Updated – Shooting @ Family Research Council – Open Thread –

Filed under: General — JD @ 2:10 pm

[Guest post by JD]

I am sure this was a racist violent teabagger responding to the violence-inducing rhetoric of the xenophobic hohophobic sexist reichwingnutz.

How has the MFM covered this?

Update

Interesting compilation of other events; a theme emerges.

Legal Insurrection has been all over this all day.

  6. “How has the MFM covered this?”

    Crickets.

    jcw46 (b4329c)

  7. We need to have a national discussion about placing such places as the FRC in public view. It only causes mildly left leaning folks to want to purchase weapons, collect Chick Fil A parphanilia, and want to clock a security guard.

Oh, and if you right wing gun loving wingnuts wouldn’t make it so easy for us to obtain weapons, these kinds of “disagreements” wouldn’t take place..

  8. Just got off one shot and then the guy he shot kicked his butt.

The MFM is covering this by reporting that the shooter is in the hospital but will likely recover from his injuries.

    nk (875f57)

  9. Early reports (caution) identify shooter as Floyd Corkins, 28 years old of Herndon, VA. who may have served in the Air Force. He works as an elementary school teacher at Tuckahoe Elementary School in Arlington, VA.

Corkins upset over FRC support for Chick-fil-A and opposition to gay marriage.

Security guard shot at Family Research Council in downtown D.C.

By Paul Duggan and Mihir Zaveri
A security guard at the Family Research Council was shot and wounded Wednesday morning after a scuffle with a man who expressed disagreement with the group’s conservative views in the lobby of the group’s headquarters in downtown Washington, authorities said….

Family Research Council Guard Wounded in Shooting
    Posted on Aug 15, 2012

Authorities are trying to determine why a gunman walked into the lobby of the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and opened fire, leaving one security guard injured…

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  13. More from Truthdig:
Police say the shooter, who is now in FBI custody, at one point voiced disagreement with the conservative policy organization’s views. It remains unclear whether the Family Research Council was targeted because of its political views, but officials say that will be part of the investigation.

  15. Just another unhinged lefty taking out his hatred with a gun. A story old as time.

Expect zero coverage. Narrative and all, tut-tut

But I do have a serious question: Why does the left always end up doing exactly what they say the right will do but never does?

    Ag80 (b2c81f)

  16. Clearly the suspect walked into the FRC and shot up the place in self defense.

    To end the hate.

So the problem is only here.

  23. Maybe upon rebooting it would look better.

Jamie — Not at all. This is called mocking people like you, but you are obviously too stupid to understand.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  26. Sammy, I think you left an I-tag hanging in #14.

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  27. Obviously isolated workplace violence, just like the Fort Hood shooting.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  28. Obtuse. Stupid. Both as those as well as several other words will work.

    Steve57 (5797fd)

  29. AAck! runaway italics!

The WaPo is presumably covering this as local news, so it probably doesn’t count.

    aphrael (24797a)

  30. Anyway, why all the fuss over Hoho’s, JD (“hohophobic”). Or maybe that will be the shooter’s excuse.

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  31. Meh. That’s an irritating bug. Attempting to end the italics by dropping in a /em tag didn’t work. Maybe a /i tag? Nope, that fails, too.

If an error in one comment can force all the other comments to italics, why can’t an erroneous close tag turn the italics back off?

    aphrael (24797a)

  32. No – even on another computer (on the same network) it still shows numbers increnmenting till comment number 14.

The next one (by narciso) is number 1 and everything in the comment itself is in italics.

The last message is number 17

  35. H8rz!

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  36. @aphrael

Do you also see the numbers starting again after 14?

Yes I think I left an i tag hanging – however when I did it before, that always never continued on to the next message.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  37. italics end

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  38. Number increment fine here (W7Pro sp1 + Firefox), but the italics are unclosable.

BTW, where is our snarky troll? Shouldn’t he be telling us why the FRC deserves to be shot up?

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  39. I’m seeing italics also in the live preview.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  40. Sammy, I see everything in italics, but everything is numbered properly. Chrome running on WinVista.

But walking into a Sikh temple and shooting it up is terrorism.

That, and and standing up for your rights as a secured creditor when King Putt is attempting to screw you out of your investment in Chrysler to gift his union cronies.

    That too is terrorism.

Auto Taskforce: We Don’t Negotiate With Terrorists

    This, not so much.

The WH still hasn’t made a statement. Clearly President “punish our enemies” and Vice President “y’all back in chains” haven’t quite worked out what sort of language they need to use to admonish Sarah Palin for coarsening the discourse.

Police say the shooter, who is now in FBI custody, at one point voiced disagreement with the conservative policy organization’s views. It remains unclear whether the Family Research Council was targeted because of its political views, but officials say that will be part of the investigation.

Yep, the shooter was just really agitated and manic that day so he got a gun and was stumbling along K Street and just happened to go into the first door her saw and, lo and behold, it just happened to be the Family Research Council and he just happened to disagree with their political orientation, but other than that it was all random. I mean, hey, he takes a different direction for his jaunt and it might have been Planned Parenthood or the ACLU, right?

It’s like when some crazed gunman opens fire in a crowd screaming “Allahu akbar!” and we’re told that we can’t assume that it was related to radical Islam or the War on Terror.

  46. The problem does not show up in other threads.

This is something new. I sometimes didn’t close italics or bold before at the end of a message (when I had nothing to add)

It also used to end when you went on to the next message.

Now in the same message if you opened more than you closed, everything after the first italics stayed italics. I could miss thing wnen I mistyped

It seems to have been fixed retroactively. And the numbering system is OK too now.

  108. Mod Democrat Republican,

Dude, like I was telling one of the other trolls the other day, it’s not necessary for you to get all dressed up in your Alger Hiss disguise and attempt to convince us that maybe we should either sit this election out, cast a vote for Gary Johnson, or just give Barry Soetoro another four years to fulfill his Alinsky Utopian Wet Dream—we’re not having any of it.

We’re voting Romney/Ryan, and we hope to have John F’ing Bolton as NSA or Ambassador to the UN.

We also hope to look forward to Edith Jones, J. Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell, Priscilla Owens, or Janice Rogers Brown as potential Supreme Court replacements for Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Steven Breyer.

The late, great Rock Hudson (a very underrated actor and a Republican) may have convinced the still-alive-and-kicking (and multi-talented and also a Republican) Doris Day that he liked girls, but we see right thru your translucent mask.

    Elephant Stone (65d289)

  109. we’re not having any of it.

    We’re voting Romney/Ryan,

    Amen.

The amount of chatter disagreeing with this is far less than I recall it being in prior elections, too.

But one amusing point is that if anyone is on board with Romney, it’s a moderate Republican. The idea that a moderate Republican would not support Romney enthusiastically over Obama is just stupid.

He should have put a little more thought into his concern trolling.

The problem is that you can’t convincingly portray a hard right Republican and also say you aren’t voting against Obama. No one can buy that.

This is because of reality. The tent of people who prefer Romney to Obama is wide and tall.

    Dustin (73fead)

  110. Rock Hudson was a very fine actor, and his death was a tragedy. He had an exceptional talent for interacting with the other actors and actresses in his scenes, not only Doris Day. Dean Martin’s possibly best movie was a western opposite Rock Hudson.

  112. Well, if this thread is gonna go there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzQTzFnDWAw If it’s not safe for your work, sue your boss under at least three counts.

    nk (875f57)

  113. nk, Dustin;

    Yeah, I just IMDB’d it…you’re right, “Showdown” (1973).

Hudson is really underappreciated. He was a versatile actor—he could do dramas, romantic comedies, westerns…I suppose he’ll be most remembered for “Giant,” and the romantic comedies with Doris Day, but he also did a string of fine performances in the ’50’s for a director by the name of Douglas Sirk—“All that Heaven Allows” with Jane Wyman is a standout.
He also did a good turn in a western called “The Undefeated” with John Wayne, in 1969.

Dean Martin (yet another Republican !) also had a lot of versatility, but I think it was perceived that he wasn’t ambitious enough to reach for Oscar-caliber heights. His pal Sinatra tried to push him, but ol’ Deano was a golfer at heart. And all that stumbling around on stage if he were in a drunken stupor was largely an act—he actually liked to get up early and play golf. Although, sadly, when his son’s airplane crashed into one of the San Bernardino mountain ranges in the late ’80s as part of an Air National Guard training exercise, he had the life sucked out of him and probably didn’t ever recover from that shock, and allegedly did begin drinking heavily.

My basement, apparently. I haven’t been down there, but I got an email.

  117. The AP reports:

Corkins had been volunteering for about the past six months at The DC Center for the LGBT Community, said David Mariner, executive director of the community center, which is in Northwest Washington. He usually staffed the center’s front desk on Saturdays, and his most recent shift was about two weeks ago.

“He always struck me as a kind, gentle and unassuming young man. I’m very surprised that he could be involved in something like this,” Mariner said.

Mariner said he did not know Corkins well or have any conversations with him about the Chick-fil-A controversy or other political issues of interest to the gay community.

“I really only talked to him about volunteering, so I couldn’t say anything about anything else,” Mariner said.

I’m not a Democrat and you’all can lie all you like saying I’m a Democrat or working for the President.

You may not be a Democrat, and you may even be a registered Republican. But party labels can be quite meaningless due to your being more liberal than you’re willing to admit.

Even more meaningless in today’s era is the label of “moderate.” That’s because the socio-economic parameters have shifted so far to the left over the past 50-plus years, that what is “moderate” in the context of 2012 is fairly liberal in the context of the 1950s, 60s and even 70s, if not later.

For example, to be a good “centrist” nowadays means one must be very, very squishy about the idea of same-sex marriage, and one must be somewhat worried about the environmental degradation caused by carbon dioxide—ie, the stuff you breathe out every few seconds. And one must also be bothered by nanny-state government intrusiveness but only — ONLY! — if it goes far beyond where it is right now (ie, it’s okay to ban Happy Meals at McDonald’s, but please don’t ban super-sized soda drinks for we adults!!!!).

The guy was of the left, plain and simple. That means out of the 4 major bloody rampages over the past few years, 3 of them involved people who apparently had backgrounds of left-leaning orientation—referring to the guy who shot the Congresswoman in Arizona, the “Batman” guy who reportedly sympathized with the bad guys in movies (although he said his politics were “moderate,” many liberals have a knack for often shedding tears for the bad guy, who’s misidentified by them as the “underdog”), and now the LGBT guy.

Even the bigot who shot up the Sikh temple in Wisconsin may have had odd Nazi-Socia
    list (ie, pro-big government) tendencies.

  124. If having a degree from George Mason is proof of right-wing sympathies, what does the two graduate degrees that I earned from recognized liberal universities mean? Am I a “closet” Liberal? Or just someone who attended a liberal university because of tuition, location and other factors?

Since you’re a professional film critic who has commented on Rock Hudson in a professional context, I would have thought you’d have liked to join in our brief discussion about Hudson’s underappreciated career.
