How Did Greene Win? (Updated)

Democrats are perplexed how Alvin Greene won the South Carolina Senate primary:

“Greene admits he had no campaign headquarters, no party support, no contributions, no job, no computer and no cell phone.

Yet, somehow, he managed to pull off the most unlikely of victories, and — unless state Democratic Party officials have their way — will face incumbent Republican Sen. Jim DeMint in November.”

In addition to a pending felony charge, the report notes that Greene acknowledged he was granted an involuntary but honorable discharge from the military in 2009. He has been receiving unemployment benefits for 9 months. At least one Democrat wants an investigation into Greene’s candidacy:

“U.S. House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., called Greene a “plant” and has demanded an investigation into his candidacy.”

Anyone here have an idea how an unknown, unemployed, unassisted, and unfunded candidate can get almost 60% of South Carolina’s Democratic votes?

UPDATE — A polling firm’s analysis of the race:

“A polling information center has concluded the surprise primary victory for Alvin Greene was not a GOP plot, but a completely random outcome based on an election in which both candidates were unknown.

“I don’t see any evidence of GOP chicanery,” said Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling.”

Nebraska has voted to accept the Big 10’s offer and will become the 12th member of the Big 10.

Meanwhile, Boise State has joined the Mountain West Conference, and the University of Texas Regents have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to decide UT’s destination (which almost certainly will be the Pac-10).
