President Concern

Filed under: General — JD @ 11:50 am

[Guest post by JD]

From ABC News

Spokesmen for the White House and for the Obama campaign say campaigning is appropriate despite the approaching storm, but they said his roles as president and as commander in chief come first. President Obama has instructed federal emergency planners to offer assistance to states and local governments, but the White House emphasizes that during natural disasters, all decisions about preparedness and evacuations are made by local officials, not by the federal government.

Katrina could not be reached for comment. Because, racism.

  9. That fucking asshole actually said that??? Yes, he is my president, but I will vote against him, and support his opponent, and I hope to God that he loses Nov. 6th, because he has NO FUCKING CLUE about how to handle himself with Americans!

He’s right, but that just shows how out of touch he is, that he has to hide behind the actual policies of his administration, so he can lead from behind get ahead of the results of a storm. Seems to me the appropriate response would be that he has notified both local and national agencies to be ready…

I’ve rambled on this, and my anger comes from the abuse President Bush took about Katrina, and my frustration over the failures of President Obama, but….I better remember the most important lesson in life, as taught to me by my Father, Ivo…

  16. What did that black general say about being stuck on stupid? We are all aware that conservative resistance to man/bear/pig’s AGW is the reason for this storm and imminent end to all civilization if greedy western governments, particularly the USA, don’t redistribute wealth and control to the UN and algore types. Doesn’t matter if 2+ billion people in India and China say blow the Kyoto type protocols out your ass.
In any case, I highly doubt that if any really nasty stuff goes down casualty and property damage wise, the good Saint Barack has no responsibility. I wonder how much money will be blown on people scamming FEMA. Heard plenty of stories about FEMA conned in the past. Your tax dollars at work.

    Seriously.
I can’t wait till this guy leaves office. I really can’t.

    no one you know (55e8f9)

  20. “all decisions about preparedness and evacuations are made by local officials”

This has been going on since the 1990s. I think Clinton started it, and everybody in office believes this. He set this thing up. He put these people in.

    It’s all wrong.

An evacuation of coastal areas might perhaps make sense in a rural area. In a city you have built up houses. apartment buildings and almost everyone has at least a second floor. People are in more danger from being evacuated.

All you need to do is tell people to stay off the streets if you are near the water and not go swimminmg in the ocean. Some rare cases may need help but more will need help if evacuated. Gale force winds are a problem for the entire city.

People cvan be told of the possibilities and then told to use their own judgment.

They have no business shuttinmg down mass transit. MTA at 7 Buses at 9. Path at midnight NJ Transit at 4 PM Bloomberg says schools are closed tomorrow but they’ll decide later on Tuesday. Oh how he hates to close schools, like every day counts.

Some schools will be evacuation centers, appreciates teachers coiming in. City offices will be open people should try to go to work.

Elevators in housing projects in the evac zone will be shut down. That’ll show em!

The danger (at least of isolation) is from flooding and that is inland. No evacuation there just at most talk.

This time the rivers in are a little low but tat may not help much.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  21. We have NJ Gov Christie saying well you didn’t believe me about Irene but this time if Im right you could be dead. Or something like that.

They are all reading from the same stupid script.

It’s like we had no stormes before 1995.

A hurricane hit New York City in 1954.

They all have this thing about storm surges This time at high tide.

All people need to do at most is stay off the streets.

  31. ______________________________________________

Obama campaign say campaigning is appropriate

Was that the actual word used in the press release?! If this were any other administration, and if it were one headed by a Republican — which the media wouldn’t be in the tank for — I’d assume it was carelessly paraphrased and perhaps taken out of context.

The very fact the Obamaites felt the need to say the campaigning is “appropriate” at this time suggests that, in fact, it really isn’t. Or whether it is or isn’t, they’re so lame they didn’t even word it the way it should have been.

What’s next? Bowing before foreign dignitaries? Gifts of Ipods with Barry’s speeches on it to important heads of state? Giving a toast at a royal banquet in a totally inappropriate way?

Frank Drebin as president would be less alarming than who currently occupies the Oval Office.

daleyrocks: elissa – I would avoid the ones with the storm surges, but that’s just me.

The ones in the evacuation zone, and that’s probably too inclusive. The city said people could call 311 to find out if they are in the evacuation zone. They’ll also be sending sound trucks or something through the streets. So they could just apply it in that area.

Of course elsewhere going on the streets might be a problem too. Strong winds, flying debris, falling trees, or fallen trees, depending on what happens. But it should be fairly obvious what the conditions are.

  45. In addition o everything else, they’ll also close some bridges.

But Mayor Bloomberg wants people who work near City Hall for the city to go to work tomorrow.

It’ll take 12 hours to restart the subways (because I suppose they’ll do a full inspection)

They might have it going by Wednesday, but Bloomberg has not yet decided to close the public schools on Tuesday. He really hates closing schools. Or announcing it in advance.

The worst of the weather will be late Monday and Tuesday morning I understand.

Nothing really so far. There was a mild not drizzle around 5 but it’s gone. No heavy winds.

This is all being done well in advance. a 12 or 18 hour shutdown of the city being turned into 48 or 60.

  47. Sandy may or may not come ashore, and the President feels that “monitoring” the situation is much more vital than a minor campaign event or two.
But, when his Personal Representative to the People of Libya was killed, along with three others, after multiple requests for assistance, the most important thing he could do was to fly to Las Vegas for a fundraiser.

  48. I don’t know what anyone is complaining about. Prom Queen has fulfilled his duties far as he’s concerned.

    He’s talked about the obvious.

“I have directed the Secretary of (insert name) to do whatever is necessary to accomplish the mission of (insert name) and issued a clear directive that we make sure we are doing everything we need to do (unlike all previous Preezys who apparantly issued EOs telling their people to do what they didn’t need to to do and ignore the important stuff).”

    AD-Restore the Republic/Obama Really Sucks! (2bb434)

  50. This particular White House press release is so revealing of Obama in that he sees himself as holding the title of President rather than holding the responsibility of President.
Even if there were not a forthcoming storm, he is already responsible for conducting the Office of the Presidency on a number of fronts, probably most notably as Commander-in-Chief all the while he is campaigning for re-election. (Insert snark about accountability for Benghazi, here.)

Therefore, the notion that this storm—as big as it may turn out to be—is somehow an unfair game-changing burden upon Obama that just fell out of the sky, is simply farcical.

…and oh by the way, he wants us to know that while his ability to campaign is being compromised, it’s really local officials who are the play-callers when it comes to disasters…(except in the case of Katrina, when it was allllll Bush’s fault.)

    Elephant Stone (65d289)

In fact, back in 2008, when Hugh Hewitt had Carol Platt Liebau as a guest host, she used to talk about how when she was on the Harvard Law Review with Obama, he appeared more interested in holding the title of “President of the Law Review,” rather than actually “being” the President of the Law Review.

It’s no joke, Obama’s endorsement of a sports team is a death knell. Radio talker Michael Medved has had fun periodically recounting the misfortunes that have befallen teams that Obama has publicly rooted for or picked to win.

Even the Connecticut women’s basketball team of a couple seasons ago broke the MEN’S record (set by John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins) of consecutive wins over the course of a few seasons without a loss. When the U-Conn coach was in the middle of a press conference broadcast on ESPN, Obama literally called his cell phone to congratulate him right there on tv.
