Just to Keep the Rules Clear…

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 1:53 pm

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

It is racist to refer to the debt as a black cloud.

But publishing this photograph is not sexist.

Just to keep the rules clear.

  7. Aaron, they ain’t got no shame.

The ‘black cloud’ and ‘black hole’ hysterics were projection from people whose politics originate from a hateful heart. They cannot understand their opponents not having that heart.

Bachmann, for example, has to be lampooned as a sex object because they hate her so very much. And they hate her because they assume she is hateful. For no apparent reason.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  8. It’s not as if this photo was on some obscure site, right? Yes, it was first published by the UK Daily Telegraph, but it’s been repeated at Reuters & Salon blogs. And the Perry photo too. I’m reminded of the AP photographer who took a pic of Sarah Palin getting her hair fixed by her daughter Bristol in Haiti. Bristol’s face was obscured, and the caption read something about Palin’s hair getting “done”, as if she were a diva.

This is all deliberately done & spun by “mainstream” liberals/progressives.

I want nothing to do with these people. I’m through. I want my country back, or I want a new country, dammit.

  13. Fair enough, Aphrael.

You find a statement from Bachmann to be hateful. Though she presented her view in earnest, so the legitimate way to respond is the way I already know you would: you’d use an argument. You wouldn’t sexualize her with a trashy selection of photos.

It’s healthy, in my opinion, to get out there what people really think is wrong or right or absent of morality about homosexuality.

Just present real opinions, and hash it out like adults. I think the statement you find hateful is doing that. It does convey deep judgment that I’d resent if used against my lifestyle. But I’d rather someone have the spine to just tell me what they really think instead of play PC about it.

For example, I have no clue what Obama thinks of this issue, but his leadership on it is confused. It seems like he’s playing politics with it. He’s made a huge show of his Christianity, naming a memoir after a radical sermon, and then shut that whole aspect down when it was no longer relevant to his sought constituency.

Short term, this is very convenient. Long term, I think it’s unhealthy.

At the very least, you know that you cannot support Ms Bachmann (I’m assuming). That’s a respect she’s shown you. Small consolation, but she deserves better than this treatment, which in my opinion does go through any attractive woman’s mind before she sets out to run for office.

I don’t know. Sounds a lot like blaming the victim.

She’s gotta eat. I recall being at a party with Maxine Waters (I crashed it… I was a peon) and she was drunk and fell. There was a photographer and I eagerly read the paper the next day and there was no photo.

It’s going to be a year+ of candidates on the road, eating, going to bathrooms, tripping, having hair blow in their faces.

Yet I know, for sure, 99.999999% of Obama gaffes will not be displayed by major media operations, and many, many displays from Republicans will be.

It’s just the way it works.

  30. In fact, I practically guarantee Anita would never select this photo herself.

I don’t think it’s really fair to ask politicians to scrutinize their diet forever to avoid being shown simulating oral sex.

We already have a problem with a political class that self selects for some very odd people who planned for the presidency with sterile existences for most of their lives. Secrecy and weirdness. It’s practically impossible for a normal person to make it. Now they have to avoid eating x,y,z? Then their kids too, if they are female children of Republicans, I assume.

That’s the world we live in, and frankly it ticks me off.

I like to keep my porn and my politics separate .. and, really, the decision to sexualize Mrs. Bachmann should be *her* decision, not anyone elses, and as far as I can tell, she hasn’t chosen to go down that path, so other people shouldn’t force her down it.

That said, I really, really dislike Mrs. Bachmann, because of comments like the one I quoted.

I guess I agree with Dustin that there is reason to be angry and resent Bachmann for her opinions on homosexuality, but I’m not sure why you characterize her comments as “hateful” (unless that was simply the word that first came to mind in your understandable anger). One may think her comments as wrong, stupid, condescending, and patronizing, but I do not find them “hateful” in the sense of being reflective of malice.
I imagine she would say similar things about someone who had a habit of indulging in pornography to the point it destroyed their family, whether the porn was homo or hetero in nature. The emotion behind the statement was one of concern, not one of wishing ill will. People who seek to find ways to embarass, humiliate, or denigrate someone in public are being directly hateful, wishing to damage someone’s reputation or image.

Now, I understand that you would think that if that is Bachmann’s way of showing concern that she can keep it to herself and you want no part of it. But as Dustin said, an appropriate response would be to declare how wrong you think she is and that you don’t think one can hold office in a pluralistic society who thinks that way.

But I saw it at Huffpo and the UK Telegraph.

Toronto Sun is in on the act as well.

Basically, they are going out of their way to show a Republican in the absolute worst possible light, no doubt taking hundreds of thousands of photos. Meanwhile, Obama gets halos and if he stumbles or gets ketchup on his chin or something, that’s not relevant so it’s not published.

  45. aphrael – What I find interesting is that at a time when voters are interested more than 60:1 in jobs and the economy than gay marriage, news anchors like David Gregory and Anderson Cooper want candidates such as Michele Bachmann to spend time focusing on issues and past statements clearly not anywhere near the top of the voting public’s agenda. Meanwhile they skip trying to pin down President Obama on his evolving stance on similar issues.

That is part of keeping the rules clear, right?

I know researchers have attempted to equate various external characteristics of people with their sexuality. For example, that a high percentage of male homosexuals speak a certain way or favor Broadway show tunes (or any other stereotype), or that female homosexuals are into sports.

But when surveys indicate that around 80-plus percent of gay people are politically of the left — which is a pretty lopsided ratio — the theory of causality really needs to start on focusing on how leftism contributes to (or triggers?) homosexual behavior, or visa versa.

  86. Late to the party as usual.

Let’s see if I can do this book-end right. (Phat chance.)

I have stated on numerous occasions that Conservative sites need a lot more aphraels and a lot fewer Leftist blathering trolls. While it is quite rare that I ever agree with aphrael, I appreciate and respect his well-reasoned comments. They raise the bar of debate and keep us on our toes. They also help us to understand reasonable Liberals better and help us to reason with reasonable Liberals better.

I stated early in my commenting here (in context with the article and resultant thread) that the Bible declares homosexuality an abomination — a much stronger declarative than most sinful acts and conditions. I believed homosexuality is an abomination then, I believe it now, and I will believe it till the day I die, and further, into the afterlife. As all sinful lifestyles put the people engaged in them in bondage to that sin, and homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle, the inclusive nature of the subset requires that a homosexual lifestyle puts the homosexual in bondage to that sin. It’s just the facts as they are. But, as a Christian, I also know there is a Way out of bondage. So, it’s not hate for the person (actually, it’s love for the person) but rather hate for the sin and the destruction it brings.

As I said, I’ve written on blogs that the Bible states without doubt that homosexuality is an abomination. But I’ve written far more times — on adj Dana’s blog mostly — that I have much more respect for, and much more desire for, aphrael’s commenting and debating than the Liberal trolls that are so prevalent on many Conservative blogsites. I have known about aphrael’s lifestyle choice since nearly the beginning of my time commenting on PP, and my position regarding that has no effect on my respect for his commenting.

I hope I book-ended that well enough. (Phat chance.)
