Question About That Dan Wolfe Interview

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:06 pm

When I read FilmLadd’s interview with Dan Wolfe, one thing about their talk raised questions in my mind.

But before I go into them, I think it’s very important to explain why it could matter. Why would all of this matter? I concluded last night, after reading the FilmLadd interview, that Patriot was who he said he was. But then Lee Stranahan appeared in comments sounding very certain that he has information, not yet revealed, that will show he is right about all this. So I’m back to being agnostic. I’m going to ask questions and let it all play out.

And while I am asking the questions, I want to address the important issue of why it could matter. So let me start with by taking issue with the analysis of the one guy whom Patriot termed a genius on all of this — Ace of Spades — and suggest that Ace’s analysis is not necessarily correct.

So we’re all interested in PatriotUSA76 for only one real reason: Did he do a hack?

That’s the only real way that PatriotUSA76 becomes relevant as regards Weiner’s guilt. If PatriotUSA76 did not just monitor and stalk Weiner’s account, but actually hacked it, then PatriotUSA76 is very relevant.

If he didn’t hack it, he’s irrelevant. Maybe there’s an interesting story here about a campaign tracker, and I’d like to read that story, sure, but that story is irrelevant to Weiner’s guilt.

A tracker doesn’t get him off.

Only a hacker gets him off.

So: Was there a hack? Let’s begin with the question we’re trying to answer. Because we actually can answer it.

I don’t see how you get around the fact that if Weiner doesn’t call the cops, that means he knows there’s no hacker.

This is like Poker. You know your opponent’s cards through his behavior.

You can’t see his cards, but he can see his cards, and you can see the bets he’s placing and his demeanor.

From his behavior and bets, one card Anthony Weiner is NOT holding is the “Hacker” card.

Right?

If he held the Ace of Hack, or the King of Hack, or even the Deuce of Hack, he’d play it and call the FBI.

I love Ace, but his analysis has a gaping hole big enough to drive a truck through. Patriot could have hacked Weiner’s Twitter and Weiner would be behaving the same way — if the information Patriot had was information that Weiner didn’t want the FBI looking into.

Isn’t that obvious? Weiner’s behavior shows that he doesn’t want the FBI looking into all this. That much is obvious. But is it obvious that the only possible reason is because he sent the picture? What if he didn’t send the picture — but the picture is evidence of something else that he is trying to hide, like an affair? [UPDATE: Or, that he sends these kinds of pictures out to young girls all the time?] Wouldn’t he behave the same way?

I submit Weiner’s behavior shows he’s guilty, but we’re not entirely certain of what. And that is where Patriot comes in. His behavior, as the person who broke the story of the tweet of the picture, and as someone who seemed to have foreknowledge of the picture, may or may not shed light on what Weiner is guilty of: sending out a picture of his shorts, or something else.

So the questions are worth asking.

I found this part of the interview interesting:

Filmladd (4:49:08 PM) [asking a question from Ace]: “How did he know that a “top 5 blogger” had some sex scandal on Weiner, two weeks before this incident? I know he says it was a retweet; but what did he know of this? Who floated this, and did he have further details about it? If no details, what did he suspect?”

danwolfe7676 (4:49:48 PM): A rumor came floating around the net and I am actualy surprised more people didn’t get it

danwolfe7676 (4:50:02 PM): I don’t know where the original source was

danwolfe7676 (4:50:15 PM): It got forwarded of a forward of a forward of a forward to me

Does anyone know what he’s talking about? I never heard any such rumor. Did any of you — before Mike Stack and Dan Wolfe started talking about it?

One more thing. That Smoking Gun article about Mike Stack contains the following passage:

Stack also contended that while he sent out the May 5 tweet first hinting that a “big time” Congressman was about to be ensnared in a sex scandal, he claimed that Wolfe actually provided him that information. Wolfe, Stack said, told him that he had heard the rumor from a source who worked for a well-known conservative web site.

After Stack sent out the initial tweet, Wolfe quickly ran with the rumor, attributing it–“via@goatsred”–to his online buddy. In retweets, Wolfe immediately attached Weiner’s name to the rumor, wondering “@RepWeiner are you this Congressman?” Stack did not have an explanation as to why Wolfe sought to launder the rumor through him.

If Stack is telling the truth — which we don’t know — then Wolfe wanted to disguise his status as the provenance of the rumor. Why would that be? Because he didn’t want people asking him questions about where he got his information, I would assume.

Maybe it’s just because he’s paranoid. I don’t know. Is that why Wolfe deleted his entire Twitter account yesterday? I don’t know. It was considered to be suspicious when the woman in Seattle deleted hers. Her proffered explanation was privacy; Wolfe’s no doubt would be as well. Do we know? I don’t know.

Lee Stranahan has hinted in comments here that he has information yet to come to light. What is that? Again, I don’t know. But last night Stranahan published this mysterious post on his site accusing Wolfe of dishonesty:

But here’s my short response, directly to Patriot – you lied to people who considered you a friend and then you threw them under the bus to take the fall for your own long-term resentment towards Rep. Weiner. That’s not cool. man.

Wonder what he’s talking about there?

There is enough here of interest that I am going to wait it out and see what Lee comes up with. I know only one thing: none of this lets Weiner off the hook. Not by a longshot. There is NO WAY that his behavior is consistent with that of an innocent person. He’s guilty, all right.

The interesting question is: of what?

UPDATE: I’m starting to think that the heart of the Weiner scandal lies in Tommy Christopher piece about Patriot’s buddy, goatsred aka Mike Stack, who contacted girls who said they had compromising DMs from Weiner. Christopher says that one of them (“Veronica,” whose real name is out there on the Internet; I know it) “admits” she had lied to Stack.

Admits? Or claims?

How do we know she wasn’t telling the truth to goatsred/Stack?

How do we know goatsred, and Patriot, didn’t get that picture from these girls?

We don’t.

And SarahW points out something very telling in the comments:

As an aside about that being “lies, all lies..”

It struck me this am that Betty and her parents, now insisting that Betty received only a “welcome” DM from Weiner, implied something more than that type of message or correspondence with Weiner when she was first followed.

It was a tweet she made that really piqued the interest of DW and MS –

@[Betty]: seriously talking to Rep Weiner from New York right now! is my life real? [UPDATE BY PATTERICO: This may not be “Betty.” See below.]

(above taken from @TommyXtophers copy of DW’ twitter stream and DW’s retweet of @[Betty]‘s tweet)

Ok. To me That sounds more conversatin’ than “Welcome to my twitter stream” followed by eternal crickets; and I would guess if announced on twitter, she was DMing back and forth with him, though email or phone or other method is always possible.

The real scandal here may turn out to be that Rep. Anthony Weiner has been tweeting pictures of his erect penis to numerous women. Not just one.

UPDATE x2: Christopher is claiming on Twitter that the above tweet is not Betty. Whether he is protecting his source, a young girl, or telling the truth, I don’t know. I would generally not accuse him of lying, but given his feelings about protecting young girls, I can imagine him lying about this if he thought he was protecting his source.

UPDATE x3: I am willing to accept what Christopher has said regarding that quote not being a quote from “Betty.”

  3. If Wolfe is a hacker, his day in court will follow. Unless……………

Weiner continues to try to avoid having to a)involve the FBI in an investigation that has become a national security issue or b)fesses up that he sent the picture and that no one really hacked into his account.

I don’t see b happening. Weiner obviously has more to hide and so you have one slug possibly protecting another slug so that the first slug suffers less damage than he already has. I mean, come on now, how many men don’t know if a photo of someone’s aroused package is him or not?

The primary objective should be watching Weiner fess up as he gives his farewell speech. Once he does that, and then turns this over to the FBI, any potential hacker will then be of interest. Until then, to concentrate on the if, come and maybe that Wolfe is a hacker slug, is secondary.

  7. but the whole rumor thing amounted to nothing

what happened was Huma’s husband sent out a picture of his erect penis to a college girl in the middle of finals

The rumor was an irrelevancy. There was no throwing under the bus.

After he was busted sending out his notorious weinertweets, Huma’s husband hired some douchebags at the douchebag firm of Baker Hostetler.

And bam what happens next? An unsigned article appears at the website of a CNN sister company trashing Mr. Stack. They just used the rumor thing as a pretext to kick up dirt.

This is what the expensive douchebags Huma’s husband hired at the douchebag firm of Baker Hostetler are trained to do.

Well duh. And I submit that if Patriot knows Weiner is guilty of much more (as many of us commenting here this week also suspect and have often said) then Patriot if given a chance will manage to get it out there in his own way and in his own time. The real scandal here may turn out to be that Rep. Anthony Weiner has been tweeting pictures of his erect penis to numerous women. Not just one.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  44. I’m sorry, but what evidence does anyone have that Dan Wolfe hacked Wiener’s account? None? Something Lee has but won’t share? If Dan never hacked the account and has no part in the “hack”, it doesn’t matter who he/she/it is or what he/she/it said in a tweet weeks ago. What I find amazing is that Lee is continuing down a road based on nothing more than what appears to be conjecture without any hard evidence that Dan played a bigger role in framing Wiener.

Furthermore, why is everyone acting as though this convoluted theory has any more validity than the simplest of explanations? That Wiener sent the tweet, he discovered his mistake, stepped in it big time claiming to have been hacked and won’t involve the authorities because they’ll know in a New York minute it was his IP that sent the tweet?

    Sean (ff2f3b)

  45. I think that Anthony continues to use his twitter account after it was hacked tells you that he knows it wasn’t hacked.

    He’s a liar.

  46. The real scandal here may turn out to be that Rep. Anthony Weiner has been tweeting pictures of his erect penis to numerous women. Not just one.

If that was true, don’t you think the press would already have one or more of these women?

    rcade (c8bc33)

  47. Patriot RT’d the tweet, he says, using the “old fashioned” method of copying the tweet, typing “RT” at the front and then copying the tweet text.

He says he did this because the “new fashioned” RT method of clicking the “Retweet” button didn’t work, because the source tweet has already been deleted on AW’s timeline.

    Do I have this correct?

Is this the sole piece of evidence that this tweet ever happened? I’m seriously asking, because I don’t know.

Did others see this? Because frankly if this is the case, I can type anything into a Twitter box, put “RT” in front of it and claim I saw it “briefly” in my timeline.

Please tell me other people saw this tweet, and not just DW’s retweet of it.

    Pious Agnostic (6048a8)

  48. Or, Weiner could be trying to hide something related to something damaging to him self, and his wife. His wife, Huma Abedin, is the daughter of, a woman tied to Al Qaeda, she has cousins, uncles, and I believe a brother who are involved with Al Qaeda. She, a woman without any personal wealth, on a salary as Hillary Clinton’s body woman, that was less than #36k per year, managed to purchase an extremely expensive property in one of the most expensive neighborhoods of DC, that was over $860K several years before she even started dating Weiner. There have been demands for disclosure, given her family’s ties to terrorists and wealthy Muslims who are the same people who funded the 9/11 terrorists.

Weiner is extremely anti-American, and I could well see him being willing to be on the take by the same terrorists. It could also explain why Huma Abedin Weiner is herself looking a bit nervous… because if she’s been doing what many have suspected her of doing, she’d be incarcerated for a long, long time, hopefully with her rat bastard husband, and it might lead to a long overdue investigation into her slimey boss, Hill the pill Clinton.

    Mary (090eb0)

  49. Didn’t the girl who said she was “talking’ with Weiner also tweet that married men were a turn on?

    MayBee (081489)

  50. How do we know goatsred, and Patriot, didn’t get that picture from these girls?

Wait a minute, so the theory now is that Dan Wolfe retweeted a non tweet and doctored Wiener’s yfrog page and that Wiener never tweeted the picture everyone is now familiar with? Why then would Wiener tweet he was hacked and deleted his yfrog photos? If he was hacked what evidence does anyone have that Dan or Stack did it? This seems like the men y’all are proclaiming to be idiots seem to have pulled off a brilliant plan. Sounds a lot like lefties claiming Bush planned 9-11 on Monday and telling everyone he’s an idiot on Tuesday. Which is it? They’re not very bright men that have no relationship with Wiener, but are able to pull off a hack that yfrog claims wasn’t a hack and Twitter won’t confirm and Wiener won’t investigate. Or were they Wiener stalkers (never thought I’d write that) that happened upon a mistake by the congressman than validated what they were investigating?

I still think the simplest explanation is correct. This was Wiener, all Wiener, and Dan just happened to be an obsessed Twitterer in the right place to catch him with his pants down.

    Sean (ff2f3b)

  51. If that was true, don’t you think the press would already have one or more of these women?

If they exist, you think they’re all lining up to come forward, do you?

Betty and Veronica apparently started to come forward and backed off. That, or they wanted to make themselves famous and admitted that they were lying, which is Tommy Christopher’s claim that I am quizzing him about right now on Twitter.

  63. My latest position was that Wolfe is just who he said he was. But Lee claims to have more and sounds confident. I’ll wait to see what that is, and explain why it could matter if he’s right. That’s all.

If I have a “theory” it is simply that this is not the first time Weiner has sent such a picture before.

    Patterico (135ea8)

  64. Just for the record, after insinuating that someone was gay, the sign of a tolerant leftiast, Yelverton then continued his gender-bending cross dressing, called me a sexist, then accused me of selling cocaine to school children. Step away from the hooch, skin flute racist midget hilljack.

    JD (85b089)

  65. Patterico- I don’t know for sure who Betty and Veronica are, but Daily Caller puts the “Is my life real?” tweet in the words of a girl with initials MH.

Her Twitter page is gone now, too.

  66. How is patriotperson any more obsessive or Krazy than William Yelverton, imdw, timmah, etc ?

    JD (b98cae)

  67. I’m just glad they didn’t have twitter during Plamegate, or I would have been camped out on Joe Wilson’s page. I would have been the creepiest stalker ever.

    MayBee (081489)

  68. If they exist, you think they’re all lining up to come forward, do you?

Weiner’s weiner was front-page news for a week. When Tiger Woods got this kind of treatment the women he was banging came out all over the place. If he was sending his junk to women on Twitter to flirt with them, I would expect some of them to be happy to talk to reporters in this any-attention-is-good age we’re living in.

I think the key fact here is that an extremely dodgy Twitter user was the only one to see the tweet and respond to it. That user’s subsequent actions put more suspicion on him. His association with another Twitter user who has allegedly been stalking people makes it look even more suspect.

Is Weiner hiding something? Probably. But I don’t believe he sent a dick tweet and “Dan Wolfe” just found it. Something more complicated is going on.

    rcade (c8bc33)

  69. Oh no, MH still has her twitter page.

    MayBee (081489)

  70. …and *poof*, just like that, opal is gone.

That’s funny… I think all the Plamegate players are happy there wasn’t Twitter back then. These new-fangled technologies essentially just give public people more rope to hang themselves with. And they just can’t resist.

  71. BS, rcade. Occam says weiner weinertweeted a college girl.

  72. grab somebody sexy tell em hey

wanna follow me on tweeter? I show you my penis!

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  73. Lee’s instincts and ethical approach to reporting(see Pigford)leads me to trust him here.

Why this keeps bothering me: Remember, Weiner said he deleted pictures (note the multiple). Could there be more of these pictures out there? Is this really the first DM photo he has fired off? Were the girls telling the truth then or now?

Thinking deeper. “Thinking of a mystery.” 😉

  74. ok now turn to the right and lean back a little

  75. Stranahan has to put up or shut up. Enough is enough.

    East Coast Chris (c31a9b)

  76. The girl that tweeted about talking to Weiner is still on twitter and isn’t Betty or Veronica. I’m now going to read some Archie comics.

    Joseph (f00357)

  77. Is the girl who asks her about his follow either Betty or Veronica? She’s now off Twitter.

    MayBee (081489)

  78. @[Betty]: seriously talking to Rep Weiner from New York right now! is my life real? [UPDATE BY PATTERICO: This may not be “Betty.” See below.]

if ‘Betty” is MH – this is a quote from her. I read her entire Twitter feed last Sunday before she briefly took it down.

    Jane (84c5f6)

  79. But Weiner was following MH, another girl (starts with @Star) jumps right in to ask her about it as soon as she mentions it.

Anyway, Weiner “talked” to this MH girl, so it is obviously something he’ll do. She was sad when he unfollowed her.

    MayBee (081489)

  80. I concur. I think this has to do with underage girls. It makes no difference whether or not the picture was sent by AW at this point. The attention is now squarely on his Twitter account. I think it is very odd that ANY HS girl find this man remotely interesting let alone as many as appear to be. These two tweets from him don’t make me less concerned. http://twitter.com/#!/RepWeiner/status/69020628388290560 http://twitter.com/#!/RepWeiner/status/69763496878948353
In my opinon, the reasons Weiner wouldn’t want police involvement isn’t his wife…or even his job. (either of those can be fixed) What couldn’t be fixed is something criminal. (just my theory based on all I have seen)
Also, I think it’s obvious Tommy has never been a teenage girl. I asked him right away the same q’s. Why exactly do you believe the girls now? Because the protective parents tell you to? Riiiight.
Also, what is up with all these “journalists” saying they have “proof” they can’t share? What’s stopping you? You haven’t let anything ethical stop you thus far so what it the reason now?

    Sleuth (786412)

  81. can this marriage be saved?

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  82. Betty can’t be MH – MH is still up and I have to say, her parents must not monitor her Twitter page – she is a pretty little girl but foul mouthed. That was all I could think when reading it, I hope my own daughter (who does not use Twitter) wouldn’t talk like this young lady was doing. This whole thing is ugly and sad and Weiner is disgusting, no matter WHAT he did. I am convinced he has sent his picture out there before and THAT is unbelievable!

    Jane (84c5f6)

  83. Would love to be a little mouse in the room to overhear some of the insider cocktail and dinner party gossip in DC and NYC this weekend!

    elissa (35276c)

  84. The @star_______ also asked Ginger Lee how she got a follow from Anthony Weiner.

If the @star girl was Betty or Veronica, she was very very interested in follows from Weiner.

    MayBee (081489)

  85. Weinertweets has created a cottage industry of random speculation.

    JD (85b089)

  86. weinertweets is doing to palin what palin did to romney

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  87. OK, so @star____ girl is prom date girl.
Patterico, if that’s Betty or Veronica, she asked Ginger Lee about her DM conversation w/Weiner in March, and later asked MH how she got a follow from Weiner.

So she was pretty darn interested.

If it’s not, then it’s one more high school girl.

    MayBee (081489)

  88. It has always been my position that twitter and facebook are of the devil. Nothing this week has caused me to change my evaluation.

    JD (85b089)

  89. linkedin is also a dirty whore

  90. MayBee,

    Check your email.

  91. Patteric-done

    MayBee (081489)

  92. I think this has to do with underage girls.

Bingo. It would certainly explain his reactions as the days have unfolded, and it would be the one thing that would be very difficult to worm his way out of and/or avoid some kind of prosecution. Left or right, underage girls are just that. I don’t imagine any would want to risk covering that up in this day and age.

(Also, he might be doubly panicky seeing John Edwards getting indicted this week…)

    Dana (4eca6e)

  93. Lee needs to put his cards on the table. I’ve been reading like a guy on crack the last couple of days trying to figure this out. From what I’ve seen I still think it’s the obvious answer. Weiner is a perv who sends out dic pic and he got caught. As odd as this might sound I hope it turns out he’s been sending them to underage girls as well so he really goes down in flames. As it is right now I don’t think he’ll step down over the one photo sent to an adult college student. Progs don’t have scruples.

    Johnny 5 is alive (5ccc5e)

  94. Does anyone know the circumstances of how Mick Stack got outed?

    Johnny 5 is alive (5ccc5e)

  95. Gee, I rilly, rilly hope that Dan Wolfe doesn’t get his life ruined over having tried to ruin someone’s life. I mean, is that fair? No whey. He’s fighting the good fight. Right?
This is so much bigger and better than the John Ensign affair. Just lookit the media coverage. Who’s Page One, or what?
That Weiner. I mean his name says it all. He should be ground up into sausage, or something.

    Larry Reilly (0e1b2d)

  96. I like how the JournoLister, Larry Reilly, tries to distract from Weiner’s weinertweeting to blame someone else. FU, hack. That you are a journalist should be an embarrassment to the profession.

    JD (318f81)

  97. I wouldn’t rate him any higher then stenographer.

    papertiger (e55ba0)

  98. I find that there is a propensity to call the young adult women “girls”.
Are they girls or adults ?
If everyone keeps calling them girls, or “teenagers”, I think most of us are left wondering if “pedophile” enters into the legal mix.
If they are of legal consensual age, the “girls” and “teenagers” THEME should be dropped.
We are told, it is inferred, we are led to believe, it’s all about “the law” and even “inappropriate conduct” – but then we have those on the side of “discovering the truth” and mulling over what the truth may be, spreading the “half truths” or flat out “inappropriate attacks” on The Weiner by referring to the young ladies as “girls”, “teenagers” or talking about “protecting the girls”…

So which is it fellas ? Is the women involved of legal consensual age or not ?
Any others you may have info on that are “UNDERAGE” ?

So while you’re going after “all the possible liars” – it would be nice if you curb your own bias and predjudice and use the terms “young ladies” or adult collegiate female, or whatever doesn’t continually infer and give the FALSE IMPRESSION.
    Yes ?
    Right….

    SiliconDoc (7ba52b)

  99. @ SiliconDoc from everything I’ve heard and read it’s all of the above. It’s girls as in teenagers, it’s a college student and it’s a stripper.

So people are interchanging them because they can. Granted there’s only proof that the dic pic was sent to a college student. But he was having conversations with two different minor females as well. That’s what the big argument between Kos and Mediaite was all about.

    Johnny 5 is alive (5ccc5e)

  100. Only the liberal journalist Larry Reilly can’t see that it was Congressman Weiner that ruined his own life quite well all by himself. For that Mr. Reilly thinks it would be super to have a simple citizen of the USA have his life ruined too. Nice fella, isn’t he?

    Birdbath (19803d)

  101. I gotta go with the simplest explanation-Weiner tweeted his own weenie to the comely coed.

While I certainly agree with Lee that PatriotUSA76 has a weird obsession with Rep Weiner, I’m gonna need something just a bit stronger that “Dan Wolfe is nonexistant” before I’m buying the hacked weenie theory. I’m all ears at this point, but what’s the big holdup if you’ve got a scoop, Lee? You’re talking this up like you’ve got something, we wait for it, and then…WTF?

It’s also certainly possible that Rep Weiner has some other dirt that he’d prefer to conceal, but that’s not entirely exculpatory, IMAO.
