Eric Holder on the Hot Seat

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:02 am

Testifying about Fast and Furious now. Watch here.

UPDATE: Holder guzzles some cheap whine:

“You guys need to — you guys need to stop this,” Holder told a reporter for the conservative Daily Caller website, which has been gathering calls for the attorney general’s resignation from lawmakers, presidential candidates and even governors. “This is not an organic thing that’s just happening. … You guys are behind this,” the attorney general complained, pointing his finger at reporter Neil Munro.

Mmm, that’s good responsibility takin’!

I have it on good authority that Tucker Carlson personally hands out firearms to the Zetas. He is such a beloved figure amongst Mexican cartels that any bow-tied man entering Mexico is immediately swarmed by groups of locals yelling: “Guns! Guns!”

  1. It is on the TV in the background, I’m going to leave the room. I don’t know if my head or stomach will explode first. I have listened to Obama lie enough, I can’t take another one. Mercy and grace on those who need to do this.

They’re also going after Kagan’s involvement with health care legislation.

I will eat my words and apologize if it can later be shown that my lack of confidence is unwarranted.

  7. I had thought based both on history and common sense that Holder would resign or be thrown under the bus by Obama before this day of testimony ever came. Guess not. I fear that means there is so much more criminality in the Justice Dept. being hidden that they are unwilling and afraid to have even a new Dem AG come in and see it. Regardless–this will ultimately not end well for Holder. Do you think he knows that yet? There is no way he keeps his cabinet post in an election year with the senate up for grabs.

  32. Why yes, Mr. Holder. You are a victim. You closed your eyes to illegal gun sales to Mexican smugglers of death dealing drugs into the United States. Guns that were used to kill 300 people including two Border Patrol officers. Why? Why? Why? For the noble purpose to restrict the right of American citizens to own firearms. F*** Heller and McDonald. 40. Off topic, but there has been another shooting at Va Tech. 2 dead, and the gunman is still at large. or so the reports are saying right now. You know by now not to trust breaking news accounts like this. When Gabby giffords was shot, first that judge was dead, then he was alive, then he was dead.

The shooter fled on foot toward a parking lot called “the Cage.” At that lot, a second person was found dead, Owczarski said.

  42. Impeach him. I’m serious. The House has a duty to impeach Holder.

    Milhouse (d7842d)

  43. We now know that the ATF and this administration was brazenly lying about the contribution of guns smuggled across the border from US dealers to Mexican crime. Brazenly lying. The bulk of illegal firearms in Mexico do not come from US dealers sales in the US to straw buyers.

They come from US government sponsored sales to the Mexican government being then diverted to the drug cartels in Mexico.

We now have confirmed was was intuitively obvious, that the Fast and Furious operation had no legitimate law enforcement purpose. That its goal was to put traceable firearms into drug cartel hands that could then be the showpiece “proof” of the need for more gun control laws in the US. The result was that the US government supplied firearms to the Mexican cartel in violation of US law and resulted in hundreds of deaths that we know of.

    These are impeachable offenses.

It’s more important, historically, that we make an example out of him. At least that’s my opinion. He needs to be impeached now, rather than milked. I mean, both would be ideal, actually.

But if he’s not impeached, that sets the stage for the next crook.

    Impeach Holder.

    Dana (4eca6e)

  51. Because I can’t believe he actually said this:

Rep. James Sensenbrenner asked Holder: “Tell me what’s the difference between lying and misleading Congress, in this context?”

Holder’s response is a bit Clintonian. “Well, if you want to have this legal conversation, it all has to do with your state of mind and whether or not you had the requisite intent to come up with something that would be considered perjury or a lie,” Holder said.

    Dana (4eca6e)

    Colonel Haiku (687f10)

  56. Re #50

As Icy said above, Holder does better than 100% lying. He manages to obfuriate multiple times for each question.

He must be really talented, though. I don’t think I could begin to do that vacuous-speak for more than 5 seconds without getting confused or laughing out loud or both.

Every time I read that quote, Dana, I dislike Holder more and more. It’s like the blurb I saw this morning, he refuses to admit they’ve been stalling in handing over records, and when asked if he is withholding out of a legal principle or not (executive privilege) he doesn’t answer.

I am reminded of those who told Alexander that if he could untie the Gordian Knot they would surrender. He cut it in half to “cut the nonsense”. I hope something as dramatic can happen to Holder.

Did Atkinson finally surface again with another story on this?

Toensig…I watched her testimony before Waxman. Sometimes it is hard not to give in to the idea that there isn’t somebody behind the scenes pulling the strings because so much doesn’t make sense.

  63. Sheryl Atkinson has a good update on the proceedings, written December 8th. This is rather interesting…was gun walking used to tighten regulations…no reply.

Documents obtained by CBS News show that officials discussed using dealers’ sales, including those encouraged by the ATF to justify a new gun regulation called “Demand Letter 3.” That would require some U.S. gun shops to report the sale of multiple rifles or “long guns.” Demand Letter 3 was so named because it would be the third ATF program demanding gun dealers report tracing information.

“There’s plenty of evidence showing that this administration planned to use the tragedies of Fast and Furious as rationale to further their goals of a long gun reporting requirement. But, we’ve learned from our investigation that reporting multiple long gun sales would do nothing to stop the flow of firearms to known straw purchasers because many Federal Firearms Dealers are already voluntarily reporting suspicious transactions. It’s pretty clear that the problem isn’t lack of burdensome reporting requirements,” Grassley said.

Grassley and Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., wrote Holder a letter in July asking if officials in his agency discussed how “Fast and Furious could be used to justify additional regulatory authorities.” So far, they have not received a response.

Justice Department officials also wouldn’t comment to CBS News on whether gun-walking was used to support tighter regulations.

Not criminality, politics where politics is not supposed to be. It is possible some of that may actually be illegal.

We saw politics just now in the Department of Health and Human Services (the morning after pill)

We saw politics in the Keystone Pipeline decision (where at different times the Administration seems to have tilted things both ways – Rush Limbaugh said yesterday maybe he is after campaign contributions from people on both sides of that issue)

We see politics, unusual politics, at the National Labor Relations Board.

We see political games being played with proposed legislation.

Holder is politically loyal so Obama (or his political experts) would want to keep him there. There might be some decision he would want him to make or not make.

Holder let Clinton do what he wanted about the pardons and tried ti make the process look normal.

Regardless–this will ultimately not end well for Holder. Do you think he knows that yet? There is no way he keeps his cabinet post in an election year with the senate up for grabs.

Unless there’s near criminality, he stays there till the election.
