Romney Easily Wins Nevada

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:43 pm

Looking more and more inevitable every day.

I have an idea — hardly an original one, but one I believe in — that would make a Romney ticket semi-exciting. I discussed it with some like-minded folks last night. I think I’ll save it for Monday, but feel free to speculate in the comments.

  1. Remember being excited about Sarah Palin?

    Me too.

Imagine the same excitement, but far less potential for gaffes in unstructured settings.

    I’ve said way too much…

  2. By the way, a Republican party where NEWT F[certain vowels and consonants omitted]ING GINGRICH is the “anti-Establishment” candidate? That is a party where we are all royally F[I think I will simply omit one vowel here]CKED.

But, you know, that’s where we are.

Whoever eventually wins the Republican nomination, if you have been appalled by the destruction and misery that is directly attributable to Barack Hussein Obama and his fellow Democrats and you aren’t energized by the importance of the times we find ourselves in, make an appointment with your primary care physician and that ask he or she to check you for a pulse.

    Colonel Haiku (a0b242)

So we have a low turnout from Mormons too.

    gary gulrud (d88477)

  56. Stupid Newt Logic:

Asks how Romney can expect to win in the fall when the only way he can win in the primaries is to outspend everyone 5-1 or more, and in the fall Obama likely to outspend Romney, therefore Romney likely to lose in the fall if outspent.

Lets train that intellect back on Newt.

Romney outspends you 5-1 in Florida in the primary, and buries you.

Obama outspends you 10-1 in the fall and …… you win?

  58. Washoe is Tea Party Central — that’s going to be Gingrich and Santorum’s biggest numbers. Its not overly Mormon — its a lot of California refugees who moved into the Washoe Valley to escape the tax burden.

Clark County, if it has not yet reported, is likely to drive Romney’s margin up even higher.

Give him an office in the Old Exec. Office Bldg with a window, but no staff. Tell him his office hours are 8:00 to 5:00, M-F, and he doesn’t have to work overtime or weekends. On Fox’s site, they have it right now at 42% to 26% for Romney.

But Clark County is going 60-20 for Romney in the very early returns — only 500 votes reported. Washoe County, where Gingrich will run strong, has reported 5000 votes already. The rest of the state is a pittance compared to those two counties.

Romney likely to get a majority.

  88. “Newt Gingrich’s post–Nevada caucus speech included about three minutes of inspired moments about issues and ideas in his usual imaginative and intellectually robust style. So why does he not just stay with that — given that he often seems more dynamic and glib than Romney in his attacks on Obama, and not long ago gained ground despite the attacks against him? Instead, he now turns ad nauseam to the tired reasons why he loses — yes, including lots of Mormons in Nevada — and ends up as Richard Nixon not going to get kicked around any more.

But whether he knows it or not, Gingrich is becoming a caricature of petulance: no concession in Nevada, no call to Romney, no awareness that his inability to raise money at levels of a political rival or to match a competing campaign organization is not necessarily unfair. That’s politics, and Gingrich knows it. I don’t understand why he thinks now losing to Romney in 2012 is solely due to Romney’s innate deviousness in a way McCain beating Romney in 2008 was not — given that Romney was about the same in both 2008 and 2012. Gingrich seems oblivious to the fact that McCain’s style and history gave him advantages over Romney’s money and hardball in ways Gingrich’s own proven liabilities apparently do not…”

  90. “There were rumors flying around the blogosphere on Saturday night as the Nevada caucus returns were being tabulated that Newt Gingrich would use his press conference to adopt a new more positive strategy going forward. But after watching Gingrich’s bizarre 11 pm presser, it would appear that the new positive Newt bears a strange resemblance to the old nasty Newt. Gingrich spent most of his session with the press venting his bitterness at Mitt Romney. While vowing to continue his presidential campaign, the main focus of his remarks was not his differences with President Obama but the anger he feels toward the GOP frontrunner.

As he did after losing in Florida, Gingrich again failed to congratulate Romney for winning in Nevada. But, if anything, his rage over being beaten in the pre-Florida primary debates has only grown. Calling Romney a liar, Gingrich piled on the abuse trying to link him to leftist financier George Soros. Listening to Gingrich, it was clear that his campaign was being driven as much by his animus for Romney as it was by his own burning ambition for the presidency. But the question for Gingrich’s main financial backers today has to be whether they are interested in continuing to subsidize an effort that seems more focused on damaging the likely Republican standard bearer than on beating the incumbent…”

Sadly, the press in this country destroys any Republican candidate that isn’t a centrist, while leaving the wackiest leftards alone, or even lauding them on their occasional moments of sanity. They let Obama run as a centrist in 2008, for example, while castigating McCain as a dangerous right-wing extremist.

Anyone on the Republican right knows that to enter presidential politics is suicide. Newt’s done it twice and no stone is left unturned. Compare that with Edwards or Clinton or, it appears, JFK.

  113. Perhaps it was by Staish, but I thought he had worn out his welcome on many fronts.
Even so, it won’t take him long (if history is any precedent) to retake that hill.

In two months, 90% of the people posting here will be the most vehement Romney fans the world has ever seen.

If Romney is the nominee, I certainly hope that 90% of conservatives will support him against Obama … just as Hillary supporters joined Obama in 2008. However, I doubt the not-Romneys here will end up as infatuated with him as Hillary supporter Debbie Wasserman Schultz is with Barack Obama.

  122. timb,

The media isn’t even polling this now but last year US News & World Report noted that liberals were also disenchanted with their nominee:

With a new poll showing that 32 percent of Democrats are eager for President Obama to be challenged by somebody in his own party, is it time for a Democrat to get into the 2012 primary?

In other words, disenchantment with their nominee is a problem for Democrats as well as Republicans.

I suspect that’s why Obama is focusing on decisions that please his base, e.g., the Catholic contraception decision, “African-Americans for Obama,” and pulling out of Iraq. He knows he will have to move to the middle in the general election and he may be concerned his base will become even more disenchanted.
