A Not True Story That Still Has an Element of Truth

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:05 am

Once there was this criminal who didn’t want people to know his real name. So he gave police a fake name.

So then of course he was declared a “fake person.” And prosecutors couldn’t file charges.

Because how can you file charges against a fake person?

See what I mean?

P.S. If this makes no sense to you, you haven’t been following the ins and outs of Weinergate to the nth degree. Which, hey. That might be a good thing.

  5. Tommy ain’t too good at logic, is he? He could give kman a run for its money regarding illogical thought.
BTW, did kman stop stalking you Aaron, or did it just drown from mouthbreathing while drinking.

  6. People who lie very badly and even produce false documents swearing truth are still deserving of faith and credit if they say what you like.

If contemporaneous acts and statements should be inconsistent with their later statements, It can probably be worked out.

SarahW – Plus their lies can be corroborated as the truth with other people involved in the story. WAIT A MINUTE!

  8. Just keep in mind how many more Tommys there are everyday out in media land helpfully deciding for us what we do and don’t need to know, suppressing pesky facts which are inconvenient-to-the-chosen-narrative, callously repeating already disproved memes, and interpreting the news for the rest of us based largely on unsubstantiated or unvetted stories whispered in their ears by favored “sources”.

  13. elissa,
It’s journalists like that who keep the likes of Breitbart and O’Keefe in business. Most of my peers still fancy themselves as gatekeepers, although the rest of the fence long ago burned down.

  15. In my view one of the very few people in this whole mess who has seemed authentic and normal is Kirsten Powers.

When Weiner, a long time friend of hers initially begged for her support and assured her it was all lies and a set up by his enemies, she did what I think most of us would have done–stand up for a friend who had been there for us in the past. That feels like a very normal, human, gut reaction toward a friend in need. But when she found out via his confession that he had bald-faced lied to her–and had used her, (and then when she viewed his aggressive and blatantly over the top denials and accusations in the Peter Karl ABC interview) she went ballistic. She was furious that she had put her own reputation on the line for a scumbag of a lying creep and she went public in an essay seen widely on both the right and the left. That, too, seemed like very normal human behavior that most of us could relate to–a “how dare you make a fool out of me, A-hole” response.

Compare that to Tommy. Absolutely nothing is normal about his reaction to (allegedly) being lied to and professionally humiliated via the B&V fiasco. His public stance seems to be, “Gee I guess those folks who contacted me and gave me my scoop were fake and fooled me. Hey, I tried. Whatever, dude”. He is so invested in this and so deep in the weeds that apparently he cannot even manage to feign outrage that he was punked, or want to redeem himself by even pretending to try to find out who these people were. That is very strange behavior indeed.

  16. TC , Capital “J” Jerk.

  17. Re TC’s “very strange behavior” – exactly. That’s why I said previously to use the reasonable person test – how would I feel if I’d been lied to & used – I’d be mad as hell & want to find out who lied & why. In his interview last night by Larry O’Connor, he was his usual condescending, arrogant, patronizing self – he didn’t express the least bit of outrage nor any curiosity as to who B & V really are.

When TC’s been questioned, he just responds by justifying his actions, and by saying that HE checked out the identities of B & V et al, so – end of subject – closed case. I haven’t heard him express even frustration about how B & V & B’s mom lied to him.

Something is really really wrong here. And it’s not just that oh, TC was lied to, move along, nothing to see. Didn’t TC admit in one interview (can’t find it) that he helped write Betty’s mom’s statement (which I actually thought from the beginning, because it was so preachy & pro-Weiner, and not what a normal parent would write)? I have NEVER heard of any real Journalist with a capital J doing that.

  18. Another thing that’s kind of crafty about Kos’ new piece calling out TC as a LIAR is that if (and I realize it’s a big if) Tommy ever does finally see the benefit of admitting that, well, maybe the fake B&V might have been something other than a right wing plot, there will be Kos again saying to TC, “hey I already caught you lying, you big liar, why should we believe you now?”

That’s a good point. Kos and most of the readers there are unbelievable in their shameless and open intention to spin everything for partisan ends. They really do not care what the truth is.

But anyone who can be persuaded already knows Kos is disreputable.

Kos’s need to repeatedly pronounce this was a right wing operation is just as much a lie as any lie he has pointed out on Tommy’s part. Plus, Kos’s defense doesn’t make any sense. He questioned if these people were minors because he googled their names and found someone in Arkansas, and therefore he was justified in leaving their names up? Why did his diarist remove them, then? Because it was the honorable thing to do with the information people had at the time (except CYA Tommy).

Regardless, I sure love it when Kos comes up in this story, because it’s a reminder of just how ridiculous their arguments were before Weiner admitted what he did, when he was merely refusing to deny anything. They are the worst cranks out there.
