AttackWatch!

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:11 pm

Report subversive criticism of Our Leader here.

If you’re so inclined, maybe consider dropping a note to our friends at the IRS as well. After all, those who irresponsibly criticize the President may well be tax cheats too. Can’t hurt to make sure!

Thanks to S.J., who gets reported for telling me about it.

  1. The hashtag #AttackWatch has been so entertaining, I almost forgot to leave for the elementary school pick up line.

    Thanks Obama.

What is this world coming to, when your breakfast is subversive??

    It went:

You know on TV how every large family has that ONE exceedingly normal person?

We need to get one of those

Are you suggesting that the Secretary of the Treasry might have criticized the President?

Uh oh. I better go report myself for even thinking of that. Crimethink is doubleplusungood.

  10. #AttackWatch Trending on Twitter — But Not in A Good Way

“But an early social-media backlash against the project may not have been the sort of online buzz the president’s campaign was hoping for.

#AttackWatch is now a Trending Topic in the Washington, D.C. area — but not for the reasons its creators had hoped.

Tea partiers, or at least people who share sympathies with them, have used #attackwatch to joke — and at times, vent — about their dissatisfaction with the Obama administration.
A separate group has turned #AttackWatch into a punchline for mundane observations and funny non-sequiturs, using it to “report” everything from rude neighbors to NFL teams.

Few if any have actually used #AttackWatch so far in the way the Obama campaign intended.

Right-wing pundits took a particular glee in appropriating the hashtag, with Jonah Goldberg, Michelle Malkin, and Tim Carney firing off sarcastic tweets by the minute. “Some RWNJ [Right Wing Nut Job] said Obama set up a website to track all criticism of him. But I know you’re not that creepy,” tweeted Carney.
Even nonpartisan novelty accounts jumped on the bandwagon: @depresseddarth, a Twitter feed imagining the Star Wars villain Darth Vader on Xanax, tweeted that “Obama launched a program to track attack threats. We had a similar program on the Death Star, but that didn’t stop Luke.”
The Obama team has been heralded for its revolutionary use of Twitter in conducting voter and constituent outreach. But by going on offense with #AttackWatch, Obama — carrying a 33 percent approval rating according to a Bloomberg poll released today — inadvertently gave the public a campaign-approved outlet to mock him in 140 characters or less.”

  18. I just got an email from Obama’s campaign (the sender is “Barack Obama”) with the subject line saying “Sometime soon, can we meet for dinner?”.

It turns out to be some kind of raffle, but I found the tone very odd. There was really no policy in the email, just appeals to people on a personal level, like Obama is the cool popular kid inviting me to sit at the cool table.

Today Obama also told a cheering crowd

If You Love Me, You Gotta Help Me Pass This Bill

He appears to be dropping the idea of results entirely. It’s a weird play for people who think Obama is especially entitled. I think that’s the idea behind a ridiculously dramatic website that acts as though criticizing the President is a terrible thing.

    What’s your point?

And are you pretending flag@whitehouse.gov wasn’t a government URL too?

This is really creepy behavior. I can’t imagine Bush establishing a website in 2003 asking people to rat out dissenting views.

It’s also completely unnecessary. Effective messages are not hidden from the public, and Obama’s campaign already knows about them without enlisting brownshirts to get in on the action.

This is about sending a message that the best aspects of democracy are wrong when they hurt the entitled man child.

    Nothing official.

It’s like President Bush writing me and saying ‘hey, wanna back massage? See you soon -George”

Just really strange. I’m used to political emails having some kind of… political argument. The only thing he said about his opponents is that they won’t invite their supporters to dinner. Seriously.

Dustin, thanks for the link. Keeps getting sillier and funnier as it goes. Still can’t stop laughing.

I have it bookmarked so the next time my mom (who was Republican before Obama convinced her she was a racist if she didn’t support him 100%) sends me a You Tube video mocking Republicans. 54. I did my duty yesterday as a tattletale citizen and warned them of possible racism. I also followed up today:

I wanted to let you know that the Jewish man who I thought was being racist against Obama was still around Borough Park today. You obviously did not catch him. He was wearing the same outfit—black pants, black shoes and a white shirt and black hat. And he still has that long beard.

Today he said something that proves he is racist. He kept yelling:” The chickens have come home to roost.” As if…

Yesterday I wasn’t 100% certain that the Jewish man was racist but now after this…come on. We all know he is mocking President Obama’s minister, the Reverend Wright. And he’s an African American so that’s that.

Please try to round him up as I suspect this will not end. Today he was at the corner of 14th Avenue and 46th street. Yesterday he was a block away at 45th street.

Tomorrow or Friday will be good days to catch this Jewish man as he WILL NOT be around on Saturday…for obvious reasons.

Yesterday I thought what he was doing might fall under the pull down menu category of robocalling but I am not so sure. I am going to select Public Statement as he sure was making it public today.

Good luck. BTW, there is a reward for this, right?

    PC14 (4a4ed3)

  55. Really?

While the volume of conservative critiques speaks to the intensity of the opposition’s feelings towards the Obama administration, at the very least this digital effort did it’s job bit perhaps instilling a little fear in the GOP campaign efforts. It’s not difficult to imagine social media staffers at the RNC scratching their heads and saying “why didn’t we think of that?”

The essence of AttackWatch is the Obama campaign outsourcing of opposition media research to its army of loyal supporters. Among the critiques leveled at this interactive effort is the notion that this is some vestige of “Big Brother” keeping an eye on citizens opposed to the White House politics. This would be a fairer analysis if it were made before the advent of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. In the brave new world that is oppo research and political smear campaigns, leveraging the passion of one’s political base is not something that we should fear, but rather a smart and savvy political move.

  59. . It’s not difficult to imagine social media staffers at the RNC scratching their heads and saying “why didn’t we think of that?”

I’m sure that’s exactly what they’d say if Bush was begging his worshipful supporters to report dissent. That’s so presidential. Nothing creepy at all.

Though I agree there’s nothing to be scared of, they are burning a strawman there. The right is obviously not actually intimidated by this. They are justifiably mocking the fear the left appears to have for dissent. AKA ‘smears’.

The only link I bothered to read there was whining that Perry smeared Obama because he said Obama didn’t create any jobs because… we have fewer jobs as a country than when Obama took office. Because Obama ‘saved’ jobs.

It’s pure defense. Who is supposedly afraid here?

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  60. I think that the idea is to make it *appear* the R’s are afraid. And why would we “appear” afraid? Because in reality, we’ve been vile racists, obstructionists, terrorists, etc, of course!

But, if we’re just mocking and laughing at the absurdity of it, then we become resistant and no longer susceptible to such targeting and that won’t work to the Dem’s advantage, so we need to be made to *appear* fearful…

Imagine Bush saying ‘If you love me, you’ll pass that AUMF’. Or this ‘tell me what Kerry’s campaign is saying about me’ or ‘how would you like to have dinner with me, yours truly, George.’

Obama’s pathetic. There’s no better word for him. Robert Stacy Mccain is calling it the SCOAMF factor, which is also a good way to put it.

why would we “appear” afraid? Because in reality, we’ve been vile racists, obstructionists, terrorists, etc, of course!

At a certain point in time when POTUS was still parting the seas or walking on water or whatever miraculous thing he was purported to be doing, accusations you refer to as the silliest things, stuck. But because there is now an increasing across-the-aisle disenchantment with him, the silliest things are having less of the stick-effect and instead are more clearly seen for what they really are.

When the left is seeing its own hypocrisy (and making it public), you know the stick effect has lost its impact.
