Source: Weiner Considering Resignation

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:01 pm

The New York Daily News reports:

As a cache of embarrassing new photos appeared Sunday, Rep. Anthony Weiner finally began considering the possibility that he may have to resign.

A source close to the congressman told the Daily News that Weiner had been adamant about keeping his seat – even as the Democratic leadership urged him to quit amid daily new revelations of reckless sexting.

But the unrelenting media coverage, the demands he step down from his party’s leadership, and the appearance of more humiliating photos made Weiner realize he may not be able to bull through the crisis after all, the source said.

TMZ published a new slew of squirm-inducing self-portraits, including several full-body shots taken in the House gym – some clothed, some not.

Several show Weiner showing off his naked body holding only his camera and his privates.

More pathetic details at the link.

  1. Finally !!! I bet he knows it’s because even more devastating photos and info about his interactions with underage girls are coming.

  2. Grilled Weiner; Roasted Weiner; Weiner in Hot Water—all of those have been used before.

But after seeing this series of shots–according to my daughter in England the tabloids there are showing Weiner with an erect membrum virile holding up a gym towel at 90 degrees–all that I can say about Weiner is he has a lot of pulled pork.

  4. “A source close to the congressman…” At this point, I am guessing that is Weiner himself. Unless his d*ck has its own Blackberry.

  5. I’m pretty sure he will resign…

Conservatives need to start preparing for the post-resignation spin where people start sympathizing with Weiner and start attacking the “moralists”.

Two things need to be said in the event of an early resignation: he probably save the Seattle gal and the high school girls a lot of trouble… and that we still don’t know and probably won’t know the full extent of his activities.

  6. This is not new news, it was reported yesterday that he was considering resigning but wanted to discuss with his wife on her return on Wednesday from her trip.

Note For Congressman Weiner: (you know he’s reading)

Don’t think of it as the end, but rather the beginning of a promising career at MSNBC.

  11. This has changed the face of candidate recruitment and job interviews in general. Have you ever weinertweeted a college student? Porn star? High school girl? Ever posed naked at work? If yes to any, what type of dick phot management skills do you use, or plan on using?

  17. From the posted article:

Staffers say they expect he won’t decide what to do until after his wife comes home Wednesday.

Patterico, you are correct about the media trying not to cover this story. New developments with the contact between Weiner and the minor and today’s drop of more pictures.

I don’t see much coverage today in the main stream media on this story, maybe they waiting for his mentor, Sen. Chuck Schumer to call for him to resign.

  21. Big Government is reporting that his staff is departing, en masse.

BigGovernment has learned from a confidential source on Capitol Hill that, starting tomorrow, Rep. Weiner’s DC staff will depart for other Congressional offices. According to our source, staff from Democrat leadership assembled Rep. Weiner’s staff and offered to assist them finding positions in other offices. Finding positions for everyone in Weiner’s DC office could take a week or two.

  22. Big Gov: Weiner might not resign, but his staff might…

According to our source, staff from Democrat leadership assembled Rep. Weiner’s staff and offered to assist them finding positions in other offices. Finding positions for everyone in Weiner’s DC office could take a week or two.

“Leadership said they understood that the staff had been lied to,” our source told BigGovernment. “But, they appreciated that the staff had been troopers and wouldn’t be left without jobs. They also made it clear that they didn’t think Rep. Weiner would be back in Congress.”

Rep. Weiner may not resign his congressional seat, but it may resign from him.

  23. oops. Didn’t see Rusty Bill’s at 6:49 pm…

  24. It’s kind of a shame that Weiner is resigning since his presence has shut up most of the Democratic leadership. There is no benefit to the conservatives from his leaving except for the general tone of Washington which was last seen dropping into a hole in 1968.

    Mike K (8f3f19)

  25. Given the state of the economy, I understand Weiners reluctance to resign. I am sure he foresees that in the not too distant future he will be staring balefully over the counter of a McDonalds in Texas asking, “Do you want fries with that, you jackass?”

  33. What?! Wiener is considering resigning? How will we survive with out this immature adolescent in the public eye? (Immature even for an adolescent)

It takes a smart person to be really truly stupendously blindingly stupid.

    Quasimodo (0169d1)

  34. Passing over for the moment the deep weirdness and immorality of this stuff, we still have a question:
Weiner isn’t stupid in most areas. He knows to come in out of the rain. He cannot not have known this might blow up on him. Yet his compulsion was so strong as to override the quite obvious fact that he was going to be caught eventually, and probably sooner rather than later.
The one possibility is that he knows for a fact that a huge number of folks–those would be in his circle, which is to say dem politicians and their hangers-on–are doing it and not getting caught.
So either he is really, really driven to pass over a legitimate concern–getting caught–or he has a legitimate beef. “Crap. Why me?” I’d be interested in finding out whether h thought he had, as a matter of looking around at his peers, a reasonable prospect of getting away with this.

    Richard Aubrey (cafc94)

  35. “and the appearance of more humiliating photos made Weiner realize he may not be able to bull through the crisis after all, the source said”

Is that “bull” a typo, or a Kinsleyan gaffe?

    Federal Dog (7d267b)

  36. He might think his peers are sending junk pictures and not getting caught, but I really don’t think most are sending pictures of their little pony collections over twitter. There might be canoodling et cetera – but more discretion at the very least.

    SarahW (af7312)

  37. SarahW
If I follow your view, Weiner knew various folks getting away with something, although something not as screwy as his thing. Therefore, according to his view of how things went, he should be able to get away with it, too.
But you presume others’ things weren’t as weird and were done with more discretion.
So Weiner’s view was that he wasn’t all that far out of the existing weird league and so he should get by as they do.
But he was really in a different weirdness universe, which he didn’t know, and the rules governing his acquaintances’ impunity were not going to cover him.

    That right?
    Sounds good to me.

    Richard Aubrey (cafc94)

  38. All this verbage over what caused him to do it. Face it he is just another self inflated democratic, over privledged jerk. Who probably still thinks his s$%t doesn’t stink. Push on until he’s gone.
We’ve put up with arrogant a$$holes like this for far too long in our political class.
We also need to make sure he has No pension or staff paid for by government when he finally gets the boot. Same for Silky Pony Edwards, Ensign and all the scurrilous scumbags that waste the taxpayers dime by chasing skirts.

As ever, the jokes keep writing themselves here.

A long, long time ago, I was in Cancun walking through one of those street souvenir markets. One of the Mayan Mexican dudes selling stuff had a cool rap – “you like my junk?” It’s all I can hear when I see these photos. Say it in a faux Mexican accent – it’s fun.

  48. The Daily News article stated that Weiner is convinced Huma won’t divorce him and he has told people that she wants him to fight to stay in Congress.

Um, Anthony’s said a lot of other stuff that has not necessarily ended up being true. And, we also now know what a high opinion he has of himself. We have yet to hear directly from Huma even about the pregnancy announcement. The more I think about this I think it is obvious Huma is distancing herself from this mess. She being painted in the media as a trouper and a pro traveling abroad with Hillary in the midst of a personal crisis. But if Huma had wanted and needed to stay home, or rush home to comfort Anthony and help him get through this I bet Hillary would have understood and excused her from the trip.

I also think that those who try to draw conclusions about Hillary having stood by her horndog hubby to use as a template that Huma will too, are missing the boat. Hillary, after all, was married to the President of the United States and had been with him for two decades. Along with Chelsea, being part of a presidential family carried perks for life no matter how successful one may be in ones own right. Huma, on the other hand, has been married to a 3rd rate congressmen with no other discernible skills and a bleak political future for less than a year. You do the math.
