Fake? Or Real?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:02 pm

No, not that.

This:

Of course, it could be real, with lots of editing. But if it’s not special effects, I don’t care how many takes they had to do. I’m impressed.

Via Hot Air.

  1. Ok, THAT is impressive…

  2. Yeah, there are some def. mad skilz there.

Not sure how much it translates to real gameplay, but that’ll be seen on the field next year, won’t it…?

If he’s actually THAT good, UConn should easily win the Big Least, and prob. be doing awfully well going into the bowls.

  3. Fake, definitely fake

  4. None of those shots felt fake to me. I’m certain he didn’t hit every single shot on the first try, of course, but none of those shots are out of reach for someone who sets his mind to do them. “All” you have to do is practice with a football for hours at a time, day after day, for many years, until the football feels like part of your arm. Which is evidently what Mr. McEntee has done.

  5. i was tempted to post it myself, but…

i figure it will disappear within 24 hours max, b/c of the copyrighted songs in the bg.

if he REALLY wanted to blow our minds, he would release the unedited footage. i mean there would still have to be cuts now and then, like when he goes to mess with the pizza guy.

hot air points out that he is a third stringer. so is this the case of a guy who is only good when no other players are around? or is he hidden gold that hasn’t been given enough of a chance?

  6. btw, what is the “that” you say this is not?

  7. Hey patterico I just saw a segment on Fox about the county of LA planning to hand out fliers with instructions on how to “safely” take Ecstasy at raves… of course when the public outcry came they dropped it.

Wait, no, they just made new fliers that mentioned more prominently that Ecstasy is illegal and potentially dangerous, but still here’s the “safe” way to do it.

What’s your opinion on it, if you have one? It’s ridiculous to me that on one hand the locals and the Feds have been making big busts of MDMA traffickers recently in California from what I remember reading, but here is the county (or maybe it was the city) of LA implicitly admitting that it can’t win the drug war and trying to “minimize” damage or something. If they know enough to know that Ecstasy is going to be taken at a certain venue, why not saturate it with undercover narcotics detectives instead of handing out fliers semi-encouraging drug use?

  8. I’ve seen JD make better throws than that freeballing in a kilt.

    daleyrocks (479a30)

  9. JD in a kilt? That is not something that I would want to contemplate at 8:30 in the morning. (:

  10. Lotsa edits or fake or not, who knows, but his friends never flinching was pretty impressive and said a lot about his skillz IMO.

Anybody else half-expecting a window of the SUV to open up in transit and the football go in?

I don’t know, I figure when I ask “Fake? Or real?” that certain prevoits are gonna be thinking a particular thing.

Oh: and the female Dana? Aren’t you always asking for images of attractive men? Does this qualify?

(As you know, any images of attractive persons from either sex are posted for their news value. It just so happens that most newsworthy images of attractive people are of females. I don’t make the news, I just report it.)

  12. daleyrocks, hey! I’m eating breakfast here.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  13. deepelemblues, don’t you teach your kids about safe sex? For that matter, you teach your young kids not to play with matches, but don’t you also teach them what to do if they should start a fire, or if one should “coincidentally” start just where they happen to be playing with matches? Or would you rather they remain ignorant and at risk of burning, just so as not to detract from the deterrent effect of your warning?

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  14. Okay he’s got the arm, but how do his skills translate – like when 300 plus pounds lineman is bearing down on him?

    Mike Giles (e660fb)

  15. Impressive? Yeah. But I have never seen a trick-shot athlete in any sport perform in real-game situations on a consistent basis. Period. And all those dudes doing the trick shots off of buildings and while sliding into swimming pools and stuff on YouTube make their living doing something else.

If you’ve watched the Harlem Globetrotters or the guys on the And 1 tour and ever said to yourself, “These guys are GOOD! How come they’re not in the NBA?” The answer is simple: With extremely rare exceptions, they’re not good enough. Yeah, they can do all the high-flying dunks, fancy crossovers, trick shots from half-court and stuff, but in the long run, when they have to play within a NBA coach’s system for twenty or so minutes several times a week for months on end, something doesn’t click. 11-year-veteran Jason “White Chocolate” Williams, the flashiest player in the NBA when he came up with the Sacramento Kings, didn’t get a championship ring until he took ALL the street out of his game and concentrated on fundamentals that made him boring as paste, but made him a lesser liability re turnovers.

It must be remembered that when it comes to elite athletes, NBA players have no peers. There are untold millions who play around the world, but in the NBA, there are 30 teams with rosters of 14, only five of whom play at one time. No matter your success in American colleges or international leagues (or high school), if you have an achilles heel in your game, it WILL be exposed, and your choices for playing professionally will shrink to FIBA teams, the NBA’s D-League, the Harlem Globetrotters, or even (gulp) the Washington Generals.

My thoughts about McEntee? If he was such hot schtuff after the kickoff, what’s he doing in Connecticut? The proof is in the playing. Dwight Clark, the S.F. 49er who will always be adored by fans for “The Catch” that put them in their first Super Bowl in 1982 (Five wins, no losses, Steeler fans) was given a player personnel role after his retirement. He picked a Virginia Tech QB named Jim Druckenmiller in the first round partly based on a video Druckenmiller created showing off how strong he was; at one point, he towed a station wagon tethered to him. When JaMarcus Russell was drafted by the Raiders out of LSU, people were impressed with his combine stats and stunts like being able to heave the ball 50 yards while sitting flat on the grass. He set a new record for being cut the quickest after being the overall #1 pick. Now, he’s back home, eating like a pig and getting high on fortified cough syrup.

I have a feeling going viral will be the highlight of McEntee’s career. But I’ve been wrong before.

    L.N. Smithee (3b27d7)

  16. Well… shit, Eeyore.

I suppose you’re going to tell us Santa Claus isn’t real, either.

    Leviticus (68eff1)

  17. Well… sh*t, Eeyore.

I suppose you’re going to tell us that Santa Claus isn’t real, either.

    Leviticus (68eff1)

  18. Stupid profanity moderation.

    Leviticus (68eff1)

  19. So what you’re saying is that being able to deliver the ball with precision to a specific point is a necessary, but not sufficient, part of being a good quarterback.

    Robin Munn (1bccbe)

  20. Daley – I have a cannon, but when I am freeballin’ in the tartan plaid, I can really let it fly.

Trick shots are just that, trick shots. They do not account for speed, timing, instinct, etc … Many people are incredible shooters when nobody is guarding them, catch and shoot, not winded, etc …. But could never even dream of competing with elite players. LN correctly notes that the Globetrotters and the And1 folks, while having a unique skill set, are utterly unprepared for higher level team competition. Make them shoot a 12 footer and they are done. Make them play a half court offense. Finis.

Having said all that, this was really entertaining to watch.

    JD (0d2ffc)

  21. Patterico

they contacted the player and he said, “yes, its real. and its spectacular.”

(no, not really, just a joke.)

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  22. Amen to what LN Smithee said. Spot on. Racer Alson is the only And1 type of street player that I can recall ever making it in the League, and he was average, at best. I would also agree that NBA athletes are the elite of the elite of the elite. Their combination of size, speed, strength, endurance, and unsurpassed athleticism is imply unmatched.

    JD (ae44dd)

  23. But remember, only the Harlem Globetrotters (or in a pinch the Looney Tunes gang) can successfully defeat alien space invaders who have come to subjugate our galaxy.

A slightly different skillset, I admit.

    luagha (b376b0)

  24. deepelemblues – Whatever happened to those drop-in heroin shooting galleries San Fran was planning on opening a few years ago?

    daleyrocks (479a30)

  25. NBA might be the elite of the elite of the elite, but the only reason I don’t consider basketball the most boring sport they televise is the fact that they televise baseball.

Can’t stand either game. I’d sooner watch The View than watch a baseball or basketball game.

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  26. I don’t care if it’s not real, I love it. If it’s real, I really love it.

    DRJ (fdd243)

  27. Sheesh, people, it’s not like he’s billing himself as the world’s greatest QB. It says right in big letters at the beginning of the video that he’s a TRICK SHOT Quarterback. Several of the comments seem to think he’s whining about not being taken seriously as a real game QB or something, but I don’t see that at all. Where did y’all get the idea that he (or anybody) was claiming that his trick shot ability makes him a better QB than Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, and Drew Brees all rolled together?

He’s really good at trick shots like this, and he made a video showing that. What’s wrong with doing so, and why do several people feel the need to dump on him for it?

As for the Globetrotters, yeah, there are reasons they don’t play in the NBA. But at the same time, I feel fairly certain that most Globetrotters can do things that the average NBA player can’t do on a regular and consistent basis. Does that make one better than the other? Of course not. They have different skill sets which make them better suited for different jobs.

    PatHMV (30cb03)

  28. Exactly right, PatHMV.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  29. Haven’t y’all learned by now to “follow the money”?

If they let this guy in the NFL and he uses his crazy skillz to let people in the door without paying, CLUE! They lose big money!

I don’t know nuthin about basketball, but I saw those Harlem Globe guys once (besides the cartoon, I mean) and I’m pretty sure that a bunch of the stuff they did was against the rules!!!!! If they let this guy play football, I’ll bet he’d be breaking the rules too. Knocking people’s helmets off with the football. Throwing passes from the stands.

No, this guy would be nothing but trouble.

    Gesundheit (cfa313)

  30. Why don’t you smart lawyers hire this guy? He could let in a suprise witness at a crucial moment in your trial or wrap a summons around the ball and serve people.
