Woman Tries to Buy iPads with Food Stamp Card

First we had the ObamaPhone.

Now, the ObamaPad?

It goes without saying that even noticing this story is racist.

  1. We should withhold judgment. This poor woman was on food stamps, which means she must be in desperate need of food. Someone in a severe need like that might go into diabetic shock and not realize you can’t eat iPads, which strongly resemble pepperoni.

Thank goodness the government has precisely targeted those in such dire need with food stamps!

  11. People have insufficient chronological opportunity for unfortunate circumstances. Especially with bronchitis. Without iPads or smartphones.

For the children. Can’t you see the injustice? I can. It’s over by the fridge, next to the dog food. Maybe you should put that away. It will attract rodents.

In retrospect, I think I may be watching too much football. Or I seriously need to ask my wife about the mushrooms on tonight’s pizza.

Carry on. Watch out for the titmouse.

  16. Her food stamp allotment should be cut if she has enough money left over to even consider buying an i-Pad.

  27. The following is both fascinating and pathetic to me. It is an illustration of the way that nonsensical politics — of pity parties and blame games (hosted by the left) — spans the world.

Least one assume that the ideology on display in a nation in Africa is somehow unique to it, in terms of its history and demographics, thousands of miles away, in Argentina — a society of predominantly European extraction — self-destructive liberalism/Socialism also has been embraced repeatedly for over 80-plus years. No surprise that country has witnessed periods of socio-economic crisis, over and over again, including its currently very high rates of crime.

As for South Africa, it is sort of urban America writ large—a place on the other side of the globe that is following the classic pattern found in cities like Detroit, St Louis, Philadelphia, Oakland, Los Angeles, New York…

    thestandard.co.zw, December 9, 2012:

South Africa’s black majority directly owns less than 10% of the Johannesburg stock market, a study showed on Thursday, evidence that Africa’s top economy remains firmly in white hands nearly two decades after the end of apartheid.

Despite the ruling African National Congress’ drive for “black economic empowerment”, under which firms are set black ownership and other targets, millions of blacks remain trapped in poverty and excluded from the formal economy.

Coming less than two weeks before the start of an ANC leadership election conference, the study will increase pressure on ANC President Jacob Zuma for more “black empowerment”, widely criticised for creating a politically connected, self-serving black corporate elite.

In June, Zuma called for a “dramatic shift” to redress the wealth balance in favour of blacks, who account for 80% of South Africa’s 52 million people.

Inequality fuelled labour unrest this year, unleashing a wave of crippling strikes that began in the mining industry and spread for months, unsettling investors. Frustrated by the slow pace of change, the ANC’s Youth League has called for the wholesale nationalisation of mines and banks and the seizure of white-owned farms — a policy that triggered economic meltdown in neighbouring Zimbabwe in 2000.

^ I can envision millions of liberals throughout the world who’d have sworn over 20 years ago that political changes — of leftist bent — and socio-cultural liberalization was the answer. That do-gooderism and equality-for-equality’s-sake was the magic wand, the silver bullet.

Commenting about noticing the story is racist, too. Someone who was TRULY colorblind would reject the notion that they’d ever seen it in the first place.

    Oh, but it IS.

It shoots capitalist wealth creation in the head EVERY TIME.

And after all — isn’t the end of capitalism the true goal of all properly thinking liberals…?

  30. Was there enough money on the EBT card to pay for the IPads?

An EBT is a combination of two things: food stamps and cash. The non-food stamp part could be used to buy anything.

I think this didn’t work because there wa snot enough money on the card. I am not sure how she could have imagined there was – unless maybe she thouyght it had been successfully tampered with, or her account or the account that that card belonged to had had extra money loaded on it. If the latter, it could be taht her confederate just didn’t manage to do what she thought she would. But in that case, why shoplift? IUn that case she wouldn’t have been planning to shoplift.

So it must be maybe really, she was faking it, and hoping pretending to use the card would get the sales people off their guard or something.

  31. A better article (today in the New York Post) about the misuse of EBT cards:

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/poor_some_ugar_on_me_0Hq1d3iPnvj2RwpsEDS7MN

A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals….

New York Post editorial, which mentions another anomaly (stores showing phonypurchases)

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/editorials/card_tricks_Et9ly2PsCHKEfLM13HseMP

Of course what this means is that some people getting benefits (which don’t amount to too much per person – the maximum amount of Food Stamps for one person in New York is $200, and the maximum cash is $158, and the maximum amount of food stamps fora family of four is $668 and maximum monthly cash grant is $433)….

    …really have more money.

These could be drug dealers, or possibly prostitutes controlled by pimps (or maybe the strippers themselves in some cases)

Providers push people onto Medicaid, and with the Medicaid probably comes the cash welfare and Food Stamps

Some of this could be prevented by limiting the maximum amount that could be withdraw at a time, and limiting the size of purchases. Of course it might still be on e over $50 purchase every two weeks.
