SOTU 2012

As Brendan Nyhan put it last year: “It’s the most overcovered event in politics relative to the amount of the news that’s made.”  It will have no lasting effect on the Obama presidency.  However, as it’s an election year, Obama will use this State of the Union address to preview his election themes:

Building off of the themes of the Kansas speech, the State of the Union will lay out a “Blueprint for an America built to last.” The Blueprint will be supported by four pillars: 1) American Manufacturing; 2) American Energy; 3) Skills for American Workers and 4) American Values.

As you may recall, the Kansas speech was about the joys of crony capitalism and regulatory capture.

So what about American Manufacturing?

It is certainly true that employment in manufacturing has fallen in recent decades. The council’s report observes that in 1980, manufacturing accounted for about 20 percent of American jobs, whereas the comparable figure today is about 9 percent. At the same time, manufacturing’s share of total production has remained roughly stable and, in fact, the United States and China are the only countries to have gained significant world share in manufacturing in recent years. The line that connects and explains these two dots of strong manufacturing and manufacturing job loss is the rapid increase in labor productivity, the result of innovation, and global competitive pressures.

Heritage’s J.D. Foster seemed to be at a loss to explain the administration’s emphasis here, but this will be Obama’s pander to Big Labor and swing states in the Rust Belt.

As for American Energy, Obama will (again) propose “an economy fueled by homegrown and alternative energy sources that will be designed and produced by American workers.”  Of course, it must be “homegrown” and “alternative” lest someone point out the  jobs Obama is killing in the energy sector.  Instead, we should continue to pour tax money down the rathole of renewable energy in an orgy of crony capitalism, to prevent people from noticing the Luddites backing the Democrats.  If the American Manufacturing plank is meant to placate Big Labor and the Rust Belt, the American Energy plank is intended to placate Greens, upper tier New Class crony capitalists and mushy upscale voters in the Mountain West.  Give Obama this much: It takes cojones to pull this after praising scandal-ridden Solydra during the 2010 SOTU.

When it comes to Skills for American Workers, the White House promises “new ideas for how we’ll make sure our students and workers get the education and training they need so that we have a workforce ready to take on the jobs of today and tomorrow.”  Anyone believe that?  The Occupy movement is largely a function of the fact that jobs are drying up for the social workers, virtuecrats, and the regulatory class.  The higher education bubble is the product of decades of progressive education policy.  If anyone out there thinks a president beholden to teachers’ unions and tenured leftists is going to propose a radical overhaul of our dysfunctional education system, Obama may have some infrastructure to sell you.  Among the president’s living props tonight will be Sara Ferguson, who teaches in the Chester Upland School District — which stands accused by the Pennsylvania Department of Education of financial mismanagement.

If you had any doubt that Obama’s rhetoric on American Values will be a heaping helping of class warfare, fear not: the First Lady has invited Warren Buffett’s secretary to serve as another human prop.  BTW, I see Twitter chatter asking why it’s okay to call her a “secretary,” when the obvious answer is bacause it’s a liberal doing it.  Expect a lot of gab about “shared responsibility,” when Obama is not blaming others for the failures of Big Government.

Also among the presidential guests tonight: Steve Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.  Maybe Obama will recall the time that the Apple co-founder complained to him about over-regulation driving factories overseas and teachers’ unions crippling our schools.  The story would tie in to at least two of Obama’s themes tonight.

  5. Obama tried to hide his agenda in 2008 but it’s much harder to hide now, and even the media will have a hard time selling it — especially in the Midwest, the South, and Southwest. What an election this will be.

  14. Maybee, I don’t know if there is a particular place in the afterlife where past US presidents congregate and chat. But if there is, I can’t imagine any of them are too thrilled when Obama tries to compare himself to them. (And I am including the Democrats.)

  22. I cannot wait for him to lie about how Mitt pays a lower tax rate than Warren Buffet’s secretary, since it is a dishonest comparison of income tax to capital gains tax rates, and ironically even his own capital gains tax cuts would not alleviate said douchey imbalance. And even funnier is his millionaire and billionaire I hate you tax proposal is a tax on income, not cap gains, so it would not rectify. He counts on the MFM to continue to provide cover for hi,.

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  146. feets:

The status of ‘loyal opposition’ imposes on those out of power some serious responsibilities: to show respect for the Presidency and its occupant, to express agreement where it exists. Republicans tonight salute our President, for instance, for his aggressive pursuit of the murderers of 9/11, and for bravely backing long overdue changes in public education. I personally would add to that list admiration for the strong family commitment that he and the First Lady have displayed to a nation sorely needing such examples.

Another illustration of the beauty and nobleness of limousine liberalism…

Foxnews.com: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave $10,772 of the $1.2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1 percent, according to tax returns for those years released today by his campaign.

    Romney charitable contributions
    2010: (13.73%) $2.98 million of $21.7 million
    2011: (est) (19.14%) $4 million of $20.9 million

Reason.com: [Arthur C.] Brooks shows that those who say they strongly oppose redistribution by government to remedy income inequality give over 10 times more to charity than those who strongly support government intervention, with a difference of $1,627 annually versus $140 to all causes.

A 2002 poll found that those who thought government “was spending too much money on welfare” were significantly more likely than those who wanted increased spending on welfare to give directions to someone on the street, return extra change to a cashier, or give food and/or money to a homeless person.

Brooks finds that households with a conservative at the helm gave an average of 30 percent more money to charity in 2000 than liberal households (a difference of $1,600 to $1,227). The difference isn’t explained by income differential—in fact, liberal households make about 6 percent more per year. Poor, rich, and middle class conservatives all gave more than their liberal counterparts.

The beauty and nobleness of limousine liberalism (Part 2):

Poor, rich, and middle class conservatives all gave more than their liberal counterparts.

dailymail.co.uk: The Bidens gave an average of $369 to charity a year for the decade before he moved to the Naval Observatory – about 0.3 percent of their income. Back in 1997, then veep Al Gore and his then wife Tipper gave $353.

Since becoming veep, Biden hasn’t become much more generous. In 2010, he gave $5,350, about 1.4 percent of income. That same year, Romney gave some $3 million. The national average is about three percent.

That observation is bolstered very effectively by DRJ’s video showing how a lot of Obama’s remarks are just for show.

My respect for Mitch remains high, but then, I see that he doesn’t have the pizzazz I never cared about, but this primary seems to demand.

Would just record and agenda (Which I consider superior to Perry’s) have overcome the inevitable attacks on his family and the inevitable ‘he’s not conservative because of the truce’ attack? I can hear Bachmann delivering it to thunderous applause.

Even if Mitch only had a slim chance of prevailing, he should have gone for it. The problems justify the attempt.

VP? Sure… why not? But I suspect we’ll see someone a little more camera friendly, with no baggage to speak of, instead of a choice rooted in performance. Color me jaded.

    Dustin (7362cd)

  204. Yes, Narciso, who doesn’t have baggage?

If a tree falls in the woods and there’s no one to hear it, does it make a sound?

The people with no baggage are those for whom their baggage is underreported. Sure, WE know about it, but the swing voters don’t.

That’s why conservative candidates seem to get rejected for minor things as voters move to other folks who were worse. They were considering what they were told to consider.

I tell ya, we’re just thirty years and a school voucher program away from all this being less of a problem. No biggie.

    Dustin (7362cd)

  205. Mr. Dustin it says that yes Virginia there is an establishment and Mitch is sitting cozy in its lap.

And that makes you wonder why it’s so important to Mitch and Co. that the cowardly and unprincipled Mitt be The Won 2.0

why not the cowardly and unprincipled Newt?

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  206. #88 what you’ve said about Obama’s lying skills paraphrases David Geffen from, I believe, the summer of 2007 where he said the Clintons were effortless liars. I think it was that quote that signaled to Hollywood it was okay to jump from the Clintons and led to his Presidency.

And if that’s true, Geffen is ‘all in’ with Obama having burned the bridge to the Clintons. There’s nowhere to go.

    East Bay Jay (19f566)

  207. You’re 100% right, Happyfeet. When I say I’m not concerned, that’s a poor way to explain myself.

That is cause for concern, but I’m basically used to it and I see the next few months as full of similar little jabs, and from unexpected directions.

The harder it is for Mitt to be nominated, the uglier it’s going to get.

One fella is already calling me “prawn of arab loins” (which is untrue, NTTAWTT), so I imagine his creativity will be challenged to fully capture the evil that is Dustin in a cogent haiku when Mitt finally loses.

Then we can all get rid of Obama together.

    Dustin (7362cd)

  208. Newt cannot “be The Won” because he cannot beat Teh Won.

    Icy (5ec1bb)

  209. that he took a shot at Newt is depressing to no end

Perhaps he was talking about Obama’s family versus the single-parent families one finds among the underclass. Racist.

    Kevin M (563f77)

  210. Not that I actually think that’s what it was, but I’ll bet you that is how some Dems are taking it.

    Kevin M (563f77)

  211. Teh Won has an approval rating index of -16%, which is very bad.

Newt has the ability to perform under pressure as a politician. He’s changed the inevitability tide. Last week 70% of the GOP polled said Romney would be the nominee. Today, 51%. And Newt has gained 19% of poll support in this month alone (to the top of the field).

I think it will be very hard for either Mitt or Newt to beat Obama. Obama is beating them both (Mitt’s doing better, though). I think this ugly primary needs to end, and then the GOP contender will start pandering to the middle, and while I’ll be pissed about that, he’s going to gain ground.

Amusingly, in 2008 during this time, Barack Obama was getting sneered at by democrats as unelectable. He was far behind John Mccain in the polls (11% behind). That’s more than Newt will have to gain on the SCOAMF.

It’s not only doable, it’s what happened last time.

I think the primary is distorting things very wildly. PPP claims Obama is beating Newt in Texas, which is absurd. But we’re pretty divided and pissed off right now, with a lot of attacks at both front runners directed at Republicans not supporting them.

    Dustin (7362cd)

  212. A common sense post:

Republicans have spent the past several months in a fratricidal bloodbath. Fortunately, the memory of the American electorate for such antics is short. Once we choose a candidate (and I am happy with Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich) and unite behind him, we will win, unless, of course, we find a way to sabotage ourselves.

He’s not saying what I’m saying, though. His premise is that the economy is going to keep sucking real real bad.

So go ahead and vote for whoever your favorite candidate is. This ‘he’s not electable, but of course he is’ canard has proven wrong repeatedly anyway.

    Comment by MayBee

    New Math. You need reeducation.

What I find amusing about this tax return mess is that Mitt clearly did not want to release them, even though they reveal so much charity. The charity was sincere, not a political stunt. A stark contrast between him and Obama. If only his record was closer to me ideologically…

    Dustin (7362cd)

  230. I don’t like Gingrich’s attacks on Romney’s wealth or how he made his money. As long as it’s legal, I support almost any way of making money. (I can’t think of any legal form of employment I oppose but there’s probably something, so I’m adding the “almost any” qualification.) Part of capitalism is letting the market decide what works and what doesn’t work, and part of letting the market work is leaving legal businesses alone.

Having said that, I’m not a libertarian so I also believe there is a role for government in our lives — although not the big government liberals love. That’s why I also object to attacks on Newt’s willingness to speculate about ideas and solutions. Some will fail and some will work, and most will fall somewhere in between, but I most fear politicians who think there is only one solution to every problem.

If anybody took his rhetoric seriously, it would be an argument for fascism. But they don’t.
