Yes, that was my reaction too. I don’t even think it was necessarily clueless; I would never have made the phallic association without being primed for it by the blog reaction. I’m reminded of the old joke, “hey, doctor, you’re the one showing me all these dirty pictures!”

It says something, though, that I was reluctant to post that opinion here, for fear of being once again called a Democrat apologist or something.

I defend his right to be creepy.

I just think he should be subject to the exact same level of scrutiny as would a Republican.

I agree that it was a case of “If you are bashful, I am the Queen of England”. She clearly wasn’t bashful, and he was just trying to compliment her on her self confidence. Everybody in the room laughed, nobody at the time thought it was creepy.

Let us defend the right for people to say stupid things in public, even if they are Democrats. I personally have never said anything stupid in public, but I have empathy for those who have.

Mark, at 3/3/2013 @ 2:29 pm, gives me an idea. We should encourage our children who choose to play cops-and-robbers and point their fingers at one another and say “bang” to explain to their teachers that they are just acting out their nascent homosexual curiosity, that the finger is not a gun, and that the “bang” is just that.

I have to agree with EPWJ. Reading about this elsewhere I thought he was a complete letch. However, hearing the tape I no longer feel that way. He is clearly saying or implying that she is not bashful. While clumsy I have no doubt he meant it like if I were to disagree with someone by saying “If that’s true then I’m Santa Claus.”
