White House to Host “Memphis Soul” Concert with Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, and Others

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:45 am

Great news!

Next week Justin Timberlake, Al Green, Queen Latifah, and many others will perform at the White House in a “Memphis Soul” concert, the White House announced today.

“As part of their ‘In Performance at the White House’ series, the President and First Lady will invite music legends and contemporary major artists to the White House for a celebration of Memphis Soul music. The program will include performances by Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Al Green, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader. The President’s remarks will be pooled press and the entire event will be streamed live . . .

Ain’t it wonderful? Hey, do you think some enterprising White House reporter will ask Jay Carney if this event will cost anything extra in the way of Secret Service protection? And if so, how much? You know, at a time when cuts to the Secret Service budget supposedly mean we can’t have tours of the White House?

Me neither.

  1. the girls will need new dresses!

so this weekend they’ll have to leave their resort for Paris and possibly Milan as well and then it’s back to the White House to boogie down with JT

and some old people they never heard of

it’s sad how we never let kids just be kids anymore

  2. Some good sounds there.

    Mrs. Obama:

And I say this all the time. It’s the “People’s House.” It’s a place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should feel welcome. And that’s why my husband and I have made it our mission to open up the house to as many people as we can, especially during the holiday seasons.”

Except when they use it to politically manipulate the public.

  4. Keep an open mind here, friends. Maybe the White House website can sell CDs of the event online to help defray the expenses and pay the secret service. And they can always send out emails to the faithful suggesting that people put the CD on their graduation or wedding registry lists.

Boy, it’s been a long time since Jackie Kennedy gave that famous televised tour of the White House. So long ago the footage was even in black and white. We have color now. And there’s been lots of updatings since then to “the people’s house”, I’ll bet. Michelle could maybe do a spiffy new video tour to make up for all those disappointed people who can’t actually tour the white house in person due to the sequester cuts. Hey, I’m just thinking aloud here.

Oh, does the AP style book still allow us to to call the royal residence on Pennsylvania Avenue “the people’s house”?

  5. Oooh, elissa said “black and white”.

Obamacare will drive the cost curve down.

Your boss will save so much $$ after Obamacare is implemented he can give you a raise.

His budget will not add one dime to the deficit.

    Solyndra. Benghazi.

You should be ****ing thanking him.

And, oh yeah, you’re not invited.

  8. Really, Elissa???

    We have color now.

Have you learned nothing these past four years???

    Dana (292dcf)

  9. Oh I have learned quite a bit in the last four years, Dana!

  10. Heh. Just try to remember we are in a post-racial society now, okay?

  11. Well, you have to admit they need a break occasionally…flying around from elite playground to elite playground is very taxing…er, stressful.

  12. As soon as he finishes his daily weeping and concern-inventory for the uninsured, Perry will temporarily close his soup kitchen and home for unwed mothers to berate you all. Your silly, tone-deaf, disregard for the fact that a live performance of She-Bop by Cyndi Lauper is the price we taxpayers should gladly accept to ensure that our beloved, enlightened, towering-intellect, and great humanitarian of a president is entertained.

  14. Remember when Obama told Americans not to come to Las Vegas to blow their children’s college funds? It wasn’t for altruistic reasons he said that. He wanted to go to Vegas with his family to blow those same college funds and have the fun he shamed you out of having.

  15. Leviticus #3 – a number of us did try to point out the sheer arrogance of our Pres’ent … while we are astonished by the ever-increasing arrogance, we are not surprised by it …

And the problem isn’t even Democrat vs Republican – it is Progressive (Obama(D)/Hoover(R)/FDR(D)) versus rational politicians …

I hope you are enjoying what you and and your ‘convenient’ fellow-travelers have wrought …

  16. I didn’t vote for Obama in 2012, Alasdair, and I quickly regretted voting for him in 2008. So jump in a lake. Republicans love to complain about Obama, but it was the laughable incompetence of Republican candidates that saddled us with him in the first place.

  17. Everybody should see Al Green perform live before they die. Someplace else besides the White House though.

William Bell, Steve Cropper, Al Green, Sam Moore, Mavis, Booker T. all recorded at Stax in Memphis. Should be laughing at Queen L. and Justin T. for even trying.

  24. I think they do this deliberately, to send conservatives into apoplectic horror. Then we look like raving nutjobs to the low-information voters of America, who do not connect “Adele and Beyonce at Michelle’s fiftieth” with “ridiculous budget deficits and shutting down White House tours.”

  28. Didn’t George W. Bush hold concerts at the White House? Why, yes, yes he did…

  29. Did Bush have glitzy private concerts at a time when the white house was otherwise officially closed to all public tours? Why no. no he didn’t.

  31. Dear Barack Obama,
Thank you for destroying the dreams of thousands of school children who wanted to see The White House, while simultaneously using the money that could have allowed White House Tours to party on the tax payers dime with rock stars.
    You’re a real class act!

  32. JEA, despite being banned repeatedly, still manages to come up with new IP’s to get around it. Hateful little liar …

  33. United States of America! That’s a joke!!! There is so much hate in this country! There are a lot of people in America that have the same cynical mentality as those in countries that are having civil wars. When it is said “God Bless America”, He really does need to bless America. But should he be blessing the whole world and heavens he created.ijs
