Patterico (f724ca) — 12/15/2011 @ 6:37 pmPaul Ryan never had a serious plan, Patterico. He just hung a weight around every Republican neck, and allowed the Dems to claim we would destroy MediCare.

koam @wittier (b9af30) — 12/15/2011 @ 6:48 pmThat’s three extraordinaries in one answer.

happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:12 pmBachmann looks very presentable tonight as well.
HD TV is cruel to women: Bachmann is compelled to trowel on an abnormal amount of foundation on to cover the lines and crows feet, lest she be judged as looking like a hag. How many of the men up there felt so concerned?
Points for the updo, though.
Dana (4eca6e) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:15 pmRon Paul is a silly monkey
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:15 pmWhy were we flying a drone over Iran?! How are we going to find out what they’re doing without one? Does Paul really think it would be responsible not to know what the Iranians are up to?! To deliberately close our eyes and not find out?
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:16 pmNewt is so much more real and so much less contrived than Romney
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:17 pmthis debate looks way way too game showy

Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:43 pmNewt Gingrich agrees with Obama on ethanol.

Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:53 pmSo Perry thinks it’s bad for the federal government to pick winners and losers, but it’s hunkey dorey for a state government to do so? That the reason the feds shouldn’t favour some market players over others is the tenth amendment?!
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:54 pmPerry doesn’t think per se
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:55 pmJust an interjection:
AD-RtR/OS! (e08334) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:56 pmDid anyone read Ben Stein’s column in the American Spectator on 12.14.11?
His prediction after watching the Gingrich-Huntsman interaction from Monday:
“…the next President of the United States, Newt Gingrich, and the next Vice President, Jon Huntsman…”
Now we know how this guy swings:
hasn’t had no Blingrich flings,
kisses no DonTrump rings,
ignores TWO focksnooze dings.
The R bar is set low though. 🙂
tifosa (72b7a4) — 12/15/2011 @ 7:57 pm🙄 Jervis Tetch Huntsman what exactly does he bring to the table?

Bachmann looked great
Huntsman and Santorum were annoyingly irrelevant
Romney is too frantic he comes across like he’s gonna pepper spray the other shoppers
Perry looked like he was braced for every question he reminded me of kickball
Gingrich was very affable but that was gay what he said about outlawing abortion
Ron Paul has a dreadful gravitas deficit

What else is new?
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:20 pmhey doh, I’m with ya….the only thing missing from the stage was $arah.
tifosa (72b7a4) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:22 pmYou are kind of an imbecile, tiffy. Your boy Huntsman is polling just awesome. Did you know we share China’s values? Run along and write him another check.
JD (4b216c) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:25 pmTiffy is an obama boy.

Big winners: zany, fascism, Tebow
DCSCA (9d1bb3) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:29 pmBig losers: Buckley, Iowans, 30 Rock syndication blocs
Honorable Mention- Reagan, Cuban missile crisis, ‘lavatories of innovation’ (aka Texas two-holers)
Tebow is a fascist?
Please lay off the wacky tobaccy.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:30 pmIMP is off his meds. Again. Pity.
JD (4b216c) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:30 pmI watched the debate and I’d willingly vote for anyone but Ron Paul. (I like Dr. Paul on several issues but I just can’t handle his foreign policy views.) Of course, it’s fun to spar here with Romney supporters because Romney is such an easy candidate to gig — he’ll look like a pretzel if he makes it to the general election — but even Romney might be able to win in today’s environment.
DRJ (a83b8b) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:31 pmMichele always impresses me in these debate things with how likable she is… I think she’s gonna come out of this just fine
Huntsman is the exact opposite … he’s an insufferable twat
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:34 pm_____________________________________________
Gingrich was very affable but that was gay what he said about outlawing abortion
Since it was “gay,” happyfeet, I guess his comment wasn’t such a bad thing, was it?
Does everything done against chinese people count as racist
Only if the situation involves Chinese folks who are liberal or registered Democrats. Or Islamic. Or gay/bisexual. OTOH, if they’re of the right, you’re allowed to do Charlie Chan impersonations and replace the “R” sound with the “L” sound—even though it’s the Japanese language that has that phonetic quirk.
Mark (411533) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:36 pmDohbiden: Don’t forget that Hawaii is in Asia.
Huntsman lit into Obama a bit, at least for him. I think Romney and Perry did the best job explaining what’s wrong with Obama’s economic policies – picking winners and losers. When the viewer asked what will be the top industries of the next 10 years I though Romney gave an excellent answer: The market decides that. Then he went into Obama’s practice of investing taxpayer money in car battery makers, Solyndra etc. But they could also have brought up crony capitalism. They’ll need to bring that stuff up in the general if they’re serious about winning.
Perry was good on Fast and Furious, saying if Holder really didn’t know about it he should be fired. But he should also have explained for the viewers what it is, even though most probably already knew, as practice for the general election, although there’ll likely be no questions on it in the general.
Gerald A (9d78e8) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:40 pmwe love this exaltation!
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:41 pm______________________________________________
I watched the debate and I’d willingly vote for anyone but Ron Paul.
Maybe one reason I can’t get all wound up over the pluses or minuses of all the Republican candidates (the way Dustin and Colonel in particular have been doing) is because I’m so sickened by what’s currently in the White House and the thought of what 4 more years of that will be like. From that standpoint, I’d even take a chance with Paul.
Mark (411533) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:41 pmSince DCSCA is here, everyone should know that Obama is Mr. Spock, i.e. a real cerebral type.
Gerald A (9d78e8) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:42 pmDangit. Missed the thread when the debate was on.
But I gotta add: Love it when RPaul goes off the rails. That thar was hilarious. He looks like an old biddy trying to wave invisible elves off her lawn.
Also… Tim Tebow. Heh.
Book (1ecc3f) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:47 pmMgabe is a tyrant who doesn’t care about his people.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:50 pmMark, I’d vote Romney over Obama, of course.
But Obama alone is not all I aspire to fix. Replacing Obama, alone, is a worthy cause, but the country is in serious trouble on spending and Romney won’t fix it, so I am passionately invested in finding someone who at least might fix it.
I think that argument can wait until the general. Electability polls are not very reliable until far later in the game. Too late to matter unless the distance is vast (And it isn’t). The left seems to want to run against Romney like they wanted Mccain, who was the electable candidate.
Right now, I think the difference between the top three candidates is substantial, and because the presidency is so significant, it makes a lot of sense to analyze those differences and select who would be the most effective president.
I think Newt could be a great champion for solving various problems. Perry would lack on the bully pulpit. Gingrich could lapse ideologically. Perry is consistent 95% of the time and he’s strong. He walks the walk because he believes in it.
Romney… I have very little faith in Romney. I read people well pretty much 100% of the time. Romney would go to the left as soon as he was nominated in ways that would prove very destructive. Less destructive than Obama, but more destructive to the GOP.
The legacy of Romney in MA was an end to many terms of GOP governors and an open door on many new liberal policies. The legacy of domestic spending failures and TARP 1.0 was Barack Obama.
It’s necessary for the GOP to present a conservative option, or we cede too much ground.
Dustin (cb3719) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:52 pmChris Matthews-I did not have sexual relations with the first black president Obama.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 8:53 pmAgree.
Patterico (f724ca) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:08 pmYea.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:15 pmI thought it was both.
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:18 pmOff topic, but Christopher Hitchens has died.
Ag80 (ec45d6) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:24 pmthat’s a real loss
happyfeet (3c92a1) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:25 pmI’d vote for Paul over 0bama. When 0bama was briefed on the cold realities of war and how dangerous it would be to carry out his promises, he saw reason and backed down on the most destructive of them. I see no reason to suppose Paul, who isn’t handicapped by a hatred for America, would do significantly worse. It wouldn’t be a great time for national security, but then this isn’t either. I’d rather vote for someone who actually believes in defending America, and especially for someone who would make John Bolton SecState, but if it’s Paul v 0bama I don’t think it’s even a question. On defense and foreign affairs they’re about equally dismal, while on almost everything else Paul is right.
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:25 pmI know all you left coasters think pig farmers are dumb as posts but I bet Paul comes in third unless his goons turn the road signs.
gary gulrud (d88477) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:32 pmAg80,
Just opened a thread. Thanks.
Patterico (f724ca) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:34 pmPaul is insane.
Patterico (f724ca) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:35 pm72. Someone has ‘irritation’ on the mind. Hemorrhoids, or lesions, or chancres my guess.
gary gulrud (d88477) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:36 pmPatterico…………..Paul is insane but sometimes he has lucid moments.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:39 pmThat said Does anyone find Romney annoying?
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:41 pmHe’s only insane on foreign affairs and the fed, more or less.
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:42 pmNo the fed should be ended.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:43 pmnot the government but thed federal reserve.
Dohbiden (ef98f0) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:43 pmMilhouse, it’s hard to see how Ron Paul doesn’t already know most of that stuff. He’s been a politician since Obama was 12-13 years old.
The guy is saying Israel is keeping people in concentration camps.
It’s very unfortunate, as Ron Paul is effective on discussing some core realities and principles, and then just goes too far or on a wild tangent, and you realize he’s probably not all there upstairs. I think the guy is 100% sincere, and most of his supporters believe in something, rather than just opposing something, and he isn’t going to change his mind about any of it.
That’s probably how the Republic will end. Not Paul specifically, but at some point, the issues we keep kicking down the road will reach a breaking point, and the person who righteously promises to solve them will also apply principles that cause geopolitical disaster. That could happen in a century or two, or it could happen in 2012 if we nominated Ron Paul.
My point is that as we continue to take a pass on moderate conservative reforms, we up the stakes and up the stakes. The later we reform things, the worse it will be.
Right now, getting medicare cut down to size would lead to riots. Getting social security merely fair to our kids would be the political equivalent of joining the Satanic party. Already, we are very close to making it impossible to recover.
And yet, some of these candidates would make the 2012 election the least important election of my lifetime because their direction would be so similar to Obama’s. Better, sure, but not well distinguished beyond competence and ethics (Which I admit are significant).
Dustin (cb3719) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:44 pmThe fed may not be doing a great job, but it or something like it is probably necessary. And it isn’t some evil bilderburger conspiracy.
Milhouse (ea66e3) — 12/15/2011 @ 9:44 pmObama thinks pollution is evil but the sad thing is he thinks bankrupting the cola industry prevents pollution even though it doesn’t.
Acid Rain is a liberal myth used to scare people into supporting crushing regulation.
