Mary Jo Kopechne’s Death Now an “Indiscretion”

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 3:26 pm

From USA Today:

Call it the ‘Prince Hal Syndrome,’ after Shakespeare’s Henry V, who renounced a youth of carousing to become a noble warrior king: George W. Bush overcomes an abusive relationship with alcohol and becomes president; Edward M. Kennedy transcends not-so-youthful indiscretions too numerous to list here to become a respected Senate elder.

Indiscretions?

P.S. It has been wonderful to watch all the encomiums directed at Robert Byrd — things people like Trent Lott weren’t allowed to say about Strom Thurmond. Which one is on record saying the “n-word” as a Senator again?

I think it’s my disgust with the way everyone has whitewashed (thank you, thank you very much) his background that makes this admittedly juvenile video amusing to me. Warning: it contains harsh racial language, which should not be condoned unless you are a sitting U.S. Senator who is a Democrat.

  4. Clinton got it right this time.

    I love the fly soundover.

It’s particularly sad what the NAACP, formerly a heroic and amazing organization, is reduced to. Celebrating someone who hated them, and only because he controls so much money.

  5. Crikes, fifty-one years in the Senate.

At the very least, that’s thirty-nine years too long.

  6. A little background on the strange life of Mary Jo Kopechne:

Before Mary Jo Kopechne met her fate in the back seat of Ted Kennedy’s sedan, she was a secretary for Florida Senator George Smathers.

She also shared a condo with party girl Nancy Tyler, who was Bobby Baker’s secretary. Working for Smathers, Mary Jo learned that JFK had sounded out Smathers, among one or two others, to see if he would agree to replace LBJ in the VP spot on the 1964 Democrat ticket.

Mary Jo possessed the most important bit of information in all of Washington DC in the early Fall of 1963. If JFK replaced him, LBJ was going to be out of office, out of national politics, and out in the cold, and JFK and his brother RFK were going to slam the door behind him. Congress was already breathing down LBJ’s neck on several corruption scandals.

But, Kennedy was murdered in Dallas and LBJ became President. However, before long, Mary Jo found other employment, she went to work in Robert Kennedy’s office. She was working for him when he was gunned down in Los Angeles after winning the California Primary.

Then Mary Jo went to work for Ted Kennedy and you already know the official version of that story.

  9. Conspiracy theories? We don’t need no stinkin’ conspiracy theories.

The memory of three Kennedy brothers along with the shade of Mary Jo sleeps with the fishes.

  13. That’s FOUR Kennedy brothers! You don’t really think that “they” were NOT involved in the explosion of Joe Kennedy’s plane in WWII, do you? Of course “they” were.

It was all part of the plan that culminated in the abduction of David Duchovny’s sister.
