Dorner Cornered? UPDATE: Dead?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:30 pm

He may be in a burning cabin in the Big Bear area. There was a gunfight earlier today and one deputy is dead.

Meanwhile the San Bernardino Sheriff is asking media not to tweet about Dorner, saying it puts deputies at risk. Huh? How could that be?

UPDATE: The L.A. Times tweets that a body has been found.

UPDATE x2: KTLA says an LAPD official has confirmed that the body is “believed” to be that of Dorner. Not sure what to make of that, frankly, but thanks to SarahW for the tip.

UPDATE x3: CBS purports to confirm it.

I am always wary of early reports. Always.

UPDATE x4: The L.A. Times confirms a body has been found, and says identifying it might take hours or even days.

  29. USA today has a story on the sequence of events in the standoff/shoot out. Dorner himself had a smoke bomb the he set off to flee from the cabin, but apparently was driven back in.

He also crashed the truck he took from the older couple.

    Neo (d1c681)

  38. I still think he’s dead, and that they believe he is dead for good reason, but always trust caution from Patterico :).

I wonder how long it will be before they can go in there… There were hints about a basement, even hints about possible escape before the fire.

They’d be tearing the hills apart, though, if they thought he was still at large.

    SarahW (b0e533)

  39. it would be faster if they used that trick where you pour water on it

  40. USA today has some details… The “elderly couple” was comprised of two cleaning ladies. They found him and were zip tied by him in a cabin 20-30 yards from where media gathered for briefings. The burned cabin is another ne very nearby.

  41. Happy feet, in the same article, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, says they won’t let firefighters go near, that it isn’t safe, presumably because of risks of ammunition exploding.

    SarahW (b0e533)

  42. The blaze is saying reports that they recovered his body are false but…

what they are saying is the cabin is too hot to have been searched yet. but it sounds like they are still pretty sure they got him.

I would say that anyone in the LAPD need to treat him as dead until they confirm it.

There is no truth to the rumor that they are taking this long to cool off the body because they have to drink enough water to p*ss on his corpse.

  45. i would move heaven and earth to confirm he was dead asap, so everyone could relax. whatever you think of them accidentally shooting other people, we have to want that state of panic to go away as soon as justifiable.

And it does take a while to drink that much water…

  49. Old wood structure….
You lob in several or more tear-gas projectiles that get very, very hot when they are triggered….
A very high probability of starting a fire….
If someone runs out of a burning structure holding a weapon, you shoot them….
If no one runs out, you wait until the fire burns itself out, and when the embers/ash cool, send in the arson team….
If they find a body, call the coroner, and wait for the DNA/Dental ID.

“When I came across the reference to D.H. Lawrence in Christopher Dorner’s manifesto, it just made me think he’d probably watched G.I. Jane too much]”

I’ve never seen GI Jane so I had to go look up the Wiki plot – and danged if that impression doesn’t seem plausible.

I don’t think he’ll get his wish of being a VIP brain in the Hall of Fame at Abby Normal Memorial Institute, there might not be any left. I do wonder if we’ll here more about how many clues there were to him being very very off long before, and how they were swept under the rug.

    elissa (57ebdf)

  67. I thought it was interesting that CBS went out of their way this evening not to mention “CS gas” instead referring to it as “strong tear gas”. Anybody with half a brain would know that it was CS gas canisters that caused the fire at Waco, and, now, the fire that burned Dorner alive.

This story doesn’t just have Dorner as the “bad guy.” There are plenty of “bad guys” to this story, and lots of stupidity.

Clearly a diversity hire. There is no friggin way anyone can convince me he got into the nav on the strength of anything but he was big and black.

This will not be the hill diversity dies upon.

Which begs the question, where and upon what hill will anything worth dying upon get killed?
