Afghans AWOL in Texas

The JAWA Report notes a Fox News exclusive that 17 members of the Afghan military studying English at Texas’ Lackland AFB have gone AWOL in the past 2 years:

“A nationwide alert has been issued for 17 members of the Afghan military who have gone AWOL from a Texas Air Force base where foreign military officers who are training to become pilots are taught English, FoxNews.com has learned.”

Some have been AWOL for as long as two years and we’re just hearing about it now? I assume these Afghans are security threats but I’m holding out hope they’re living the good life in America.

  1. May I ask why it was necessary to bring them to the CONUS to learn English?

  2. If you lived in Afghanistan, and then came to America, but had to go back to get shot at, you might think about staying, too. I’m sure they are keeping an eye out for them.

  3. I live in San Antonio, have friends at Lackland and am just hearing this.

    What’s up with that?

  4. I guess the authorities at Lackland have been trying to figure out how to do an Amber alert. After two years they finally figured it out.

  5. There are no facilities to learn English in their homeland? I suspect these people were seen as likely double-agents and were brought here to schmooze. Well, they may have been double agents already it seems.

  6. I’m sure it’s very important for us to worry about AWOL Afghanis running around the US. But I want to know if our military bases are using solar energy to save us from our dependence on foreign oil!!!

  7. These men were obviously selected by the DoD in Afghanistan to become pilots in the re-trained and re-formulated Afghan Army, and the best way to teach them the English they need for a career in aviation, is to put them into an immersion program within the U.S.
I believe that Kelly AFB (the next door neighbor of Lackland AFB which has no runway) is where a lot of foreign-military training is conducted by the AF.
Lackland is the Basic Training Base for the Air Force, where Enlisted, Non-Commissioned, and Commissioned Officers, receive training.
It would be natural to have these men, along with others from countries around the world, to be learning the language there before beginning flight training at Kelly.
