Piers Morgan Gets the Axe

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:54 pm

Politico is reporting:

CNN President Jeff Zucker has decided to bring an end to Piers Morgan’s low-rated primetime show, network sources told POLITICO on Sunday. “Piers Morgan Live” could end as early as next month, though Morgan may stay with the network in another role.

Morgan, a former British tabloid editor, replaced Larry King in the 9 p.m. hour three years ago, prior to Zucker’s tenure as president. His show earned consistently low ratings, registering as few as 50,000 viewers in the 25-to-54 year-old demographic earlier this week.

Where will I go to get my fix of insufferable smugness with a British accent?

  1. Awwwww.

    Patterico (9c670f)

  2. I’ll give him his much: in the Politico piece he does seem to understand that lots of us Americans don’t want to be lectured by a smarmy Brit twit. And he seems to readily acknowledge that this rating were in the toilet and he doesn’t try to blame anyone else for it.

But good riddance to him all the same.

  3. Should be “I’ll give him this much. . .”

  6. and don’t come back now, ya heah?

    redc1c4 (abd49e)

  7. but we all really missed a chance here to tune into his show, reaching across to the other side and establishing a dialogue that would have eventually let us get to where we can talk about when we might be able to consider discussing maybe making an organized stand on an important issue.

but noooooooooooo…. not you stupid tea-baggers.

  8. For years the Brits have been saying they don’t want him back, but it appears they may have changed their minds. If only because they’re considering prosecuting him for phone hacking while he was editor of the Daily Mirror.

Mr Morgan referred to phone hacking as the “little trick” in his 2005 memoir The Insider, but subsequently said he had no direct knowledge of the practice.

A report by Lord Justice Leveson said his revised account had been “utterly unpersuasive”, but that the evidence did not establish that he had authorised phone hacking.

  9. Do not worry, Zucker will choose another host that is acceptable to the NYC/DC/LA cocktail party circuit. Someone who attends all the right parties and is a member of all the right clubs and charitable organizations. Someone who was in the Hamptons last year and at Tina’s party. Someone who will not rock the boat. Someone whose views are just as disconnected from us peasants in Flyover Country as an insufferable, smarmy, twit like Piers.

And CNN will wonder why the ratings at 9pm are even lower?

They’d never think of hiring a conservative host that people could relate to. Someone like a Dana Loesch, a Jason Lewis, or (clutch your little pearls Jeffrey) a Sarah Palin? That might get Jeffrey snubbed by all those right-thinking people in NYC.

  14. Where will I go to get my fix of insufferable smugness with a British accent?

And a remarkably strong dose of moronic stupidity mixed in!?!?

Never Fear!! Liberals love Brits, the accent makes them ever so blatantly more intelligent than any liberal could ever hope to be.

Morgan will land on his feet, and some news organization will be glad to have someone soooooo much smarter than anyone else working there to tell them what to think.

  15. Since I have never watched Mr Morgan’s show, whether he stays or goes means exactly zero to me. For Mr Zucker, that was the real problem: there are too many people like me who weren’t interested in watching the show.

But, the truth is that they could replace Mr Morgan with Sarah Palin or Ted Cruz or even our esteemed host, and I still wouldn’t watch CNN at 9:00 PM. I mean, it’s far more important that TBS is running reruns of The Big Bang Theory at that time than anything CNN could put on.

Unless, of course, CNN replaced Mr Morgan with Morgan Smith Goodwin; then I’d watch!

  18. The esteemed Mr Morgan was getting his butt kicked by Rachel Maddow, who was, in turn, getting her butt kicked by Megyn Kelly.

I don’t know what Mr Zucker thought of Mr Morgan personally, or whether he liked the show. In the end, Mr Morgan was killed by the ratings.

The Dana who cared enough to look up the ratings (3e4784)

  19. … Morgan may stay with the network in another role.

Perhaps the self-satisfied know-it-all could spend a few hours on national TV looking down his pointy nose lecturing American provincials on just what ungrateful jerks the Founding Fathers were to reject King George’s divine authority over his colonies. A prime-time special like that would make an excellent showcase for Morgan’s peculiar talents and fit nicely with CNN’s agenda.

    Old joke:

The Potato Family was having a holiday get-together, and the three potato daughters
were all at the dinner table with Mama Potato, and, as dinner wound down, the eldest
daughter announces,” Mother, Sisters, I have to tell you. I’m getting married soon. I’ve
    met a wonderful spud!! He’s a Russet!!”

All the daughters and the rest of the family crowed their approval, with Mama says,
“Oh, daughter, you marry well. A Russet!! He’s a FINE tater, a fine tater indeed!!

The middle daughter pipes up, and says, “Well, sisters, mama, I have to say that I, too,
have met my dearest spud. He’s an Idaho!!”

Again the family coos with pleasure at the news, and Mama nods her head in agreement,
“An Idaho!! My, my daughter, you have indeed found yourself a fine tater — a fine tater
    indeed!”

The youngest daughter, no longer able to contain herself, squeaks out, “Oh, my dear,
I am so happy for my entire family, because I, too, am engaged, to the well-known
    TV news anchor, Peter Jennings!!”

The entire room goes silent, to her dismay. She looks at her mother, who sighs, and says,
“I’m sorry, my dear. I hope you will be happy, but you must realize the reason for our
disappointment… After all, Mr. Jennings is only a common-tater.”

    😀

  44. As for guns, there’s some fallout from the Peruta decision.

    1) the San Diego sheriff will not appeal en banc, but he also is not making any changes. Apparently a US Appeals Court carries insufficient weight for him. Los Angeles county, which has a political cronies-only rule, will not change anything either.

    2) CA AG Kamala Harris probably will appeal.

    3) Orange and Ventura counties have dropped the “good cause” rule and now only require “good moral character”, safety certification, and an assertion of need.

  51. This just in: At least one candidate for LA Country Sheriff admits there is a 2nd Amendment. His statement is a bit weaselly, but it does offer hope:

“Los Angeles County is known as one of most difficult counties in California in which to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon (CCW). Of the 10 million residents currently residing in Los Angeles County, only a few hundred individuals have been issued a CCW permit. I understand the need for caution when allowing civilian residents to legally carry firearms in public. However, as a strong supporter of the Second Amendment I also believe in a person’s right to defend themselves, their families and their homes from possible threats; if it is done in a responsible manner. As Sheriff, I will follow all applicable state and federal laws and court rulings as they pertain to the issuance of CCW permits. When elected Sheriff, I will ensure that every CCW request is evaluated on an objective and individual basis without favoritism. If the applicant meets the legal requirements and conditions required under the law, I will ensure that the application is duly processed. In addition, should the request be denied, the department will issue a written statement to the applicant explaining why the application was denied.”

I am glad Pat has ignored suggestions to implement “thumbs up or down button”. Even when a response to a comment rubs a reader the wrong way, the responder has put in some skin in the game -even under an alias- whereas a “thumbs up/down” is worth less than nothing due to the content/context it provides.
