L.A. Times to Correct Error on Confirmation of Judges

You will remember my first raising the issue here, and Ed Whelan providing the relevant figures here. I finally wrote the Readers’ Representative, and heard back from her today:

Mr. Frey,

I just wanted to follow up on this. The 87% figure for Bush is incorrect, and a For the Record item is planned for Friday’s paper.

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

I’ll wait to see what they say before offering further thoughts. However, it is noteworthy that Whelan said he had written the reporter himself and gotten no response or correction. It is nice to see that the institution is paying more attention than Ms. Williams. How much more attention remains to be seen, on Friday.

UPDATE: Of course, when you have judges who think sexual sadism is a mitigating factor in a murder, maybe part of the problem is bad nominees.

Perhaps the fact the bankruptcy hearings for The Tribune Co. (owner of the LA Times) are going decidely against Sam Zell and his management team, could have a few people on edge.

Nothing is more threatening than not knowing who your boss will be at the beginning of the year.

  2. Not one of these nominees is fit to be a judge, it’s not even close. The judicial record of the ones already on the bench disqualifies them from continuing in the profession, and the others are so ideologically driven as to be well outside the presumption of objective consideration.

Someone tell Obama we need some better nominees, ones that know the law and will apply it fairly.

  3. It must be tiresome to continually submit these items and get told “Thanks for letting us know about that” with no further movement on the factors that lead to the problem to begin with.

  4. Writing a shit story full of sloppy reporting is bad enough, but where does the reporter get off in not even responding to readers who write to her asking for a correction? Times editors: Why does this woman still have a job?
