Media Growing Leery of Obama

Filed under: Obama — DRJ @ 9:36 am

[Guest post by DRJ]

Last night it was MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, and Howard Fineman questioning President Obama’s handling of the Oil Spill, including this statement by Matthews:

Ludicrous that he keeps saying [Secretary of Energy] Chu has a Nobel prize. “I’ll barf if he does it one more time.”

Today it’s Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson. Apparently the media’s new talking points are that President Obama relies too much on Steven Chu’s irrelevant Nobel Prize:

“Less than a minute into President Obama’s Oval Office address, my heart sank. For the umpteenth time since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill began, an anxious nation was informed that Energy Secretary Steven Chu has a Nobel Prize. Obama’s speech pretty much went down hill from there.”

Is it possible Robinson is beginning to realize that President Obama is all hat and no cattle?

“The president was cool, determined, forceful — stylistically, all the things that the braying commentators said he had to be. But where was the substance? Specifically — and urgently — where was the new plan to contain the oil spill and protect the coastline? I wish I’d heard the president order the kind of all-out marshaling and deployment of resources that now seems imperative. But I didn’t.

Instead, I heard about a special commission to study the accident. I heard about new leadership at the agency that oversees offshore drilling. I heard about a new long-term restoration plan for the gulf region. All of this is great — but what about the oil?”

Style vs substance? I prefer Door #2, but I’m virtually certain the media and President Obama will someday kiss and make up.

HELLO? It takes more than writing papers and “lecturing” to actually BE the POTUS. What a bunch of yahoos!

  4. The Nobel Prize is the ne plus ultra for the liberal elite. It’s like Captain America’s shield or Thor’s hammer — something that they consider the source of their own immense power. That’s why every third-rate politician lusts after the Nobel Peace Prize, since they don’t have the brainpower to win on for science.

When Eugene Robinson as well as Chris Matthews start criticizing Obama, and harshly at that, it suggests there may be hope yet.

But it is still a little confusing, as it would seem that Matthews et. al. truly believed all of the hype originally and still believe the liberal narrative, but are disappointed at how poorly Obama is living up to the promise.

Maybe at some point they will begin to question their underlying assumptions, too.

  6. Obama to name a competence czar

From Paco World News Daily (PWN’D):

Reeling from public criticism – of everything from a chaotic foreign policy to mishandling the oil spill crisis to sponsoring ineffective or, as some say, disastrous economic initiatives – President Obama told reporters today that he planned to name a “competence czar”.

“No man is an island,” the beleaguered president told the Press, after nine holes of golf in humid, 89-degree heat. “Delegation is what made this country great, and, although George Bush forgot that fact, to the nation’s detriment, I intend to restore the concept of teamwork to government.”

    Heh!

  7. Ultimately, the MFM types are not disagreeing with the message, or really, even the messenger. They just have a problem with the delivery. But, it is a step in the right direction. About 345,918,659,362,490,736 more and they will see objectivity on the horizon.

  8. I am giving 10:1 odds that every one of these Democrats posing as journalists will be completely in the bag for Obama in 2012–if not by September 2010.

They are just wh@res who are trying to dress modestly one day a week–the rest of the week they are streetwalking and selling themselves cheap.

  9. i am with DRJ. the left can’t avoid criticizing him right now, but i am sure before long they will find some excuse to claim he is making a comeback and has now become the greatest president in human history.

My guess is that they will make this comeback kid argument after the republicans take over, on the bill clinton model.

    Sigh.

  10. Ah, the Nobel prize, the pinnacle of what it requires to be a world class leader. Except when you really need a world class leader, and you realize accomplishment and experience are a little more relevant.

Yes iconoclast, they are prostitutes. At least the ‘journalists’ of the Matthews strip. They have traded their allegiance for money. They are establishing their ‘we’re so fair’ bona fides. Strange they all came out in unison as though this is coordinated.

  14. Can we dispense with the notion that a Nobel means anything beyond a blessing from the PC community? Krugman has a Nobel and he thinks The One is screwing it up by not burning money fast enough. One could find deeper thinking at the local elementary school.

  19. Take a list of who has won the Nobel prize.

None of them could find their own ass with both hands.

I care about the Nobel Prize about as much as I care to ear crushed glass. Who gives 2 shits.

A physicist who told us to paint our roof white to save the planet has a Nobel and runs the Energy dept. He shouldn’t run the children toy department at Wal Mart, he hasn’t the skills for that type of job. He should stick to splitting atoms or whatever physicists do. Maybe he invent the wind powered 747 size UNICORN ONE.

  20. Even MoDo is growing weary as the president went for his fourth-quarter, Michael Jordan, down-to-the-wire, thrill shot in the Oval Office, his first such dramatic address to a nation sick about the slick.,

How can a man who was a dazzling enough politician to become the first black president at age 47 suddenly become so obdurately self-destructive about politics?

President Obama’s bloodless quality about people and events, the emotional detachment that his aides said allowed him to see things more clearly, has instead obscured his vision. It has made him unable to understand things quickly on a visceral level and put him on the defensive in this spring of our discontent, failing to understand that Americans are upset that a series of greedy corporations have screwed over the little guy without enough fierce and immediate pushback from the president.

  22. Isn’t Chu’s Nobel in physics? Something along the line of how to freeze atoms after splitting them? Uh, wait a minute. What was being talked about on how to stop the gushing?

Obama should call Bush to head the clean up. An oil man. Bush wouldn’t turn it down and that way Obama could really blame Bush.

Bottom line is Chrissy, Oberdork, etc., are just screaming so they can appear to be journalists. Then, as stated above they’ll do the Clinton comeback thing. When Repubs retake in Nov, the “leadership” quality will come back in vogue as legislation gets passed and the Chrissy’s of the world will say “What leadership!! Just imagine what would have passed if not for Obama’s leadership against the far right. He’s got our whole future in his hands.” Then they’ll all get together and watch Chrissy’s leg tingle.

At the end of the day, these folks aren’t going to admit they misjudged the man. And the slogan in 2012 will be, he’s been there, he’s done that president thing. He has experience. . . and you Mr. Republican challenger? They’ll sell him again on doing nothing but being there. Everyday this is more like the Chauncey the Gardner Presidency. . . unfortunately not as funny and not as entertaining.

I guess he’s recovered from the shock of seeing the Emperor has no clothes and is back into distract and attack the other guy mode.

I say bring it on. The Right doesn’t hate Mexicans, the Right just hates being told to stay out of national parks occupied by foreign nationals.

  26. I equate the situation with all the pundits and MSM supporters of Obama the same as when all the Jonestown followers realized that their leader and mentor was taking them to a place from which they wouldn’t survive and when some of them had an epiphany that the guy was nuts. Obama is making them all look foolish, he’s sacrificing Democrats in the Senate and House, the MSM is constantly defending the charges that he’s an empty suit, lacks executive experience, and is an ineffective leader and idealogue and… he proves it. Here’s a summary of an Obama speech (any speech): platitudes, generalizations, straw man argument, bumper sticker slogans, a couple of untrue statements that tie into a far left radical ideology and now… people yawning and falling asleep in the audience.

The dressing modestly one day a week analogy is a good thought, more in line with what seems to be true over time.

  29. I do not recall any of them actually questioning whether Cap & Trade is a good idea, a sane idea, or something that should be pushed in this economic climate, or ever, for that matter. The MFM seems to work from the assumption that if it is couched in terms of being good for the environment, then it is good. I didn’t see any of the MFM people noting that he used his first Oval Office address to pimp out the oil spill to push his hyper-partisan legislation. The only whining was that he did not give enough details as to what he will be doing, so they did not have anything to work with.

Obama means to remind us that HE also has a nobel. So he’s not really incompetent, see?

    Fen (4d70d1)

  31. To be fair, people, a Nobel Prize in Physics IS an accomplishment. It’s just that furthering knowledge about laser cooling is not the best kind of accomplishment for a Cabinet position, and has absolutely no relevance to the particular crisis at hand.
