UFO
The “f” stands for “floating.”
Monstrous boxy-shaped object floating in front of San Nicholas Island.
Bigger than any ship I have ever seen by an order of magnitude.
I just had one glass of wine with dinner. I swear.

My kids saw it too, and their beer was A&W Root.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:03 pmThe Visitors just want lizards. Give them some.
SPQR (26be8b) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:10 pmWe have lizards to spare.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:14 pmPost a photo?

8)
redc1c4 (fb8750) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:18 pmNo photo, sorry.
I think it’s San Nicholas, yes. You disagree, native? (or should I say nativist) (or racist)?
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:21 pmPatterico’s losing it. Commenter amnesty and now this.
Whatever will he do next?
Christoph (8ec277) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:24 pmSomeone called it a mid-life crisis.
If so, it could be worse.
It could be raining.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:29 pmMaybe Patterico will join the Public Defender’s Office now
Ringo NOva (d14de5) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:34 pm“No photo, sorry.”
You didn’t have a mobile?
Christoph (8ec277) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:34 pmWho knows what the Navy is up to.
A floating temporary sub pen? That would be pretty cool.
Or perhaps this is the social security lock box I’m been hearing about? Sounds like it’s about the right size we’ll be needing.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:35 pmWas it Michael Moore out for a swim?
JD (ffe6ea) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:36 pmI’ll go with the Social Security Lock Box–its second chakra has been released and it now appears–10 years after the debate.
Mike Myers (3c9845) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:42 pmI think it’s one of the tankers of the Stromberg line
ian cormac (6709ab) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:46 pmYour system doesn’t seem to like my comments
Calfed (c9fe79) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:56 pmit might could be Chris Christie’s credibility after endorsing that Castle poofter
happyfeet (19c1da) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:57 pmDid it say “GOODYEAR” on the side?
Calfed (c9fe79) — 9/4/2010 @ 8:58 pmIt is someone’s way of “getting serious about illegal immigration”, 100,000 at a time.
Then again, ian could be correct. I looked it up. 😉
We’ll stay tuned for further developments, Orson.

ian cormac (6709ab) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:04 pmian, I found the info on the “MI6” website:

We get the blimp here many weekends. If that was it, it had crashed and assumed a boxy rectangular shape.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:22 pm“I’ll go with the Social Security Lock Box”
It could be Hillary’s testicle lock box if the thing is really ginormous. That thing is bigger than the Social Security Lock Box.
daleyrocks (940075) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:37 pmI saw Chicago floating upside down in the sky over Lake Michigan, once. Mirage. The air can become like a mirrored prism.
Or … just what is that brand of wine you were drinking? 😉
nk (db4a41) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:37 pmPatterico – Are the Chinese coming to repossess America? I don’t mind them starting with California.
daleyrocks (940075) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:40 pmMaybe a floating dry dock
But it’s probably really that social security lock box. Smart guys they were, pretending we didn’t keep one so we’d just find it in our national coat pocket, like that $20 bill I found last week.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:41 pmIt may have been the Borg mothership coming to take Harry and Nancy home.
Ag80 (2f74a7) — 9/4/2010 @ 9:48 pmCould it be the Baby Ruth bar from Caddyshack???
reff (176333) — 9/4/2010 @ 10:01 pmMidnight, eel shushi, and two glasses of Chardonnay. No UFOs. Dang, some people have all the luck.
nk (db4a41) — 9/4/2010 @ 10:07 pmAl Gore…got dark, missed the last wave in.
PC14 (4a4ed3) — 9/4/2010 @ 10:11 pmMaybe the crate our last aircraft carrier came in. Someone forgot to recycle it.

— I think you were seeing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.
Icy Texan (c067d2) — 9/5/2010 @ 3:22 am“Al Gore…got dark, missed the last wave in.”
It would be snowing if he was there too.
daleyrocks (940075) — 9/5/2010 @ 5:31 amPerhaps Paul Conrad’s coffin, so bitter and tasteless that not even the dirt of the cemetary could accept it?
Mike (9f035a) — 9/5/2010 @ 6:54 amThe “f” stands for “floating.”
Beyond an instance like that, whenever people start talking about seeing a “UFO” and the media reports it, I always wanna ask, so do think the object was non-terrestrial or not? The only thing that makes “UFO” seem interesting to me is if it doesn’t appear to involve secret experimental technology from the military. Although I guess that can be interesting too.
It may have been the Borg mothership coming to take Harry and Nancy home.
Tell them to include Barack while they’re at it.
Mark (3e3a7c) — 9/5/2010 @ 7:25 amTed Kennedy.
Dmac (d61c0d) — 9/5/2010 @ 8:20 amI can relate to it. I went to my dictionary and it defined UFO as an “Utterly Failing Obama”! Who says UFOs aren’t real?
Bill Fabrizio (5abdd8) — 9/5/2010 @ 8:34 am@Bill, clever. 🙂
No-bs! (6e616b) — 9/5/2010 @ 9:47 am“Mostly harmless.”
JEA (797ad1) — 9/5/2010 @ 11:06 amHmm. Is Patterico trying to be a troll on his own blog? Trying just a little to fit in with the other trolls? Or maybe after the first glass of wine he got so drunk he doesn’t remember the big binge after that point. I don’t buy the borg idea though. The borg would be smart enough to know that Obama, Reid and Pelosi would be nothing but trouble if assimilated. They’d want people good at teamwork and not totally into themselves.
Lets hope Patterico explains all after he gets over his hangover.
Jeff M (0204be) — 9/5/2010 @ 11:35 amNavy and other U.S. personnel on St Nicholas Island are involved in laser defense and missile defense technology testing. Global Security profiled the Navy’s use of St Nicholas Island in a 2005 article:
Could it have been a very large cargo ship?
DRJ (d43dcd) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:19 pmMaybe a giant cover to hide a super-sized nuclear stealth sub? It’s obviously hiding something very large.
Chris Hooten (7fcd81) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:28 pmDRJ:
It was getting dark and it was far away. But it’s not impossible. It would have had to have been very, very tall.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:32 pmI have seen the new UL car carriers one’s that carry over 6,000 cars’s off of Doha they are extremely tall boxy and wierd and one came in in May this year that caused several accidents along the corniche as people gaped at them
EricPWJohnson (2925ff) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:45 pmHey, hey, DRJ!
Dmac (d61c0d) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:48 pmTHe ship was easily 20 stories high out of the above the waterline – people cold have mistaken it for a building floating on the water
EricPWJohnson (2925ff) — 9/5/2010 @ 1:49 pmEPWJ: That sounds a lot like what I saw. It was WAY out in the ocean but 20 stories tall and boxy sounds about right. It was definitely attention-getting.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:07 pmThing is, I have seen massive cargo ships on the water many a time and this thing absolutely dwarfed them. It’s as if a regular cargo ship was a shoebox and this was a banker’s box, if that makes sense.
Patterico (c218bd) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:10 pmsorry about the fragmented sentences the new sat hookup is preventing me from actually seeing what I type
annoying
EricPWJohnson (2925ff) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:11 pmThat thing sounds huge! 6,000 cars on a gigantic floating building? Wow.
Chris Hooten (7fcd81) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:14 pmPat the new ones have very strange angles they are beyond describing I saw the Fiat ship being fitted out in the port of Venezia, they dwarf the largest cruise ships – its almost like they could fit a cruise ship inside them –
EricPWJohnson (2925ff) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:24 pmbut like SPQR said it maybe prudent to have a ready supply of lizards – just in case
EricPWJohnson (2925ff) — 9/5/2010 @ 2:25 pmSpace for 6,000 cars? I wonder if they could bring it up the Delaware River, dock it in Philly and use it as a new parking garage.
MD in Philly (3d3f72) — 9/6/2010 @ 10:30 amThis website shows where every commercial ship is:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/
If it happens again, take a look and see what ships are out there.
TomHynes (2e563b) — 9/6/2010 @ 11:41 amLOL, MD in Philly.
That actually could be a very lucrative idea. I’m thinking more Manhattan, though.
Didja know 2 of these huge freighters sink every week?
Dustin (b54cdc) — 9/6/2010 @ 12:49 pmMaybe it was Elin Woods taking HER ‘new’ yacht out for a spin.
Icy Texan (1d82f6) — 9/6/2010 @ 1:18 pm2 freighters sink every week, of this size??
