First-Time News Anchor Curses As He Goes On Air, Loses Job

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:55 pm

I’m sure you have all seen this, but for those who haven’t, it’s a must see. Like virtually all my posts lately, it merits a strong language warning:

Poor guy.

  2. she didn’t have any more poise than he did really

  3. I thought on-air media things were supposed to be able to, you know, talk. In intelligible sentences.

    JD (b63a52)

  4. Anybody know what prompted the expletive? I’m not implying that it really matters — he’s at work, next to a lady co-worker, not hanging with his homies.

  5. these ones are like weebles on an action news playset

  6. I’m more curious what that whole east coast thing was supposed to impart

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  7. we can talk about the tie later

  8. nk,

According to one of his tweets, he was reviewing the copy he was supposed to read that included the name of the London Marathon winner, Tsegaye Kebede, and he was upset because he didn’t know how to pronounce it.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  9. Thanks, DRJ. He needs to go back to school for a couple more years — work on his deportment, speech habits, maybe some acting classes to learn self-control?

    nk (875f57)

  10. Dick Heidt must know some fun pronunciation stories you would think

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  11. I saw this a few days ago and concluded that he must be related to someone influential at the station or related to an important family in that town or area. Why else would he ever have been hired? His diction is horrible and his eye contact is horrible and his meter and inflection are beyond awkward. It is impossible to believe that prior to that day he was ever in front of a live camera before or that he graduated from any type of professional radio/TV program. Just awful.

    elissa (5ce283)

  12. What elissa said.

    JD (b63a52)

  13. jeez elissa it was his first night I think he did just fine except for his tie clashes with the set really badly to where you can tell he didn’t really put a lot of thought into it plus he has that problem making the sentences Mr. JD pointed out

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  14. I suspect he’s a “diversity” hire but that’s because I’m a racist.

    nk (875f57)

  15. my favorite part is how he appears to be perfectly and unflappably insensible to the inanity of his babblings

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  16. I think the guy was nervous about his first job. He thinks about something that will make him stumble through a few words and he just blurts out something stupid: “I’ve now been in 57 states.”

    And now he’s President.

    Happens all the time.

    What? Oh. Never mind.

    Ag80 (19f299)

  17. When I was in management I was rather strict about bad language in the presence of customers or other employees, particularly women. Even minimum wage workers could learn to control their mouths, I don’t think it unreasonable to expect a so called professional to do so on a set where live feeds are being broadcast.

    Machinist (b6f7da)

  18. I just hope he doesn’t have his little heart set on pursuing that line of work. Not everybody can be a supermodel or a football star or a petroleum engineer or a news reader.

    elissa (5ce283)

  19. Micheal Savage said the last two words on air and got away with it but I wonder if this guy was roasted more for the “gay” word than the obscenity. PC trumps decency in today’s culture.

    Machinist (b6f7da)

  20. I’m used to being from the east coast…and all that f***ing sh*t!

    Jim (a009f6)

  21. In Savage’s case the profanity was an improvement on his usual product.

    Machinist (b6f7da)

  22. Tsegaye Kebede, and he was upset because he didn’t know how to pronounce it.

Pronounced as “The Gay BB’s”, he was confused if it was a new type of ammunition for homophobes or the latest hot singing group.

  23. With respect to the national media circus, this is actually an intriguing possibility:

  24. here’s a slightly longer clip where you get to see AJ “go for it”

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  25. I’d watch that, Elissa. Both can get mean as rattlesnakes while imperiously pontificating. Points to Newt for more brains and experience. Would love to see feminism be the hot topic for kicks.

    Dana (292dcf)

  26. I honestly don’t get it. What would prompt you to say “f****ing s***” in front of the boss? Let’s ignore the on camera part. He had to know his supervisors were watching.

I managed to avoid that pitfall in 20 years in the Nav. Including the times I could have gotten away with it, like when Rat was promoted from the skipper of VF-51 to CINCPAC (although not all at once).

The headwork on display here amazes me.

    Steve57 (da9e0e)

  27. Admiral Willard, call sign “Rat,” dealing with some congresscritter who doesn’t understand Guam won’t tip over and drown if you put a few more Marines on it.

How he put up with it I don’t know, which could explain how I never got selected for major command.

Well, that and the dead hooker.

    Steve57 (da9e0e)

  28. Fundamental honesty compels me to say I was restricted line in the Navy, not unrestricted line, thus not eligible for a sea command. Plus there was never a dead hooker.

I left all of them alive.

    Steve57 (da9e0e)

  29. I hear the Swedes in North Dakota have had it up to here with Swedes being discriminated against. As evidenced by the fact there are no Swedes anchoring the news in their stats. They’re marching on Washington to protest.

Word is they’re half way to Tacoma.

  32. 31, I heard those Swedes were beset upon by a chapter of the Hell’s Norskis from Minnesota.

That was painful to watch, Steve57. Talk abut patience under duress.

  34. Mr. Machinist, he never said “gay”.

If it’s not on the ‘prompter, or coming thru their ear-bud, they (on average) have a difficult time ad-libbing.
Even Bret Baier at FoxNews trips over his tongue trying to ad-lib, and he’s at the top of the evolutionary pile (so to speak).

“Mr. Machinist, he never said “gay”.”

It certainly sounded to me like he did. It is very clear at the :01 sec point. What do you think he is saying there?

    Machinist (b6f7da)

  40. I don’t swear at all, but to make such a big deal out of a couple of swear words is juvenile.
