Elite Eight – Saturday

And then there were 8.

Syracuse vs Marquette – a Big East rematch. Marquette won the first round, but neither team is playing the same now. Syracuse has some swagger now, and Marquette has a grit and determination that is hard to pick against. Although Crean should have known how to attack the 2-3 zone from his time in the Big East, Marquette does know, having done so repeatedly. Syracuse’s run ends tonight.

Ohio State vs Wichita State – Ohio State wins the match ups at every position. I like the way Baker plays for the Shockers, and Armstead is a good point guard, but Kraft and Scott are a great defensive duo. Ohio State is on a roll, and knows how to win close games. I don’t think this one will be close. Big10 moves on.

  2. Ohio State on a roll? They won 2 games via last second threes against inferior seeds.

You crazy, they be lucky so far. Very lucky.

  3. Yes, on a roll. They have won 11 in a row since mid-feb, including the Big10 tournament, and 9 of the 11 wins have come against NCAA tournament teams.

  5. Marquette was flat as a pancake. Good looks all night. Blue was horrid.

  6. And UCLA hires Steve Alford. So much for that being a premier coaching job in this day and age.

    Beautiful.

  12. We all know that JD doesn’t gamble….as hot as he was Thursday/Friday is how cold he is today….

But, I have enjoyed immensely the repartee…..

  13. Wichita State dominated Ohio the whole game. They were wearing out towards the end and Ohio rallied a bit, but not enough to grab the lead. For the most part Ohio’s game sucked. Play angry wins again.

  14. 0-2.

NJRob – had you followed my picks last week, you would be rolling in filthy lucre.

Common theme to both losses today – piss poor shooting.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  15. Reff – I don’t need $ on a game to enjoy it. I don’t even need a team I root for in the game to enjoy it.

  16. }}} Ohio State wins the match ups at every position.

LOL, well, except the one that counts 😀

    }}} Syracuse’s run ends tonight.

OK, do me a favor, tell me you think the Gators will lose tomorrow. 😀

  17. #3 … LOL. Yeah, OSU on a roll. Right back to Columbus. South till you can smell it. Left till you step in it.

    Not to me 😀

  19. Losing tonight does not change the fact that they were on a roll. Now they are going home. Tis what happens when you shoot like they did tonight.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  20. }}} #3 … LOL. Yeah, OSU on a roll.

Yep. Fried, grilled, and sautéed to perfection.

  21. I guess Steve Alford doesn’t want to live in New Mexico anymore.

  22. Most people tend to do better in predicting the first two days of the tournament when #1 plays #16, and #3 plays #14, et al.
That’s when there are a lot of lopsided matchups, at least on paper.

But it’s when the tournament progresses, that predictions become tougher.

    Elephant Stone (874d53)

  23. There has to be a ‘cunning, cunning, plan’ behind this bracket, but for the life of me, I don’t know what it is.

    narciso (3fec35)

  24. I think JD made the smart pick since even Coach Boeheim was doubtful about his team. He must have been since, last month, he scheduled a family trip to Disney World for the Elite Eight weekend.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  25. ES,

I think the first 2 days of the tournament are the hardest to pick since there are always several surprising upsets. Who but a fan would have picked the Georgetown upset?

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  26. JD–I meant no ill will. I too love the game except when the officials stop officiating on one side of the game as they did in the last 10 minutes of OSU-WS. Want an easy example: watch the missed lay-up by WS in the last minute and see the second WS player alone under the basket waiting for the miss get blown away by the OSU player running down the floor chasing the play. Frustrating…

    reff (4dcda2)

  27. Elephant – I have no problem with being wrong. If picking games was easy, I would live in Vegas. I am just putting these up for fun, it is not like I am studying teams, watching film. I had Wichita State beating the Zags. And LaSalle to the Sweet 16, so it is not like I just picked higher seeds.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  28. Reff – I don’t get how refs call 2 completely different halfs. They called every contact in the 1st half, then let it get very physical late.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  29. JD, you can not be “on a roll” when you pulled out two back-to-back games with three point shots by not very good three point shooters against inferior teams you should have wooped by 20. That is called pulling games out of your ass.

    Rodney King's Spirit (951136)

  30. How many other teams in the tournament were on an 11 game winning streak, 9 against NCAA tournament teams, coming into tonight? What would you call that? Even if they missed those 3’s they would have been in OT.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  31. They were 6.5 point favorites over Iowa State, and 3.5 point favorites over Arizona, not that I follow those things 😉

    JD (3cbfc7)

  32. JD, I’m not picking on your picks. I enjoy your NCAA threads, and you were very prescient in a number of picks, particularly regarding your analysis of certain matchups, such as Syracuse’s zone defense VS Indiana.

I was expressing that we shouldn’t necessarily be expected to predict winners in the Elite Eight as well as we might have earlier in the tourney, since the teams that are playing in the Elite Eight tend to be much closer on paper than the matchups during the opening weekend. In the Elite Eight, theoretically, there should be lots of #1 seeds playing #2 seeds. It doesn’t always work out that way, but there are still lots of #2 VS #3, or #1 VS #4, et al, as opposed to the more lopsided matchups (#1 VS #16, et al) on paper that exist earlier in the tourney.

But as far as DRJ’s contention that the earlier rounds are more difficult to pick, there’s a website that aggregated all the results of the first round pairings, and here’s what they say…

The following percentages are based upon 27 years of March Madness with four of the same types of matchups in each tournament.

•#1 seed vs. #16 seed – The #1 seed has won 100% of the time against the #16 seed.
•#2 seed vs. #15 seed – The #2 seed has won 96% of the time against the #15 seed.
•#3 seed vs. #14 seed – The #3 seed has won 85% of the time against the #14 seed.
•#4 seed vs. #13 seed – The #4 seed has won 79% of the time against the #13 seed.
•#5 seed vs. #12 seed– The #5 seed has won 67% of the time against the #12 seed.
•#6 seed vs. #11 seed– The #6 seed has won 67% of the time against the #11 seed.
•#7 seed vs. #10 seed– The #7 seed has won 60% of the time against the #10 seed.
•#8 seed vs. #9 seed– The #8 seed has won 47% of the time against the #9 seed.

  33. Deadspin had an interesting post after the first weekend of how all the pundits had fared in their predictions.

    JD (3cbfc7)

  34. Averaging across the years, I agree it’s always better to pick the higher seed. Maybe it’s just the hazy recollection of a fan but IMO some years seem to defy the odds more than others, Elephant Stone.

  35. Here’s something weird.

Back in January, a Kaufman County, Texas, assistant DA was murdered walking to the courthouse. His killer has not been caught.

Then, some guy named Eval killed the head of the Department of Corrections in Colorado. He was killed in Kaufman County in a shoot-out after wounding a Kaufman County deputy during a traffic stop.

Now, the Kaufman County DA and his wife have been found murdered.

I just posted this here because I don’t know where else.

  36. I guess Steve Alford doesn’t want to live in New Mexico anymore.

    Comment by Elephant Stone (874d53)

He must have grown tired of not being able to carry his lunch pail as he walked down Main Street. It’s against the law to do that in New Mexico.

  37. I don’t see any details about that Ag, but that is nowhere near the strangest stories coming out of that jurisdiction, but it looks like a pattern is emerging,

I’m not serious anyway. It’s all a crapshoot at this point.

  43. Ag80,

It sounds like a Texas prison gang using the tactics of a Mexican cartel to target law enforcement. Not good.
