Tim Cavanaugh: L.A. Times Runs Most Biased Top Story Ever

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 4:51 pm

It may be a bit of deliberate hyperbole on Tim’s part, but it is pretty bad:

[I]t’s not Shane Goldmacher’s opinion, just straight news, that the lame-duck governor of California is sending a “gubernatorial ransom note” and “holding the state hostage” in his budget negotiations, thus repeating a “shameful chapter in California’s history” and alienating cooperative Democrats with his “ultimatums.” It is furthermore objectively true that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing this not just from an honest desire to fix Sacramento’s chronic budgeting problems but out of personal pique, that he is trying to retrofit a “fiscal system that has bedeviled California — and him — for years.”

Just the facts! That’s how they always operate at our favorite paper.

  1. Based on the way the Times is going, you may one day be their last reader.

I wonder if at that point they’ll finally listen to you ….

  2. Schwarzenegger is our governor!? Since when? According to the infallable LA Times poll back in ’03 the recall was split at 50/50 and Arnold essentially tied with Bustamante. Actually, that WOULD have explained a lot.

Oh, and for the record, any LA Times Article that does not include the phrase “der groppenfeuher” at some point can, at best, only be their second most biased story ever.

  3. Unbelievable.

  4. I know this is a bit different because Vanity Fair doesn’t pretend to be an “objective” newspaper, but in the Sept. issue (that would be the “Lady Gaga issue”), they have a big piece on how “broken” Washington is…becuase Obama’s lofty goals are stymied by “enormous bureacracy, congressional paralysis” and a “combative media.”
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No, seriously. If only those fools would step aside and let the man right all our wrongs…

  5. Forgive this threadjack, but I just saw a story on the LAT that a federal judge has put a halt to using federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. I guess this mildly reflects on Schwarzenegger since he (mistakenly, I thought) supported Proposition 71 which set up the California Stem Cell boondoggle which was supposed to lead to all these breakthroughs and bring truckloads of dollars to the state, but near as I can tell has thus far delivered bupkus.

    Back to the regularly-scheduled thread.

  6. Since we are thread jacking, this Michael Ledeen column is interesting. This could be round two in the green revolution. Maybe the Iranian air force shot down one of Ahmadinejad’s V1 buzzbombs.

When I read what Cavanaugh wrote, I figured Goldmacher’s piece made simple, declarative claims that Schwarzenegger was sending a “gubernatorial ransom note” and was “holding the state hostage”. In fact, Goldmacher writes that “some have likened his wish list to a gubernatorial ransom note” and the stuff about holding the state hostage is a quote from an assemblywoman. This does not even come close to Goldmacher stating his opinion as fact.

  8. Mike K, that was a very good story, touching on several aspects of Iran that I just don’t think get enough attention. This is why the WSJ is a real paper and the LA Times is a pathetic disgrace.

I particularly enjoyed the Ayatollah’s claim that his fatwas have the weight of the prophet Muhammad’s. I agree completely!

Sad they are going to execute over 1000 revolutionary kids, and I’m convinced Israel ‘permitted’ the Bushehr reactor to be fueled because they simply lack the capability of dealing with Iran’s various facilities for nukes. I really think the only force that could have stopped Iran was the US Air Force, and the only man who could have made the call was Dubya. Wish he had.
