Video: The Weiner Presser (Update: Brietbart Responds)

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 12:40 pm

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

Note to readers: This is actually the open thread from earlier today, re-titled and bumped up to the top, only this time with the video of the conference.  I originally planned to start a new thread with this video, but I figured it would be better to “recycle” the thread because it would preserve any commentary by our regulars.  The original post will follow below the fold, and every single comment has been preserved—indeed, that is why I did it this way.

Update: Here’s Breitbart’s reaction.

[It wouldn’t embed. Use the link to listen.]

So hey let’s watch, shall we?

Watching it, he certainly doesn’t strike the tone of a man terribly sorry for what he did. There doesn’t seem to be any choked up words, etc. Mostly he seems to be sorry we are upset.

It’s worth noting that the crude heckler was reportedly a writer with the Howard Stern show.  I know, I know, that’s such a big surprise and you have to love how they delicately explain it:

Interrupting Weiner with a barrage of questions about the representative’s body, Bronk was shushed by reporters who had gathered at a senior center in Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood to hear the disgraced Democrat step down.

(emphasis added.) Um, more like he asked him about the size of it.  Which you would think all of us would know by now (rolls eyes).  More from the article:

It was Bronk who was also at Weiner’s news conference earlier this month when the congressman  admitted to lying about his online activity with several women. At that news conference, Bronk blasted  out similar questions and was later belted in the leg with a bike chain after he walked into a live shot and interrupted a local Fox news reporter with other shenanigans.

After that incident, Stern explained to his audience that he does not send Bronk out to cause such interruptions. In fact, he can barely get the portly writer to come into the studio each morning on time. Nonetheless, the self-proclaimed King of all Media joyfully played the clips from news reports of Bronk’s mischief-making and notes that his former intern is asking questions that people want to know.

Twitter users noticed Bronk’s behavior, and according to a tweet from the New York Daily News, so did the NYPD, who reportedly dragged the writer from the scene.

Note to everyone involved: if you are a Congressperson in NYC having a sex scandal, hold your press conferences in Washington.  I have a feeling the guy won’t go that far to heckle you.

Also for a little Weinerfreude, here’s Alan Colmes’ reaction to the news:

I think to be fair, it wasn’t fair to assert that a person would be a hypocrite just because you think they would be.  You have to be ready to back that up.  And honestly I doubt Colmes would be that much of a cheeseball.

Anyway, the original post follows below the fold.

——————————–

If you can watch it, why not talk about it?  The press conference will be in about any minute, allegedly, if Brietbart doesn’t take over the thing first—and if that happened, that would be likely to be amusing too.

And get your Weiner jokes in now.  They are about to become moot, or at least decreasingly relevant.

And let me say it (more) right this time.  Everyone who participated seeking the truth deserves praise for this.  Patrick, Lee, Ace, Dan Wolfe, Andrew Breitbart and there are certainly others I am forgetting.  While it is not a happy thing to see a man destroy himself like this, it is good to see truth and justice win out and that is what I am celebrating.

  2. no one tells me anything

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  3. Weiner is stepping down because he is announcing that he is running for President. Inside sources say he was considering a run but only made up his mind when Atty General Eric Holder agreed to be his running mate.

    BTW live.cnn.com is streaming it.

    Paul (59d3fd)

  4. He’s late again. Breitbart apparently is not there as the opening act this time, though.

  8. A moment in internet history. Bloggers. tweeters and the new media combined forces to remove a corrupt politician. I may only be commenting on your actions, but it still feels great to hang around and talk with people who made a difference. Bravo people. One more blow for the turning of the tide.

  11. Grandstanding press conference. Typical. He can’t let go and can’t go quietly.

  15. Not weepy. Very politiciany.

  17. He’s finally liking Republicans. How amusing.

  18. No humility.

    SusanT (355042)

  19. Buh-bye.

    MSE (15365c)

  20. bmertz, he is not leaving politics. At least, that’s my guess based on his speech. This isn’t a ‘leave me alone I am so sorry’. This is ‘I have pride and God on my side’. He’s going to at least try to get back into power.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  21. He didn’t want to resign, I think.

    MayBee (081489)

  22. Why do Democrats get to bring God into it? If a Republican did that, he’d be mocked as a bible thumping jerk and hypocrite.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  23. He is not tuned into the real world is he?

    elissa (bfc104)

  24. He could have made almost the same speech, in the same tone, to announce his run for mayor.

    MayBee (081489)

  25. The hecklers made it worth the watch!

    Paul (59d3fd)

  26. MSNBC calls him defiant and notes his values.

    Amazing.

But they are right. We haven’t seen the last of this guy. Is he still running for Mayor? I wouldn’t bet against that. I wouldn’t even bet against him winning this time.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  27. It’s that same bizarre defiant tone he used with that ABC interview, only in a slightly different direction. The sense of entitlement and self centeredness is interesting.

He’s doing this in a way that will continue interest in his politics, keep him at least a little relevant, and thus, keep all these kids, women, etc, somewhat in the spotlight. It’s a lot like the Cordova strategy.

MSNBC is praising this guy! Praising him! After he lied to all MSNBC viewers about a ‘hacker’. As if all he did wrong with cheating on his wife.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  28. This resignation would have never happened without Breitbart, Patterico, Aaron and Lee, and the bornfree whistleblowers. I don’t think Fox had that much impact. The Wiener investigation was internet-directed. All the traditional media had to do was check-in to follow your leads.

    bmertz (d77c52)

  29. There’s been some internet speculation that although he was forced to resign by house leadership, Weiner may try to run in the NY special election to gain back his old seat –and that he believes his constituents would re-elect him.

His demeanor and nothing he said in this presser refutes that theory.

    elissa (bfc104)

  30. Ailes actually told his fox news propaganda whores not to cover the Weiner story.

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  31. He’ll try to make a political comeback–his resume isn’t exactly going to make lobbying firms stand up and take notice.

    MSE (15365c)

  32. Ailes actually told his fox news propaganda whores not to cover the Weiner story.

    Comment by happyfeet

That was a very good call. this isn’t news. Weiner being huffy and claiming the mantle of defiance is not news.

He quit his job. He’s a quitter. Unlike Palin, he’s a quitter because he’s a jackass who screwed up and lied. If he hadn’t lied to America, he’d probably be OK right now. MSNBC is doing all they can to pretend that part didn’t happen, but the fact is he’s a liar, and we can’t very well be represented in Congress by people who lie like that.

But MSNBC thinks he’s taking responsibility while also noting how far out of his way he’s gone to show he’s not sorry.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  33. Weiner may try to run in the NY special election to gain back his old seat

    What?

    WHAT?

    Strangely compelling possibility.

They couldn’t just expel him at that point?

    Dustin (c16eca)

  34. MSNBC is praising this guy! Praising him! After he lied to all MSNBC viewers about a ‘hacker’.

It’s called Stockholm Syndrome, remember MSNBC is in the business of protecting D’s not grilling them and they can’t believe that one of their own is being forced to resign.

    BT (74cbec)

  35. bmertz, he is not leaving politics. At least, that’s my guess based on his speech. This isn’t a ‘leave me alone I am so sorry’. This is ‘I have pride and God on my side’. He’s going to at least try to get back into power.

I fear you are correct, but, at least, pathway back to power will be an uphill battle. Even Chris Matthews doesn’t want him anymore.

He didn’t want to resign, I think

    .

You’ve got that right Maybee. He was dragged kicking and screaming all the way to the news conference.

    bmertz (d77c52)

  36. Mark my words: more bad stuff will be uncovered… I promise you that. And it will make it impossible to be re-elected. Think big picture.

    Comment by bmertz

Exactly. It’s been annoying to see people say ‘who the hell do you think you are, I don’t recognize you as a journalist’ to the journalists who actually did their job and broke the story.

It’s twice as bad to see even a hint of this coming from a journalist who failed to do their job.

If anyone is fool enough to re-elect him they deserve what they get. He’s only going to get worse.

It’s the Lady Gagafication of politics. Enough Weiners manage to weather being a complete sleaze, and you’ll see blue state politicians actually try to create a stunt sex scandal to boost their profile.

    Comment by elissa —

    Yeah.

Though I don’t really see the comparison, since Vitter was discrete, was caught years later rather than in the act, didn’t use government facilities, didn’t try to frame his truthful accusers in a serious crime, had fessed up to his family before he was caught (thus he has some integrity left).

However, either way, the people should be able to elect who they want to represent them. I just don’t see how we can trust Weiner with an office or access to a gym or a blackberry without some serious protections and especially law enforcement looking into his accounts to see what he sent to the kids.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  54. Weiner doesn’t have control of all of his photos or all of his message transcripts. Running for something without knowing what will crop up when will be tricky.

I suspect if Vitter’s prostitute had control of pictures of him in his diaper, he’d still be senator.

    MayBee (081489)

  55. He would NOT still be senator.

    MayBee (081489)

  56. Sarah- did he really say so he could heal from the damage he’s caused?

    MayBee (081489)

  57. Running for something without knowing what will crop up when will be tricky.

Yeah, one of his problems is that he’s too stupid to have a competent affair. 100X the risk. All the shame. But all his gratification came over the internet, which seems lame. He’s no less a cheater than Bill Clinton or Mark Sanford.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  58. yup he said so he could heal

I think he has to go the ngo route now – maybe some sort of save-the-medicare group to scare senior citizens

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  59. I think he’s definitely less a cheater than Bill Clinton Mr. Dustin. Tweetersex just isn’t the same as actually having for reals sex. If it were then everyone would be doing it.

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  60. He can heal.

    @SarahW
I am disgusted at his absolute narcissism, and his rejection of responsibility for the damage he has done to a minor girl. But not surprised.

    bmertz (d77c52)

  61. When news of the resignation broke this morning, I saw Chuck Todd on NBC say this: “Democrats believed they were gaining traction until this Weiner mess exploded.”

  62. I think he’s definitely less a cheater than Bill Clinton Mr. Dustin. Tweetersex just isn’t the same as actually having for reals sex. If it were then everyone would be doing it.

    Comment by happyfeet

If Weiner was telling the truth that he deceived his wife, then he is a cheater. It’s a binary issue. If you lie about it to your spouse, you’re a cheater.

I don’t operate on Jimmy Carter or Sex and the City rules. If you can admit to your wife that you find other women attractive, but honestly live up to exclusivity, you’re not a cheater. Carter was a moron about that. And if you go after women, but fail to have intercourse, you’re a totally cheater.

Weiner being this graphic, sharing pictures and wishes to gag women with his penis? That’s just as bad as Clinton and Lewinsky when it comes to the act of infidelity.

Sure, the risks to the mistress are far less, thankfully. But the betrayal is the same.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  63. OK since nobody got my joke above….

He’s announcing for President and Eric Holder is his running mate…

    Paul (59d3fd)

  64. Weiner was an unprincipled, arrogant, loud-mouth psychotic bully who perversely enjoyed pushing people around almost as much as he revelled in the media spotlight. He savaged his political opponents at every opportunity, lied to the people, the press, his constituents, and his colleagues, played Simon Lagree to his own staff – screamed at them in public, and used his position in Congress to pursue young girls in order to boost his sick ego.

Anthony Weiner is a thoroughly sub-standard human being and a man unfit to represent Americans in any forum. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Go away, Weiner, and don’t come back.

    ropelight (26edd8)

  65. please note, the open thread on the presser didn’t disappear. i just re-titled it and moved it up.

so all your commentary has been preserved.

  66. I admire the restraint of the men in the Colmes video segment. I would have the strong urge to ask Colmes if his acceptance of liars in office was due to his personal allegiance to Cthulhu. You have to admit no person in possesion of a soul looks as much like a Skeksis as Colmes does.

  67. Weiner will run for pres with Eric Holder as VP

    The weiner-holder ticket.

    DohBiden (15aa57)

  68. It is my job, too, to cultivate the sort of community where people want to join in the fun. And no matter how many times I tell them so, the same 20-30 problem commenters don’t seem to understand that particularly nasty comments do not, in fact, make other people want to join in the fun.

    He’s right.

I mean, I get why blogs like this and Althouse let the mad-dogs like Kman or whoever stay. They want a very very strong support for any idea being expressed, since that’s all a discussion thread is.

But damn if it gets out of hand, it’s impossible to have a nice conversation. I read Ace’s blog at least 3x more than I read this one, but I comment here because the threads are more coherent.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  69. Wrong thread!

    Ugh.

    /kills self

    Dustin (c16eca)

  70. Alan Colmes didn’t freak out. Agree or disagree, he made a coherent point: that politicians should only have to resign for illegal behavior.

Now I think promiscuity is part of the natural panoply of human behaviors: some are more or less monogamous, some are more or less promiscuous, and some are more or less asexual. I don’t consider any of the above to be “moral” issues. They’re just all part of a range of natural behaviors for primates, mammals, and other sexual species.

And even I think Alan Colmes goes way too far with his position. But it’s a logical position, and he didn’t freak out.

    Random (543d30)

A slander from Weiner is a good thing to have.

That’s about bang-on, bmertz! Extremely well put.

Some of the women love the banter, I’ll point out.

It’s funny that Breitbart considers Ace’s the best comments on the web. But they do get rowdy, and Breitbart is a pretty rowdy rough-and-tumble kind of guy so that makes sense.

As for the head-bloggers at each, Patterico and ace have their strong points. Patterico is very meticulous, and ace is a genius humorous writer who is very insightful.

Push comes to shove, I think ace makes me LOL way more, and is better in poltical analysis; but politics ain’t Patterico’s main beat. Both blogs are pretty good in their own way.

Now we know why the House bigs are so pissed at Weiner and the poo finally hit the fan over the weekend. It’s because he took pictures of himself inside the gym thus exposing another of their secret little perks– courtesy of the American taxpayer.

  100. Maybe our resident expert Glorious could fill us in on the psychology behind that nonsense.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  101. @ Pat,

Is this a co-ed gym or is there a separate taxpayer subsidized gym for the lady congresspersons?

Apparently while currently a co-ed gym, it hasn’t always been,

The congressional gyms were once genuine boys’ clubs. The pool used to be male-only, and there were separate workout facilities for men and women. Rep. Bella Abzug fought successfully to integrate the pool in the 1970s. In 1982, first-term Rep. Barbara Boxer led a successful push to open the men’s gym to women, since the women’s facility was nothing more than “ten hair dryers and a ping pong table.”

It’s really surprising that it wasn’t until 1982 that it became co-ed…and seriously, hair dryers and ping pong tables???

  102. Speaking of parents: You know, I haven’t seen an article or a TV segment about Weiner’s parents. No camping out on their lawn, no ambush interviews in the grocery store, no asking neighbors about their values, no checking in with Weiner’s rabbi or former school teachers. Now that I think about it, pretty much nada. I’m really surprised that the media couldn’t find them to ask how they feel about all this tweeting business.

Oh wait, the reporters were all up in Alaska, weren’t they? Never mind. Forget I mentioned it.

  103. Weiner’s parents mus be very proud to have their son represent the values their imparted to him in such a spectacular and public fashion.

  104. I don’t know if the tone is all that different.

I mean, sure there are the crazy comments, but mostly I ignore those. The smart people at Ace’s blog are pretty similar to those here, but it’s just very rare that a many leveled conversation with many different people will happen. It would take far too much work to read that while filtering out the static. So basically you have a series of people writing their little post on the topic, a bunch of jokes, a small number of short backs and forths, and then rarely a liberal troll bashing. There have been times the bloggers will lead a discussion. That happens regularly, I suppose, but there just aren’t that many commenter conversations like there are here.

And I think most of the commenters there aren’t much different from most here. It’s just a lot of static.

  105. Dustin,I stand somewhat corrected. I was unaware who Ginger Lee was in regards to the Weiner scandal. She is kinda nasty, and a little less than wonderful(I’m trying to be charitable). I checked out her demographics on the net, YIKES!!!

    Padparadscha (70f08e)

  106. I would like to somewhat amend the prior statement. Though she may be nasty, as well as Mr. Weiner, they are still Gods’ children and capable of great good. The potential is their. Some of the choices they have both made, certainly were not good, but still and all..

The hecklers made it worth the watch!

They gave it the tone that Weiner deserves.

It’s amusing that Fox News in one of its airings of the press conference bleeped some non-obscene words (“7 inches”) spouted by the wiseacre from Howard Stern. Weiner’s narcissism was not just a facet of his, of course, bloated ego, it also apparently was an off-shoot of his homosexualized fascination with his own body.

    Mark (411533)

  108. I thought it was revealing that the left accused Breitbart of sending the hecklers to Weiner’s presser, because naturally, that is what they do to conservatives at their press conferences and speeches. D’oh!

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  109. How did I miss this story

When Weiner (D-Queens, Brooklyn) was photographed by the Daily News fleeing the Capitol in his Nissan Pathfinder, it was clear the July 2007 registration sticker in his window was expired, and there was no inspection sticker to be seen. Weiner, through a staffer, said the 1988 Nissan Pathfinder was registered in New York State.
Not so, said the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
The New York license plate bolted on Weiner’s Pathfinder – US Congress 9 – had expired as of 2006, according to the DMV.

More of this law for thy and not for me

  110. #WEINING!

    Unka Billy (8096f2)

  111. That really hurt. @%&*$+X###^%@!!!!

I didn’t mean boring lol. I’m not labeling you as a group of old geezers. Quite the opposite. Both sites have interesting, intelligent and very funny people. I think the larger number of comments make it more time consuming to keep up with anyone having a discussion. So, conversation is more fragmented.

    bmertz (d77c52)

  112. “I didn’t mean boring lol.”

bmertz – I know that. There are plenty of folks here who can tell dic jokes and talk about knuckle babies, boobs, hitting that, etc., with the best of them. Speaking for myself, I usually wind up ducking a flurry of Jimmy Choos, hiking boots and other items flying through my computer screen when I venture too far down that road.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  113. Without the goofy joking I think everyone would lose the heart to push on in the face of the political dragons we face. So, thank goodness for humor; it takes us past many a rough patch and keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously. I look for people or something to read that makes me laugh. It keeps things in perspective.

    bmertz (d77c52)

  114. bmertz – You just need to put this weiner business behind you and enjoy yourself.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  115. *Coughs*I think I prefer to keep any Weiner business in full sight and at a safe distance.
