAHL FIASCO? Military sources tell James Rosen: Further allegations pending against Bergdahl. See, this is what happens when you tell the military to “suck it up and salute.”

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  40. This Ain’t H3ll is passing along the news that, according to Foreign Policy magazine, there are still possibly three Americans remaining in captivity. One is a Caitlin Coleman, who went missing in 2012 with her Canadian hubby. She was pregnant at the time (WTF was she doing wandering around Afghanistan?!?!) so her kid would be an American. Another was a contractor, Warren Weinstein. He went missing in 2011.

So naturally people are starting to wonder why the deal didn’t include them, but only Bergdahl.

Why five for one? Why not five for three? Or is this administration planning to trade another 10 or twenty terrorists for the other two?

Ace is curious to know if the administration’s priority wasn’t to get Bergdahl back, but to empty GITMO, now that Obama has learned a lot of people don’t like his ideas such as closing the place and trying Khalid Sheikh Muhammad in a civilian court in Manhattan. It’s a thought that immediately occurred to a lot of people.

Several other thoughts occurred to a lot of people, which didn’t occur to anyone in the administration. Such as, why was it so important to move heaven and earth to get Bergdahl back when the administration wouldn’t lift a finger to rescue Stevens, Smith, Doherty and Woods. They at least were stand up guys.

This administration is constantly being mugged by reality. And I’ve been one of the cautious ones, attempting to withhold judgement and reminding people Bergdahl hasn’t been convicted of anything yet. But since I’m not going to be recalled to be one of his jurors and the whole “innocent until proven guilty” thingy is an evidentiary presumption that is really only binding on a judge or jury (if the judicial system really presumed that, defendants wouldn’t have to remain in jail or post bond) we’re all free to form our own opinions. And I have to go with what his former colleagues are saying about him.

It still looks to me that it’s beyond belief he’ll be tried for treason. I don’t see that happening. But I’m persuaded by the soldiers that knew him that he is a deserter and that he did aid and abet the enemy. Not doing anything about that is practically inviting a mutiny. I don’t have a high opinion of the joint chiefs, but I have to admit even they understand that. Which is why Dempsey is making noises about holding Bergdahl accountable for his actions.

Yes, the administration is correct that they had to get him back. But the guy left dead soldiers in his wake when he abandoned his post. That’s hardly serving with honor and distinction. What the h3ll was this administration thinking, sending Susan Rice out to say that?

He refuses to even keep Soldiers at Fort Hood safe. From something that can’t be spoken of. But the kuffar soldiers at GITMO have to handle the instruction manual for that ideology with latex gloves, lest they offend the prisoners by putting their filthy fingerprints on their holy book.

…Alarmed by the amassing of troops sympathetic to Mattis over the last week at Fort Myer, the Senate, the President, and various generals attempted to recall various combat divisions to Washington to defend the city.

These included the 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne, 10th Mountain, and 3rd Infantry Divisions, in addition to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

“We even attempted to contact NAVSURFLANT and SUBLANT,” confided one Senate aide as he packed his Datsun to flee northward. “All we got was laughter and then static.”

The summoned units all either ignored their movement orders, or by the next morning had joined forces with Mattis’ ad-hoc command…

And maybe we will see it someday. It looks like the Obama administration is doing what they can to hasten the day. Good news right up there with Toyota’s recent announcement that they’re moving their US headquarters from Torrance to Dallas. With even more liberal dolts influencing local government, including in places like the South Bay, expect more companies to follow suit.

Barack Obama finally found some criminal illegal aliens he could feel comfortable about deporting.

That’s a good one. But it’s not just a bit of humor since Obama’s decisionmaking actually reflects the ass-backwards mentality of a twisted, malevolent individual.

People should always remember the inappropriately light-hearted way he began a press conference a few years ago right after the bloody Fort Hood massacre, and, during his months on the 2008 campaign trail, his use of “we’ll bring a gun” rhetoric directed at his political foes.

If Obama truly wants to make America and its people safe, he’ll pack his bags and get the hell out of the White House.

  65. I know, Steve57. It’s as if the administration and their bozo talking heads have completely forgotten that planners from abroad inspired and arranged for stolen planes to take down the World Trade Center towers, and to attack the pentagon, and to outfit the shoe bomber and the underweer bomber, and the Times Square bomber, and the Boston Marathon bombers and the ……

  67. I already linked to this on another thread, but it’s so nice I thought I’d link to it twice.

    http://www.nationalreview.com/article/379481/why-team-obama-was-blindsided-bergdahl-backlash-ralph-peters

I didn’t write it, obviously. But I could have. Some samples:

…I have never witnessed such outrage from our troops.

Exhibit A: Ms. Rice. In one of the most tone-deaf statements in White House history (we’re making a lot of history here), the national-security adviser, on a Sunday talk show, described Bergdahl as having served “with honor and distinction.” Those serving in uniform and those of us who served previously were already stirred up, but that jaw-dropper drove us into jihad mode.

But pity Ms. Rice. Like the president she serves, she’s a victim of her class. Nobody in the inner circle of Team Obama has served in uniform.

…Both President Obama and Ms. Rice seem to think that the crime of desertion in wartime is kind of like skipping class. They have no idea of how great a sin desertion in the face of the enemy is to those in our military.

…This is a fundamental culture clash. Team Obama and its base cannot comprehend the values still cherished by those young Americans “so dumb” they joined the Army instead of going to prep school and then to Harvard. Values such as duty, honor, country, physical courage, and loyalty to your brothers and sisters in arms have no place in Obama World. (Military people don’t necessarily all like each other, but they know they can depend on each other in battle — the sacred trust Bergdahl violated.)

President Obama did this to himself (and to Bergdahl). This beautifully educated man, who never tires of letting us know how much smarter he is than the rest of us, never stopped to consider that our troops and their families might have been offended

I hope I haven’t gone over the limit and quoted too extensively. As the saying goes, read the whole thing.

You don’t have to be Clausewitz or Sun Tzu to understand what’s going on. You don’t even have to have served a day. I always went out of my way not to earn this kind of ire from the troops because maybe we’d all end up in the same lifeboat and I didn’t want to get fragged.

Yet it’s beyond the grasp of President Ditherington McBombyMomJeans and the Harvard Law School May Day Decorating Committee.

The difference between a 17 ir 18 year old seaman apprentice and an Ivy League undergrad is that we expected the seaman apprentice to grow up and develop some brains.

    Expect the flailing to continue.

  68. the bespeckled Mr. Will nails my feelings about this tawdry bergdork situation here Mr. 57

This episode will be examined by congressional committees, if they can pierce the administration’s coming cover-up, which has been foreshadowed by the response to congressional attempts to scrutinize the politicization of the Internal Revenue Service. If the military stalls on turning over files to Congress pertaining to the five years of Bergdahl’s absence, we will at least know that there is no national institution remaining to be corrupted.

  70. Mr. feets, I hope you understand where I stand on this. Outside of the Pentagon, below the level of the JCS really, I don’t think anyone would have known this was illegal.

We are operating outside of what was formerly considered to be within the scope of normal, what with Prom Queen being Preezy.

So I have to insist on cutting the troops some slack. And by troops I mean everyone O-5 and below who are looking at this in as much shock and dismay as you are.

    Steve57 (61329d)

  71. Did Obama think Bergdahl would get a hero’s welcome and that would be the end of it, that nobody would look into how or why he left his unit? Was he brought home to face trial? If so, why did the White House call him a “war hero”?

This is all so full of self-defeating stupid that it can’t be possible that the president overrode so many in his own administration to get it done.

And yet he did. He increased the risk to Americans abroad and here at home. He made himself look desperate on the world stage — and one doesn’t hesitate to add the word “again.” He made himself look like the most boneheaded “horrible boss” to the Army and to the intelligence community. He sent out Susan Rice once more to sell the media on another transparent lie.

And for what? All he seems to have gotten out of this is yet another scandal, larded on top of all the others. It’s as though he were playing Russian Roulette with a fully-loaded pistol — no good could ever come out of it.
I’m at a loss. How about you?

Megyn Kelly interviews a couple of Bergdahl’s platoon mates.

They acquit themselves exactly as I would expect. With dignity. They aren’t vindictive, they aren’t bloodthirsty. They want Bergdahl to get his day in court.

If the Obama administration had its way, they’d try to convince you that they are only saying what they’re saying because of teh racisms and teh Islamophobias and teh homophobias.

  75. Being directly and personally blackmailed maybe?

For what?! In order to be a prime candidate for blackmail, a person has to have a sense of shame and humility, and Obama has neither of those qualities. He’s so narcissistic that, if anything, he probably perceives his shortcomings (and ensuing scandals due to that) and foolishness (and ensuing scandals due to that) as elements of his strength and wisdom.

So I doubt whether he cares about, for example, his gay escapades being revealed to the world, certainly in light of his passionate defense of GLBT, and his drug use is something he has already admitted to. There could be some major financial entanglements lurking in his background, but given that his former Secretary of the Treasury was a known tax cheat — and wasn’t hurt by that — I doubt whether a scandal related to money will keep Obama up at night.

I also doubt whether major suspicions surrounding things like his birth certificate and school/medical records would cause him to get nervous and, in light of that, change his tune.

Simply put, Obama has triggered another big scandal because he’s willfully irresponsible and reckless, and also maybe because he so truly despises the US, that if he knocks it down several notches, that will not only not bother him, it will fit his modus operandi and make him smile with pride.
