Wimbledon Tennis Match is Longest Ever
[Guest post by DRJ]
A Wimbledon tennis match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut has been halted on the second day due to darkness. The match is tied at 59-59 in the 5th set and will resume Thursday.
Wow.

The happiest person is the winner’s next opponent.

Great game by the Americans in the World Cup today. Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

SPQR (26be8b) — 6/23/2010 @ 8:01 pmgreat sports on the courts and on the pitch for the USA today.
I wonder what the ultimate toll on these two tennis players will be from an orthopaedic? view….89 aces … what does that do to the shoulder during such a (relatively) short period of time?

Interesting thought. I’m guessing the closest comparison would be a pro baseball pitcher who throws mainly fastballs. In the old days a starting pitcher often went over 100 pitches in a game, I think more like 80+ today before a reliever goes in. But that’s over a 2- 2 1/2 hour game.
Now with a tennis serve there is a larger arc and potentially more leverage on the shoulder along with absorbing impact of racket on ball, as opposed to the smooth motion of a pitch.
On the other hand, you would never ask a starting pitcher to pitch again after only one day’s rest, and I think tennis players do that often.
From what I understand, though, pro tennis players practice many, many hours.

And at this point, the fact that one of them won seems trivial…
For the record, final set was Isner 70 Mahut 68
