MSNBC Eliminationist Rhetoric Spurs Otherwise Normal Man to Issue Death Threats Against Republican Congresswoman

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:01 am

A man has received prison for threatening a Congresswoman:

A Spring Hill man who threatened U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite during the health care debate will spend more than two years in federal prison.

Eric Lawrence Pidrman, 66, claims he was in an alcoholic blackout when he telephoned Brown-Waite’s office about 6:30 a.m. on March 25 and left a message saying he had 27 people who would make sure she “doesn’t live to see her next term.”

Rep. Virginia Brown-Waite is a Republican.  Why would an otherwise normal person attack a Republican?  Blame MSNBC:

“I’m terribly sorry that it ever happened,” Pidrman said this morning before he was sentenced. At the time of the morning he made the call, he said, “I very often watch the recycled news shows on MSNBC.”

When agents questioned Pidrman in April, he said he was upset about threats reportedly made against Democrats during the health care debate. He said he probably thought, “Let me scare one of those righties.”

Chris Matthews has a tingle up his leg and blood on his hands.  It is the blood of someone who WOULD HAVE bled, but for the fine work of law enforcement. It is blood nevertheless, and it is on his hands.  Literally.

Keith Olbermann: at long last, have you no decency?!?!

  1. Yes, Dave Weigel, I’m kidding.

  2. From the site to which Patterico linked:

Defense attorney Ronald Kurpiers asked the judge not to send Pidrman to prison. He said his client has prostate cancer, osteoarthritis and other medical problems, and has no one in his life other than his 11-year-old dog and his neighbor.

If you search on the guy’s name you can find a picture of him. He all but has “Loser” stamped on his forehead. Death threats aren’t funny and need to be taken seriously, but it’s hard to imagine this sad sack would have the initiative to do much more than rouse himself from his couch. Don’t know if this is possible, but I wonder if the judge couldn’t have saved us all money by putting this guy under house arrest and prohibiting him from watching television or surfing the Internet.

Perhaps, in deference to “International Standards”, they could commit him to treatment for his physical and mental problems to a clinic in Libya – it seems to be all the rage these days.
Barring that, could they arrainge out-patient treatment in the same neighborhood where MadCow, Chrissie Tingle, or Olberdouche live?

  5. This should not be a jailable offense.

  6. No.

  7. or prisonable, rather.

2 years for a death threat implies some kind of real seriousness, IMO. Hopefully it will get the point across that Republican congressman are people too, as hard as that is for the MSNBC cast to understand.

  8. It should not be a crime at all.

  9. So-o-o… why isn’t MSNBC being prosecuted for hate speech? Incitement?

Yes, the question is rhetorical; I KNOW why, I was just voicing the obvious. It’s just that the idea of seeing Olbermann behind bars is schadenfreude-licious.

  10. I would wonder how this stacks up re the “Stolen Valor” decision of the 9th.
If he claimed it was all a hoax, wouldn’t that, under Stolen Valor, be a 1st-A defense?
Does anyone know if he committed any act other than the phone call?
There seems to be a lot of room for possible appeals here absent an overt act.
