Violence Escalates on Texas-Mexico Border

Filed under: International — DRJ @ 10:22 pm

Six to seven shots went through a wall of the El Paso, Texas, City Hall today. Officials believe the shots were fired from Juarez. The El Paso City Hall is about a mile from the River, and city workers were in the building at the time the shots were fired.

In addition, Mexican politician Rodolfo Torre was gunned down today with at least three members of his staff. Torre was the leading candidate in Sunday’s Gubernatorial election in the border state of Tamaulipas. Mexican President Calderon termed his murder an escalation in the drug wars. Tamaulipas borders South Texas across from Brownsville.

Thus, from tip to tip, violence is escalating on the Texas border.

  1. And the token president makes a token gesture of sending a few troops to increase border security.

  2. This is the exact same city where the gay taco kiss happened.

  3. Jimmy Nap says the border has never been more secure. Although, technically no one crossed the border to perform this outrage apparently. I am sick of the constant whining in the AZ Republic both in the editorials and the letters page. It’s anever ending carousel of
    1) A fence will never completely close the border.
    2) Only employer sanctions will work.
    3) Troops on the border would just be a waste of money.
They deal in absolutes and state that if any of the above is not 100% effective, then it is pointless. Truth is, a combination of all three will go a long way to securing our nation. If they wanted to. But as we all know, they do not!
By allowing this to continue to percolate, the push back when it comes, and it will, is going to be quite ugly. It did not have to be this way.

  5. The funny thing about Napolitano is that while she was still governor, and Bush was still POTUS, she routinely asked the feds for more troops on the border.

Now? Well, it seems that “the system worked”.

  6. Also, AZ Treasurer Dean Martin (Iknow, I know) send the feds a bill for $1B to cover the costs of incarcerating illegals. Nappy ignored him. Despite pulling the exact same stunt when she was Gov And GWB was Prez.

  7. Used to be that Texan’s would have shot back…

  8. It would be nice to know where, exactly, the shots came from before you just unleashed a four-hour artillery barrage – though that might work.

  9. The border has never been more secure, and Obama is sending a full 250 troops to aid Texas in border control. These troops are more than enough for Texas’s tiny border, though they will not be actually patrolling it.

    LOL.

Gazzer’s right, this is a good example of a situation that is getting out of hand because people won’t make improvements that are imperfect. We could greatly reduce the massive trafficking of drugs and people into our country. This would weaken the Mexican drug lords and make our country safer and better. It wouldn’t be perfect, but nothing is.

And as crazy and nutty as it sounds, we do need to shoot back. This isn’t the first time shots or rocks are fired into our country. We need to have a deterrent. One major problem is that these drug lords do not have anyone to fear.

  10. This incident is clearly the fault of the racists living in Texas. If they cared about their security and the civil rights of Mexicans they would have built a mile high earth berm all the way along the border to stop incidents like this.

Or maybe a five mile high chain link fence supported by helium balloons.

/sarc (if it is needed) (which troll was that? I can’t recall his handle, was he one of the ones who has shown up in new guise?)

  11. I’ve shot long-distance competitively (1000+ yards) and six or seven rounds in a building from a mile away is no accident. They were aiming for the City Hall, no doubt about it.

  12. The border has never been more secure…

Was that Mayor Kumbaya of El Paso that said this? I know it that it wasn’t, but it might as well been.

Let’s not forget the mayor of Juarez lives in El Paso.

  13. Can you just imagine the outrage that would be emanating from Mexico City if rifle-fire from any Texas city impacted the City Hall of the Mexican city across the river?

    Note to self:
Set up website to coordinate volley-fire along the river from Brownsville to El Paso.

  14. mmm, makes me wonder if arizona is causing more illegals to go through texas, thus contributing to the problem.

We have exactly two options: 1) we can either truly shut down the border or 2) we invade mexico and straighten that clusterf— of a country out. i tend to lean toward option 1, but there are times when option 2 sound like a better choice. make then territories for a while, and then eventually make them states in the U.S. problem solved.

Meanwhile, Obama is apparently working on an exit strategy for Arizona.

What? If Mexico pays us back some of the money from the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, and all the money from the Gadsen Purchase, he’ll give them back AZ south of the Grand Canyon?

  17. Mexico will become, sometime in the next 5 to 10 years, our very own Afghanistan.

  18. If we had a POTUS with any discernible gonads, he’d tell the Mexican President to either get the border conflicts under control or we’ll do it for him. It’s a simple proposition – you shoot a few bullets at us, we’ll take out the drug lord’s bases of operations. It’s already been well established that too many of the Mexican police and military are on the take from the drug kingpins, so we may have no choice in the end.
