Open Thread: President Downgrade Proposes That We Go Deeper Into Debt

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 4:22 pm

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

I mean, what else is there to say about this? Right now he is telling us is how apparently shovel-ready the jobs are and how it will just work a million miracles.

Yeah, they were shovel-ready last time, but we didn’t like the smell of what he was shoveling.

  1. And Barrack, get off my lawn.

    Aaron Worthing (73a7ea)

  2. Obama

“i will propose a more aggressive deficit.” yes, a complete quote. You might call that him misspeaking, but i call it a Freudian slip.

    Aaron Worthing (73a7ea)

  3. I’m watching this guy now, and can’t escape the feeling that this is the least effective, most overmatched and inept president of all time. Clueless. A pitchman with no relevant life experience. A man whose core values are antithetical to everything that made America great. He is an embarrasment and a disgrace.

    Kevin Stafford (abdb87)

  4. The American Jobs Act. How can the Republicans be against a bill with a name like that?

    AZ Bob (7d2a2c)

  5. AZ Bob

The next law he is proposing is called the Puppies and Ice Cream Act.

    Aaron Worthing (73a7ea)

  6. And, then, we’re going to California and Arizona, and to Colorado and New Mexico, and to Maine and Michigan, Yeeeeehaawaaa!

    ropelight (30c312)

  7. And the next law after that is called the repubs wanna throw granny out on the street act which makes it illegal to be a conservative republican.

  8. Cue up the false choices!

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  9. he wants to redistribute a half trillion dollars in the run-up to the election?

    For reals?

No wonder his mom and dad didn’t want anything to do with him – he’s a dick.

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  10. He does not propose we go deeper into Debt. What he proposes is we spend $50 billion on X and we fund it by re-arranging the existing budget.

In essence, he is admitting the current budget needs to be improved on by re-directing existing spending levels.

… but more taxes and more spending too!

    this douchebag needs a timeout

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  15. He is admitting we need more spending cuts — roughly 450billion — but to be cynical mostly in the OUT YEARS in order to fund spending in the CURRENT YEARS.

Gotta win an election ya know!

This is why I hate 10 year budgeting. Cutting 1 billion in years 6-10 count as much as cutting 1 billion now.

Unfortunately, 1) Time Value of Money, and 2) Congress can change its mind in the future on those reductions but it can’t undo past spending.

    Anyway.

  24. Shovel-ready is only good for garbage.

I am a highway engineer. It takes years to plan and get environmental clearance for a major project. It’s not as though states can spend the money to design huge projects hoping the feds will pay for their construction. The last stimulus went for maintenance jobs that were already funded, that is the 2% or so that actually went for infrastructure.

  32. I can see this bill passing … right after a “balanced budget” amendment to the US Constitution and the invention of “energy so cheap that we won’t meter it.”

    A. Weiner (d1c681)

  33. The brazenness with which Obama lies is almost breathtaking. Even Bill Clinton would hesitate to tell such obvious falsehoods that Obama passes without a qualm.

But the American people already reject this idea of wasteful spending of the sort that’s already failed. It is obvious to the dumbest that Obama is throwing out a sham proposal to try to blame his failures on the GOP.

  34. Did the GOP really pass on reserving time for a rebuttal? If so, its brilliant.

GOP response to the Obama Faux Simulus II – Electric Boogaloo? “Meh.”

    SPQR (26be8b)

  35. Maybe the GOP should just pass exactly what he asks for except with a clause that has the bill sunset when a new president is sworn in?

That would call his bluff but he wouldn’t dare veto it.

    ColonelHaiku (c7aeaa)

  36. SPQR – that was an object lesson in all of his sophomoric rhetorical devices. False choices. Bastardization of opponent’s actual positions. Outright lies. Trying to make himself outside the fray.

Hey Barry bud, this buds Barry’s for you!

    FTFY!

Another Drew - Restore the Republic / Obama Sucks! (eb769c)

  62. the important thing to remember is he wouldn’t have made such an ass of himself with his douchey speech if he had any particular reason to think that the economy was going to get better over the next year

    No.

Bumble thinks things are gonna get worse.

The next president is gonna inherit bumble’s dirty diapers and I feel bad for Mr. Governor Perry cause he’s gonna have to swim in it.

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  63. Obama knows his plan won’t go through but he can hit the Republicans over the head as the “Party of No” when they object.

Of course, we need to remind Brian Williams and the media that Obama had two years of control over Congress.

But hey, he had to spend a lot of the money on his liberal pet projects. Now that we are still not out of the recession, Obama is saying he is now going to be serious about fixing things.

He burned a lot of rubber in his new car and it is now out of gas.

    AZ Bob (aa856e)

  64. All he is going to do is claim that everything would have worked out if Congress had just bent over and grabbed it’s ankles every time Teh One wanted something, and since they did not, it is their fault.

    JD (318f81)

  65. Hey and it’s all paid for. He’s going to pay for all of this stuff by cutting payments for Medicare and Medicaid! Except that that particular raid has never worked because the docs object too much.

    Comanche Voter (0e06a9)

  66. Comanche – don’t forget taxing the piss out of everyone that makes over $200,000, those millionaires and billionaires that he hates.

    JD (318f81)

  67. no you forgot the taxes for the rich goes one way…………..our way.

    DohBiden (d54602)

  68. Glad I skipped watching this crap. I read the transcript. I really ask myself if this man can possibly think the same crap he tried 2 1/2 years ago will work again when it clearly didn’t? If so, then he is not nearly as smart as he likes to think he is.

I don’t think he interested in passing any legislation honestly. He just needs a foil for reelection. So what would happen if the Congress pass this b.s. and jobs still didn’t get created? Whose fault is that then?

The Capitol police would probably have gotten all pissy but —-how fun would it have been if individual Rs had set little model men figures made out of straw on their desks and lit one up every time Barry delivered a straw man argument. God, they would have been able to roast weenies and marshmallows in the chamber!

    elissa (93c1a6)

  75. I just got home and haven’t yet seen anything about the speech, but are you telling me he said that this time he’d found some for-sure shovel-ready jobs? ‘Coz last I heard he said that he’d learned the hard way that there’s no such thing as a shovel-ready job. Or something like that; I don’t really pay attention to what he says. So where did he find these new SRJs? In a Kinder Surprise?

    I still respect RS Mccain.

  79. Obama’s approval poll numbers guided his electioneering Congressional Address.

He’s at an all-time low with:
    Whites
    Hispanics
    Blacks
    Under-30
    Liberals
    Democrats

He needs to orate heavily just to get his base back, and it appears from what little I’ve read that his base didn’t much like his electioneering Congressional Address.

    John Hitchcock (7af282)

  80. Why doesn’t he dazzle the crowd with some magic.

    DohBiden (d54602)

  81. Michele B. gave a rebuttal of Urkel tonight as after the SOTU.

Stacy McCain’s clip of Bachmann’s “Who loves wet people” stump in IA is her iconic explanation of what she is up to. The speech recounts Jonathan, King Saul’s son, best friend of David, mounting a two-man assault on a group of Philistines possessing high ground.

Crazy, indeed, audacious, definitively, but whether you believe in a god or believe the Philistines thought these two were hopped up on ‘shrooms, the venture was gained.

Boehner got “98% of what he was looking for” making three successive offers without forcing a counter-offer.

Even Ryan on Hannity yesterday called that a $2 Trillion savings. Oh, really? Well, tell you what. If we actually save the $700 Million in 2012 you carved out of $3.5 Trillion and then manage to keep your job I’ll consider us off the shneid.

    Fight like a girl, Ladies.

    gary gulrud (790d43)

  82. Listened today to Rush detailing SS as a money laundering scheme, government using its cash flow to grease the skids of control. Without naming names Romney, the progressive, is targetted.

    Allah names Romney.

On Hannity Romney calls “Ponzi” terrible politics and intends fixing SS forever with means indexing, postponement of retirement, CPI adjustments, etc. He never even acknowledges the libertarian argument that it is beyond government’s moral contract.

    Government corruption survives intact.

‘Nice’ Obama. I will not vote for Shape Shifter over the antiChrist.

    gary gulrud (790d43)

  83. DohBiden asked:

Why doesn’t he dazzle the crowd with some magic.

Well, he tried, but pulling a turd out of your ass just doesn’t impress people all that much.

    The snide Dana (3e4784)

  84. The last stimulus plan was $787 billion, and it didn’t work, and our friends on the left said that was because it was way too small; think Paul Krugman here. This one is a little more than half the size of the last one which didn’t work; why should even the liberals think that it will do anything?

    The mathmetician Dana (3e4784)

  85. As you know, Dana, they Obama administration has given up fixing the problem. Mitt Romney’s debate summary was right. Obama doesn’t have a clue what to do about this.

All this stimulus is meant to do is show Obama tried, and the GOP interfered (since it won’t work, they hopefully will reject this). Obama can’t fix it, but he can blame the GOP.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  86. No earmarks, but he mentioned some specific projects.

Some ideas might be very good, and some were not spelled out at all, but there’s not even the claim that this is enough.

    Sammy Finkelman (d3de3a)

  87. The worst part of it is talk about the constuction business. Also the nonsense about crumbling schools. This has even less effect on learning than technology

(Unless maybe the rooms need air conditioning or heating or have broken windows with the wine rushing in, or there are bad acoustics or no seats, but that’s not what he’s talking about.)

Yes, start-ops are where jobs are created, but why talk about a company that has 50 employees?

He did show himself aware of a few things, particularly that’s it is small business that creates new jobs. So aware that now he said everyone knows this. I would bet two or three years ago he didn’t know this.

If he mentioned something about a tax credit of $4,000 for hiring someone who has been unemployed for over six months, why didn’t he mention that businesses are also discriminating in favor of people who currently have jobs and against long term unemployed with some words saying they shouldn’t do that or don’t need to. Isn’t that really the motive anyway? It’s not only because these are people with lower skills.

And more – why didn’t he spell out exactly how it would work?? Because that’s the difference between this tax incentive being a practical measure and people actually taking advantage of this and it just being an obscure little known provision in the tax code that an ordinary business owner would not be aware of or know how to get.

And what about people who have been out of the workforce for a while? Is this only for people now collecting unemployment?

The idea of allowing temporary work not to affect unemployment benefits (which that Georgia program sounds like) is a good idea.

Why not some answer to the objection that longer term unemployment benefits mean people look less hard for work? Does he have any? Is he even aware of it?

Another problem: There’s still this counting of jobs. Jobs are actually always created and destroyed. Whatever situation he portrays, that would exist also to some degree when there is 3% unemployment.

And what does the unemployment rate have to do with people postponing retirement in order to pay for their children’s college education? I’m sure someone showed him a letter where a person wrote about that problem. But that’s not a problem connected with the recession, or doesn’t he realize that? Or is the idea here the 1930s idea that if more people would retire there’d be more jobs?

He briefly alluded to refinancing mortgages at 4% but did not say how it would work or how many people would be eligible. Probably it has problems, or else he would have devoted more time and attention to it. I would think maybe passing a law that resulted in underwater mortgages being given in cases where there was already an underwater mortgage would be a good idea – there could still be some kind of precaution against default. Also what about converting mortgages to rental agreements? Something to recognize losses where they exist?

What about adding even more State Department visa officers so you don’t have would-be tourists from Brazil waiting weeks for an interview? That would have an immediate stimulative effect at virtually no cost.

He didn’t say anything at all about immigration by the way. farmer’s complain, and there’s this idea of allowing anyone in the world to buy a house at least one that’s underwater.

Anyway he picked some things that some Republicans had proposed in the last year. They may be good ideas, but they are not a solution.

    Sammy Finkelman (d3de3a)

  88. Milhouse 77>

are you telling me he said that this time he’d found some for-sure shovel-ready jobs?

I think that’s what he said, without using the word shovel ready, and he named them, but then said he was against earmarks.

    Sammy Finkelman (d3de3a)

  89. If something is shovel-ready, isn’t it more than likely already being funded?

    JD (318f81)

  90. Mr Finkelman wins the typo of the day award:

or have broken windows with the wine rushing in

Perhaps the windows got broken as the kids were passing the bottles in and out. 🙂

    The amused Dana (3e4784)

  91. You can have all of the alleged “shovel ready” jobs in the world, but without the required permitting out of the way, and the subsequent court challenges and appeals finalized, no shovel may be picked up, let alone thrust into the ground – unless, of course, it is to steady an overworked, weary, public-employee union-member out in the noon-day sun.

Another Drew - Restore the Republic / Obama Sucks! (7d0394)

  92. I thought “shovel-ready” meant all that had already been done. Which is why the President discovered to his amazement that there is no such thing. Until this week, apparently, when he found some.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  93. That’s the story they tried to sell, but the litigation goes forever, so there is no such thing as shovel ready unless your’re burying an EnviroFascist.
