Planning to call in.

Available here.

Will try to embed below the fold.

UPDATE: It’s over and I couldn’t do the embed. But many of you listened and heard some CLASSIC lines from Tommy, like:

“They fooled me into telling a true story.”

And:

“They basically told me nothing.”

Classic.

  3. Now Tommy says Weiner’s contact with Ethel was inappropriate – isn’t that a change?

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  4. Tommy does not understand the concept of corroboration.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  5. “They fooled me into telling a true story”

How do you know it’s true?

    yibbety, yibbety, yibbety

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  6. They fooled me into printing a true story!

  9. Larry is killing this guy.

Tommy’s really not that bright, as it turns out, is he?

    Patterico (135ea8)

  10. Larry has got to STFU and let Tommy answer.

    koam (0a6089)

  11. Tommy keeps saying his interpretation is “consistent with . . ” which is a real elastic phrase.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (8d1c7a)

  12. TOmmy is saying that B&V were making allegations against BREITBART?

    koam (0a6089)

  13. I must be even tireder than I thought. I cannot make sense of what I heard. Literally, it’s gibberish.

I’m going to bed. I’ll read about this in the morning, and see if you folks made sense of it.

  14. TOmmy is saying that B&V were making allegations against BREITBART?

    Comment by koam — 6/20/2011 @ 9:39 pm

Yeah. They (assuming this happened at all) claimed Breitbart was trying to get them to lie.

And Tommy, genius journalist, kept this obvious load of crap a secret for a while. As best as I can tell, this preserved their credibility wrongly.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  15. What is Tommy saying was wrong with the Ethe-Weiner contact?

  16. What is Tommy saying was wrong with the Ethe-Weiner contact?

    Comment by koam — 6/20/2011 @ 9:46 pm

I dunno, but apparently he said it first.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  17. The show sounds GREAT but for some reason Larry can’t hear that.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  18. How can anyone defend this a**hole after this interview? What an arrogant, deceitful jerk.

He keeps talking about “independently verifiable” – but he’s only talking about himself – as the arbiter. Who does he think he is – God?

And he has absolutely no curiosity as to who Betty & Veronica & Betty’s mom are – and what their motivations were in lying to him. No curiosity.

    Miranda (4104db)

  19. Tommy so proud of himself, defender of false children.

    koam (0a6089)

  20. Patterico is right

    koam (0a6089)

  21. Seriously, if you can’t hear clearly, try my link.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  22. The show sounds GREAT but for some reason Larry can’t hear that.

    Comment by Patterico

Sounds perfect. And it’s obvious you’re from the Metroplex.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  23. Larry is channeling Chris Matthews with the non-stop blabber and interruptions.

    koam (0a6089)

  24. To the point, Patterico. Why can’t Tommy admit he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know?

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (8d1c7a)

  25. Jeeeeeeez.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  26. Tommy is defending adults, not children. They are sophisticated and committed a fraud on the American people, and the people have a right to know who they are.

    Tommy’s evasion is annoying.

I also like how Tommy is relying on how the headline was defending Breitbart while also noting he isn’t responsible for it.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  27. Larry says “setting up a prostitution ring on behalf of the Congressman”

    WTF?

    koam (0a6089)

  28. Larry’s right of course. This idea that Tommy keeping the obvious attempt to smear Breitbart a secret was helpful to Breitbart is a total load of crap.

Showing these people had an anti-breitbart axe to grind is important.

and Tommy’s “It was my judgment” only underlines this point. Why does Tommy get to be the arbiter of whether we get the story?

    Dustin (c16eca)

  29. THe subheadline on page 2 …not clear who it exonerates?

    koam (0a6089)

  30. Gennette corroborated everything for Tommy so the story, whatever it is in Tommy’s mind, is still true.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  31. I’ve been on hold.. They didn’t take my call for Tommy.

    koam (0a6089)

  32. Gennette corroborated everything for Tommy so the story, whatever it is in Tommy’s mind, is still true.

    Comment by daleyrocks — 6/20/2011 @ 9:58 pm

Surreal, isn’t it? It’s like Tommy thinks we are idiots.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  33. What a looser! Do people actually let him interview them?

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  34. Do people actually let him interview them?

The real question seems to be what kind of person would select Tommy for this scoop. I think we know whoever did was expecting Tommy to be conducive to their fraud. Either because he’s a dupe or because he’s in on it.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  35. It was too subtle and I tried to throw it in there anyway, but:

Not only does Gennette have no reason to have personal knowledge of Weiner’s tweets to Nikki, but . . .

She has a HUGE motive to make Girls’ Story #1 seem incredible. Because Girls’ Story #1 is that Gennette was all flirty with Weiner.

So what do you do, as Gennette? Get some sap NYT reporter to put you on a pedestal as an authority on Nikki/Betty and Marianela/Veronica. Get Tommy to take your crap opinion as “corroboration.”

    Wow.

    Wow.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  36. She has a HUGE motive to make

You’ve often looked to the motivations of sources. I’m not sure why Tommy doesn’t do it. Sure, I bet it’s hard to do that consistently unless you’re warned to do so, but after it’s been brought up 53 times you should learn to think that way if you want to be a journalist.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  37. Dustin,

How can you tell I’m from the Metroplex?!?!?!

    Patterico (135ea8)

  38. “you should learn to think that way if you want to be a journalist.”

Dustin – Make that Capital “J” Journalist please.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  39. How can you tell I’m from the Metroplex?!?!?!

    Comment by Patterico

Accent. I was trying to say your voice was clear.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  40. I’m not going to lie: much of this story completely flies over my head and some of the speculation has seemed ridiculous before panning out as pretty correct, or seemed true before being exposed as wrong.

It’s a very tough story to cover, and Tommy C still thinks he’s the guy to control the story? After all this screwing up? He really needs to have the personal humility to see it’s better to show his work to others. One reason he’s so crappy at this is his inability to act like he is aware he’s crappy at this.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  41. UPDATE: It’s over and I couldn’t do the embed. But many of you listened and heard some CLASSIC lines from Tommy, like:

  42. That’s the first time someone has told me I had an accent in a while.

Maybe it emerges more when I get upset/excited?

    Patterico (135ea8)

  43. Larry O’Connor seems kind of impatient with the minutae involved. Which I understand, because a) there is a bigger picture here and b) there has been some CRAZY theorizing. Including at one blog today that I won’t name because I like the dude — but if you saw it, you saw even him sort of backing down and saying: “Whoa. I sort of went crazy there.”

But the remaining questions, I contend, are important. Mainly because I wonder if there is still an untold underage scandal out there. Also because I wonder if there is an untold abuse of power scandal. And the various seeming “double agent” angle is a great mystery.

Me, I think it’s way simpler than everybody says. Probably those DMs I published today are authentic. Betty/Nikki and mom concealed their ID out of fear/help from Weiner. They told the truth to Stack and lied to Tommy.

Just a guess. I’m not going to sit here and tell you definitively that something is true when I have no idea.

I’ll leave that to the professionals.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  44. Maybe it emerges more when I get upset/excited?

    Maybe.

You don’t sound like a stereotypical Texan on TV (East Texas or West Texas), but I think most Texans would realize you’re from the Dallas area.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  45. “Whoa. I sort of went crazy there.”

    Andrew Sullivan crazy!

    That was funny.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  46. Mainly because I wonder if there is still an untold underage scandal out there. Also because I wonder if there is an untold abuse of power scandal. And the various seeming “double agent” angle is a great mystery.

I think a big factor is that Weiner’s behavior is so insane no explanation will ever seem to explain it.

There is probably more to the story on the abuse of power end. The way Weiner operated with that ABC interview makes it hard to believe he wouldn’t behave that way. Pure speculation. Twitter, facebook, etc should be asked by law enforcement for Weiner’s messages, obviously. I don’t think the story is over until that’s checked.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you definitively that something is true when I have no idea.

    LOL

    Dustin (c16eca)

  47. You don’t sound like a stereotypical Texan on TV (East Texas or West Texas), but I think most Texans would realize you’re from the Dallas area.

    Whoa there.

    That’s Fort Worth, son.

Dallas is one of them Eastern cities.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  48. It’s all a big strip mall anyway.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  49. Just kidding. I have family in the Grapevine area, and I used to live in Arlington.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  50. I used to live in Bedford. In 4th grade.

  51. Since Christopher said he phrased his conclusion wrong, should he not now issue a correction or a clarification?

    Patterico (135ea8)

  52. I’m surprised Tommy hasn’t played the race card yet on this story. That’s usually one of his staples.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  53. Patterico,

I see some issues with the first two DM screen caps of Rep. Weiner and Gennette.

The DM at the top has an artifact just to the left of the thumbnail of Rep. Weiner. Also his image is not aligned as it is in the last one on the screen grab.

    Gennette & Weiner May 15
    http://bit.ly/m4DHMQ

Same type of issues with the DMs from Rep Weiner, the image does not align with the text as it does on his regular twitter page and there are artifacts near the top left edge of the image.

    Joe

    Joe Smith (54c0c1)

  54. Yes Joe, the pics are obviously fake. It had to be pointed out for me to see it, but the time of each tweet is sometimes not aligned with the rest of the text. It’s quite obvious when you look for it.

Wasn’t Aaron or someone asking Tommy why he didn’t turn any of this over the law enforcement? He had evidence raising reasonable questions about a known creepy sexting loser talking to minors, and embargoed that aspect. That makes no sense. Except now it makes perfect sense that he wouldn’t want law enforcement looking at the claims these girls exist. For the same reason Weiner wouldn’t want law enforcement searching for hackers who don’t exist.

Yeah, don’t let up on this point. It’s amazing to me that Tommy isn’t falling over himself to apologize for harming the innocent. If he’s honestly screwing up, then he needs to admit he’s not handling this story correctly and show his work to others. Fraudsters obviously do not get to keep their anonymity.

But he’s not honestly screwing up, is he?
