Gents, the journ-O-listas are our moral and intellectual betters. That’s what their perfessers at journalizm skrewel told them. They don’t call the neanderthals so we can explain things to them. They explaian things to us neanderthals.

So you get things like the reporters at the Chicago Tribune explaining the AR-15 to its readership in pictures. And the caption on the arrow pointing at the underbarrel sling swivel? “Grenade launcher attachment.”

The reporters, editors, and their armies of fact checkers gone into full “we didn’t really screw up we’re still the experts” mode over that one.

The rest of his record makes sense so I can only surmise someone is using the current terminology to talk about the predecessor commands.

I can understand that as my old AF Command’s name was changed twenty years or so ago, as was my AFSC (fly-boy speak for MOS).

Yeah, but they have this thing, called the intertubes, they could have checked, took about 5 seconds to find out there was no such outfit, or heck they could have actually called the Navy

I think I understand what happeneed, narciso.

I went back to the post at “this ain’t hell.” This was originally reported by a S.D. TV station (not the U/T). The station’s reporter had merely seen a copy of Dorner’s service record. I’ll bet working backwards from the reperter’s notes to reconstruct the list of Dorner’s duty assignments they did a google search to make sure they had the terminology correct. Viola, the 1949 Corvette is born.

I’m sure they had no clue the names of some of those commands had changed. Which explains why part of Dorner’s record still makes sense.

Thanks. When I left active duty and went into the reserves at the 10 year point my second command was a Harbor Defense Command. Back then it was known as Naval Coastal Werfare. In addition to the type of unit I served in, which was a mobile command and control center, we had Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Units, which were and still are shore based commands that deployed sensors to detect subsurface threats such as combat swimmers (i.e. enemy SEAL types), submersibles, etc. Finally we had Inshore Boat Units that patrolled the harbor.

I enjoyed that command and I’ve casually followed the changes as the IBUs received larger more capable craft (meaning thet provided an organic coastal patrol capability reducing the need to rely on the USCG to provide patrol boats) and as the acronyms changed, and consequently one thing bugs me about Dorners service record. Or at least how its being reported. He couldn’t have been assigned to a Coastal Riverine Det in 2006. That’s like talking about finding a 1949 Chevy Corvette. The Navy didn’t combine the Riverine Squadrons with the harbor defense-oriented Maritime Expeditionary Security Force (which is what the IBUs morphed into) until 2012.

There was a det of some sort providing harbor patrol in Bahrain in 2006 when Dorney deployed. They kept changing the acronyms so I can’t be sure what it would have been. Naval Coastal Warfare Det; MESF Det; Dunno. What it wasn’t in 2006 was a Coastal Riverine Det.

I should probabably point this out before someone else does. Back in #186 I surmised that “Rambo” here was undoubtedly pushing papers at a desk in the ashore HQ element while deployed to Bahrain because a washed out aviator with no warfare qualifications would have no business driving those inshore/coastal patrol boats.

A reading from the Book of Obvious: the fact he couldn’t steal a yacht because he couldn’t back it out of the slip without fouling the prop on a mooring line tells you he’s not a boat handler.
