Sterling Gets Lifetime Ban from NBA

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:52 pm

Having had a chance to listen to his full remarks on that tape, there’s really no defending him. Anyone listening to him comes away thinking: “what a maroon.” That being said, the whole thing does feel like a set-up job and an invasion of privacy.

I am no expert on the NBA and its rules and powers, but maybe you guys are. Discuss away.

  2. He should be banned for having such poor taste in womens. It isn’t against the law to be a schmuck, racist or not. Some pretty strange things are going on in this country, with a focus on this moronic sideshow, when the POTUS should be on trial for high crimes and misdemeanors.

  3. the NBA is a trashy and thuggish enterprise

it was very imprudent for this racist guy to get as deeply involved with it as he did

    but it was his choice

  4. Donald Stirling is obviously a racist tool. That said, is anybody else a little uncomfortable with this draconian punishment? Can all of this possibly be legal? An NBA player can beat a girlfriend half to death or shoot somebody in a club and it barely rates a yawn. I’d love to listen to a recording of a Saturday afternoons conversation in any black barber shop in South Central L.A. I bet it would be quite edifying.

  6. More specifically, a Radium ceo, can do the chris brown treatment, and get community service, they all knew what a weasel he was,

  7. 4. Yeah, it was a rush to judgement, and another sad commentary all around.

    But then 3.

  8. Reading between the lines of this story, Sterling decided to let this, ahem, professional woman twist in the wind regarding the embezzlement lawsuit Sterling’s vindictive (though who can blame her, really) wife filed rather than admit that he signed the check for the allegedly embezzled bling with his gonads. If that reading is correct, she was fully justified in extracting her pound of flesh, granting that she is not a saint and deserves no particular sympathy from anyone with an ounce of sense.

  9. Sterling is an interesting example of how deranged people like him and other facets of our modern culture are, including the NAACP, whose own extremism enables them to be prostituted by both a Sterling and an Al Sharpton.

People full of grotesque contradictions (a guy ranting at his half-black/half-Latina mistress for wanting to walk around in public with black people) and unhinged behavior overall — set against the backdrop of crude, crass lyrics of rap music, far too greatly tolerated by much of the public, and someone like Paula Deen being hung up on a cross — is a reason why Donald Sterling is a perfect metaphor for America in 2014.

  10. The NBA is a partnership, and they pretty much decided that they didn’t want this guy as a partner. All he brought to the table was trouble.

This guy was such an obvious phoney it is hard to understand why this took so long. Back when I used to read the LA Times, he’s always have some ad in the business section on how he had donated some money or was giving/had gotten some award.

Just a prototypical Hollywood phony well past his sell-by date.

  11. Just to point out the obvious: the local chapter of the NAACP was selling “Lifetime Achievement Awards” to an open, notorious racist, and the national leadership hasn’t said “boo” about it. The NAACP has been little more than Media Matters with a tan for decades now, and this scandal and their involvement in it should be used to do maximum political damage to them–they richly deserve the takedown.

  12. he’s always have some ad in the business section on how he had donated some money or was giving/had gotten some award.

I saw one of those ads just a few months ago in the LA Times and wondered why the guy was wasting all his money by, in effect, making a donation to that joke of a newspaper. The presumed demise of both his crummy ads and their helping the bottom line of the LA Times will be a win-win for sane people everywhere.

  13. For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.

Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:

    Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

    And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.

Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

1Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings.

His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

  17. True that, nk. True that.

I’ll just say that while the guy said some pretty outrageous things, he happened to say them to his mistress, which once upon a time would have been enough to say he was not a stellar citizen.
That said, if people are going to be fined millions of dollars and forced out of business for something they said in private, the majority of folk I imagine should start duct-taping our own mouths. Let he who is without evil speech on occasion be the first to bid on the Clippers.
Speaking of which, there has been talk on a number of fronts as to whether this is part of an orchestrated effort to get the Clippers on the selling block cheap for someone who wants to buy them. If so, no matter what happens to Sterling, I hope whoever is in on the plot not only doesn’t get to buy the Clippers, but gets some kind of criminal conspiracy charge on them as well.
Kareem made the point that if the NSA would have been tapping the guys phone, people would be screaming at the NSA, so how about a little more shaming of “Delilah”.

Besides, if we want to get all hyper about evil things said in private, how about when the evil things are said by our officials in Government deceiving the American people:

That should count for something I think.

  20. If they want to ban racists from the NBA, maybe they should look at players, too…

  21. maroon is not a color or a Bugs Bunny funny… it is steeped in the color of racism where dark skin equal discrimination.. but that is OK… just make sure people know you were refering to a nigerian

  22. To be honest, I wasn’t paying that much attention to what he said.

But, I was kind of concerned about the joint press conference by the mayors of Los Angeles and Sacramento celebrating a person’s punishment for what was, essentially, crimethink.

  23. Hoo-kay, I’ll bite: I’ve read hints that Sterling TOLD his “assistant” to record him. I’ve read that Sterling’s wife is suing the “assistant” to recoup the value of some mighty fancy cars.

The guy’s a pig, obviously. But tough. He didn’t get his fortune by playing tiddlywinks. He flaunts the cute “assistant” in wifey’s face AND lavishes at least a half-mill, maybe up to two million on her.

So what are the odds that Mrs. Scorned Wife wants a divorce and says “I’ll take half of your team and RUIN you, you SOB.” He knows the way divorce courts work; of course she’ll get half. And, because he *IS* a mean SOB, he sets out to pre-destroy the team’s value so she will walk away with much-much-much less than she thought she was going to get. (He’s nearly as old as God, and even without the team he’ll have enough to be very comfortable for as long as he’s above ground.)

What is the best way to get pilloried in PC-America, even if you’ve got a boatload of money? Do some overly-candid talking about race. Which he did.

So, that’s my hypothesis. Let’s see how it plays out… (grabs popcorn).

Oh wait. That’s only for ideas we agree with.

It thinks it’s clever. It thinks it is cute.

Mr. feets pretty muched summed it up for me in #3. Nobody forced him to join that club. I wouldn’t have. But the I also wouldn’t have let down the grandkids and hooked up with what’s her name.
