First-World Problems for Women

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:29 am

Mollie Hemingway (h/t Allahpundit) compares some of the first-world problems faced by women in America to some other problems women face around the world.

Among the first-world problems include gendered children’s toys. See McDonald’s Gave Me the “Girl’s Toy” With My Happy Meal. So I Went to the CEO:

In the fall of 2008, when I was 11 years old, I wrote to the CEO of McDonald’s and asked him to change the way his stores sold Happy Meals. I expressed my frustration that McDonald’s always asked if my family preferred a “girl toy” or a “boy toy” when we ordered a Happy Meal at the drive-through. My letter asked if it would be legal for McDonald’s “to ask at a job interview whether someone wanted a man’s job or a woman’s job?”

Amanda Marcotte reminds us that getting asked to prom = sexual harassment:

Who can forget the movement to ban the word “bossy”? That was, of course, covered beautifully by our own Dana here. (See? By using the term “our own Dana” I am perpetuating the notion that men own women and their ideas!)

So there are some of your first-world problems. Some of the not-so-first world problems pointed out by Hemingway?

A conservative Daily Show (if such a thing existed, and it should) would send a correspondent to one of these latter places, where folks are committing honor killings and kidnappings, and ask them about, say, the gendered Happy Meal toys. “Yes, I know, girls are getting kidnapped from schools. You already said that. But I’m trying to ask about these Happy Meal toys . . .”

Free tip, guys.

  9. Now at McDonald’s,they ask if you prefer the Barbie toy or the Hot Wheels (or the Brave-vs.-Transformers toy, or whatever the promos of the month are), with no suggestion that either one has a gender attached. 99% of the girls choose the pink toy, 99% of the boys choose the blue toy, and the sensitive 1% don’t have to belie their gender to get they toy they prefer.

Since the problem was decisively solved years ago, let me ignore that fact to keep my grievance alive.

Just to keep the discussion honest: That picture upthread is of Miss America who was invited to prom –it’s not one of Amanda Marcotte.

  17. The prosecution attempted to make Timothy McVeigh the leader of the bomb plot, instead of Terry Nichols, who obviously was. When he left for the Phillipines Terry Nichols left a letter with his ex-wife Lana PAdilla, to be given to Timothy McVeigh in the event he didn’t come back. (why would he not come back? Experimenting with explosives, of course) Lana Padilla, naturally, opened it up right away. It told McVeigh he was on his own (and I think the subtext was to go ahead)

    Heh.

Dana is one of those names that can be used by either sex, but for whatever reason, I had it in my own head that Dana was a guy. Then with Patterico’s commentary above, I figured I got it wrong, misinterpreted the clues somewhere. Good thing that Dana cleared it up.

Now, how is it that Patterico has guest posters that he doesn’t even know their gender? I recall him being a little put out that he wasn’t aware that Aaron Worthing / Walker was posting here under a pseudonym, so I am surprised he isn’t more on top of this kind of thing.

So, even if it is a little over the top, how did it become a story that some 17 yo invited a Miss America to the prom, and why did it become a story?
I think many of the first ask-a-celebrity invites were often people who were seriously ill or some such, IIRC.

Oh well, as the point is made, there are many more important things to be concerned about.

    MD in Philly (f9371b)

  51. One of the problems that first-world women have in America (if indeed, we’re still a first-world country) is that we have a President who wants to transform us into a third-world country.

You obviously want to transform the nation, but the sentiment cuts both ways; after all, we want to transform you, too.

  53. ==how did it become a story that some 17 yo invited a Miss America to the prom, and why did it become a story?==

Because, MD, they suspended him from school for doing it. (He didn’t even have a toy gun.) And then, idiot Amanda Marcotte weighed in on Twitter by calling what he did “sexual harassment of older women”. You are most correct that it should never have become a story. But this is how/why it did.

    elissa (9e7de1)

  54. I feel like this is unfair to the “first world problem” meme. First world problems are real problems, though ones that we should be grateful we have the luxury of being annoyed by them. When the bodega seems to have every flavor of Snapple™ except the ones I like, that’s really annoying. When the closest legal parking spot I can find is over a mile from home, that’s a problem. When my net connection is flaky and my computer is running like molasses, it pisses me right off. In the greater scheme of things these are trivial concerns. When my father was starving in Samarkand under Stalin, he would have given anything to have my problems. But that doesn’t make them go away, or be less annoying. A sore arm beats cancer, but it’s still a sore arm.

The “problems” you present here, though, aren’t first world problems, they’re made up problems. They’re not problems at all, for anybody. The outrage at them is manufactured. I suppose it’s a first world problem that some people are so bored they’re desperate for something to feel offended at, and can’t think of anything so they’re driven to invent something. But the problem isn’t with the world, it’s with them. They just need to let go of the chips on their shoulders and enjoy their problem-free lives — or grouse about whatever actual problems they may have, however trivial.

So, conceivably a person could demand that a trip to Botswana be covered.

Successful applicants will serve as sworn Deputy District Attorneys with responsibilities that include handling daily criminal calendars, handling various motions, trying misdemeanor jury trials, and conducting legal research. These are FULL TIME positions that require a minimum commitment of six months and may continue for up to one year. Due to budgetary constraints, the Marin County District Attorney’s Office is unable to hire successful applicants at the conclusion of their uncompensated term. Successful applicants may not engage in the practice of law outside of the office during their uncompensated term.

Do you folks know of any reputable people/outfits that essentially do “IT management” of home computers from a distance online? Obviously, giving someone access to your computer would require total confidence. Maybe there is an alternative. Over the last 15 years I have episodically put in the time to become knowledgeable about various spyware and malware, etc., but it is not on my radar screen to keep on top of. I would rather find a reputable person to say, “Use this, better yet, let me install it for you and optimize the settings”.

Nice link. It seems the guy is taking it in stride, and not delusional to think there was much of a chance of success, and more understanding and forgiving of the school administration than they are of him.
Who knows, maybe after being suspended, Miss America will have a change of heart and go on a date with him…
He also apparently realizes there is a downside, what girl wants to be thought of as “second choice”, even if first choice was Miss America.

Regarding IT, I know that so much of what we get for free on the internet is because of all of the income from ads, but some places are just getting ridiculous not only with static ads, but video in this corner, banner ads going across the screen down there, music coming from somewhere and you don’t know how it shut it off other than just muting your computer.
I wonder if there is a market, and if it is possible, to provide “Pure Internet Content”. I know there is the ability to stop some Pop Up ads, etc., but still. I wonder how much I would be willing to pay to get internet that was ad free.

  90. dale, On your suggestion I think I just visited ThinkProgress for the first time.
    From the article:
And it’s not just that boys are more likely to be paid by their parents, but they also get more money. One study found that boys spent just 2.1 hours a week on chores and made $48 on average, while girls put in 2.7 hours to make $45.

I want to know where they found youth getting that kind of allowance.

  91. Just to reiterate, I also use Opera. I like it, too, but I installed Ghostery web tracking browser and that can make it act sort of hinkey. For instance I can’t open my email unless I turn ghostery off.

One of the things I like about Opera is that it’s a Norwegian company. They may be a bunch of Stalinists who fire people for thoughtcrime and wrongspeak just like the Mozilla crowd. But if they are they’re Norwegian Stalinists which means I’m not contributing to the success of American Stalinists. And that’s got to count for something.

I mean Google Chrome? Is it really a step up to uninstall Firefox in protest and then use its partner in crime?
