Saturday – College Football!!!

Filed under: General — JD @ 6:02 am

[guest post by JD]

Today is the first Saturday of college football. If the Vandy vs Ole Miss game is any indicator, this should be an exciting season. Cliff Kingsbury’s Texas Tech team should be fun this year. Georgia vs Clemson and LSU vs TCU should be interesting Week 1 matchups.

I am recovering from a 38mph bicycle mishap – broke my carbon frame in half, shattered my helmet, pretty awful road rash, a couple nasty bone bruises, but nothing serious.

Good timing since Patterico is back.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: I have seen the pictures. The “pretty awful road rash” is not something I will forget soon.

I do appreciate that JD waited to have his potentially life-threatening bike crash until when I returned, for the good of the blog.

Priorities.

  2. Hook ’em!

Hope the Horns have a come back year, not that I can watch it on TV.

Ouch. Take it easy this weekend, man. Have a nice carby beer or 11.

    Haha!!! I agree.

I guess you could be a poster child for wearing a helmet while bicycling.

Too bad, if you are already tired because you will hear a lot more about it over the next few months. They were considering just flipping a coin and giving the national championship to one of the teams from Alabama but ESPN and CBS would go broke without the ad revenue so they decided to play the games before giving the championship to one of the teams from Alabama after all.

Of course, there is always a chance that some other SEC team will be one of the teams from Alabama and temporarily take the trophy out of state, but that will only last a year or so…

Thank goodness it is football season!

  7. JD-
Maybe you can adjust the comment filter to hold comments with the phrase “SEC” in it

  8. I was at Fonda San Miguel last night, here in Austin, TX with my siblings – we were following the NDSU -KSU game on a smart phone. NDSU beat K state in an upset! we were riveted to that tiny screen waiting for updates during the last few minutes, wow! Bad for KSU, good for UT.

  9. Why are you guys so down on the Securities Exchange Commission?? Aren’t they the ones who keep things honest and above board on Wall Street?

    Oh.

Yes.. wear a helmet!! bikes, horses, hockey…all.

  10. I wonder if Pac-12 heavyweight Oregon will be able to defeat Nicholls State. That matchup will be a great preparation for the Ducks as they look ahead to their tough game next week against the Little Sisters of the Poor.

  11. Look at Rice taking it to Texas A&M! Down only 28-21 at the half, could have been 28-24.

MikeK, the countdown to the firing of Lane Kiffin began Thursday night.

  14. I assume JD crashed on a government-built road.
If the government can take credit for people’s successful business ventures which utilize government-funded roads, isn’t it only fair for the government to also accept partial blame for accidents which take place on those roads ?

In which case, I think the government should compensate JD for his bike crash.

  15. Heal quickly.

I’m told that helmet manufacturers like to have smashed helmets returned for their engineers to study.

  16. Take care, JD.

  17. Thanks, all.

Kevin M – already sent mine in to Specialized, with a thank you note.

  18. Yes, JD, heal quickly! Glad you came away ok.

  21. Here’s wishing you a “speedy” recovery and yes its all about the SEC

  22. Bummer, JD. Carbon frames are not cheap. 😉

    Get well soon!

  23. I didn’t know Massachusetts played football.
I guess some would still say they don’t…

  25. Ouch! Healing prayers on their way, JD.

  26. Were you wearing your tiny gear, JD? That may have contributed to your rash.

  27. at 40mph road rash is a given

  28. Had an acquaintance, great swimmer, who was missing from the club for a year or two. When I finally found him in the next lane I waited for him to finish his set(I just go long, being congenitally slow).

Had broken his hip in WI Kettle Moraine, surprise hairpin turns are encountered, hilly and wooded.

I do not miss biking one bit.

    gary gulrud (dd7d4e)

  29. gg- we did the kettle moraine weekend bike/bed and breakfast thingy through Bike Wisconsin a few years ago. Absolutely beautiful scenery and I was in decent shape. But I was gasping for air so hard on some of the hills that I actually thought I might die. Never again.

    elissa (1a5407)

  30. 30. Then maybe a step down is the Duluth Granma’s rollerblade marathon/half marathon.

We’ve done the long one a few times, the half is more enjoyable. The pros get the long one done in an hour, despite prevailing wind in the face.

Duluth has some grand homes, now B&Bs, the food does not compare with Chicago however.

  31. Good games yesterday.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  32. 38 mph bike-accident JD, wow — I am so glad you are (largely) okay.

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family, and geez, take it easy.

    Heal fast JD!

    Pons Asinorum (8ce71a)

  33. DRJ – definitely good games yesterday. Georgia losing at Clemson was really entertaining. LSU over TCU was a typical LSU Les Miles kinda game. A&M will be exciting. Oregon really exciting.

Pons – healing quickly. Should get my new carbon frame this week, then I get to start rebuilding.

    JD (5c1832)

  34. Good grief, JD! Thank God it was nothing more serious. I hope you take care and that the Mrs. and the little ladies pamper you this weekend.

    Dana (6178d5)

  35. Wow, 38 mph-! The fastest I’ve gone on a bike is 39 mph, down the Fred Hartman bridge in Baytown, TX on the annual Gator Ride. Lots of folks can’t take the speed and brake on the way down, but there is an overpass a quarter mile up the road and I always want to take as much speed as I can into it. But Lordy-!, falling down… I’ve thought about the consequences, and sure as hell don’t want to. I got a broken helmet and a mild concussion falling of on concrete at maybe 15 mph.

Take it easy for awhile. It’ll probably take awhile to replace your carbon frame bike, anyway-! And best wishes for feeling better soon.Very glad it was just painful and not more serious.

  36. Hey, and how about that 25 of 27 passing display by Jameis Winston of Florida State. Lots of offensive weapons, good kicking game, decent defense. The Noles are nearly back, baby-!
