Mrs. Patterico Visits the Range

Not bad for a first-timer, huh?

Not posted: a very attractive picture of her holding the Glock 9mm she used.

Sorry, AZ Bob. That stays in the family.

I’ll show it to you next time I see you.

She’s not shooting in the picture. It’s a shot of her posing with the pistol.

  11. Excellent for any time, let alone the first time. The pattern on the right looks like an arrow but the grouping is what’s really impressive. Well done, Mrs. P.

  26. That’s good shooting!

Women who are serious about it usually shoot very well, because they don’t let their egos tell them they are the smartest person in the room, and they really soak in the fundamentals of marksmanship.

The shots all line up vertically. That shows she’s got an excellent trigger squeeze, which on a Glock is not always the easiest thing because of those funky triggers (which I think are a little heavy to boot).

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  27. As a former rifle, pistol, shotgun, home firearms safety teacher, not a bad grouping. (Also former collegate smallbore competitor. My match rifle is in the gun case).

There is some responsibility in owning a weapon. Best for home defense is the basic 12 guage pump shotgun. (There is nothing like the sound of the action closing, even in the dark.) And you can hit something in the dark with it.

To get really good with a pistol requires training and practice. If you want to use it in self defense, the you have to be able to draw a bead and kill ’em. (You can regret doing so later.) Not everyone can do that.

So how much practice time have you reserved on the range? 🙂

  29. A shotgun for a small woman means a 20 gauge, which is not really that effective. I’d rather have a 9mm pistol than a 20 gauge.

12 gauge is the best home defense, I totally agree, provided the shooter is capable with that kind of weapon, and the home is easy to aim a large object around in.

BTW, I think 9mms are affordable to practice with (20 cents per shot). And I can’t argue with Cheshire’s point about practice.

I’m glad Mrs Patterico has ample reason to feel confident as a naturally good shooter, though.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  30. Plus, concealment.

I’m a big fan of women having concealed carry permits. Truly a great equalizer.

    Captain Ned (5659f5)

  33. Actually Dustin, there are a number of “home defense” shotguns that, while being “barely legal” in barrel length, have pistol grips as opposed to stocks, which makes the tight quarters of doors and hallways much easier to work with.

Having shot one, I can say that while hip shooting is never the ideal, for home defense it is perfectly workable, and with about a box-worth of shells every so often, you can be comfortable enough with the recoil to be able to do it with some fair level of confidence.

And even if you go 20 gauge, that’s still a very large amount of pain on the receiving end.

  40. Actually Dustin, there are a number of “home defense” shotguns that, while being “barely legal” in barrel length, have pistol grips as opposed to stocks, which makes the tight quarters of doors and hallways much easier to work with.

    Great point.

And even if you go 20 gauge, that’s still a very large amount of pain

It’s a lot of energy, if you hit the target (it’s not going to sweep the whole room in the dark, and I suspect the person with a familiar 9mm and a flashlight is much better off).

To each his own, though. Not really my place telling others what to shoot.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  41. Just put yourselves in the situation where you need protection. You may need a free hand for a phone. You may want to be a little more mobile, or operate doors and light switches.

A 12 gauge is, for sure, the best home defense if you don’t need to worry about such compromises.

Me, I like .357 magnums. But semiauto pistols are sweet. Shotguns, I don’t have much experience with. But I have a sweet lever action carbine in 357 that might be helpful.

It’s all choice. And I tip my hat to Ms. Patterico. If I still lived in SoCal, I would offer to buy the Pattericos lunch if we could go to a range together. Phillipe’s?

  46. But I have a sweet lever action carbine in 357

Those are so cool. I’ve always wanted one.

Cheshire’s point are all accurate. And I think it’s worth noting that what he’s recommending is inexpensive as well as effective.

I was trying out a relative’s new LCP (a very small pistol) and it was pretty painful to shoot after a few dozen rounds. I’d rather throw rocks.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  47. Dustin, I used to like to experiment with odd firearms (there was a great range in San Diego at the time). I fired a Desert Eagle in .50AE. It has gas-controlled recoil, so it was pleasant to fire (thought the gun was freaking heavy). If you used reloads, they stovepiped. Hot loads ran the gas system just fine.

But the most painful handgun I have ever fired? a .44 magnum derringer. I thought I had broken my hand. Jeez.

My carbine is the Marlin 1894S replica. It’s beautiful. I also have a Ruger Vaquero that is almost too pretty to shoot. Notice I said almost.

    Simon Jester (1bcccd)

  48. If the lower ones were the later ones in the group, then you should be careful that she’s not starting to fatigue and develop a flinch.

(Assuming she’s a relative beginner) Its important early on to be careful not to have a beginner shoot to fatigue and have that fatigue reinforce bad habits.

Its always fun to introduce a new shooter. Although there is often a dynamic with spouses teaching spouses…. if you avoid that, more congratulations.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  49. Unless you have a lot of practice opportunity, getting familiar with one gun is a good idea. OTOH, being familiar with a few is also nice. I prefer a .45 ACP if I have to do a run out to the barn at night–the local kitties weigh 100 lbs. It doesn’t conceal worth a damn (in summer), so something tiny is good for social purposes.

Agreed on the 12 gauge. Haven’t been able to persuade Mrs. Red to work with it and haven’t tried/can’t afford any .410 adapters for introduction purposes, but it’s ready.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  57. Link fixed.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  58. Well done. I think it is so important to train the spouse properly. My wife and I worked until we found a gun she was comfortable shooting and could hit with. It greatly increases confidence and I feel much better when she is alone.

A shotgun is nice but there are too many situations where it will just not be in hand when needed. A shotgun beside the bed is too easily found in the intruder’s hands when he wakes you up, where the handgun under the pillow is more likely to be a surprise for him rather than you. There are also too many situations where I would carry a handgun at my side or in it’s holster as I check out a noise where I would not carry a long arm. If checking out the house I would want one hand free for a flashlight, light switches, doors, gathering family members and close quarter defense, as I carry the handgun inconspicuously at my side. Much less chance of finding yourself fighting someone for your own gun.

As others have said, practice and confidence are golden.

I had two pump shotguns and gave them away. If I need it for defense I want a round chambered. I do not want to advertise my position and tell someone I am armed by working the slide. While the sound might make someone run it might also draw fire.

I’ve never had the chance to try this. I’m sure it’s quite a trial on the wrist. I think Scott was referring to a 20 gauge, which is substantially less recoil. There’s a reason folks put those shotguns on their large solid bones to fire. They are not lacking for power.

Then again, a Glock in .45 is downright pleasant to shoot, accurate, and is also not lacking for power. That’s what my wife’s always been most comfortable with. Factor in our dog, and I’m fortunate that I don’t have to worry much about my wife being secure. If anything, she’s got more reason to worry about me.

    Ah, feminism.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  69. Dustin: .45 auto or .45 G.A.P.? And is it your favorite too?

    Beldar (5a73df)

  70. .45 auto (or ACP for others).

My personal preference is my USP in .40, just because I like the large slide stop and safety catch and a double action. I confess I’m more accurate with my wife’s Glock 21 (which is the .45). It’s simply the most accurate handgun I’ve ever tried. I’ve seen customized 1911s costing many times more than the Glock that aren’t its equal.

My wife is not an amazon by any stretch, and the Glock is very easy for her to shoot.

    Comment by JD — 9/25/2011 @ 8:13 pm

I’m going to have to try this sometime.

A 20 gauge delivers 800 ft lbs of power whereas the Glock .45 delivers 500, with the Glock itself absorbing most of the recoil, instead of the shooter.

And if you’re hit with a bullet that big, your blood pressure is probably going to drop so fast that you’re not going to be able to react.

And while the shotgun is less precise and needs less precision, the Glock can have many follow up shots and be completely reloaded in a couple of seconds.

Just my opinion. I’d probably grab the shotgun anyway if something crazy went down.

  77. When choosing a firearm for home defense, you must also take into account what is around your house. I live in a duplex. Any missed shots from a .357, .45, .50, etc. could easily penetrated the walls and injure or kill a neighbor.

With this in mind, I really want a Taurus Judge. This is a 5 shot revolver that can be loaded with a combination of .410 shotgun shells or .45 Colt ammunition. From my perspective, the ideal would be 3 rounds of .410 bird shot and 2 rounds of .45 Colt. The first three rounds are for you to get calmed down, while the last two are to be fired for effect. 😎

Too bad these are illegal in California. Probably be a few less people being killed or injured by bullets that have passed through a wall into another room or building.

On a similar note, when my Godchildren turned 14, their father and I took them for gun safety courses and after passing the test, some range time. The girl was a crack shot from the get go. The boy took a little longer but by the time he was 16 could pickup pretty much any handgun and after learning how it operated, put 10 for 10 in the 8 ring at 7 yards. While he seldom shoots now, his sister married a SWAT sniper and spends plenty of time with him on the range. I am so proud. 😎

I have barbed wire and claymores around mine.

That, combined with some dug-in M60s, and a tactical nuke or two (just in case things get really hairy) is ideal for home defense.

  86. Good shooting! I shot my first pistol (Colt Model 1911-A1) in August 1962 as an 18 year old plebe at the US Naval Academy. Her targets are a lot better than mine. As a range rat who shoots 100 rounds per week, I find women are generally better shots than men.

She’s right handed. Looking at her pattern, I might ask if she is squeezing the trigger with the middle of the last part of her index finger. If you pull with the joint, it pulls rounds down and right . Another technique is called “hard left hand, soft right hand.” Support the weight of the gun and control recoil with the left hand, using the right to squeeze the trigger.

About self defense: The gun in your hand is better than one in the safe or the car. I carry a 380 ACP everywhere. It’s not that whimpy a caliber if you use Hornady XTP bullets.

As for home defense, put in flood lights on motion detectors, get a security system and a big dog who barks. Although I have a shotgun, I keep two 45s on the night stand and a 9 mm in my desk. I’ve hidden a gun and a survival knife in the bathroom.

Dustin: One comment about muzzle energy. The Model 1911 is designed for maximum pressure of 20,000 psi. If you are shooting a 230 grain 45 ACP and achieving 500 ft lbs, it is overloading the pistol. I load a 230 grain round nose over 5.0 grains of Bullseye and measure 850 fps muzzle velocity, the military load that has served well for 100 years gets about 370 ft-lbs.

    Arch (0baa7b)

  87. The Taurus Judge is not a good idea, marketing crap. 410 shotshells are crappy self defense rounds. There are more effective revolvers available.

    DohBiden (d54602)

  89. 82….. Only 5 shots? What if you need more, as wolves tend to travel in packs. Due to its’ extreme light weight, a 5.56 will not penetrate walls any more than a 9mm, and will still defeat soft body armor.
Not that you shouldn’t be cognizance about your surrounding, but are there THAT many uninvolved innocents killed by bullets passing through walls/building during self-defense events? I would think missing the perpetrator all together is more of an issue, maybe.

  92. Mrs. Patterico, similar targets are sold at public ranges as well. Its not the gun that “justifies” the shoot, its the mullet though, you might as well admit it.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  93. Well, at public ranges outside of unfree states like Massachusetts …

    SPQR (26be8b)

  94. Thanks, Arch, for the detail about power. In my experience, 500 ft lbs is not unusual at the top end of .45 acp, even factory ammunition. Especially with 185+P. But the specific details aside, my point was that this is a moderate loss of power from a 20 gauge shotgun, but you get so much in exchange with the recoil absorption of a modern pistol (hence much better follow shots), the free hand, the ease of storage and concealment, more ammo, etc etc. But the main thing is it’s just plain easier to shoot.

It’s not all about velocity, but power, which I pretty much see as the theme of the .45.

I have to try this technique you mentioned about using my left hand to absorb the recoil and support the pistol. It sounds really interesting. I doubt my left hand is up to the task.

I’m not expert, but I thought the pattern indicated a good trigger squeeze because the horizontal deviation was minor (especially if you ignore a few outliers, which I think you should for beginners). You’re 100% right about which part of the finger to use.
