Sockpuppet Friday—the Grade Inflation Edition!

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

As usual, you are positively encouraged to engage in sockpuppetry on this thread. The usual rules apply.

Please be sure to switch back to your regular handle when commenting on other threads. I have made that mistake myself.

And remember, the worst sin you can commit on this thread is not being funny.

———————

And for this week’s Friday frivolity, I was reading this post at the the PJ Tatler when a passage caught my eye.  The author was telling about famed lawyer Christian Adams’ visit to Tulane Law School in Louisiana, and the subject turned to the practice in many states of stripping felon of their right to vote:

During the question-and-answer period , Christian was confronted by a student who was upset that there had been no meaningful discussion of what he claimed was the biggest group of disenfranchised voters – felons.

It turns out that the upset student, Bruce Reilly, a first-year at Tulane, had a very personal reason for asking the question: he had pled guilty to second-degree murder and robbery and served 12 years in prison. When he was 20 years old, Reilly beat and stabbed to death a 58-year old English professor at Community College of Rhode island, capping off his crime by stealing the professor’s car, wallet, and credit cards. In short, he is a felon (the term ex-felon should be reserved for those with a full pardon, not those who have merely served the prison portion of their sentences).

Which made me immediately stop and go, “huh?”  Now the article goes on to point out how absurd it was that Mr. Reilly was getting an NAACP scholarship given that his felony conviction will undoubtedly prevent him becoming a lawyer.  In case you didn’t know, every lawyer has to pass a character and fitness review, and felonies almost automatically result in disqualification.  And that is an interesting point and all, but I am getting hung up on something else.

More fundamentally than that, shouldn’t he be disqualified from being a student, at any school?  I don’t mean merely because he committed a felony, but particularly because he killed a professor? Shouldn’t that be an automatic disqualifier?  You kill one of us, we don’t let you come to our school…

I mean if you were his teacher, knowing that, would you be willing to give him an F?  And do you think the average professorial type is going to be that courageous?

  1. i don’t know why those fascist cops kicked us out of Zucotti park. I mean we were good for the place, leaving our natural fertilizer all over the grounds.

  2. Snarkily and slightly off-topic…

Good thing it wasn’t a drug conviction, then he wouldn’t be eligible for a scholarship…

Back on topic…does a felony conviction completely block him from joining the bar? It’s possible that some states will allow him to practice if he jumps through the right hoops and he has kept his nose clean since the crime happened. The law school thought he could clear the hurdles, or else they would have denied his application.

  3. There is a bit more to the story than the linked post discloses.

A source told the Boston Globe in 1993 that Reilly “flipped out” after being invited into the 58-year-old professor’s home to smoke pot and engage in oral sex.

I can see you’re not getting it. That’s OK. You didn’t go to Harvard Law (you know I’m going to be a good president because Harvard Law produces only the finest big government technocrats).

OK, here. I’ll demonstrate with my illegal immigrant panther. The Panther will play the role of Social Security and Federal Romneycare. You get to be the skunk, and I’ll be the high skill technocrat managing you with my stick of government.

Imagine flying all these employees around the country for free while you can’t pay your creditors. I say that when an airline goes into receivership the trustee should claw back all those gifts; make those freeloaders pay for the trips they took on the airline’s dime.

  39. Go to my campaign website to read about my awesome accomplishments!

“Perry also signed a historic property tax cut, and a tax cut for small businesses with less than $1 million in gross receipts.”

I used to say on the homepage in banner type that I created the largest property tax cut in Texas history, but people pointed out to me that was fudging just a little bit since the cut came from courts ruling how we did property taxes illegal. I don’t mention that part, but people can do their own research if they want.

I also don’t mention the huge new tax I imposed on businesses since I had to cut the illegal property taxes. So far not many people have noticed or even mentioned that the cuts in small business taxes I describe above are from screwing up the tax increases on all businesses I had to fix.

I’m also glad my flip flopping over the Gardasil mandate has died down. At least people haven’t focused on my flip flops on TARP or the Trans Texas Corridor much yet, so I have that to be thankful for. Stuff like that would hurt my credibility to advocate for smaller government.

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  40. So what if I had trouble opening the door. There’s no video, so it didn’t happen. Besides, Bush did it first. nanny nanny boo boo

    B. Hussein Obama (c65c00)

  41. I’m also glad my flip flopping over the Gardasil mandate has died down.

Yeah, it’s great that the anger over your flip flop over something you never flip flopped on has died down! As Romney said, you were doing the right thing with Gardasil. You just didn’t do it with the right polish. The Romney Difference.

Did you hear about that time President Lincoln rode a train to deliver the Gettysburg Address?

    He DIDN’T PAY FOR THAT!

    HOLY @#$@ what a monster!

    Shreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeikk

Plus, the Mormon God hadn’t lifted the curse on black people until, what, 1980 or so, so why did Lincoln help black people, whom all Mormons know are an “inferior species”. Even today, we all know that black people are black because God cursed them. I can’t wait for this to come up in the debates. I’m sure Romney will be able to explain why he was telling French children to embrace the view that blacks were an inferior species.

Unfortunately, the Mormon church will not repudiate the concept that blacks were cursed and marked inferior.

They think just saying the curse is lifted, in essence blacks are now forgiven for being degenerates, is acceptable.

Oh wait, what’s that? You can’t criticize Romney’s religious views until after he’s nominated? OK. I’m sure this won’t come up in the debates or anything. It’s not like Romney vowed that he supported the truth in these racist views in order to join the priesthood and carry these views to other countries. It’s not like Romney would insincerely flip flop on a matter of core values or anything.

Nope, this probably won’t come up.

  44. Quiz:

Which of these cats did I agree was cursed by God until around 1980?

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  45. I have no control over the religious bigots who support my campaign for president, but boy howdy, didn’t that Pastor knock it out of the park?

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  46. But Rick, extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Tolerance in the face of tyranny is no virtue.

And really, is it so bad to consider the implications of Romney’s record when the nomination is over?

Isn’t it very important that voters know that Romney actually told people to join Mormonism while Mormonism was the most influential organ of bigotry in america?

Is it really bigotry to have a problem with these views?

No, I welcome an honest look at my record of supporting the pre 1980s racism that I championed.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  47. And again, the Mormon church refuses to repudiate these views, at least as recently as the late 1990s when some Mormons begged the church to admit it was wrong to say blacks were cursed by God.

All the church offers is the view that the curse is lifted. That Blacks are forgiven for being an “inferior species” to use the church’s own words from the time Romney agreed with them.

In fact, the church claims that to reject the truth of these views means one cannot join the priesthood. You have to agree to get where Romney was, and that’s disturbing. A real test of character.

What’s the point of admitting you’re wrong about something, if you refuse to let anyone say it was very, very wrong? What’s the point of improving one’s self if you cry bigot when people tell the truth about my own past?

No, I welcome this scrutiny! It’s certain to come up in debates against Obama, after all. We can’t just stick our head in the sand until after nomination!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  48. You know how Obama managed to scrub and white-wash a lot of his past before he ran for president?

I’m trying to do the same thing.

If people realize that I’m not even that popular in Texas they might wonder why I’ve got all these unhinged supporters who think I’ve got a shot running for president. Heck, I’ve got a tough enough time running for reelection for governor with the challengers that come from my own party.

I’ve got to get those public opinion polls in Texas buried because people will figure out there’s something wrong with the whole picture. Dayum!

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  49. “No, I welcome an honest look at my record of supporting the pre 1980s racism that I championed.”

Mitt – You fooled me. I thought you and your dad were both on the record opposing your church’s stand on race. Maybe that’s another of your flip flops like mine on gardasil, when the legislature, the rat bastages, opposed my mandate even though I flew into a few spittle flecked rages.

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  50. Barack Obama, do you believe all men and women are equal?

    [Perfunctory nonsense PC blather]

Mitt Romney, do you agree with the profound sexism of saying a man can go to superheaven, but a woman cannot unless a man chooses to bring her there? Do you agree that women are held responsible for causing men to desire to sin, even if the man does the touching, etc? Do you agree with the excommunication of women who argue against this doctrine? If so, how do you rectify that against your priesthood, where you claim to agree with these concepts implicitly?

    [Stammers]

General Unfair but Realistic Election Debate Moderator (cb3719)

  51. Mitt – You fooled me. I thought you and your dad were both on the record opposing your church’s stand on race.

Yes, you are mistaken! I couldn’t have become a priest and sold Mormonism to children while it gave zero room for this opposition.

Of course, I oppose it now, because I have no choice. I have to agree. That’s what it means to be a priest.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  52. I really have to say I find Romney’s church radical and indeed racist. No one who has been to a church like that should be president.

    Rev. Wright (e7d72e)

  53. But don’t worry. While I actually helped spread this racist view throughout the world, I did it with prime time polish. The Romney Difference.

I saw what Mormonism represented before 1980, and volunteered to make more of it instead of fighting the church, because, hey, that would probably mean being excommunicated.

And of course, this won’t come up in the general election. I won’t have any problems explaining this.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  54. Mitt – Listen, I really shouldn’t talk much about race stuff after I got everybody fooled over that rock story. Man, we loved the name of that ranch. Plus, it pisses the crap out me just I had to back off the Confederate license plates because I’m running for president. I absolutely love junk like that. We have gotten way too PC in this country and nobody has a sense of humor anymore. Heck, I can’t even call Mexicans beaners any more without people getting upset.

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  55. I really have to say I find Romney’s church radical and indeed racist. No one who has been to a church like that should be president.

    Comment by Rev. Wright — 11/18/2011 @ 10:59 am

I can understand. Frankly, my church’s pre 1980 view was clearly much more racist than anything you’ve said.

But now that it’s been changed slightly, I follow like I’m told.

Of course, that means I think blacks were forgiven for the curse. Not that blackness isn’t caused by the curse of Cain.

But don’t worry, I’m sure the press will give me the same pass that they gave Barack Obama. After all, he said he wasn’t in the church when you said your terrible comments, and I … well … no, I kinda volunteered to spread these views.

    Crap.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  56. Mitt – Listen, I really shouldn’t talk much about race stuff after I got everybody fooled over that rock story.

Don’t worry about it. Everyone knows that this story wasn’t true, but that Mormonism really did have a tremendous and disgusting problem with bigotry prior to around 1980, and that I volunteered to spread it. Not some word on a rock from before I was born, but the idea that blacks were, to use the church’s language, “an inferior species”.

And of course, even today, the church’s view is that blacks are forgiven for that sin. Not that the church was always wrong about this curse.

I’m sure the press will give me a total pass for this, almost as though the story were untrue as that rock story was about you.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  57. Heck, I can’t even call Mexicans beaners any more without people getting upset.

Oh dude, just put them in their place on my lawn.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  58. > Oh dude, just put them in their place on my lawn.

  61. 🙁

    Frowny the sad frowner (cb3719)

  62. I totally intend to give Romney the benefit of the doubt on this stuff. Why would I even find the current Mormon view that I am black because god cursed the inferior black “species” when Mormons say I’ve been forgiven for this for less than half of my life? Sounds legit to me.

    Gwen Ifill (cb3719)

  63. Mitt – Don’t let yourself get down over all this flack you’re taking over RomneyCare. Everybody knows you got screwed by Deval Patrick and the legislature after the fact.

That mandate opt out that was supposed to be in there, letting people and businesses buy cheap catastrophic level health coverage? Yeah, those Democrat geniuses decided to get rid of it and force people to buy gold-plated almost dollar one coverage including in vitro, dental, chiropractic, substance abuse, and all the other expensive goodies. Honest people know that but Democrats and the media just want make the case that RomneyCare is the same as ObamaCare. After Deval Patrick was through with it it was, but when it was passed. Just not that many honest people out there these days.

Man, I would not have wanted to be in your shoes with an 85% Democrat legislature that could override all your vetoes. How many did you use again, over 1,000? It’s a miracle you were able to balance the budget, cut taxes and put away a $2 billion rainy day fund in that type of environment. My hat is off to you.

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  64. Mitt – Don’t let yourself get down over all this flack you’re taking over RomneyCare. Everybody knows you got screwed by Deval Patrick and the legislature after the fact.

Oh, I don’t lose a moment of sleep over it. In fact, I take pride in how Ted Kennedy, my friend and Romneycare co-architect, agreed with my begging, from the day I signed the bill into law, that Romneycare would need federal dollars bailing it out.

I also take great comfort in not thinking a bloated entitlement in MA would bankrupt the state. You say the democrats didn’t govern it properly? Oh. I’m shocked. I didn’t see that coming. Just kidding. Kinda baked into the cake.

I like to call Deval Patrick my legacy. I mean, when you govern like I did, you can’t be reelected anyway, so obviously that leads to a crappy successor from the left.

This is kinda what happened when Bush and Mccain really sucked at the end of the Bush administration. Their gift was Barack Obama becoming viable.

t’s a miracle you were able to balance the budget, cut taxes and put away a $2 billion rainy day fund in that type of environment. My hat is off to you.

Not even a miracle. A fiction. I just lied about that, and the next government discovered by ‘balanced budget’ was $1.3 billion in debt, and Romneycare has lost over $20 billion.

    Oops.

And it was easy to cut taxes. All you do is call all the tax hikes ‘loopholes’ and ‘fees’ and just because the state’s tax revenue skyrocketed, doesn’t mean there was an increase in taxation.

This is called “prime time polish”. It doesn’t smell like roses, but you can’t smell prime time TV. Pro tip.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  65. In fact, I’m sure the RINOs will be able to blame democrats for all the crap I’d do as president.

The same failure to reign in spending whatsoever, when it’s far higher than most other states had, is my defining characteristic. I’ll find new things for government to do for you! No need to cut anything. This is why the establishment likes me. Only a sucker would go to DC promising to make DC as inconsequential in your life. How can I get any credit for prosperity if I’m just keeping the government from doing new things?

Stupid stupid stupid. That’s how Rick Perry governed. Sucker. All that did was help Texans. It didn’t help Perry. It wasn’t prime time politics.

Just imagine, when I let democrats run all over me, and I let the budget implode, I can just whine that they beat me, and then you can’t blame me.

It’s not like people even want a Chris Christie style stubborn conservative leader to take on a liberal infrastructure. No, better for the RINO to try to split the difference with the far left. You know, strong gun control increases when they want super strong. Or Romneycare, when they want socialism. That’s really helpful to conservatives. They love it. The Romney Difference!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  66. “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

Does this or does this not mean anything? If the constitution says Papists and Hindoos and Mohammedans and Jews can be president, despite what the founders believed about those peoples’ beliefs, why not Mormons?

If you or I believed God didn’t want black priests in His church, who would we be to question Him? And if He suddenly changed His mind, ditto.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  67. Rick

There are a lot more Baptists and Evangelicals out there than there are Mormons so I know you have experience in large numbers of bigots and racists supporting your campaign. We’re talking Texas after all.

I know you’ve had trouble controlling them in the past, but it’s best not to stir them up. After all, you’ve got tons of them there in the South.

    Mitt Romney (bf33e9)

  68. If you or I believed God didn’t want black priests in His church, who would we be to question Him? And if He suddenly changed His mind, ditto.

    Comment by Milhouse — 11/18/2011 @ 11:34 am

    Amen. I agree 100%.

There are a lot more Baptists and Evangelicals out there than there are Mormons so I know you have experience in large numbers of bigots and racists supporting your campaign. We’re talking Texas after all.

Hmmm, sounds like a sockpuppeteer is a bit of a hypocrite? Why assume evangelicals are largely bigoted? It’s not like one has to make such an assumption about those who actually agree that blacks are “an inferior species”.

Sounds like some kind of deflection.

    But again, I agree 100%!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  69. I know you’ve had trouble controlling them in the past

Jeez, Rick. It’s like you don’t even want to control people? What’s up with that?

You don’t force them to give away their guns, you don’t force them to buy health insurance, you don’t force them to say what you want. Loser.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  70. All Rick said was “I disagree”

He didn’t condemn people for having a different opinion?

    What a loser!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  71. Mitt – Even some liberals are giving you props for the differences between what you did and ObamaCare. Like I said bvefore, not that many honest people out there today:

“If Romney had stayed on as governor, or if he had been succeeded by another Republican rather than Democrat Deval Patrick, “the law would have looked very, very different,” said Amy Lischko, who served as commissioner of the Division of Health Care Finance and Policy when the law was passed.

The story of Romney’s original vision for health care could easily get lost in the presidential race. That’s especially true now that the Supreme Court is set to review President Barack Obama’s health reform legislation, which draws key elements from the Massachusetts law.

And ultimately, it may not make a big difference to the voters. Romney can’t avoid being judged on the version he signed into law — just as Obama, who didn’t want an individual mandate when he was a presidential candidate, signed it into law anyway and is now stuck with it.

“The fact is, he [Romney] signed it,” said Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts economist and a key architect of the law.

But whenever people hear about that law — and especially about Romney’s individual mandate — they’ll get a clearer picture if they hear the rest of the story.

The law that is in place in Massachusetts today is one part Romney and one part Democratic Legislature. Yes, the individual mandate was his idea — but his version was different. And there were legislative overrides of eight Romney vetoes, and regulations put in place by the Massachusetts Connector Board, a bipartisan board of stakeholders and governmental appointees charged with making key decisions about health care in the state.

Romney has been repeatedly forced to defend the central (and perhaps most controversial) piece of the law, the individual mandate, as a “plan that was right for Massachusetts.”

“We dealt with a challenge that we had, a lot of people that were expecting government to pay their way. And we said, you know what? If people have the capacity to care for themselves and pay their own way, they should,” Romney said at a Republican presidential candidate debate in Las Vegas last month.

But what Romney doesn’t mention is that his original plan for an individual mandate included an “opt-out,” which would have allowed people who didn’t want to buy insurance avoid the mandate penalty if they purchased a kind of bond that would cover them in catastrophic events.

“Romney’s mandate was certainly a lighter mandate,” said Lischko. “If people wanted to pay out of pocket for doctors visits, we wanted to let them — but make sure everyone had some type of catastrophic coverage. The individual mandate as it stands today was determined through regulations after the law was passed.”

Lischko, who is now an associate professor at Tufts Medical School, noted that when the law was signed in April 2006, Romney had already announced he would not seek a second term and the law he signed “was fairly broad,” leaving much of the details to be filled in by the next administration.

In fact, both liberals and Romney himself agree on this point.”

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  72. Does this or does this not mean anything? If the constitution says Papists and Hindoos and Mohammedans and Jews can be president, despite what the founders believed about those peoples’ beliefs, why not Mormons?

No, it basically means nothing, democratically.

In fact, don’t you think people should have rejected Obama for supporting the bigotry of Rev Wright? No, they shouldn’t sue the federal government, saying Obama is not eligible because of his religion. To that extent you are correct.

But voters rejecting someone for supporting a bigoted religion? That’s entirely constitutional. But it’s not a problem for me, since the lefty media will surely give me the same pass they gave Obama. You can count on it!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  73. Even some liberals are giving you props for the differences between what you did and ObamaCare.

I know, right? Liberals love me.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  74. Rick Perry is God’s gift to the American people. He is my man, yes he is.

    Dustin (09a0f9)

  75. I mean, check this out.

Ted Kennedy and I collaborated on Romneycare before my guys collaborated with Obama on Obamacare.

It’s different in many respects. Namely, I was in hiding when Obamacare was debated, and it was a different year entirely. Also, they are spelled differently.

You can see that both are predictably job killing money pits, and oppressive to liberty, but they aren’t exactly the same. In ways that don’t matter very much, they are totally different!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  76. In fact, don’t you think people should have rejected Obama for supporting the bigotry of Rev Wright? No, they shouldn’t sue the federal government, saying Obama is not eligible because of his religion. To that extent you are correct.

So are you saying I shouldn’t vote for any of the idolaters up there on the stage? Because every damn one of them believes in at least three gods.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  77. So are you saying I shouldn’t vote for any of the idolaters up there on the stage? Because every damn one of them believes in at least three gods.

    Comment by Milhouse — 11/18/2011 @ 11:49 am

Every damn one of them has beliefs. The idea all these beliefs are equal is simply incorrect. I would say Rev Wright is not equal to Billy Graham. The Joe Smith who explained that blacks were “an inferior species” in 1970 is not equal to Mother Theresa.

Legally, it is not constitution to have a law saying someone can’t be President if they worship Satan. But legally, there is nothing wrong with a voter saying they will reject someone on that sort of basis.

Rick Perry is God’s gift to the American people. He is my man, yes he is.

    Comment by Dustin — 11/18/2011 @ 11:47 am

He probably has dark skin. Let the superior species handle the thinking.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  78. The Joe Smith who explained that blacks were “an inferior species” in 1970 is not equal to Mother Theresa.

Just to clarify, the former was 100% right, and the latter was largely wrong.

    Not equal at all.

And don’t expect this to come up in the general election. It’s not an electability concern at all. No. The same generosity I get on this issue today will stay with me all the way to election day, just like with Mccain’s physical problems due to his POW years.

    The press is my friend.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  79. It’s time for another visual lesson.

Watch as the member of the superior species pushes the cart. The cart represents MA with democrats. The blond represents Romneycare.

Sure, it’s predictable that she will fall on her face, but that’s because the cart is inherently unable to handle the responsibility of Romneycare without bankruptcy level spending.

It’s not the Blond’s fault she cooperated with the cart. She apparently was clueless.

So let’s tip our hats to RINO leadership making this possible because it’s really just not their fault when the inevitable occurs.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  80. Not me!

Unemployed five years and I’m actually proud of it!

Work is for morons like Rick Perry.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  81. “I remind you that no man who makes disparaging remarks concerning those of another race can consider himself a true disciple of Christ… Brethren, there is no basis for racial hatred among the priesthood of this church. If any within the sound of my voice is inclined to indulge in this, let him go before the lord and ask for forgiveness and be no more involved in such.”

    – the late Gordon B. Hinckley, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

    ColonelHaiku (09a0f9)

  82. Unfortunately, there is some dishonesty from the Mormon church about its actual practices and history.

In fact, training videos from the pre 1980s explaining that blacks were cursed by God are posted to youtube and then removed within hours or days at most for copyright violations (the church technically owns the footage, but it’s fair use to show us the truth).

“there is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient; more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less” (Doctrines of Salvation 1:61).

-Late 1960s quote from the late Joe Smith President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  83. I remind you that no man who makes disparaging remarks concerning those of another race can consider himself a true disciple of Christ…

    This is evasive, too.

The church refuses to repudiate its view that the reason blacks are black is a curse from God. They say blacks are forgiven for this curse, so you can’t disparage them with your remarks anymore if you’re a Christian.

That’s not acceptable. It’s still bigotry.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  84. He needed the devil and a great many of those who do his bidding to keep men straight, that we may learn to place our dependence on God, and trust in Him, and to observe his laws and keep his commandments. When he destroyed the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, he suffered a descendant of Cain to come through the flood in order that he might be properly represented upon the earth” (Journal of Discourses 23:336).

    -LDS President John Taylor

He’s saying we have black people because they are Satan’s proper representatives on earth.

The church was asked to repudiate this view in the late 1990s and refused. You see, God forgives blacks for being the devil’s representatives, and it’s wrong to disparage them for their curse. But the racism inherent in this view is still here today.

But that’s not really the point.

Romney volunteered to spread Mormonism BEFORE the mormon god forgave blacks. He volunteered to spread one of the most pervasively bigoted views, before it decided the curse was forgiven.

Except the part where I’m not joking. The liberal media will crush Romney over this. Moderates will hear about this five million times. Crying that it’s bigoted or that we should just ignore the issue will not be very effective.

Too little, since the Mormons refuse to repudiate that blacks are black because of all the horrible things Mormons have claimed up to the 1980s. They just say it’s rude to talk about it now? That it’s forgiven that blacks are so inferior?

Too little. It’s a nice platitude, but too little.

I guess some people think they should lie to better evangelize their religion, but this shows that Hinckley has zero credibility.

But I do appreciate his comments that they excommunicate people who do what the church used to do. It’s an admission that all the members are in lockstep. One day they must do X, the next they must not do X.

This lady seems more credible to me.

  92. 1978 was when the ban was lifted, to the joy of church members.

    Comment by ColonelHaiku — 11/18/2011 @ 12:54 pm

Isn’t that amazing? They are saying blacks are an inferior species all the up until nearly the 1980s?

    That’s insane.

And now, “the ban is lifted”. God forgives blacks for being cursed.

This is a lot different from saying “we were wrong to say blackness is a curse”.

There are currently three LDS temples in Africa, with hundreds of thousands of black church members.

    Comment by ColonelHaiku — 11/18/2011 @ 12:55 pm

Exactly. The church had no choice but to allow blacks to be priests because it became completely impossible to ban them in south America and Africa. Almost every member was at least partly from the “inferior species” that Mormon Presidents HATED with the fury of 1000 suns as Satan’s representatives on Earth.

So they ‘lifted the ban’. The very minimum they would have to do. They didn’t repudiate the hate. They instead piously say the reasons Blacks are cursed is now forgiven.

Do you think someone should be credited if they were forced?

    Biased Media (cb3719)

  93. I’ll give Hinckley credit for this.

When asked why Mormonism was quite racist prior 1978, again, including the time Romney volunteered to spread the view, Hinckley admits he has no explanation, but agrees with the summary.

It’s true. Something really was wrong with those who volunteered to spread racism so late as the 1970s. We knew better. Shame shame shame.

    Biased Media (cb3719)

  94. This disgusting trash was produced by relatively contemporary Mormons. The worst part comes after the two minute point.

In fact, it’s often pulled down via copyright claims by Jeremiah Productions.

Now, they dismiss this very recent view with incredibly vague ‘oh, we should all love and be nice’ comments. But they refuse to admit this doctrine was wrong. It’s just forgiven now.

This is what Romney volunteered to spread throughout the world.

Again, as horrible as this cartoon is, it wasn’t produced to criticize Mormonism. It’s not satirical, either. This is what Mormons used to TEACH KIDS.

    Biased Media (cb3719)

  95. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days
of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I.

-Joe Smith, a dick, explains how he’s better than Jesus, and the proof is the degree of loyalty that is enforced in his church.

Not that I care. I am delighted with religious freedom. Everyone is entitled to their views, though everyone is also entitled to criticize, and this is what some Mormons find intolerable. Some call it bigotry.

This is a facet that reminds me a lot of Scientology. They also call it bigotry if someone explains the aspects of the view someone finds disgusting.

Most people will find saying blacks are forgiven for being inferior to be incorrect. Many will even say that’s disgusting. they are not bigots.

    Biased Media (cb3719)

come on, let’s not turn this into an anti-mormon hatefest, okay? if you have to whack at them, at least make it into a half-@$$ed joke.

I have deep disagreements with much of mormon doctrine, but i have found most mormons to be decent people. So let’s cool it, please.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  97. Fair enough.

Actually, most Mormons I know are decent people too.

My point is that the biased media will definitely run with this, and the effects can’t be ignored just because conservatives tend to say this kind of argument is off limits.

That’s the joke. It’s not particularly funny, but that’s the point. The Media will ask Obama a softball, and then ask Romney something that relates to, at the very least, the racism problem.

Many will say ‘but rev wright?’ And they will have a point, I guess, as the moderates reject Romney anyway.

But are Mormons bad people? Of course not. But these views are dark. I’d say mistaken. No non-Mormon can say they are sinless, of course.

    Biased Media (cb3719)

  98. baised

okay now i am getting it. okay. i guess you sounded too much like a guy i confronted the other day who really did hate mormons and got it mixed up.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  99. No, I was out of line. I went too far. It’s true I was lampooning the biased media, but I can’t honestly say I wasn’t bashing Mormons, and that was wrong and I apologize.

Oh wait, that’s not a hyperlink. Cause…? I guess maybe cause you’re making stuff up?

Al Gore’s father was a great man.

Amen to that! Glad to see you coming around, buddy!

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  104. Mitt, blaming you for what Deval Patrick and the legislature did to your healthcare bill is like Obama blaming Bush for Obama’s spending.

Naw, I think any moron could predict that if I didn’t even run for office, I would be reelected.

I also think any moron could predict that a brand new massive entitlement in the hands of the MA government would be atrociously expensive.

Hell, Ted and I agreed on the day I signed it that MA can’t afford it. We needed federal dollars to bail out Romneycare before it was even signed into law.

Deval Patrick is my legacy, and I’m proud of it. People creating new entitlements that bankrupt the state and kill jobs know what they are doing.

The difference is, I bring that Romney charm! I polish that little brown rose until it’s ready for prime time. I have all manner of excuses prepared for the inevitable problems I’ll leave behind if I’m president.

What, Obamacare is still a failure after Romney’s out of office? Not my fault! Not my responsibility to fix, either, so I won’t repeal it… just promise to use technocrat exemptions.

What, spending levels are too high? So what? They were too high when I left MA, higher than when I got there, but the democrats got them high. Not my fault for failing to fight the good fight! Why should someone be judged for failing to accomplish anything, when they have a nice smile?

And Social Security… I promise to protect it from those evil bastards who think it’s a ponzi scheme. And yet I also refuse to take credit for the costs, because, hey, democrats like the policies too, and I enable them by compromising with them so much!

See, this is what that moron Rick Perry doesn’t understand. I want to USE government to SOLVE everything. The Democrats take it slightly farther than I wanted when I enabled them, so it’s their fault, but I get credit for all the good it did.

Whatever good banning guns and forcing healthcare on those who don’t want it caused, I guess. That’s the Romney Difference!

BTW, it’s very touching you’re pretending TAMU is similar to a religion saying blacks are an inferior species. That’s very persuasive.

    Mitt Romney (cb3719)

  105. Gorgeous and unblammable!

Is it really my fault, or your fault for counting on me to accomplish something more than being a big government technocrat? I mean, who seriously relied on me to accomplish anything in MA? Only a fool did so, and only a fool does so today.

So is it my fault if my leadership maintains course too long? Besides, I’m so pretty.

In 1964, “five freshmen became the first African-Americans in A&M Corps of Cadets.” So my guess is that when you enrolled in 1968, there were at least 5 African-Americans in the Corps at A&M … and probably more since there were a total of 46 African-American undergraduate students in 1969.

DRJ – We needed some around to polish our boots. We’re not as stupid as those Mormons.

    Rick Perry (bf33e9)

  132. I think the Mormon ideas about blacks being an inferior species are rather obviously rooted in the times when people craved justifications for slavery. That was Joe Smith’s world. It was ad hoc. They needed to explain their ugliness towards their slaves, so they did with this curse.

So this ‘those mormons didn’t keep blacks around for boot polishing’ is a bizarre retort.

I think it’s pretty fair to ask every Mormon if they think being black is the result of a curse that God has recently forgiven blacks for. In 1980. Coincidentally when society forced Mormons to do this. They had no choice whatsoever, and that’s why they outlasted every other prominent group of Americans that isn’t pure fringe, and why they refused to repudiate the actual hate… opting instead to just say blacks are forgiven and the curse is lifted as we shouldn’t talk about them that way now.

I think it’s also fair to ask Mormons if they would volunteer to spread Mormonism if it still professed the inferiority of the “negro species”. You know, before 1978. Would you volunteer to spread a view that hugely and obviously discriminated against good people because they are the “devil’s representatives”?

Deflecting this with silly comments about how everyone else is racist too is, perhaps, telling of a void of a good answer for why Mormonism, today, still has failed to repudiate the idea that blacks were cursed.

Unfair biased mean media snakes (cb3719)

  133. btw, I bet many Mormons would say “no, I don’t think black skin was caused by a curse from God. That’s terrible.”

Most Mormons are very good people, after all. Most of them would probably say they would leave the church if it insisted upon that view from the highest levels. And they would be telling the truth.

  134. Mitt, thank for running for president. You have taken the public’s focus off all the negative aspects of Islam that we at CAIR make a living lying about. Even though you marched in civil rights marches in the 1960s with your dad and there is no evidence of bigotry in you background, you bring out the religious bigots like nobody’s business. Face it, people just hate Mormons and they hate you. Guilt by association is a time worn smear. Put the two together and it’s a powerful combination.

    Keep up the good work!

    Ibrahim Hooper (bf33e9)

  135. Rick,

I suppose the lesson Republicans or conservatives should learn from all the flack I’m taking of the health care law is never to push or propose any law in a blue or purple state because its intentions might get distorted or changed later by your opposition. I think it’s a cowardly and weapons grade stupid argument, but that’s what people seem to be saying. Do nothing and you’re fine. Do something that your 85% Democrat legislature and the next governor can change later and you’re toast.

Look at John Kasich in Ohio. Using the same logic he never should have pushed that collective bargaining reform bill. It was overturned. A complete waste of time and money on the part on behalf of the Ohio taxpayers. Look at Wisconsin, they’re still squabbling over Walker’s reforms. He would have been better off doing nothing using the the logic of Massachusetts critics.

Luckily Rick, you don’t have that problem in a red state. You can do whatever you want, like a hot knife through butter, until people figure out it really is stupid, like that Trans Texas Corridor boondoggle that made Boston’s Big Dig look like a home improvement project.

Man, I wish I had your legislature when I was governor.

    Mitt Romney (bf33e9)

  136. was that before was the Big Dig or was that after before the Trans-Texas Corridor was?

You know the great thing about these non-specific false allegations, Herman can’t disprove any of them. Even Sharon Bialek’s allegations are all she said/he said. None of the other women are saying exactly what Herman is supposed to have done, but it doesn’t make a damn difference.

He turned into a sexual predator for three years in a forty year business career? People believe that noise? Seriously?

Damn, I love being a Democrat operative lawyer.

  148. Civil liberties are all well and good UNLESS someone is prepared to react to your freedom of expression with violence.

In such cases the freely expressing person is in the wrong, and the person threatening violence is in the right, because God — and the Constitution — knows that two different groups expressing pride simultaneously is, like, one expression of pride too many for one 24-hour period!
