Drinking game … Take a drink every time he blames someone else, every time he engages in class warfare, every time he dishonestly describes the position and motivation of those that disagree with him, and every time he says I, me, my, and mine.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: You seriously have to be a masochist to want to watch this.

UPDATED AGAIN BY JD:

May God have mercy on your soul

It is an objective truth that Justified is better written, and more entertaining than whatever that was that Obama read from TOTUS.

Just another speech full of empty promises, half-truths and Joe Bidens cluelessness.

I don’t think there were any promises here, except to prevent Iran from getting the bomb. (And maybe – but I am not sure it was a promise – to prevent another terrorst attack.

There were some claims of accomplishments, some of which he had nothing to do with, and predictions of the future, and there was a lot of talk of efforts he was making, mostly to help people get better jobs.

Theer was very little throwing down the gauntlet to Congress.

The only thing he was very firm on was vetoing an Iran sanctions bill, claiming that would derail his efforts (Iran said so! well, Iran said actually imposing them would, but the bill would only impose them after some time.) although he credited sanctions with getting Iran to go so far. (not the threat of force at all)

He tried to make somewhat contradictory policies sound consistent.

I’m surprised he didn’t work that into the SOTU as a vote-getter for the mid-term elections.

I wouldn’t know; I didn’t watch. I was in an unheated garage getting the alternator out of a ’97 Acura CL. The one with the 3.0 V6. Man, is that thing hard to get to.

It’s fun and easy to wrench on the classics. But if President Prom Queen isn’t stopped then being able to do black market repairs to keep late ’90s/early 2000 cars on the road may be my meal ticket in this Obamanation.

And in the process, I went to look at the House Committee on Natural Resources site, since LaMalfa is a member.
    First thing there:
Committee Report: A Less Secure Future For Rural Schools.
More-or-less, during the sequester, the administration tried to force states that had received federal funding for rural schools to repay a big portion of it…after a good bit of talk that indicated that this was not proper.

So, Mr. President, is this how you intend to give every child in the US a world-class education–by trying to take money from schools that don’t have enough property taxes in their communities?

sammy jumped the shark for good at 1834 with this gem:

The debate is settled. Climate change is a fact.

You didn’t understand? That wasn’t me, that was just quoting what Obama had just said. I just was being very brief, and I did a lot of that last night.

A lot of this was repeating (or summarizing) in brief noticeable things that Obama had said, and this was noticeable.

(Once the debate was “settled” he didn’t have to argue it. He didn’t even have to argue that it was a problem, or how serious a problem it was, or what kind of a problem it was, or what to do about it, except it seemed to be the usual – if you were into the subject you would understand what he really meant.)

If you really understood it, you’d also know all this was completely futile from the point of view of making a detectable difference in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, let alone any diverting of the future actual climate from its path.

But the Kantian imperative you know….

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categorical_imperative

Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.[1]

…is to do things that if everybody else did, things would be best for the most people, never mind if all other people actually do it, and they have a sort of like a half theory that if every area in the world did the same thing…

….actually nothing much would happen, but let’s pretend we’re right at a tipping point.

    This ignores chaos theory.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory

The weather is a classic example of chaos theory.

What that means is there is no tipping point, and there is no straw that breaks the camel’s back, what happens as a result of s,mall chanmges is unpredictable and may be the opposite of what you think.

    Sammy Finkelman (8b8667)

  331. 330. 331 The point is myRA, because it would pay low interest rates, is a terrible investment in a retirement account.

What matters even more than how much money is put aside, is what it is invested in, and relatively small cap stocks that pay a dividend that are listed on the New York Stock exchange, or a mutual fund based on them, are one of the best investments over the long run, even though there can be 5-year or longer periods over which you loe money, and just about the worst thing you could do is long term Treasuries or savings bonds.

But Obama doesn’t know this. I mean he actually doesn’t know this. His financial disclosures before he became president proved it.

    Sammy Finkelman (8b8667)

  332. That statement about climate change being settled was his excuse for proposing something which he didn’t detail, but I think is part of what Mitch McConnell calls the “war on coal,” probably something to make it difficult to retrofit coal fired electric power plants.

Obama touted natural gas – as a bridge fuel. And proposed something about refueling stations selling natural gas. There must be a back story about that.

It’s hard to imagine gasoline stations selling, not the usual gasoline, not diesel, not propane, but natural gas. I think natural gas can be used for buses.

This is all something high-tech, which I think he likes.

Now all this is not really a really a government program. It was/is mostly happening by itself.

And in touching on the subject of natural gas, he avoiding alerting people to a controversy:

Fracking is supposed to be very bad, never mind that it is actually occurring in many states with no bad consequences, except for small earthquakes.

But no water pollution, which, if it happens is because of what goes on at the wellhead.

New York’s Governor Cuomo is perpetually studying it, while it goes on with no problems in Pennsylvania. But I think it’s being held up also in California and maybe one other state. Obama said nothing about this. Why attract controversy?

But he was praising the increase in the supply of natural gas, which basically comes from fracking. It’s also not being done much, if at all, on federal land.

He also touted solar, and said every installation of solar panels has to be done in the USA.

(There’s also the business of China possibly subsidizing their manufacture, but that being a fact that didn’t fit into his speech, he didn’t get into it.)

They were the time that Google showed when I entered the word Temperature plus the name of the city in the search box.

I think that is supposed to be the current temperature – therefore the temperature at 12 pm or 1 pm Eastern Standard time, which is alaska is I think 4 pr 5 hours behind.

Now I am not sure it is the city for each location.

When commenting on “how cold is it”, we usually talk about the low temp recorded for the day, and I think the interior of Alaska is now in the -40F area.

I am not sure hat’s right. Alaska is warmer because it is to the west of the cold air.

It is colder than California or the state of Washington, but it seems to be warmer than Louisiana, or at least some of it is. Nome, all the way out to the west, was warmest.

A brief history of Atlanta’s snow horrors

The brief history only goes back to 1973. I’m sure if I tried, I could document January thru March storms like this going back further.

    Does this sound familiar?

Some may remember 1982. Jan. 11 that year began cold and blustery. Snow was forecast, and temperatures had hovered around freezing and dipped into the teens at night. The flakes began falling in midafternoon, just as people started fleeing their offices to beat the storm home. But it was too late. Roads were at a standstill, prompting some to abandon their cars and set out on foot across a terrain that, by then, was so cold and forbidding it would have turned Admiral Peary back from his quest to find the North Pole.

Barack Obama’s SOTU audience did not grow 9.7%. (This isn’t even accounting for the .7% or so the census bureau estimates the US population grew in 2011, 2012, and 2013.) So as a percentage of the US population his audience shrank compared to the lamest of the lame duck’s.

You can go to http://www.rice.house.gov to sign up as a “citizen co-sponsor” of Congressman Rice’s resolution, as well as contact your own Congressman. Apparently Boehner is not too eager to do this, hence the need to get enough cosponsor from the House as well as popular support.

    Specific points of action are:
    • His implementation of the DREAM Act legalizing illegal immigrants by executive order
    • His waiver of the employer mandate on ObamaCare
    • His ruling that education and training, rather than actual employment at a job, satisfies the work requirement under welfare reform
    • His rollback of cancellations of individual health care plans by ObamaCare

Congressman Rice has now 70 or so co-sponsors on his resolution to ask the House to sue Obama over these usurpations.

  354. I don’t know if a Congressman has standing to sue over those issues, doc, but I think others might. Like the states when it comes to welfare reform. Or contractors when it comes to Obama’s minimum wage decree.

    http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/369867/federal-contract-minimum-wage-hike-likely-unlawful-andrew-kloster

…the Service Contract Act of 1965 requires that any contract for service work with the federal government (for example, security guards or cafeteria workers at federal buildings) include a provision specifying a minimum wage. This minimum wage for a federal contract shall be “determined by the Secretary [of Labor] or the Secretary’s authorized representative, in accordance with prevailing rates in the locality, or, where a collective-bargaining agreement, in accordance with the rates provided for in the agreement, including prospective wage increases provided for in the agreement as a result of arm’s length negotiations” (41 U.S.C. §6703).

…In other words, federal law requires that the default federal contract wage not be pulled out of a hat: rather, it must be assessed “in accordance with prevailing rates in the locality.” While it is unclear at this point what authority the president is relying upon to justify this $10.10 rate, what remains clear is that the specific statute on point — the Service Contract Act — sets clear limits on his discretion.

…a contractor denied on that basis would have a viable lawsuit to invalidate that Executive Order.

    Steve57 (5b9a77)

  355. As I understand it, he is trying to move the House in a direction where the issue of standing is not a factor. I don’t know the legal basis, perhaps because Congress has a role in telling the courts what their jurisdiction covers, or something like that.

There are other people in the House who are trying to get Boehner to appoint select committees on Benghazi and the IRS stuff, so if you have a republican rep you might want to push those buttons too.

    MD in Philly (f9371b)

  356. I’m for the all-of-the-above strategy, of course.

But if you have a Republican governor and AG, then the more productive route might be to get your state to sue (hopefully a class action suit) the Obama administration. After all, welfare programs are administered by the states. Even when they get “free” federal money there is an associated cost as high as 30 to 40 cents on the dollar to administer those programs. It is, of course, higher when the state has to put up matching funds.

So they’re stake holders who suffer a negative impact when Obama imperiously countermands federal law.

A number of state AGs have joined to send the administration a letter stating that its Obamacare decrees are flatly illegal. It’s a target rich environment. I think the time is right for this form of action on a broad front. If Obama issues an edict that runs counter to federal law which has any impact on a state, they ought to sue to overturn those EOs. I can’t imagine any court would side with the administration and tell the states to obey the imperial presidency and ignore the federal law.

    Steve57 (5b9a77)

  357. Agreed, Steve57; but I think there is something the House as a whole can do, or try to do, that will put any case from them on the “fast track” to get to the SCOTUS, which is seen as a plus (at least until Obama gets another nomination, may God forbid).

    MD in Philly (f9371b)

Mother Nature is doing her fair share to truly make this Obama’s America, where its chickens are coming home to roost.

    Mark (534100)

  361. narciso, it’s more than an understatement to say that Sharansky knows a bit of what he speaks.

He is of course right. That was one of the revealing moments of this vile presidency. Like reneging on our missile shield agreements with Poland and the Czechs under Russian pressure on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland.

Or our meek submission to China following the sinking of the Cheonan.

The substantive harm that Obama caused by taking these decisions (there are of course more, but I just thought I’d pick one from Europe and one from the Pacific region) has been disastrous. But so has the symbolism couldn’t have been worse.

I’m reminded of the aftereffects of the fall of Singapore for the British vs. the fall of Bataan and Corregidor for the US. The Japanese attacks occurred around the same time in early 1942, and when they fell the UK and US lost forward bases and about the same amount of forces. So the substantive effect was about the same.

But the symbolic effect was much different. The British had been thoroughly humiliated in the eyes of the locals and in the eyes of their allied troops. Particularly the Indians.

    http://www.spearhead.co.uk/0303-jb.html

Singapore: When 40,000 Indians Changed Sides

John Bean on John Scrivener’s account of a shameful episode in British history

…When one considers the noble conduct of most Indian Army units, particularly Sikhs and Rajputs, in other theatres of the Second World War, there can be only one explanation for the treachery at Singapore. There, the British and Australians did not just lose a battle, they lost face and lost respect – for all the reasons given above. It marked the end of Empire.

The Americans but up a hard fight. And they fought and died beside local Filipinos, who were the majority of the troops that eventually surrendered. The Americans forged a bond with the locals, and didn’t lose their respect.

The British on the other hand had not just been (for the most part) thoroughly outfought, but also thoroughly unmanned and humiliated. The locals saw the panicked attempt at flight by the British in their cruise ships and pleasure boats, and except for a few units the British forces just disintegrated. They didn’t just lose a battle, they lost their honor in the eyes of the locals and their own allied troops.

Obama isn’t just losing diplomatic battles. He’s shedding respect at supersonic speed. We can fix the damage he’s doing to our military and our economy but not the damage he’s doing to our reputation.

How come Congressman Rice isn’t including non-enforcement of marijuana laws in his petition?

Because a lot of people who would sign his petition actually want that?

Of course this (no federal prohibition of what a state permits) is one thing that, if Harry Reid permitted it, and negotiated with the House some kind of agreement to put up some House bill for a vote, would easily pass.

Some of the other things would pass, at least without the problem of a filibuster, although they might get tied up with other issues in a bill.
