Screening Immigrants in the Gulf Cleanup

A suburban New Orleans Sheriff is screening for illegal immigrants among the BP clean-up workers:

“St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jack A. Stephens says in a news release that his department asked Immigration and Customs Enforcement weeks ago to look into the reports.

Stephens says he wants to protect the community from “criminal elements” seeking to establish “criminal enterprises.” He says “we’re not worried about people who want to earn an honest buck.”

Setting up checkpoints goes even further than the Arizona law. Any bets on how long it will take federal officials to try to stop him?

  1. Again, for all the people who get irritable about this: how does Mexico treat illegal immigration from Guatamala?

And if you think we are better, try to say: “We are far, far better than Mexico.” Most progressives have trouble saying that. They temporize about Western domination and suppression of indigenous values and so forth.

But I did love the wonderful bit where the President of Mexico excoriated the US for its treatment of illegal immigrants. And no one asked him about Mexico’s policies.

    Because…that’s different™!

  2. But CNN did ask him the relevant question, and he replied that illegal immigrants are always questioned in public when suspicions are aroused, and then asked for their papers. Blitzer further asked what Mexico does when they discover illegals – “we deport them, immediately!”

You cannot make this stuff up.

Well, why the heck not? There’s a gajillion unemployed fishermen down there who could probably use the jobs, and the labor market is probably over-supplied already. Why would he NOT want to keep out folks who will steal jobs, and dilute everyone’s wages in a time of crisis?

  4. Dmac, they do a lot more than deport many of those people. But I notice our brothers and sisters on the Left don’t say much about that.

My guess is that they would have called the ancient Aztecs’ sacrificial practices as “cardiac redistributionalism.”
