Dorner Being Tracked by Drones

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:25 am

It’s a first!

POLICE plan to use spy drones in the hunt for a Rambo-style ex-soldier and policeman who has murdered three people and vowed to kill again.

. . . .

Yesterday, as a task force of 125 officers, some riding Snowcats in the rugged terrain, continued their search, it was revealed that Dorner has become the first human target for remotely-controlled airborne drones on US soil.

A senior police source said: “The thermal imaging cameras the drones use may be our only hope of finding him. On the ground, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

He has declared his intent to kill others, and has been described as a domestic terrorist.

I wonder if Obama is soliciting memos on whether he can kill him with a drone strike without a trial.

P.S. It’s more than a little scary that it’s tough to tell whether my quasi-joke will be taken seriously.

In fact, it’s tough to tell whether I’m right.

  2. The heat signature from thermal imaging could help identify an individual as opposed to a four-legged animal out in the open, especially on snow covered ground or concealed inside empty homes or out-buildings. And, the Million $ reward is sure to inspire any knowledgeable accomplices to come forward.

I think Dorner’s big talkin’ manifesto is all hot air and bluster, he’s a big cry baby momma’s boy who started his murder spree by killing Monica Quan, a woman I suspect he was infatuated with and when he learned she was recently engaged to marry a black man who was everything he wasn’t Dorner went mad with insane jealousy and killed her. The later cop shootings occured in his effort to escape capture.

So far, Dorner, for all his bluster is nothing more than a dirty little coward who murdered the girl who rejected him and made up a cock and bull story to cover his embarrassment.

That may just be why he’s so popular with some on the left.

(And, sadly, too many on the right. Folks, the “X-Files” wasn’t a documentary. Not every event in the world is the result of a Dire Conspiracy.)

  5. In one way I don’t see the difference whether it is an unmanned drone or a helicopter, which obviously have been around a long time.

I always thought a major reason for the use of unmanned drones for the military was the ability to do certain things without putting humans at risk.

I imagine drones are less expensive than manned aircraft, maybe compared to manned helicopters as well, IDK.

Is there anything a drone can do that manned aircraft can’t? or is the major concern that drones are cheaper hence more of them can be up in the air. Can’t helicopters and planes use infra red imaging, etc.?

  6. If the drones have the ability to launch a ground attack, I expect their remote controllers would exercise more restraint than the trigger-happy cops who’ve opened fire on two old Hispanic women delivering newspapers and on a white guy on his way to go surfing, neither of which was driving a gray Nissan pick-up truck.

  16. I think you’re right, ropelight. Dorner is an ass. His wife left him after a few months of marriage. I’m sure he was pretty tightly wound even then.

As for the drone, I suppose its value is that it’s silent, so they can look for him without tipping him off.

I am also scared that this is the slippery slope we all worry about. Of course, he’s a hero to the left so Bams won’t pull the trigger. He will wait till some bitter clinger is on the run.

    Patricia (be0117)

  17. Doc, drones can generally “loiter” a lot longer than either fixed, or non-fixed wing aircraft.
Plus, helicopter surveillance at that altitude is problematic.
However, if they get a good “heat signature” indicating “man”, they can then send in specialized A/C to get a more positive ID.
    Once they have that, Katy-bar-the-door!

BTW, is that reward “Dead or Alive”?

Perhaps if our Dear Leader completely ignored the economy, and refused to let any of his minions issue any edict that had anything, even remotely, to do with the economy, we might – Just Might, mind you – be able to begin a recovery.
But that would be too much like what Coolidge did, and would be completely out of character for a Progressive, who must personally direct every facet of American Life, no matter how small and insignificant – particularly this Progressive, whose mission is to completely transform American into his vision and image.

The Japanese are now into their third Lost Decade, following virtually every policy prescription that is being used by this White House.
Since American Progressives always believe that previous failures can only be attributed to “not having the right people directing the effort”, and they are so much better, we will probably be consigned to a Lost Half-Century.

  37. I think a major concern with domestic drones is that it opens the door to much broader surveillance.

With a police helicopter, they can’t watch everything all the time. There’s a sense that they are mainly looking at things for cause. If we have 20,000 drones in the air, loitering ten hours at a time, we begin to lose the spirit of freedom and privacy.

We basically already have, I suppose, what with Google street view and millions of little cameras everywhere, but it’s another step away from what I consider ideal.

Plan-A, the boat to Mexico, didn’t pan out due to his poor seamanship – allowing a docking line to foul the prop.

    By: Glenn Greenwald:

“...That many Democratic partisans and fervent Obama admirers are vapid, unprincipled hacks willing to justify anything and everything when embraced by Obama – including exactly that which they pretended to oppose under George W Bush – has also been clear for many years. Back in February, 2008, Paul Krugman warned that Obama supporters are “dangerously close to becoming a cult of personality.” In May, 2009, a once-fervent Obama supporter, New York Times columnist Bob Herbert, wrote a column warning that Obama was embracing many of the worst Bush/Cheney abuses and felt compelled – in the very first sentence – to explain what should be self-evident: “Policies that were wrong under George W. Bush are no less wrong because Barack Obama is in the White House.”…”

A slow awakening to the problem that their sycophancy has created.

  52. happyfeet,

Is anyone you know speculating that Dorner had a spare vehicle, spare ID, and weapons cache in Big Bear, so he dumped his truck and used the spare vehicle to leave the area? He strikes me as the type who might know how to set a timer explosive on his truck so it would catch fire and be noticed a few hours later, after Dorner was safely away and could watch the police hunt for him on TV. After reading his manifesto, I think he’d enjoy that, don’t you?

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  53. Plus, it’s a good way to focus a lot of police in a specific area, making it easier for him to move to another location.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  54. yes – the rumor is he had a place up there in the mountains, and since there are basically just a couple ways in and out of there a timer would make sense

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  65. Mojo, if he hadn’t screwed up stealing the boat so badly, I’d be more inclined to think the truck a decoy. LAPD (caveat: LAPD) say the truck was driven up a back road, a rough access “fire” road designed for use by heavy vehicles.

It appeared, said the LAPD (caveat: LAPD) that he had lost control of the vehicle in before it came to rest, and the axle was broken.

He wouldn’t have been able to get up the hill with a pre-broken axle, and the slid truck probably broke unexpectedly. If there were a vehicle following behind I suppose he could have gotten out of there. If he met up with a helper, or the helper left specific escape things for him, perhaps he did get away.

But I don’t think the broken axle was planned.

He left tracks in more than one direction, back tracking in the snowprints to throw seekers off…
Today they say he has an associate “J.Y.” whose relative owns property in the area nearby and speculate he might have had assistance.

He would need assistance to get away. Otherwise, he’s dead already.

  101. Ontario PD has an armored vehicle on location, LAPD resources are standing-by at the San Bernardino airport. LAPD SWAT will wait at the airport for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s office to request assistance.

  102. What’s the +/- on how long it will take the Saudi’s to test a nuke after the Iranians do?
Who else in the ME will “feel the need for speed” and get their own arsenal?
    Turkey?
    Egypt?
It will be ironic that the Left-Wing of the Progressive Democrat Party will preside over the greatest proliferation of nuclear weaponry, after they spent 50-yrs trying to disarm everyone (unilaterally).

    askeptic (b8ab92)

  103. Yeah, rope, they’re going to wait until they’re called, which means they’ll have to race up the mountain in the fading light of sundown, or worse.

    askeptic (b8ab92)

  104. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Deputies are tough as boiled roosters, they’re more than up to the task of dealing with a puffed-up pretender like Dorner.

    ropelight (396292)

  105. Per Number 61, Dorner was never in combat during military service. He just liked to be photographed while grinning with a weapon.

He likes to shoot and kill people from ambush. I had predicted Dorner would eventually surrender in order to save his own skin. Until otherwise, I stand by that prediction.

  106. One San Bernardino Sheriff’s Deputy has been killed by Dorner and another Deputy wounded. Cabin is fully engulfed in flames, ammo inside is cooking off.

One shot heard from inside the building. Cops are waiting for the fire to subside before going inside.

    ropelight (396292)

  107. Who set the fire? Police or Dorner? I hope Cabin- owners insurance doesn’t try to weasel out with the domestic terrorist clause.

    SarahW (b0e533)

  108. Cops were using tear gas, lots of tear gas, plus it’s cold in Big Bear Dorner may have truned on the heater. Remember the fire at Waco? That also involved tear gas.

    ropelight (396292)

  109. It looks like he’s been SLA’d.

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  110. from Twitter: “KETK Neal Barton: We have confirmation from the Los Angeles Police Department the ex-cop from LA was shot and killed by a local sheriff’s department sniper.”

    SarahW (b0e533)

  111. TV shows the cabin is still burning and the fire department doesn’t appear to be making an effort to fight the fire.

    ropelight (396292)

  112. For those wondering about the mystery of the fire: The fire probably had the same cause as the Waco fire: CS tear gas.

There are some people who know it is flammable – and what’s more not flammable at high concentrations and not at low but only at medium.

Then a spark can set it off.
