Homes and Homeless in El Paso

Even though they live in Mexico, the new Mayor of Juarez and his wife have claimed a homestead exemption on their El Paso, Texas, residence for 13 years. This is a good example of how the dividing line between Juarez and El Paso is becoming increasingly blurred, but this El Paso homeless man knows the difference:

  1. How can TX grant a Homestead Exemption to someone whose primary residence is in a foreign country?
    What civil-servant approved this?
If I was a property owner in El Paso Co. I would be filing a lawsuit against Héctor and Patricia Murguía for fraud, and would seek class-action status.

  2. Would file the suit against the bureaucrat who granted the exemption.

  3. Seems open and shut to me. This exemption isn’t for a vacation home. And you probably can’t run for mayor of Juarez if you don’t live there, either.

It’s interesting that Mexican government is so bad the politicians commute from different countries for their own safety. Maybe the citizens of your cities would like to live too, Mayor. Might want to make Juarez livable.

  4. It’s no wonder Calderon and other Mexican politicians think the border is ludicrous.

  5. My dad lives along the Mexican boarder in Texas and has for many years (Harlingen) It is not uncommon for wealthy Mexicans to own property in South Texas for now what should be obvious reasons-political and civil stability. They can get there quick when the s**t hits the fan. While I did not know about the exemptions, it doesn’t surprise me. You have to remember, the vast majority of elected officials in south Texas are Mexican-American. They too have relatives in Mexico or are from there originally. The attitude towards the boarder is very different than what you would find in many other places, right or wrong it is much more relaxed.
