Open thread on Anthony Weiner’s latest nonsense until I can digest it and write something up.
UPDATE: The key to this, I think, is a) the timing and b) the lies he told about the dramatic time when he suddenly decided to change.

New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner stirred controversy today by continuing to send dirty texts throughout a press conference devoted to apologizing for his behavior.
Mr. Weiner was halfway through his apology when reporters noticed him remove a phone from his pocket and aim its camera lens unmistakably in the direction of his pants.

I am watching the press conference now. If we are to believe these freaks, it appears Huma Abedin helped her husband deceive the public about this, both in People and in the New York Times.
It’s not between the two of them if a) he’s running for mayor and b) she helped him deceive everyone about it.
Repulsive.
Disgusting. I don’t feel sorry for her one bit at this point.

Chris Matthews made a (rare) good point on MSNBC: This was, in a way, Huma’s introduction to the public. I follow politics regularly and I don’t think I’ve ever heard her speak before. He was content to keep her in the background until he needed a human shield against the latest round of sexting revelations. And to top it all off, she didn’t seem particularly perturbed by the circumstances either. She flashed a big bright smile when they walked out together and seemed perfectly relaxed throughout, just like Carlos Danger himself did. The media naturally finds her brave and dignified; I think the two of them together put on one of the creepiest shows of careerism since whenever Charlie Crist’s last presser was. I’d vote against him for that reason — not because he’s “flawed” but because we need fewer people in office whose political ambitions have left them literally shameless. Creepy, all the way through.
Again: she helped her husband lie to the public about this, by portraying him as being genuinely remorseful once he was caught.
No matter how much he tries to downplay this in his little sing-song -this-is-no-big-deal voice, he has not only further besmirched his own reputation but given her a platform to destroy hers. Just utterly repugnant, both of them.

I heard an excerot of it somewhat later on the radio. She sounded really young, although she’s 36 or so. She spoke vaguely about working on their marriage. Why do you think left-wing lech Bob Filner got away with what amounts to sexual assault for so long? And why do you think he can weather what he thinks is just a minor little hiccup without resigning.

My understanding is that the girl thought people should know. Her ID was held back, she gave her story to an Arizona nightlife blog. Who knows whether she really hoped for anonymity, or shopped the story around.

That is so suspicious. He hadn’t delivered any speech like that in well over a year. That’s what one of them in the original Weinergate scandal said.
I don’t know if she was reading up on that, or somebody else wrote it for her, or Anthony Weiner wrote something to her that indicated to her that would be a good thing to say.
They started communicating only in July 2012, and it faded out in November 2012 (except for one last communication in December, 2012, and another one in April 2013, when he reactivated his Facebook and asked the woman what she thought about The Times article about him and Huma.)
Who knows what forced this out? It might be the same people who did it the first time.

^ Another example of why corruption (and various forms of it) is more likely to flourish when the left is in charge of things. The last Comptroller to become Mayor was Beame forty years ago, the last member of the City Council, was Impelleteri, some time in the 40s.
Vincent R. Impellitteri was not a member of the City Council. He was City Council President, a separate and directly elected office whose powers didn’t really have anything to do with the City Council. He was one of the 3 citywide elected officials on the Board of Estimate.
He was supposedly chosen in 1945 to “balance the ticket” but really because Mafia boss Tommy “Three Fingers Brown” Lucchese wanted him.
He had been a “liberal’ judge in Harlem. Lucchese sold heroin and he needed for people to be able to commit crimes and stay out of jail so they could get money and pay for the heroin. This was limited to the segregated black areas and I think a similar policy was followed in every segregated black area outside the south, with the possible exception of Las Vegas. (Black crime eventually came to Las Vegas too)
Impellitteri was elected City Council president in 1945 and re-elected in 1949, and became mayor when Mayor William O’Dwyer resigned in 1950.
O’Dwyer had originally been famous as a prosecutor against the mob, but he was suspected of corruption and President Truman appointed him ambassador to Mexico, which enabled him to leave the city (and avoid subpeonas)
It was a different branch of the Mafia than Impellitteri that he was associated with.
Impellitteri was elected in 1950 as an independent in a 3-way race.
Somehow mob influence was gotten out of government in the next few years. The whole conspiracy was in danger of collapsing in he early 1950s.

O’Dwyer was associated with Frank Costello (Prime Minister of the underworld but also the Lucianoa crime family, which became the Genovese crime family. Costello had taken control of Tammany Hall in the early 1940s through a coup de etat.
Impellitteri, as I said, was connected with the Lucchese crime family.

On the plus side the Harlan County High School Lady Black Bears held a car wash to help out the Bolin family (there the ones who suffered that terrible train accident last month. The girls raised over $500 dollars.

I used to go out to Grand Gulch UT and run to the ruins and back and I used to try to lope along at a pace that felt like I could do indefinitely.
I tried sleeping alone in next to the ruins once, but it was too creepy, so I’d run 6-10 miles along the slickrock in, take a look around and then run back along the trail I’d carefully marked. (The BLM doesn’t do a lot of trail maintenance) Long hot day sometimes
