Breitbart.com Trumpets Story Based on 2011 Weiner Sexting As If It Happened in 2013; Whisks Away Post With No Correction

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:59 am

Breitbart.com published a piece yesterday that announced that Anthony Weiner was sexting Lisa Weiss in March 2013, based on messages that were actually sent in 2011.

Then Breitbart.com whisked away the post with no acknowledgement of error.

The proof remains at Weasel Zippers, which quoted the now-disappeared Breitbart.com post in a post titled Carlos Danger Was Sexting With Another Woman Right Up Until He Announced His Run For NYC Mayor…

Here, Weasel Zipper quotes the Breitbart.com piece:

Via Breitbart:

On Tuesday evening, Anthony Weiner, with his wife by his side, admitted to continuing to send lewd messages to women after he resigned from Congress. He assured the public however, that the behavior was “behind him now.” According to Facebook messages from Weiner, published by RadarOnline, he was sexting with a woman in March of this year, while he was campaigning for Mayor.

When exactly did the sexting get “behind him?”

On March 16th, in an exchange with Weiner, a woman writes “Nice! Just what I’m looking for….I want to XXXX the future mayor of nyc!”

Weiner hadn’t formally announced for Mayor at that time, but had conducted polling on the race and was reportedly considering making a run. On March 16th, the date of the message, FoxNews reported that Weiner was preparing for a mayoral race.

If you go to the Breitbart.com link, this is what you find:

Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 7.51.37 AM

No correction. No acknowledgment of error.

Even though it turns out that the messages in question were actually sent in 2011.

I actually linked the Weasel Zippers post in an update to a post yesterday, attributing it to a “report.” Then I went to read more about it, and found the post upon which the claim was based had disappeared . . . and that it was a Breitbart.com piece. I decided that they probably screwed up the story, decided to whisk it away from view, and hope nobody noticed. I deleted my update within about two minutes and made two mental notes: one, to write this post, and a second to always check stories in the future to make sure they are not based on a Breitbart.com piece. And if they are, double and triple check them.

I have gotten on them before for this. I criticized them in this post for doing the same thing when they thought a Bono impersonator was Bono. The problem, I explained, was not the mistake, but failing to acknowledge it:

Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone. But people carefully watch how you handle mistakes.

The right way to do it is to quickly, forthrightly, and thoroughly admit error — to move to correct the error, apologize, and explain how it happened.

The wrong way is to pretend it never happened, and to lawyer it up.

They have learned nothing. They continue to try to sweep away their errors away from public view and hope nobody notices.

Well, we did.

I would advise them to start being forthright when they make errors, but I have already tried that, and it’s falling on deaf ears.

I made a mistake, for two minutes, relying (even indirectly) on Breitbart.com without double-checking the story myself. I’ll do my best to make sure it does not happen again.

  1. Sad. I don’t think Breitbart would have tolerated this MSM-like behavior.

  2. A sad legacy for a much missed and valuable name.

Patterico, are there any columnists writing for them who you do trust? This might be a management issue.

  3. They tend to oversell stories and are very defensive about errors. Not good for a news organization.

  4. Shortly after Andrew died (or was murdered) I quit going to Big sites because it seemed like when I did my computer would hiccup, freeze, or spasm. Plus, they seem more interested now more than before in using the Bigs to maximize economic opportunities.

I can’t say there’s a solid connection between my computer’s irregularities and their probing, my computer runs on Windows Vista so anything is possible. Still, to avoid problems I avoid the Bigs which were once some of my regular goto sites. Although, to their credit, when I see one of the editors on TV, mostly on FOX NEWS, they usually give a reasonably impressive performance.

  5. Well, they got the date and the month right of the quote about the woman talking about “the future mayor of nyc!” (which I remember reading about actually) even if they got the year wrong.

I suppose they forgot that Anthony Weiner was already planning his race for mayor many years ago. And something important got lost in the cut and pasting.

  6. That place has gone to crap, and when you call them on it the lemmings attack in mass.

  7. I only go to Breitbart for the conversation. And even then, I usually only read Ace’s posts.

Its sad. Breitbart remains one of my heros, but Shapiro is dragging that name down.

    narciso (3fec35)

  11. What BradnSA says is completely true. From my experience, the Big network has insulated their bloggers (although, without naming names, there is another prominent conservative who has insulated his bloggers as well and has recruited bloggers notorious for big deceiving headlines). Once you call them on an error or a potential error, you are immediately attacked. I questioned two bloggers (not with Breitbart directly, though I’ve seen the same behavior) when they did this to me on Twitter: one claimed that I was harassing him by asking why he sent minions after me and threatened to report me to police, the other cancelled a radio debate with me and claimed he was “too busy” to talk hence why he sent minions. It’s unfortunate…a lot unraveled when Breitbart died. I just can’t see him standing for this.

Their writers, however, do seem to give well-done performances on Fox. I’m hoping it is growing pains, but Breitbart has been gone for close to a year and a half. Maybe they will figure it out. A few more things to consider: they receive a lot of criticism so I imagine it is hard to sift through who is trolling and who has legitimate concerns, though I think not feeding the trolls is usually best. Some of them seem really young or they went into politics at a young age so they lack experience elsewhere. If you are so used to mocking the other side, it starts sounding like groupthink at some point, as opposed to showing how to dismantle the argument of another. Even pundits can become out of touch. Politics is very different now with social media and they need someone experienced.

There needs to be a cohesive, experienced editor over there who can reign in the emotions and passion of the other bloggers. It’s kind of like football, you aren’t going to score on every play – not every run will be a breakout run and not every pass will be a Hail Mary. Not every post will put you the spotlight and not every story will be a vast controversy. Be patient, check your sources, network with well-respected bloggers, feature cutting edge conservatives, and please do not continue to hire people just because they are the anti-conservative stereotype. It’s annoying.

I’m still hopeful. In the meantime, I’ll stay here.

They had better catch on. Frankly I thought at first some moles had taken over, but no, it’s just impaired discernment. They don’t have much self-awareness of the ways in which they are flailing

  13. Well their fact checking was bad, but where else do you get a wider audience for stories like this;

they do little obvious sweeping for trolls.

  20. Lee Stranahan continues to do good work at Breitbart.com, careful shoe-leather reporting. Other than that, it’s kind of a wasteland.

    Joe (b9dd11)

  21. Oh, and John Sexton (formerly of Verum Serum) is also generally reliable.

    Joe (b9dd11)

  22. It’s not just the Big sites — I’ve seen it on other conservative sites, like Gateway Pundit, for instance. Overselling stories with misleading headlines and never admitting mistakes. I don’t know which is worse: sweeping mistakes under the rug and pretending you never said that, or just leaving them there and pretending it’s still true, even when it’s been thoroughly debunked. Either way, not good.

Maybe this is my inner conspiracy theorist talking, but is it possible that Breitbart.com has some lefties in key positions of power trying to discredit Andrew’s legacy by running the site into the ground?

Oh, they have a lot of great people, and in my mind it’s absolutely a management issue. There are too many good writers to name, but Sexton and Larry O’Connor stand out in my mind as excellent analysts who care deeply about facts.

It’s not that they have crappy people writing for them. They just have 2-3 people at the top who have this idea that it’s better to pretend you never made a mistake than to own up to it. Also they treat people like dirt.

Yet here you pretend to be criticizing Breitbart.com.

    There’s clearly a conspiracy afoot.

My theory is that you are attacking Breitbart.com to make it appear there is a rift between you and your dark masters to distract from the emerging proof that all of Weiner’s sext partners were paid by the Koch brothers with CIA money, which theory will be proved by a heroic journalist named Ron or Don or Jon or something who held an important position on a web site in 2007 and has several internet awards, and will break this open unless he has one of his “special headaches” and has to go lie down.

  32. From narciso’s link:

Here’s an inconvenient truth for Liberals like Sheila Jackson Lee—blacks benefit the most (more than whites at a disproportionate rate) from the “Stand Your Ground” laws.

Newsflash: CBC members like Sheila Jackson Lee aren’t interested in doing anything that benefits their captive black constituency. Most especially if that anything would result in their captive black constituency being more self-sufficient.

I’ve linked countless times to a study that shows the average “woman of color” between the ages of 35 and 50 or so to have a net worth of $5.00. This compares to the average white woman of similar age with a net worth of $40K.

As Instapundit frequently notes, beggars are easier to please. So the “Great Society” has worked out exactly as intended.

Now when Shiela Jackson Lee or Eddie Bernice Johnson wants to lock up the black vote in their districts, all it takes is a slice of pizza and a can of Coke to seal the deal. Items of such low value it’s not even considered vote buying.

Unless of course you’re one Happy Meal away from being flat broke.

I’ve campaigned for Stephen Broden in Eddie Bernice Johnson’s district and there’s really no amount of corruption she could engage in that would cause the dead enders not to vote for her. She can send her grandkids and grandnieces and grandnephews and her staffers’ kids to college on CBC scholarships meant for her constituents and her constituents don’t care. As long as the few dollars left over after CBC members and the rest of Washington finish mauling the taxpayer to line their pockets end up getting back to Oak Cliff, they’re fine.

It’s sad what liberals have done to the black family.

  48. I hope the folks at Breitbart.com read this post by Patterico. It is very important to the late Andrew Breitbart’s legacy that the people who continue to run his website attempt to do what is right by Andrew’s name. They have an obligation both to Andrew, as well as his Susie and the kids, to facillitate Breitbart.com THE RIGHT WAY.

Also, they have an obligation to the right wing media to always be above scrutiny, since the left wing MSM are always waiting to jump down the throats of any conservative who makes a mistake.

Additionally, conservatives in Hollywood will distance themselves from the current administration of Breitbart.com if the management at Breitbart.com continues to treat people poorly. Conservatives in Hollywood are verrrry careful about whom they discuss their political views with, and if it is established as a pattern that the current management at Breitbart.com cannot be trusted, then they’ll lose current contacts, as well as access to future contacts.

  77. Every single time I visit Ken’s popehat.com blog I learn of yet another example of anti speech thuggery that Ken is somehow able to set right. It’s bona fide inspiring stuff, even if his sarcasm tends to fly just over my head a bit more often than I can appreciate (but I seem to be learning).

EPWJ mentioned above that a lot of the commenters here could be decent bloggers and was gracious enough to include me in that list. I honestly don’t think I’ve got what it takes to be a really good blogger. All the bloggers I really value have a judicious nature. They know when to hold off, and they know when to sound the claxons. I have had many occasions where I wish I could dial down what I said five minutes ago. (I think I’ve improved quite a bit on this too). Plus, it is very rare that I want to say something that someone else isn’t saying.

One commenter here who should blog is Sammy Finkleman. I’ve given him a hard time a few times, but he does string together a lot of thoughts that I thinks would be easier to follow if he were making his own posts instead of weaving these ideas together across threads. 81. felipe,

I never heard that “it was known” that Jimmy Stewart was not good at learning his lines.
On the contrary, I’ve heard he was good at learning his lines.
Back in the 30s, and 40s, when most films were largely shot on backlots and soundstages as opposed to on location, the films were shot on shorter, tighter schedules. A studio couldn’t afford to have a lead actor who couldn’t keep up with the pace and schedule.

“Rope” was a difficult film, because as Icy points out, there were tons of long singular tracking shots. I don’t know how much you know about film production—particularly back then with the ‘antiquated’ technology they were using—but moving the giant camera was rather difficult, especially considering the single set they were filming the entire movie on. In this film, some cue cards were used to help direct the actors hit their marks to be in position for the camera, as well as cue the actors for some of their lines.

Name it Finkleman’s Malshandiria and I will visit it.

    Malshandria? What does that mean?

In the 1990s somebody set up a conference on 2 BBSs (it went to a second BBS after the first one closed) and he called it The Sammy Zone. that’s a little deprecating, but maybe good. It lasted from 1994 (actually it started in December 1993, but the BBS crashed and the earliest messages were lost) until about 2003, although later it mostly got into computer discussions – mostly to me.

Yes, of course you are right. I say his line lapses were “known” because several directors had expressed dismay (in retrospect)at Mr. Stewart’s shortcomings, albeit in careful terms because Stewart was box office gold! There was a documentary made of Stewart’s career that touched upon this with a film clip from a western. Stewart begins to fumble for his line about tracking someone down and Richard Widmark cuts in with the adlib “He’ll smell them out”!- I cannot remember its title. Maybe Sammy can find it. I had a devil of a time finding the two links I provided.

One of my siblings obtained degree in RTF while residing with me, so I know everything! %-)

Disclaimer: I am a life-long Jimmy Stewart fan!

Sarahw wins the thread! And a lawsuit.*

    * The misspelling is intentional – what you want I should get sued, too?

  85. felipe, I don’t know who these alleged directors are who were secretly dismayed that JS had constant trouble with his lines.

The cue cards in “Rope” were apparently more for stage directions, rather than dialogue, since the tracking shots were difficult, and there were crew members fumbling around setting up the other side of the set while the camera was rolling.

By the way, what is “RTF” ?

    Oh, cool. You’re interested.

You wouldn’t need a new computer and it would be free. I would just try to set it up on wordpress so you can easily log in and write your posts.

You could add the URL to your comments here so we could keep an eye on your blogging.

Email Patterico and ask him to forward the email to me and we’ll discuss what you would want your blog to be named (“The Sammy Zone” sounds fine), look like, if you have a list of blogs you want on a blogroll, etc. It’s no trouble at all for me to help with this.

I used to mess around with BBSs wayyyy back when. Legend of the Red Dragon!

Popehat.com has a recent post about someone who gets mad if you use that name.

  88. That’s actually a news report.

  89. Breitbart.com is following the Obama method for erasing inconvenient information on the Internet.

  90. I saw that last night, DRJ and groaned out loud.

What a bunch of suckers his voting bloc is. I can’t say Americans deserve better.

  91. He probably gives himself eight-foot putts as gimmes, too.

  92. Felipe, in the future, please don’t smear the late great actor James Stewart with knucklehead characterizations. I don’t care if you claim to be one of his biggest fans.

Obama claims to be one of America’s “biggest fans.”

Thank you, and have a nice day.

  93. Elephant Stone, in fact Rope was deliberately filmed in very long sequences – to the limit of camera film magazine technology of the day (9 minutes?).

The film was also planned such that every 9 minute shot ended on an actor’s back or other monotone background such that the edits between shots would be less obtrusive. The idea was to make a film that appeared to be a single continuous performance like a stage play.

  94. SPQR,

Yep, and it was intended to be in ‘real time,’ just like “High Noon.”
I have a feeling that Felipe is going to tell us that the characterizations of Jimmy Stewart having difficulty learning his lines will be limited to very late in his career, when he was on the slippery slope into dementia—rather than when he was in his forties, which is the part of his career we’re actually discussing.
