Patterico's Pontifications

Some Obama Photoshops the White House Warned Us Not to Make or Publish

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:41 am

The White House recently warned American citizens not to Photoshop this photo, issuing a lawyerly pronouncement that said, in part: “The photograph may not be manipulated in any way“:

Is that so?!

Upon learning of the White House’s directive, I immediately announced a Photoshop contest, and published a couple of early entries. Since then, readers have been busy manipulating and Photoshopping in direct defiance of the White House’s orders, and seeking out others who have done the same. Good for you! Here are some entries.

From Facebook, with a hat tip to redc1c4:

Two similar ones, also with a hat tip to redc1c4. First is from a Facebook page that is not fond of Obama:

A similar entry is from Chattering Teeth:

From Cassandra:

From My Sharia Moor:

From Jimmy Z.:

Keep ‘em coming!

UPDATE: More at Twitchy. H/t Glenn Reynolds.

UPDATE x2: From SooperMexican:

He has an animated version at the link. Hat tip, again, to redc1c4.

  1. Ding.

  2. I wonder if the White House will send out any warnings about any of these. And if they did, what would the American left say about such “free speech chilling” actions?

    Probably nothing.

    Comment by kinlaw (aa663d) — 2/3/2013 @ 10:48 am

  3. Aww that’s too fake. The president has skinny spindly little legs.

    Comment by elissa (ba90d0) — 2/3/2013 @ 11:41 am

  4. Did they really think the warning against altering the picture would do anything other than attract more mischief?

Or are they having the last laugh by ID’ing all mischief makers and putting them on an “enemy of the state” list?

    Comment by MD in Philly (3d3f72) — 2/3/2013 @ 11:43 am

  5. Might as well ask the lawyers here: If this is a photo taken by White House staff who are paid by the taxpayer, can there be any real prohibitions placed on the reuse of such a photo? I get that if it is an AP photograph or even one taken by a photographer who is paid by Obama for America, but what possible limitations can be placed on it when it is paid for by the public?

Except, of course, the obvious law that says you can’t hurt Dear Leader’s delicate feelings. Racists.

    Comment by JVW (4826a9) — 2/3/2013 @ 11:47 am

  6. JVW, I think the consensus is that the only basis for making a ban of altering the picture is the law you cite.

    Comment by MD in Philly (3d3f72) — 2/3/2013 @ 11:52 am

  7. Maybe there’s some other really important event or news bubbling nationally or internationally– and this silly but addictive photo is a clever ploy to keep the servile media and the king’s subjects otherwise occupied.

    (If so, it’s working)

    Comment by elissa (ba90d0) — 2/3/2013 @ 12:11 pm

  8. Well one might forget the Iranian Guard, supplying the Houthi rebels and other factions with SAMs

    Comment by narciso (3fec35) — 2/3/2013 @ 12:14 pm

  9. JVW, it does not matter if “taxpayers” paid for the photo. What matters is whether or not the White House photographer is a Federal govt employee (and they are).

Works of the Federal govt itself are not copyrightable. Works by a contractor paid for by the Federal government can be copyrighted, but usually Federal regulations provides for the license of those works.

  10. What’s with the muzzle brake on that shotgun? Has anyone previously seen one set so far back from the muzzle? Is that standard for this gun? And what model is it?

    Comment by David Pittelli (7ad332) — 2/3/2013 @ 3:16 pm

  11. David, yes, you can find a lot of examples of shotguns ported that far back. The odd thing sticking out the muzzle is probably a choke tube that is extended but the coloration is odd.

Overall, there is something off about the photo but it just may be the timing of the exposure viz the moment of ignition.

    Comment by SPQR (3407ba) — 2/3/2013 @ 3:21 pm

  12. It would be amusing to see Eric Holder merely attempt to prosecute someone for photoshopping the photo.
As other commenters have pointed out, it belongs to the public domain, so there’s actually no grounds for “prosecution.”

The irony would be in the fact that there’s such a long list of important legitimate prosecutable violations that Holder refuses to pursue, yet there he is, throwing the book at a blogger for putting a funny hat on the President in a photo.

Then again, he’s the same Eric Holder who insists on visitors to the Justice Department providing a photo ID as proof of who say they are. Or something.

  13. Why would a Leftie have the port on the same side of the gun?

    Comment by JD (b63a52) — 2/3/2013 @ 3:59 pm

  14. Legal Insurection gets into the game…

there are interchangeable chokes that screw into the muzzles of a shotgun that look like that. Resident Evil has a set for her Beretta semi-auto assault shotgun that she skeets with. 8-)

as i’ve said before, what bothers me about the port venting shown is that it isn’t symmetrical.

as for the volume of smoke, i do have an answer: Piers Morgan was there that day, and he and Obumbles were actually shooting muskets, not shotguns.

  18. The ports are where they are because it’s a RH gun, but being used by a Leftie (in more ways than one).
If it was a true LH gun, the ports would be away from the shooter (or is that Skeeter? Skeetist?).

  19. 17- Oh, Doc, I don’t think this photo comes anywhere near how stupid Obama thinks the American People are. After all, he won!

    Comment by askeptic (2bb434) — 2/3/2013 @ 5:40 pm

  20. Real of fake, this photo and their demand not to shop it, is possibly the best thing to come out of the white house in the last four years.

I’ve got a few more shops here too:

    Comment by Adam (cd6829) — 2/3/2013 @ 7:15 pm

  21. I have a blunderbuss! Bought it as a kit 40 yrs ago from Dixie Gun Works. 1″ bore flares to a 2″ bell. Blackpowder and a hoot to fire…all sorts of monster smoke and noise…kicks like a mule

You’ll need to be on FB to see it, I think it’s better than any of these.

[E]verything with Breitbart’s fingerprints on them is VERY likely to be a fabrication.

The guy was a pathological liar and crank and the world is better off without him. MUCH.

  42. An acquaintance pointed out that there are subcaliber barrel inserts that look a lot like the thing protruding from the muzzle.

If so, and the resemblance is dead on, then Obama was firing a .410 gauge shotshell in the 12 gauge shotgun. Which matches the mom jeans.
