It’s Official: Nebraska Goes to Big 10

Filed under: Sports — DRJ @ 12:00 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Nebraska has voted to accept the Big 10’s offer and will become the 12th member of the Big 10.

Meanwhile, Boise State has joined the Mountain West Conference, and the University of Texas Regents have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to decide UT’s destination (which almost certainly will be the Pac-10).

  3. Dopey,

I won’t be sad to see the Big 12 end, either, but do you think Nebraska will win more in the Big 10? That seems like a pretty tough conference to me.

    There’s something wrong here…

  5. DRJ-

Sure its a tough conference, but no tougher arguably than the Big 12. We can compete with any conference in Football. In Basketball, well…..things will be about the same. We should compete pretty well in Baseball.

Now Im not saying were going to the Rose Bowl every year…. Probably just 4 out of every 6 years.

  6. I imagine Nebraska will do pretty well in baseball. Not sure even how many Big Ten teams have baseball (WIS stopped years ago- but Paul Molitor played at Minnesota, so it has been done!). I think Nebraska has been good in wrestling, traditionally, and will need to tangle with Iowa (as well as WIS and others). I don’t think Nebraska has hockey, but then neither do many Big ten schools, and those that play hockey are organized in specific hockey associations. Many Big Ten schools don’t have fencing, don’t know about nebraska, but penn state and OSU are always among the tops in the nation. Soccer, track, etc, etc.??

Football, over the last 15-20 years the Big Ten has been won by (West to East): Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern (yeah, once), Michigan (I think), Ohio State, and Penn State. (Illinois represented the Big Ten once in the Rose Bowl when OSU was champ and went to Championship Game, Mich State has won the Big Ten, but I don’t think in the last 20 years, Purdue likewise has had very good teams, but I don’t think they’ve won a conf. championship recently).

Yes, Ohio State has stunk up the Championship Game a few times, but often the Big Ten has a winning record in bowl games, not too long ago it was 5-2.

I think the Big Ten has done poorly in Championship games for two main reasons (not necessarily in order)
    1. No matter how hard the coaches want to focus on football, there are all kinds of mandatory promotional events. People on the West Coast or in the South are used to it being relatively warm, etc., in Jan. Between the novelty of the weather and surroundings and the PR events, most of the Big Ten gets a little over-loaded, I think.
    2. Traditionally the Big Ten has a season that ends much earlier than other conferences, especially if there is a conference championship game. I think one year OSU had its last game on November 9th, almost a 2 month lay-off without a game.

I confess a bit of an error previosuly, I think the Wisconsin cheer is “Let’s Go Red”, not “Go Big Red”. Still, it could get confusing…

  7. I’ll be here all week DRJ 🙂

Nebraska will win much more (football) in the Big 10(+) than the Bye12; with only Michigan(natch) and OSU to compete with (at the moment only OSU it seems); a 2nd or 1st place finish seems assured… if they can get the defense back to black-shirt standards.

  8. Does this mean that the Big 10 is now the Big 12 and the Big 12 is now the Big 10?

Sir, while I gladly give the honor which you deserve, I am afraid to say you know very little about Big Ten (Eleven, now Twelve) Football.

Tha “school up north” as it is called by some diehards, has not lived up to its mascot’s reputation for many a year, though it has been a spoiler on occasion. It has been a loonnngggg time since it was the “Big Two” and Little 8″. Nebraska will not be joining the “Big Three”. A 2nd or 1st place does not seem assured.

Nebraska has 5 National Championships since 1970 (but none in 2000+). Big Ten has 5 National Championships since 1970, with OSU being the most recent (2002?). Michigan has 1, Penn St has 2, and OSU has 2 = 5 total in the modern era.

Oh, I forgot, one of those Nebraska National Championship Bowl Victories left out undefeated Penn State with Kerry Collins, Ki-jana Carter, Bobby Ingram and others. At least that will never happen again.

Let’s Go Red!!!! (Wisconsin Badgers, that is.)

  10. Its about the money gang. The Big Ten (I’m an IU grad)has a basic communist view on revenue sharing. (the big piece being TV revenue). Why do you think Northwestern chooses to remain in the conference? (The only non-public school in the group) Obviously Nebraska can add to the pot and get better rewards..

  11. This weblog appears to recieve a great deal of visitors. How do you advertise it? It offers a nice individual twist on things. I guess having something authentic or substantial to say is the most important factor.
