Anatomy of a Political Smear — Aided and Abetted by Ken Layne

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:05 pm

Michele Bachmann addresses a rain-soaked crowd and asks: “Who likes wet people?”

Then, as R.S. McCain explains:

Some vicious monster ripped off my video and edited it, so that when Bachmann begins by jokingly asking the crowd, “Who likes wet people?” — because everybody was soaked to the bone, including me — instead there is a caption, “Who likes white people?”

Ken Layne of Wonkette then spread that smear all around the Internet.

You need watch only the first few seconds to see a smear in action:

Ken Layne knows his post is wrong, and refuses to do a proper correction.

Apparently snark trumps truth at his site.

I checked out the comments. A lot of the readers totally fell for the lie. I guess that’s not hard to believe. The video is edited by some complete hack.

A couple do point out it’s ‘wet people’, which leads to jokes about wetbacks.

They all seem to have Bachmann’s guts, but not a single one of them explains why. I think a lot of them actually do hate her for being a woman. Some jokes suggest putting her in her place sexually.

I realize it’s not a serious site and it doesn’t represent rank and file democrats, but you’d think someone there would be able to make a point against Bachmann, for all the anger they’ve got.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  19. Hey, is Wonkette still sans the big-name advertisers it lost after that very vicious attack on the Palin family?

And Milhouse, was the blind beggar wearing his cup when Ken Layne reached in it to steal the roll of quarters?

Ken Layne of Wonkette then spread that smear all around the Internet.

Oh, hell, what Layne and his ilk do to someone like Michelle Bachmann is nothing. At least Bachmann is an adult who can defend herself.

What makes Ken truly disgusting is not just what’s described below, but it being combined with his likely belief that his motivations and ideology rest upon a sea of humaneness, compassion, generosity and do-gooder sophistication. Hardly surprising, therefore, that even if someone like him discovers that the road to hell is paved with good intentions (whether they’re even truly good or not), that’s one road such leftists will happily travel on.

    legalinsurrection.com, William Jacobson, April 2011

Ken Layne, the owner and lead editor of Wonkette, is in damage control mode over the article by recent college grad Jack Stuef ripping into and mocking Trig Palin. Dave Weigel (h/t Instapundit) received this e-mail from Layne:
    ________

I have four kids myself and I wouldn’t want them mocked on the Internet by a bunch of cretins on the Internet. And that’s just one reason why I wouldn’t parade my children around in the media. What kind of mother does that? In any case, Jack has been admonished and put on night probation until further notice. Anything involving Palin, I want to make it extra clear that *Palin* is the problem with America. Not her kids. Not her little kid, anyway…. Trig is cool with us. Sarah Palin, on the other hand, is a grave danger to America.
    ________

First of all, Sarah Palin doesn’t “parade” her kids around any more than any other politician. Hey Ken, have you seen all those photos of the Obama kids with their parents on vacation and elsewhere? I’ve addressed this phony “prop” charge before. But more important, Layne has a very convenient memory. In 2009, as I documented in my post Wonkette Goes After Trig Palin Again, Layne mocked Trig, including running this photoshop which he took from a posting board:

In 2008, Wonkette ran a post by Jim Newell, who now works for Gawker, mocking Trig and joking: “Little baby Trig must be so glad he wasn’t aborted for this, his first Halloween, because his parents dressed him up like a political party symbol to be carried around at snarling political events. Aww. Isn’t life just grand?”

Last fall, Stuef wrote a post mocking Trig which started: “Now Sarah Palin is even more of a hero for not aborting Trig: All those retard genes came from Kenya illegally.”

And I could go on and on. Just do a search of the Wonkette website and you will find dozens of posts in which Trig either is the main focus of mockery or is the recipient of parting shots from Wonkette writer. [So] why would Stuef think that making fun of Trig was off limits given the history of Wonkette under Layne?

Layne has thrown Stuef under the bus, but it should have been the other way around.

We know our host believes in freedom of speech and hates to ban people, but we usually don’t tolerate rude people in our living room too long, or if we can’t ask them to leave, we turn a cold shoulder.

and BTW, liking white people is not an offense of any kind, millions and billions of people around the world do it every day. The problem is when dishonest, disingenious, disrespectful, discourteous people try to make up stuff with bad connotations just to cause trouble. “Stirring up strife between people is one thing that God hates” (PMDPV).

  50. Ken Layne’s knee-jerk reaction to Bachmann’s preachy speech was white-hot rage. How dare that woman use her candidacy to defy the ban on public expressions of faith.

Now, a brief mention or the occasional reference to Christianity here and there unfortunately remains a part of our backward political process. After all, so long as bible thumpers are still allowed to vote, political pandering is certainly understandable, but Bachmann’s crime was she went on and on about it, and worse, she not only seemed sincere, but the crowd reacted as if it was acceptable.

Clearly, Bachmann’s undeniable offense against established contemporary standards can not be allowed to escape righteous denunciation. She knows the self-appointed keepers of social morality have banished religious testimony from public forums, the 2nd Amendment be damned.

    Stashiu3 (601b7d)

  52. I’m with JD. There was nothing odd about Bachmann making a joke about the rain. It actually would have been kinda weird not to mention it, since everyone was drenched. Those speeches can be very unpleasant, and the candidate has to show they noticed.

All they’ve got right now is to insist the republicans are weird and stupid. That’s it.

  53. I’ve learned from my betters in the media punditocracy that Republican candidates for president are always one or more of the following:

    3) Bigoted
    4) Hypocritical
    5) God-botherers
    6) Corrupt
    7) Stupid
    8) Nekulturny

So, for example, Perry is 3,5 and 8.
    Bush I was 1,2 and 7
Bush II was 5,6,7 and 8
    Bachman is 3,5, and 7

  58. That’s pretty funny, Koam. Funny probably isn’t the right word, but I laughed.

  62. I guess this is a threadjack.

This reminds me of that movie, Brewster’s Millions. The Cloward Piven Prequel.

If you had to spend tons of money with no actual benefit, loading your brand new vehicles on airplanes and dropping them off repeatedly where you wanted to go, while flying on a separate aircraft, then never using the vehicles again, would be an inspired strategy.

And it’s not like Obama can claim he needed the precious minutes all this activity saved him (though I doubt it saved him any time). He went on vacation for over a week just after all this was over, so the only time he gained was spent on the golf course.

He could have saved tens of millions just by taking an extra day or two and riding on his super bus.

But Michelle Bachmann is the crazy idiot because she … is Christian or something.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  63. I don’t see why he didn’t just take the limo from spot to spot. The bus imagery wasn’t going to help when it’s darth vader’s super elite bus.

So long as the press reported it as a bus tour, that was all he needed. And he needed something to respond to Palin’s bus tour (paid for privately, and on which she actually did ride the thing).

    Milhouse (ee8a5d)

  64. Yes but to what purpose, he’s down to 38 in Gallup, -22 in Rasmussen, he doesn’t have anything to offer, which does make it a waste.

    ian cormac (996c34)

  65. Ian, Milhouse,

Plus, we have television sets and the internet. It’s really stupid to bother talking to Americans in person. We’re in a severe recession with a massive debt, so absurd spending to try to meet Americans and give speeches is a stupid way of communication.

He shouldn’t be leaving the White House premises until he studies what conditions explain job growth (Indiana, Wisconsin, Texas) and what conditions explain job destruction (MI, CA, NY).

Then he can emerge on TV and explain a grand new scheme to ‘create’ jobs. No buses and stunts necessary.

Of course, since Obama is not sincerely interested in these reforms, everything he’s doing makes sense. It’s all a grand show, so the grander the show the better. Effectiveness is not important. I’m surprised he didn’t order 500 gleaming black buses for dragging main through all the swing states so idiots could point and say ‘there’s Obama creating or saving my job!’

  73. My initial reaction to the big black bus tour was disgust. But as time passes I’ve changed my mind about it somewhat. Yes, the outrageous cost of the buses and the planes has not changed. But after the fact, the over all extravaganza has for the most part been seen as a bust all around, and has hurt Obama I think. His hayseed backdrops and talking down to “the farm folk” did not sit too well out here in the Midwest. The video of Barry condescendingly schooling an elderly farmer about not “believing everything he hears” about upcoming new regulations and telling the farmer to “call the USDA” to get the “facts” was made more silly by the fact that the regs the farmer was referring to are from the EPA.

I’m sure that with eye-witnesses and local reporting it will not be too difficult to ascertain with certainty where the buses first appeared and how they got from place to place over the 3 day tour. I have no specific info about that other than the photo ops and videos of Obama’s barn-hall meetings which were made available to the networks each night.

But– I am highly amused that Tommy, of all people, has used (of all available words) the word “fake”, in his headline about the bus kerfuffle.

But it is an apology, so it needs to be noted here.

    Milhouse (ee8a5d)

  88. And by “the lowlife” I mean the original smear artist, not Ken Layne.

    Milhouse (ee8a5d)

  89. Does anyone have any real evidence about this bus tour thing?

I doubt C-17s were flying them to every single stop.

We have photos of Obama getting on or off the bus at airports. Seems pretty clear he at least was not really on a bus tour… just pretending to be while flying from airport to airport.

It’s going to be difficult to get confirmation on how the buses were transported.

Media Matters blames the Secret Service for ordering the ‘cost effective’ buses, but I still don’t understand why Obama wanted to pretend to be on a bus tour. He’s got a limo. No one holds it against the president for using a limousine to get from the airport to his speech.

We’ll see how the WH responds. They haven’t denied it so far, and the report is a day old. It needs to be investigated.

I’m not sure what’s so wild about the accusation, though. Loading up the presidential motorcade is common procedure. If it’s true that Obama is flying around from stop to stop, that suggests his motorcade is flying with him. It’s just that a bus is a stupid, stupid vehicle for such a motorcade. A prop.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  90. Elissa, nobody expects him to have slept in the bus. But people were expecting him to have traveled in it. By road.

    Milhouse (ee8a5d)

  91. That said, I’m sure for the shorter legs of the trip he rode the bus. If he was going 20 miles, of course he didn’t backtrack to one airport and then fly to another.

But at least one of the debunkings claims the C-17 needs a huge airfield, and that one is not accurate. I think the truth is that the president was not really on a bus for several days, but rather made sure it was available so he could step off it. Sometimes he rode it. Altogether, though, the bus served no purpose beyond being a prop.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  92. We have photos of Obama getting on or off the bus at airports. Seems pretty clear he at least was not really on a bus tour… just pretending to be while flying from airport to airport.

Thanks Dustin. I honestly hadn’t heard about it. The article at the linked site and Live Leak have a lot of ALLCAPS, bad grammar and misspellings. The linked photos of Obama were renamed and have no EXIF data (time, location, camera type). The article cites “An AP reporter” without giving a name. My BS detector was in the red.

    carlitos (49ef9f)

  93. “Have” = “has.” Ironic in a sentence where I criticize someone’s grammar.

    Comment by carlitos — 8/30/2011 @ 5:26 pm

    I think that’s reasonable.

There’s no doubt in my mind that that account is not completely accurate. The route had too many stops near eachother and it just isn’t the case they flew the bus between each one. And hopefully they merely flew it to the first one and drove it for most of them.

Hopefully. It’s not a big deal to me if the president has a great motorcade. That’s actually a good thing. But a bus seems a little silly.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  95. A bus is definitely not as cool as a train. I’m thinking of Truman at the end of his whistle stop tour in St. Louis, holding the Chicago Tribune. 🙂 I always thought it was cool that Reagan used the same train, the Ferdinand Magellan, on his re-election campaign trail.

    carlitos (49ef9f)

  96. I was angry so I decided to take Mrs. Bachmann’s line out of context to make her seem more overtly racist in light of her recent signing of that Iowa marriage pledge that said black children were better off under slavery than in Obama’s America.

    So it’s a sort-of apology at best…

    Dana (4eca6e)

  97. black children were better off under slavery than in Obama’s America.

I’m just going to make a wild guess that this is not an accurate reflection of any comment Bachmann has made or supported.

Since the guy saying it admitted he likes to make things up to smear Bachmann.

I’m not surprised though. But anyone who thinks opposition to Obama has to do with his race must be living under a rock.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  98. The text which offended OnkneesforJesus, thus his justification for the video manipulation,

Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA‟s first African-American President.

LBJ‟s 1965 War on Poverty was triggered in part by the famous “Moynihan Report” finding that the black out-of-wedlock birthrate had hit 26%; today, the white rate exceeds that, the overall rate is 41%, and over 70% of African-American babies are born to single parents4 – a prime sociological indicator for poverty, pathology and prison regardless of race or ethnicity.

    Dana (4eca6e)

  99. What’s funny about this is, that if the O team had just positioned and funded it as a mini kick-off campaign bus tour from the get-go (which everybody wink wink knows to be the truth) then all the questions about the itinerary would be moot.

    elissa (3c0713)

  100. Pre-emptive strike: Lest any trolls pop over to sneer about those stoopid Christians, this video manipulator is anything but. From his profile:

“My life is all about getting on my knees and faithfully servicing Jesus until He comes.”

    Dana (4eca6e)

  101. Dana, thanks.

So it’s a lie to say Bachmann or this statement was somehow understating how bad slavery was.

Actually I think the statement is insightful, as one of the horrors of slavery was how some families were broken apart for sale. And yet today the same thing is happening in a different way. It’s not as evil, but it’s still leaving kids without both parents, and having a huge impact.

Why in the world would anyone find that statement objectionable?

I would bet this wasn’t the real motivation for the smear. He smeared her as racist and hunted for an excuse. The real sin is that Michelle is a conservative.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  102. Hi Dana, I’m not calling the video manipulator “stoopid,” Christian or otherwise, but …

yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA‟s first African-American President.

What? Is this supposed to imply that children born into slavery were were better off than children born to single mothers in 2011, because they had both parents? What?

    carlitos (49ef9f)

  103. I think some liberals hate it when conservatives make a valid point so that makes them desperate to discredit it.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  104. carlitos,

I think the point is clear: Children – of any race – are better of born into a two-parent home where both parents are actively participating in the upbringing of said children as opposed to those raised by a single parent.

While the statement makes me uncomfortable, if one just looks at the essence of it, the point is made. However, because of the brutality and reality of slavery meant that every part of their lives – including the family – was subject to all manner of abuse – I think that the wording is very poor at best and it could have been much more effectively and less distractingly worded.

    Dana (4eca6e)

  105. What? Is this supposed to imply that children born into slavery were were better off than children born to single mothers in 2011, because they had both parents? What?

    Comment by carlitos

What part of this makes you think they are saying a child in slavery is better off than one today?

    That comparison is never made.

In fact, the statement clarifies that slavery had a disastrous effect on slaves. I do not understand how this is remotely hard to follow.

They are saying one of the bad things about slavery is still with us. In fact it’s gotten a lot worse. That’s the truth. Families being broken apart is still happening and it’s pervasive if you are inclined to make blacks into a category and look at their family structure.

People should try to start families when they can provide two parents, because it’s bad for kids who don’t get two parents. It certainly was when slave families were broken apart (as I noted, it’s one of the most memorable horrors of that era).

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  106. I think that the wording is very poor at best and it could have been much more effectively and less distractingly worded.

    Comment by Dana — 8/30/2011 @ 5:57 pm

I disagree. I really like the point it’s trying to make. A lot of people are doing to themselves what slaves were forced into against their will. While it’s not as evil that way, it’s a terrible choice.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  107. Eh…

“While the quoted statement makes me uncomfortable, if one just looks at the essence of it, the point is made. 108. Regardless, it’s quite silly to say this Bachmann’s support of this statement is racist or justifies really anything. It’s just not disagreeable if you look at it straight.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  109. Dustin, in fact the C-17 could land/take-off in your average Mid-West/IA corn-field if the farmer would take in the sprinkler system (Heh!);
and, I doubt if they could do any serious travelling in the Cad-monster – it probably gets worse mileage than that Prevost, and has a much, much smaller tank.

  110. I doubt if they could do any serious travelling in the Cad-monster

I’ve always been very curious about those limos.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  111. Dustin,

I agree with the statement and its blunt and unfortunate truth, however, I believe there is an atmosphere of looking for anything to label racist, and if one reads the statement without reason and deliberation but instead with a pre-conceived misconception of conservatism in place, this plays right into that. The facts and truth of the comparison are lost in the falderol. I guess I think why feed into that with such a serious issue when it’s not necessary?

    Dana (4eca6e)

  112. Don’t you remember when it got high-centered in Ireland?
It’s a low-slung tank without the climbing ability, and must weigh around 5-6 tons.
Wonderful protection in an urban environment, but not an Interstate-Cruiser.

  113. I believe there is an atmosphere of looking for anything to label racist

Great point. It gave this piece of trash a chance to justify what he did, while further smearing his victim. I doubt much happens to him as a result. It’s just the way of the world now.

And imagine if the C-17 claim was a complete fabrication, that Obama had actually boarded his bus at the White House and went on a real tour, staying at a few hotels but otherwise living on the bus.

It would probably be harder to pull of that kind of smear (photoshoping a few pics, and evading the MSM’s Obama defense network), but that’s probably where we’re headed.

One side’s liars vs the other side’s liars.

  114. Wonderful protection in an urban environment, but not an Interstate-Cruiser.

Comment by Another Drew – Restore the Republic / Obama Sucks!

Maybe a bus isn’t a bad idea, then.

    Or better yet, a helicopter.

    Dustin (b2fb78)

  115. No, the Prevost is a wonderful way to travel, or to use as a hospitality center.
But, it is a bit pretentious if you’re sending the damn thing from event to event, and flying to meet it. The staying in a hotel wouldn’t bother me too much as the security aspect is probably easier to deal with in a fixed location. Can you imagine the nightmare of the SecSrvc closing off an RV Park so the Prez can stay over-night – there are long-term guests in some of those places, really long term. What would you do with them?
But it just boils down to the complete lack of appreciation for the hardships that the country is going through, and the visuals that the WH gives off with travelling in a Million-Dollar, CANADIAN-built, motor home, and then flying off to The Vineyard (on seperate planes, plus the planes for the entourage, etc), and Michelle’s $10MM vacations, and the NYC date-night.
At some point you just throw up your hands and wonder, what kind of idiots are we?
    Louis XIV had better visuals.

Another Drew - Restore the Republic / Obama Sucks! (5a8b7e)

  116. Yes, Obama can’t really frame this as Bush did, as a man going back home to do his job as his ranch. There’s just such a consistency to the wastefulness and fake imagery. It’s not just one thing. It’s a lot of things.

At one point I figured they were making a point of elevating Obama’s stature as someone fit for royal-ish trappings, out of insecurity. Now I think the problem is that when Barack or Michelle plan X,Y,Z, no one on staff is willing to say what a bad idea it is.
