That’s a Nice Marriage You Have There, Sarah Palin… It’d Be a Pity if Anything Happened to It…

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 7:50 am

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

That’s one of several creepy subtexts in this bit by Erik Wemple of the Washington Post, an exercise of rationalizing of what almost amounts to journalistic terrorism that deserves to be fisked in detail:

Glen Rice and Sarah Palin: I don’t want to know

The Business Insider loves to push journalistic frontiers. So I grimaced this morning when the publication picked up the now-on-fire story about Sarah Palin’s alleged premarital tryst with basketball star Glen Rice. The fling is said to have occurred in 1987, when Rice was a sharpshooting hoopster for the University of Michigan and Palin was a TV sports reporter.

I even sent Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget an e-mail asking him how he could possibly explain such an atrocity as publishing this rumor, as reported in the National Enquirer and sourced from the soon-to-be- published book on Palin by Joe McGinniss. Why pry into Palin’s premarital private life?

Then I remembered: Oh yeah, the whole abstinence-before-marriage thing.

In other words, he wrote an email to Blodget and Blodget decided he was not important enough to respond to, so he instead made up a defense of his own.

Via a three-year-old CNN story:

In a 2006 Eagle Forum questionnaire, Palin indicated that she supported funding abstinence-until-marriage education programs instead of teaching sex-education programs.

“Explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support,” Palin wrote in the conservative group’s questionnaire.

Yeah, I remember that bit the first time I heard it when it was offered as the fig leaf justifying the attacks on Britol Palin for the horrible crime of being a teenager who had sex with her teenage boyfriend.  You know, because that never happens.  First they assumed she was using no birth control because she got pregnant—you know, because birth control (short of surgery) is always 100% effective.  /sarcasm  And they asserted that this was surely then the result of Sarah Palin’s advocacy of abstinence only education and when I asked for proof she even advocated for it, they pointed at this survey.

But all the CNN article he links to says is that she won’t support “explicit sex-ed programs” which really isn’t the same as saying no sex education, now is it?  In fact the first time someone showed that to me, I said, “geez, all that seems to be saying is she doesn’t want kids to practice putting condoms on bananas.”  Which is actually almost exactly what she said about it in her book, Going Rogue:

(Pages 237-8.  You can verify for yourself without buying the book by searching inside it, here–and indeed that is why the word “condom” is highlighted.)

So she’s not even truly a hypocrite on the matter.  And Wemple lacks the intellectual curiosity to notice.  Why?  Because she has to be a hypocrite, because for all his feigned reluctance, he positively loves to publish this story.

Those two sentences open all kinds of ethical doors for reporters. Where even a national politician’s premarital sex habits of nearly a quarter-century ago are normally off-limits to media outlets, they move into the realm of fair game once that politician starts pushing abstinence education.

Hypocrisy is a quality that must be exposed in our political leaders: If Palin backs abstinence-only education and shuns talk of contraception and the like, then we are entitled to know whether her own lifestyle aligned with her rhetoric. And so we’re learning about Palin’s alleged Reagan-era sex life.

Yet I don’t want to know about Palin’s premarital sex life

Oh, poor me!  I have to learn all about the salacious, dirty details about Sarah Palin’s (alleged) sex life.

I don’t care if it involved a black basketball player or a white tetherball player.

And more of him protesting too much.  There was no need to mention that the alleged paramour was black let alone to highlight it this way.  His color is irrelevant.  But he feels the need to emphasize it because…  um, wait, why?  I mean it’s not like Sarah Palin is opposed to interracial sex.  I mean, given that her husband is part Inuit, she is arguably in an interracial relationship right now.  He is certainly non-white enough to pass the old infamous “one drop” rules that used to apply before Loving v. Virginia.  So why is Wemple bringing out the color of this alleged lover?

There are only two answers that make sense.  Either 1) because he thinks it will bother her supporters or 2) because it bothers him, despite his protests to the contrary.  So either he is a racist, or he is engaged in the cheap race baiting that liberals accuse conservatives of doing all the time.  For instance, you might recall the outcry over the add where a blond bimbo suggests she might want to have sex with Harold Ford.  Now, I will give you that the ad in question was tacky, but calling it racist was just silly.  But apparently the rule with liberals is that it is racist to suggest any possibility of attraction across racial lines.  It’s interesting how quickly the left assumes the role of enforcing sexual morality and even rules against racial “mixing” when it suits them.

Wemple goes on:

I don’t want to hear about whom other abstinence-only advocates may have chosen for partners, either.

All of which means that people should stop lobbying for abstinence -only education. It’s a bad idea on many levels. One of those levels is the media: It gives reporters every reason to investigate the most intimate moments of abstinence-only advocates.

And besides the whining nature of that (“It’s so horrible that you abstinence-only advocates force me to learn every lurid detail about your sex life!  And to make me demand to see video tape!  Or just a video showing porn stars simulating what others accused you of doing!”), besides that simpering element and hidden prurient desire is a hidden threat.  Do not advocate assistance-only sex ed—indeed, apparently you must support “bananas on condoms” style sex ed or something—or else every poorly sourced tawdry detail about your personal life will be put on display before the whole world.

And of course it would be your fault if I was forced to do that.  So in a real way you are asking for it.

———————————–

Via Insty who links to more refuting the claim that Palin was ever in favor of abstinence only education, and writes:

Regardless of the actual Sarah Palin’s opinions, the Sarah Palin in their minds is staunchly anti-sex, making anything that the real Sarah Palin does fodder for hypocrisy accusations for not matching up with what the imaginary Sarah Palin thinks. Yes, this is really how modern “journalism” works.

And indeed you might even say that Wemple is demonstrating prejudice towards her.  Imagine that.

Also, here’s a request for this thread.  Please don’t launch into a diatribe about how awful she would be as President.  That has no relevance to whether allegations this poorly sourced should be given the time of day.  The question is about Wemple’s ethics and fact-checking, not Sarah Palin’s fitness for the presidency.

Besides, I don’t think she is running anyway.

  1. Palin isn’t the only one to make the media look bad. Or, I suppose,to make the media make themselves look bad. But she’s the best at it. Gosh, it’s fun.
You’ll recall the media, which couldn’t keep an eye on John Edwards’ wandering whatsit, and the associated campaign fund shenanigans, being scooped by the Enquirer, while the NYT did have time to fake up a completely bogus story about McCain having an affair with a lobbyist.
Great bunch of folks. I wouldn’t let one of them babysit my pet rock. I bet their handshakes are kind of sweaty and limp. Eeesh.

    Richard Aubrey (cafc94)

  2. The only way it would be hypocrisy is if Sarah Palin herself received abstinence-only sex education. Does Wemple have any evidence that Palin was promiscuous after having taken an abstinence-only program?

What Wemple is arguing is analagous to a drug-addict who overcomes her addiction, cleans herself up, improves her life — and then supports a particular program designed to prevent kids from becoming drug addicts. According to Wemple’s line of reasoning, such a person would be a hypocrite because she herself was once an addict.

  3. How about there is no story, in the first place. From all indications, she has been in love with

  4. Actually, when the “journalist” wrote this…

“..Hypocrisy is a quality that must be exposed in our political leaders…”

…well, I had to laugh. Is this fellow looking for hypocrisy in the current administration?

    No, well, that’s different.

This is all just partisanship. And these personal attacks underscore a quite clear subtext of nasty sexism in the way many people deal with the former Governor.

    Simon Jester (51da6e)

  5. I hate to say this, but abstinence makes sense and is practiced by a lot of teens who could use more support and encouragement.

Hypocrisy, even in the extreme, does not make this false.

I question the motives of those who doubt the wisdom of abstinence. Perhaps they are looking for cover for their past foolishness? Or maybe they still value immediate gratification over responsible relationships, indulgence over health.

  8. Aaron, this post is a smart and well-done anatomy, but to (once again) cut the Gordian knot, all the exegesis in the world won’t change the minds of the left. The simple fact is, they HATE you. They HATE Sarah Palin. They HATE Rick Perry, the Tea Party, the national anthem, ordinary white Christian folks just going about their despicable cro-magnon non-diverse lives. Hate hate hate hate hate. It’s a primal, brain-stem thing with them, there’s nothing rational about it.

Sarah Palin in their eyes is the Terrifying Shiksa From Hell, who has the goddamn nerve to be white and have babies and be successful… I mean, can’t you understand how HORRIFYING that is? We’re in H.P. Lovecraft territory when it comes to this stuff, it’s completely irrational and instinctive.

You do a good service by trying to call them out, and maybe you’ll buck up morale on the right by anatomizing how malignant they are, but you won’t change any minds on the left, because they aren’t using their minds when it comes to these things, it’s all more like pheromones with these people.

How long will it be before the peripatetic Wemple joins his JournoList brethren at Media Matters?

  14. Let’s assume that Sarah Palin did actually support “abstinence only — and don’t you dare even mention birth control” sex education. And let’s assume that she was as promiscuous as a female dog in heat, randomly impaling herself on every male appendage she could find. Would that constitute hypocrisy? Or would it constitute experience that led her to reevaluate her life and support a policy that she believed to be more appropriate.

We think is is great when recovering alcoholics and drug addicts preach abstinence, because we consider them to have the moral authority to speak on the issue. We run “Scared Straight” programs in which convicted felons try to turn young people away from a life of crime. What is wrong with someone who has a history of promiscuity saying that abstinence is the way?

And ya Aaron, I’m one of those parents who supervise my minor children take them regularly to the doctor, have them educate them about how easy it is to get pregnant and have them work at womens shelters and thrift stores so they know its not easy to be a single mother – in fact its hell a part of our society that we dont talk about.

I mean weeks before she married Todd a basketball player confirmed she wanted sex. If its true its disturbing for the family for sure but Mrs Palin can turn this into a strength by admitting it and confronting it. If they get divorced – its because this is one of many incidents (those moments that happen in a marriage) that caused Todd to call it quits.

Palin was an adult 100% responsible for her actions, and she has used her clean wholesome persona for personal profit well beyond anyone but Al Gore.

  25. SarahW

No, whats stupid is we have someone who makes millions, MILLIONS, preaching something that perhaps she wasnt even a CLOSE advocate of Low Taxes, small government and family values.

We have people now everywhere constantly excusing a consenting adult from having to live with the consequences of her actions. She was in a relationship or considering a relationship with Todd and may have even been engaged when this incident happened.

the fact that a reporter had sex with the subject of her news story is also something people are glossing over.

This is the same woman who has falsely accused people of corruption based upon nothing.

    Now Sarah – thats stupid.

What’s going to happen when the next shoe drops?

    EricPWJohnson (2925ff)

  26. Let’s take a step back: Here we have a story that was published in the National Enquirer based on a allegation in a book written by a fanatical Palin hater.

By no standards of journalism (stop that laughing) is that a credible story to use against anyone. It’s so weak and unsubstantiated that no serious journalist should base any story on it. Not until he or she gets further details or substantiation.

Moreover, we have the author – Joe McGinniss – stating the following about the alleged matter (this from an interview that he had with Lloyd Grove of The Daily Beast):

“McGinniss speculates [!!] that they [Palin and Rice] did the deed in a college dorm room in Anchorage or possibly a hotel. But when he actually interviewed the former Miami Heat star, he didn’t directly ask him if they had sex. Instead, McGinniss asked: ‘So you never had the feeling she felt bad about having sex with a black guy?” Rice’s reply: “No, no, no, nothing like that.’

Despite the ambiguity of that response, McGinniss insists, ‘I think it’s pretty clear … That’s certainly the impression I came away with.’

Again, for Mr. Wemple or any other journalist to use that as evidence to bash Palin really tells us more about their ethics than it does about Palin’s.

Why the Post ran that piece is another mystery.

    SteveMG (9e2d69)

  27. EPWJ,

I am honestly surprised you attacked Palin on this particularly execrable claim.

It’s beneath you, and really anyone who isn’t Perez Hilton.

Let’s leave the private and often fabricated stuff out of adult conversations. This attack was completely immoral to present, and also irrational.

In fact, Palin has done plenty to educate women about contraception or the hardship of being a single mother, so your justification is unfair, but that’s beside the point.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  28. Rich

The fact is according to Glenn Rice who really doesnt want to talk about it is that she waned to have sex with him just weeks before she eloped to marry Todd and Todd is pissed.

Is it the reporters fault that Palin had sex with someone that she wasnt in a relationship with?

I mean this is the Clinton defense.

If its true I’m still honestly thinking that there is more to the story – hopefully not as damaging to both Rice and to Gov Palin

    EricPWJohnson (2925ff)

  29. This is the same woman who has falsely accused people of corruption based upon nothing.

They went to prison because they were corrupt.

You are incorrect, and it’s long been apparent you have an axe to grind particularly about the supposed innocence of a few actually corrupt folks. It’s sad to see you take this agenda all the way to the sleaziest lying.

    Is that true?

    Sad sad sad.

Sarah Palin did a lot for the right. She’s not perfect, but a lot of her success is borne of fighting incredibly dishonorable corruption. Many find her mannerisms annoying, or think she’s not substantial enough as a candidate, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t one of the good guys. She is.

And now she’s being smeared, and anyone who takes part says more about themselves than they do Ms Palin.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  38. Then Palin should immediately file an injunction to stop the distribution of the book right?File an injunction to stop the distribution of a book?

I assume you mean a defamation suit?

I must say you’re making grand prounouncements about the ethics of a person based on rumors and allegations made by a critic of that person.

I’d suggest that if that happened to you that you’d be mighty peeved.

Sure, she’s a public figure and this is a blog. But even that requires some level of fairness.

    Or maybe not.

I’m no Palin fan but her critics are sometimes ridiculous.

    SteveMG (9e2d69)

  39. Or was it that she dropped her panties while wearing someone elses promise/engagement ring?

Now he’s just making things up.

Standards that no real living being could match.

Never said that – remember the Duke players for hiring strippers, setting up video feed, organizing an orgy, serving alcohol to minors, collecting large fees attempting to record and broadcast illegal sex acts faced expulsion from the NCAA (which they were) expulsion from Duke – which many were.

I just agreed with Ann Coulter when you lie down with fleas you wake up with subpoenas

Nifong got what he deserved – but since when did the hiring of strippers and having sex with underage drinkers become a legal act in North Carolina? I must have missed that part

She’s pretty quick on the denials – crickets

Todd’s pretty angry – and its usually how it starts the spouse says no way no way then there’s some kind of confirmation, then a looooong period of silence

I hope they work it out

    EricPWJohnson (2925ff)

  42. Why the Post ran that piece is another mystery.

No mystery – the Palin Macaca moment hasn’t shown up yet, so what’s a cheap propaganda rag written by journ-o-lists to do to fulfill it’s duty to the Democratic Party? Publishing the truth about Obama certainly isn’t an option, after all.

    sherlock (99fe47)

  43. But having post saying a confirmed story is no one’s business isnt going to bury this in the realm of squimy but let’s let it go

Personally I could care less, I do feel sorry for her and her family but mostly for the hard working people who forked over their over taxed cash they earned working for reals in her books, posters, quilts, speaking fees, quilts, throw pillows – hoping she was the next salvation that they were looking for and dearly hoping she was

    EricPWJohnson (2925ff)

  44. She’s pretty quick on the denials – crickets

I’ll repeat my question about what you said Rice stated:

“The fact is according to Glenn Rice who really doesnt want to talk about it is that she waned to have sex with him just weeks before she eloped to marry Todd and Todd is pissed.”

    Where has Rice said this?

Does that make me a hypocrite for first voting for Carter and believing that Reagan was better president?

I guess you’re just making fun of EPWJ’s style, since he claims to be a Perry supporter.

Indeed. What adult doesn’t want their kids to avoid their mistakes?

Though even getting to this point of analysis assumes too much good faith on the part of detractors, it does remind me of potheads who don’t forbid their kids from doing drugs because they worry about being inauthentic or hypocritical.

Being an effective leader or parent requires one to get beyond their own ego. If someone can’t note abstinence is the best policy for kids, they are a moral failure. Palin’s view that sex ed should highlight abstinence but also educate on contraception is a mainstream view, and those who think it justifies sleaze are unbelievably narrow minded.

  68. What is the likelihood of the interracial affair being true – very unlikely. During my dating years – the late 70’s / early 1980’s it was extremely taboo to cross racial lines in dating, it did happen but it was rare. Ten years later, it was more common, though still remained very taboo and rare. It was not nearly as common as it is today. In the four instances that I came across interracial dating, there was a common characteristic, the white female was generally unattractive (not ugly, just not attractive). The black male was moving up the social ladder, via dating an otherwise unattractive female. How likley – Not – 1) Palin certainly does not fit the profile. 2) interracial dating was still taboo.

Note – these were my observations – please do not read any racial bias/prejudices into these observations.

Agreed. i never got the argument that the girls were too young for the vaccine. Granted they are too young to consent in sex but… but it is bizarre to argue that the moral position is to say to a girl that young that if she should be raped or merely taken advantage of by a guy from “To Catch a Predator” or whatever, that not only will she have to live with the trauma of the rape (whether it is statutory rape or forcible rape), but as a bonus she has to be exposed to a disease that could kill her, too.

i mean imagine if we had a vaccine against AIDS. Certainly, you would say, babies would not need that vaccine, right?

But in africa there are men with AIDS sick enough to have raped babies on the theory that sex with a virgin will cure them. I mean sorry to gross you out, but its important to remember how depraved the human species can be. So yes, if we had an AIDS vaccine we should absolutely be giving it to children, from birth, with the appropriate sense of sadness that such a thing is necessary.

    Comment by daleyrocks — 9/19/2011 @ 10:47 am

I can’t tell you why because that’s really not accurate.

The idea girls are approved to be sexually promiscuous because their risk of cervical cancer is drastically refused is pretty insane.

I think you’re way off base claiming the reason for this vaccine was anything other than reducing cancer rates.

There are good arguments why the government shouldn’t make that choice and there are good arguments for why it should. That one way to get cancer happens to be sexual has nothing to do with this vaccine.

Unless you’re telling me you honestly think Perry wouldn’t have mandated this vaccine if HPV were communicated by coughing.

No, the sex aspect is not a factor for Gardasil proponents. Only the opponents care about that aspect.

But I can tell you why some people think cancer is bad. Do I need to?

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  83. Aaron, that’s an interesting point.

It’s worth noting that the HPV vaccine appears to be as safe as a placebo injection (much to the chagrin of Perry’s opponents, who claim it causes all kinds of things they are lying about).

Personally, I don’t think this issue should be on the government’s agenda, but I don’t think those on the other side are creeps. That’s base.

Anyway, one argument behind vaccines is that they work best if almost everyone takes them, completely eliminating a virus from circulation (note, if boys in Texas weren’t taking the vaccine, I don’t think this would work). Also, one must administer the vaccine before sexual activity, hence the ‘creepy’ young age. It has nothing to do with twelve year olds becoming sexually active, and frankly that’s a pretty sick imagination that started suggesting this (years and years ago, as this is an issue I was tired of long before I had any idea Perry was running for anything but Governor).

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  84. Aaron -the best argument that the girls are “too young for the vaccine” is a medical one, and actually a reasonable one, having nothing to do with encouragement of promiscuity. It’s long term effectiveness is still in question, and may require boosters. The vaccine given too early would expose to risks of adverse events from the vaccine with no benefit to most individuals and little to know public health benefit or improvement in morbidity/mortality related to cervical cancer.

If given to ten year olds with dropping levels of protection – if the vaccine doesn’t last more than 15 years you get all of the negatives with little of the benefit.

the fact she is a public figure makes it very hard for her to win the case, as a matter of law, even if it is false.

which does suggest to me a simple legal reform might be of value. A two part verdict. The first is a ruling on whether the claim is true or false, and the second is on whether the defamation was malicious. There would be no damages connected to the first, but it would make it clear to the world in such public figure defamation case, that just because they didn’t get damages, doesn’t mean it is not true.

I believe the complaint is simply that they don’t know how long the vaccine lasts.

They could just get another (a booster) when needed, as with many other vaccines (tetanus, for example).

I’m not expert on the science of this one, but I do know Gardasil is similar in effect to a placebo, but especially at the time Perry signed the EO, they did not know how long it lasts. Some still think it provides lifelong protection.

It also doesn’t protect against all strains of HPV, but if everyone took Gardasil, cervical cancer would be reduced by 70%, anal cancer by 60%, most penile cancer too. Also 30% of squamos carcinoma of the head or neck.

It’s a major deal to be able to eradicate the cancer, and I think boys and girls should take the vaccine.

But the government doing so is a nanny. Why the nanny wants to rid us of a lot of cancer is obvious, but whether we want the nanny is an entirely different matter.

Onerous? It’s as easy as using the internet.

I don’t speak for all parents on either side of the debate and neither do you.

Actually, I do, insofar as sex is obviously not an aspect of the motivation to vaccinate against cancer. It takes no place in the logic behind vaccine proponents, because they would also want the vaccine if the virus was transmitted in a different way. That’s obvious.

No one is giving their kids Gardasil as “the government needle of sex.”

That’s got nothing to do with it. Kids are still at risk of all sorts of STDs, and no one, and I mean actually zero people, thought otherwise.

Rick Perry think[s] the sex lives of our teenage girls should involve the government through a mandate process

No he doesn’t. He did, however, think he should play nanny on a cancer vaccine. He didn’t, for a second, suggest this encourages sex for minors. That is crazy. He had no intention of changing anyone’s sex life, at least in that direction.

For the cancer vaccine to work, you have to be vaccinated before sexual activity, hence an age before practically anyone is having sex. The only side of the argument that is concerned with sexuality are those opposed to the vaccine, simply because theirs are the only arguments that could possibly depend on that aspect.

  113. Also, just to note, if a young adult has sex with someone who has HPV, they are 60% likely to contract the highly contagious virus. Or 0% if they have been vaccinated by Gardasil or Cervarix (at least for the time being, before whatever potential lapse in effectiveness has occurred.)

12,000 women get cervical cancer each year because they were not immunized in time. Some abstained until marriage. About 4,000 people, most women but many men, get anal cancer for the same reason.

The vaccine is said to be most effective at ages 11 and 12 in women, and from 9 to 26 for men.

Condoms do not adequately protect against HPV.

About half of Americans will contract HPV at some point.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  114. Oh, and I say that so people will choose to get their kids vaccinated. I don’t like a government that does this for me. Perry was very mistaken to let his strong desire to reduce cancer lead to mandating this vaccine.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  115. Even in an alternative universe in which Palin had supported abstinence-only education, I have never understood how people imagine Bristol’s pregnancy would make that incongruous. On the contrary, were Palin really an anti-sex-ed campaigner, her daughter’s pregnancy would be the perfect argument for her campaign. She could say “look what happens when you teach children to play with matches; I shouted, I begged, I did everything I could to prevent my daughter from being taught these things, the school didn’t listen, and sure enough she burned the house down, exactly as I feared and warned would happen.”

I think these critics somehow have the idea that parents control what their children are taught, and that if someone advocates a particular educational policy then their children must have had the benefit of that policy. But the whole point of the campaigns on this issue is that parents don’t have any say in what the public schools teach, so they have to resort to the political arena to try to achieve their goal.

Of course in this universe Palin has never been against teaching sensible non-explicit lessons about contraception, any more than she’s been against teaching about evolution (another story made up out of whole cloth during the 2008 campaign).

    Meh.

Texas is a, if not the, leader on jobs in this country. Anyone claiming otherwise is just crazy.

Texas is conservatism. Limited government, most of the time, and spending cuts constantly. Balanced budgets, even in hard times.

Not just on paper. Not projections. Real balanced budgets. (In MA, Romney claimed to have a surplus, but it was on paper… the budget had a big gap, and the tax increases and spending increases turned into a huge problem after the economy cooled).

Texas’s policies are not magical. For one thing, a lot of people are fleeing states like MA and CA to come to Texas for jobs.

Which is a very good thing, as there are so many jobs being created here, that we do need a steady supply of people fleeing the mistaken tax and spend policies of blue states were Perry would be unelectable.

But compare apples to apples. If you do control for the flood of folks coming to Texas, the idea there’s a damper on employment in Texas is dishonest. There’s no other word for it.

the problem with all unemployment numbers is that they are not the same as “jobless.”

For instance, alot of people have moved to texas seeking jobs, pushing that number upward.

My pet peeve above all others is intellectual dishonesty, and Palin-haters are so thoroughly bloated with it, they would be declared lost causes by the producers of The Biggest Loser. And yet, they ARE losers.

Upcoming on my blog is a thread about my Twitter exchanges with one particularly odious Sarahphobe. This woman joined in as a party to a frivolous suit retroactively complaining that as Governor of Alaska, the office failed in 2007 to issue a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth, the now-obscure June 19th observance of the day in 1865 when the last American slaves were informed that two-and-a-half years earlier, the Thirteenth Amendment had been ratified. The suit itself was filed by a man who alleged that long before, a year after the reported Rice liaison, the then-single Sarah Heath suddenly resisted his amorous advances because — get this — she didn’t realize he was black until he told her he was.

Nobody who has ever seen Glen Rice has mistaken him for anything but black. If you doubt that, click here (Rated PG-13). When I tweeted the hatetress and told her a Glen Rice “hookup” shot the idea Palin was a racist to hell, her response was typical foaming idiocy.

The first is a ruling on whether the claim is true or false, and the second is on whether the defamation was malicious. There would be no damages connected to the first, but it would make it clear to the world in such public figure defamation case, that just because they didn’t get damages, doesn’t mean it is not true.

Um, don’t we already have that? The jury has to report on all three elements. In Sharon v Time the jury decided that the story was both false and defamatory, but that it was not proven that Time knew or should have known it was false; so Sharon lost his case, but won a moral victory which helped him win damages in his Israeli suit.

    d. in c. (0b8a2b)

  170. It’s a major deal to be able to eradicate the cancer, and I think boys and girls should take the vaccine. But the government doing so is a nanny. Why the nanny wants to rid us of a lot of cancer is obvious, but whether we want the nanny is an entirely different matter.

But this was not government qua government, but government qua owner and operator of the public school system. I don’t think public schools should exist, but so long as they do the government has to make the same sort of policy decisions that every private school does, and that includes what vaccinations should be required as a condition of admission. Deciding to require girls entering public high school to have Gardasil injections is no more or less “nannyish” than setting nutritional standards for public school lunches, or setting dress codes. And most of these decisions are routinely taken by the executive branch, not by the legislature.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

Sure. Hence Santorum’s argument that some of this stuff is acceptable and some isn’t.

I disagree on your distinction. If the school is serving lunch, they should serve a decent one. And I think diseases spread via normal school contacts should be vaccinated against to a reasonable degree as well.

But the Gardasil vaccination is more like banning cigarettes. I understand the motivation. I would do the same to those in my care. But I the government has to have limits, even when the emotional appeal is very strong.

    Comment by Aaron Worthing — 9/19/2011 @ 11:31 am

You know why Maher & Creepy Keith won’t touch it? Because it doesn’t fit the narrative that she hates minorities in general and blacks in particular. Remember that bull/horse/chicken that was being slung by Olbermann about her 2008 campaign appearances being reminiscent of the gathering of lynch mobs?

In 1992, Bill Clinton was a well-known philanderer when he ran on his record against GHWB, and unlike Palin, the existence of his extramarital affair was recorded on tape (remember Gennifer Flowers? If not, educate yourself). And of the alleged cocaine use? If you choose to believe ALL the rumors about the last three Presidents, they’ve ALL snorted coke — Clinton, GWB, and Obama. That ship has sailed. If it was a disqualifying event, Obama — the first one to go on record admitting it — wouldn’t being fouling the Oval Office now.

What all of this says to me as someone who admires Palin (but doesn’t think she should be elected in 2012) is that after all the rumors and whispers that there were facts buried in the Alaskan permafrost that once unearthed would render her a national pariah, this is all they’ve got; overblown, manufactured outrage they are praying will estrange her from her supposedly racist fan base.

I could say the same for any Christian who endorses Perry. I don’t think that’s fair.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  180. I am still unconvinced of either the efficacy or safety of the vaccine. The way it was rushed to distribution, marketed, and how disputes are shouted down has me skeptical. We don’t know the long-term effects and the claims of protection are not warranted by the available data. The fact they can’t be proven (not enough time has passed) should be a big red flag on all the other claims related to it.

I have recommended to an extended family member that she not get this vaccine yet. I would certainly not give consent for my daughters to get it. The claims made are premature IMO.

    Stashiu3 (601b7d)

  181. I don’t put a lot of stock in that Gallup poll this early, but one aspect stuck out: “In the poll, 53% say they would prefer the nominee with the best chance of beating Obama”

This is why Romney lost a ton of support when Perry entered the race. Many who were familiar enough with Perry to know he’s probably electable too, but also good on economic issues, jumped. Romney has a lot of supporters who are deeply pragmatic and motivated primarily towards beating Obama. Right now, Romney is among the most familiar electable candidates because he was the guy we all regret not nominating in 2008 (myself included).

    That’s how the GOP works.

As they come to be familiar with candidates like Cain and Bachmann and Gingrich, they might like some of what they see, but stick to Romney for his electability. Some of those folks will become familiar with Perry and realize he is actually electable too, and they can pick which of the two better reflects their politics.

I think Romney’s electability argument is fundamentally weak, because he’s not the only person who can beat Obama these days.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  182. You would be right but I know a lot of christians who vote for him because they think he would be better than Obama.

I disagree at least on the negative reactions aspect. A lot of people have had the vaccine. More than would be needed to detect even a minor side effect. That the vaccination might wear off is a different matter.

But folks should be able to make this determination for their own families. There are too many issues like this that we’re not going to be able to agree on.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  185. Dustin… I understand Rick Perry is your Personal Jesus, but the man really needs to voice some substantive plans/proposals and not just rely on his Texas Miracle, which, in terms of the state of this nation, is just a few shades better than a ShamWow! pitch.

    ColonelHaiku (601b0d)

  186. LOL.

I don’t really adore Perry, I just get bent out of shape whenever there’s another prominent Republican, because every damn time they are attacked from 100 directions.

It always gets on my nerves.

You’re certainly right that Perry has to (and obviously will) provide a full agenda.

I just have that decade+ of how he governs, and that’s a bigger deal to me than just talk. It’s going to take a lot to change my mind on which camp I’m in. Someone can promise to govern 100% as I want, but if I don’t trust them, it doesn’t influence me (in fact, this is exactly what happened with Christine O’Donnell).

Talk is cheap. You’re justified in demanding that agenda, but talk is cheap.

I guess we just disagree on that, but I’m definitely not an expert on vaccines.

30,000 people were in trials to determine the safety of the vaccine that has been in use for eight years without a known problem aside from the needles themselves.

35 million doses have been administered so far. 68 deaths (statistically, this is what you’d get for that number of people, suggesting the vaccine doesn’t kill). The deaths do not have any unusual pattern to suggest anything. 19,000 reported adverse side affects. The vast majority being that needles lead to fainting or pain, and the suggested response is to watch the patient for 15 minutes, because fainting can cause a head injury.

When his own inability to do something as rather easy and painless as buying and driving a less fuel-hogging vehicle along the lines of, say, a compact BMV was raised by some pundits, Obama’s spokesman had the gall to say the SUV in question actually was somehow enviro-friendly when it wasn’t.

The hypocrisy of limousine liberalism is far more pervasive and pathetic than traditional socio-cultural hypocrisy — or hypocrisy associated with traditional morality and religion — if only because the idealism and phoniness of leftists often runs counter to government initiatives and legislative restrictions.

Another example — which makes me snicker to no end — is one of the long-time heroes of the Democrat Party and liberalism — Franklin D Roosevelt — in the 1930s berating the well-to-do for avoiding higher taxes, and then his having the nerve to claim the higher taxes he himself had supported and signed into law did not apply to his own sizable income.

  227. Government run schools should be run properly, such that they aren’t harmful to the students. Vaccinating against normally spread disease, nutrition in lunch, prohibiting smoking on campus… all that’s logical.

The government banning smoking generally, to protect us, or taxing it, to protect us, is not similar to that.

The problem is that a significant percentage of public school students do have sex with their classmates. The school is at least partially responsible for that, because it throws them together, and without it they might not have met. Any public high school student can be presumed to be at risk for STDs, unless their home environment is unusually strong, and even then there’s no guarantee. Send the same kid to a parochial school, or home school, and his/her chance of getting laid drops considerably, because they’re mixing with a better crowd. So the school shares some of the responsibility for preventing at least some of the harm that can result.

It’s shared by many troubled men which may be why, if you Google “Sarah Palin naked,” you get nearly 6 million hits. The reason for EricPWJohnson’s particular obsession with Palin and her underwear are not possible to diagnose except through individual therapy, but it could have to do with his personal relationships with the opposite sex or a medical condition. Of course, in Bill Clinton’s case it was not hypocrisy, since he was most likely abstaining from sex from Hillary.

What is wrong with someone who has a history of promiscuity saying that abstinence is the way?

Would you listen to Barney Frank about the subject of sex with women?

Agreed. i never got the argument that the girls were too young for the vaccine.

I have studied the issue. HPV is nowhere nearly as lethal as measles, mumps, or rubella- let alone polio or smallpox.

When I went to school, nobody ever had an HPV vaccination. They could not have had one, since it was not yet invented. I do not recall a single student, who had went to the same school I did at the same time, that had ever died from an HPV infection. I never heard of any children dying from an HPV infection.

By contrast, those of us who are old enough to have gone to school before MMR, polio, or smallpox vaccines were mandatory would recall stories of children dying from the diseases those vaccinations were meant to prevent.

So why this sudden campaign to make mandatory a vaccination for a disease with a very low transmission and lethality rate?

That one way to get cancer happens to be sexual has nothing to do with this vaccine.

It has to do with the transmissions rate. Because the transmission rate is so low, it is not justified the way mandates for MMR, polio, and smallpox are/were justified.

when the rumors of Rick Perry being gay are proven true.

All this in-fighting about Palin vs Perry, or Perry vs Romney, or Romney vs Bachmann, etc — goes right over my head, because — per the quip by Ann Coulter to Sean Hannity not too long ago — even if Charlie Sheehan is the candidate running against Obama in 2012, I’ll be voting for Sheehan.

Looks like Republicans with libertarian/liberal socio-cultural instincts — or desperate to smear their opponents no matter what — are out for blood.

Just about any Republican, or person in general, won’t see eye-to-eye on certain issues, so I don’t expect perfection in whichever candidate runs against Obama next year. I just want Jeremiah Wright’s pal out of the White House, period.

    businessinsider.com, August 2011:

A supporter of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has taken out an ad seeking anyone who has had sex with Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The ad, which ran in this week’s edition of the Austin Chronicle, asks: “Are you a stripper, an escort, or just a ‘young hottie’ impressed by an arrogant, entitled governor of Texas?”

The advertisement, which comes just a few days after Perry announced his presidential candidacy, was paid for by Robert Morrow, an Austin-based Paul supporter and three-time delegate to the Texas state Republican convention.

Rumors about Perry’s sexual orientation and alleged adultery have been circulating in Austin for several years, although there is absolutely no evidence that he has had extramarital affairs. The original source of the rumors are not clear.

Perry, who has been married to his former high-school sweetheart Anita since 1982. He told the Austin American-Statesman in 2004 that the rumors were part of a “smear campaign” and “are not correct in any shape, form or fashion. These are irresponsible. They’re salacious.”

Morrow, who claims to know several strippers and escorts in Austin who have stories about the Texas governor, has been circulating articles online and sending essays to reporters (including this one) about Perry’s alleged behavior. He said he has also heard from men who have substantiated rumors that the governor has relationships with gay men. Austin’s gay community, Morrow added, is angry about Perry’s “hypocritical” association with anti-homosexual evangelical leaders who organized Perry’s “The Response” prayer rally earlier this month.

Rollingstone.com, Sept 2011: In 2008, even as candidate Barack Obama was committing to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Perry was writing a book in which he suggested that the military’s tortured stance on homosexuality ought to be a model for American society.

The book, On My Honor, is a (tedious) history of the Boy Scouts and the legal challenges the organization has faced — in particular from “the radical homosexual movement” that Perry rails against for trying to “throw their sexual activity into the face of society.”

I’d vote for a gay or bisexual politician who was truly (emphasizing “truly”) socially and economically conservative than a straight dude who thinks and acts like, say, John Kerry, Al Gore or President “Goddamn America.”

I like this forum because it makes me do some homework about various people and issues. Perry has just become more down-to-earth and admirable in my eyes.

It’s not like Romney fans are actually rejecting Perry for flip flopping on the issue Romney actually flip flopped on. They just hope to make Perry unelectable via scaring the hell out of people to think Perry will abolish SS, and if he doesn’t, they pretend that’s a walk back rather than another embarrassment for the Romney camp.

We really can do better than that. Romney’s agenda is very good these days. It happens to mirror, in most respects, Perry’s actual record. I know Romney’s been running for president for an awful long time, but the fact is we’ve got two guys selling a similar agenda, and only one of them actually governed that way.

All the riff raff issues one can create won’t change it. It is good, anyway, as Perry has to continue to show he can overcome that crap. It’s ultimately healthy, if a bit embarrasing.

The GOP has to be made to understand that Obama MUST be defeated, n’importe quoi, the future of the republic is at stake. So it’s time to stop the peckingfest, stat.

Therefore certain grim men in the smoke-filled room need to have That Talk with Bachmann, Paul, Gingrich, and Cain. (Huntsman wouldn’t even understand the conversation.)

It’s over, pull out, stop the attacks and Get Onside. Unless Christie or Ryan jumps in at the last second or Thad McCotter finds a way to make a splash (I like the guy but it seems unlikely) then it’s either Perry/Romney or Romney/Perry. They need to join forces, choreograph their good cop bad cop routine, and telegraph to the public with a wink that it doesn’t really matter which one they pick, the important thing is that the whole team is playing AS a team, and Obama is headed out the door.

I don’t get what’s up with this divisive squawking. Eyes on the prize, people.

    DohBiden (d54602)

  361. d in c, I don’t see why Perry would want Romney to be his VP or what that brings to the ticket.

He’s next in line, because he ran in 2008, but he is a tax and spend liberal.

I agree the point here is to beat Obama, but it’s certainly better to do that with a good ticket.

The divisive squawking is a good thing. It’s healthy for Haiku to bash Perry and for me to bash Romney. The nominee we pick has to be able to withstand this if he’s to have any chance of weathering what the left will have in store.

I know a lot of people see the VP role as a consolation prize to reunify the party, but I don’t think most Romney supporters need Romney. They just want to win the election, and will vote for Perry (just as I’d vote for Romney if it came down do it, which it probably won’t).

We’ve got plenty of time. No need to announce to the democrats who our nominee is this early. This election is primarily about Obama, and they don’t need a head start changing the subject.

I can’t just shut down my patriotism here. I want this country to have a leader who isn’t shamelessly changing his opinions and views depending on what works for him.

  368. From: Joe McGinniss
    To: Jesse Griffin
    Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2011 6:15 PM
Subject: I have to ask you for help

    Jesse–

Legal review of my manuscript is underway and here’s my problem: no one has ever offered documentation of any of the lurid stories about the Palins. Shailey Tripp is the latest example.

APD and Sarah have denied that Todd had any involvement with her. To my knowledge, no one has provided any evidence that he did. TheEnquirer cites AlaskaWTF, which in turn cites the Enquirer: what good is that? I’m also told that the Enquirer is preparing to back off this story and save face by denouncing Ms. Tripp as an unreliable source who promised documentation she couldn’t provide.

She may be mentally unstable and prone to fabrication, delusion, or both. Her joint may be called Blue Hands Massage (brrrrr!), but she’s no Monica Lewinsky with a blue dress with a semen stain, that’s for sure.

Do you believe that Todd paid her for sex? If so, why do you believe that, other than that you wish it were true?

A lurid, sensational, defamatory story about Todd, based only on the account of a woman charged with prostitution, who is no doubt desperate for money, and who sold her story to the Enquirer, is a gift from heaven for Sarah.

Jesse, you can ridicule Sarah for calling in to the execrable Bob & Mark, but the fact is that as far as this story goes, there’s no there there. And rumors about what might come in weeks ahead are not facts. In fact, they’re garbage.

I’ve neither seen nor heard anything that indicates that Ms. Tripp’s story has any basis in fact. None of the endless crap Patrick posted about her before getting the boot from palingates.com offers any substantiation.

And even you write frequently that you know things you can’t yet post, but that soon “all will be revealed.” This has been going on since I first became aware of your blog, but as far as I know you haven’t substantiated a single claim or provided verification for a single rumor that you’ve posted about Sarah’s personal life, or the personal lives of any Palin family members. Thus, she gets to denounce what she calls “lies.”

Neither from you, the Enquirer, AlaskaWTF, palingates.com or anyone else, have I seen a credible, identified source backing any of the salacious stories about the Palin family.

Thus–as Random House lawyers are already pointing out to me–nothing I can cite other than my own reporting rises above the level of tawdry gossip. The proof is always just around the corner, but that’s a corner nobody has been able to turn. Maybe Jeff Dunn has, in which case I’ll be the first to congratulate him. But frankly, at this point, I’m tired of it, and I’ve run out of time.

No one has ever provided factual evidence that:

    a) Todd had sex with a hooker, or with anyone else outside his marriage.

    b) Sarah had an affair with Brad Hanson, or anyone else.

    c) Track was a druggie who enlisted in the army to avoid a jail term. Or that he vandalized Wasilla school buses.

    d) Willow was involved in the vandalism of the empty house in Meadow Lakes. Or that Sarah rushed back from Hawaii to put the lid on that.

    e) Trig is not Sarah’s natural born child.

    f) Bristol was promiscuous as a high schooler and drank and used drugs, or became pregnant again after Tripp’s birth.

Jesse, you were going on and on about Bristol being pregnant while doing Dancing With The Stars. And, if I recall correctly, at the time of her brief glossy-magazine-payday “reunion” with Levi, you surmised that she was pregnant by Ben Barber, or at least by someone who wasn’t Levi. You’ve recently suggested she’s had an abortion, publishing photographs that show her chubby then and thin now. But doesn’t that seem a little “thin” to you, based on nothing besides magazine pictures?

So much has bubbled at the salacious rumor stage for more than two years, but no one has been able to take even one story further.

Jesse, if you can put me in touch with people who are willing and able to substantiate any of the above, now is the time to do so. Otherwise, I hope you won’t complain that there are no startling new revelations in my book. My publisher and I think it’s damning enough without airing the family’s dirty laundry, but because Sarah’s hypocrisy about her family is one of the things that galls me most, I’d like to be able to publish facts in regard to a) through f) above, but I emphasize facts.

Not malicious speculation or third-hand rumors relayed by those who hold a grudge.

For any or all of those who’ve told you they’ll speak out, but not yet, now is the time. My book represents the last best chance to put the truth about Sarah in front of the American people in a documented, verifiable way. But I need facts that I can rely on. I didn’t live this long and work this hard over so many decades to wind up as AlaskaWTF between hard covers.

as always, and looking forward to seeing you in spring or summer,

    Link

Joe knew he was lying. Eric knew it too.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  369. Yep, hoax. And an actionable one. Palin’s got an interesting decision to make regarding a defamation suit. Since we see “malice” in the above.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  370. The guy actually notes his source is prone to fabrication. He actually calls this stuff malicious speculation.

SPQR, Palin has a tough decision, as with much evil in our media, suing Joe will actually help him in some ways.

I think she should sue anyway. I also think she should sue Eric Johnson. No kidding.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  371. Dustin

She should sue, if it isnt true – I said that early in my comments also Glenn Rice isnt helping with his comments

There are literally thousands of rumors about the women, many spread by the actions and the Palins themselves.

But I’m not the one spreading the rumors – just commentating on the public conversation of them

In her lawsuit though – she’s going to have to disclose that they aren’t true though

    thats another problem

    EricPWJohnson (719277)

  372. If she does not sue, it proves the lies are true.

    JD (0b8a2b)

  373. You know whats funny is when I said she should have sued the cretin Levy johnson and everybody here thought I was an idiot

I still think she should sue the jackass

    ian cormac (ed5f69)

  375. Bla bla bla, Eric. I hope you face justice, but I realize you are just one of many ankle biting malicious psychos on the internet. Palin can’t possibly sue them all.

Your behavior is partially borne of your apparent mental problems and perversion, but mostly it’s because you have a political beef with Palin’s agenda, and you think that justifies smearing her.

You don’t like fairness and justice. You are a intolerant of political reform. Simple as that.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  376. She should sue, if it isnt true

    And this is stupid.

Everyone can see now that it isn’t true. Just read the email from Joe himself. It’s “malicious speculation” from a “fabricator” with no “evidence”.

    You lose, Eric.

Interesting that he was here within minutes. It’s like he’s got nothing in his life other than spamming lies about Sarah Palin.

The National Enquirer claims that friends close to the politician and her husband

That’s the source in Eric’s link. That’s all he’s got. After it’s proven there is no evidence and there are people fabricating claims, that’s all he’s got.

And apparently Palin has to sue these unnamed friends, or somehow that’s evidence against her?

That Palin is opposed by Eric is a powerful reason to support Sarah Palin, which you can do by buying one of her books or contributing to her PAC.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  383. Oh, and Eric is now saying there are dozens of other stories that can ‘top this one’, but of course, those don’t have any evidence either.

Of course the liars can tell a dozen worse lies if this one doesn’t work.

Eric actually thinks this helps his case?

    What a psycho pervert.

I really just want someone who will get spending under control and tell the truth.

Reject Romney because he did not get spending under control, even in the easy boom years of his failed governorship, while grabbing guns from law abiding citizens and mandating health insurance to people who didn’t want to buy that. Or because his flip flops betray a lack of good faith.
