Primary Tuesday

Politico says there are 9 races to watch in today’s elections:

  • Arkansas Senate. Union favorite Lt. Gov. Bill Halter is a 5 point favorite over incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln.
  • South Carolina Governor. Making TV wrestling drama look tame, the SC Governor’s race shows Nikki Haley with a commanding lead.
  • South Carolina 4th District. Incumbent Representative Bob Inglis has reportedly opposed the Iraq surge and other conservative positions, leading him to run 2nd in his primary race.
  • Nevada Senate. In the saga of Harry “the Comeback Kid” Reid vs the Republicans, who will the GOP pick to take on the Kid?
  • Nevada Governor. Will Nevada Republicans turn out sitting Governor Jim Gibbons, who polls dismally against likely Democratic candidate Rory Reid (son of Harry)? Gibbons’ GOP opponent Brian Sandoval thinks he can do it.
  • California Governor. We’ll soon know whether Meg Whitman or Steve Poizner will face Jerry Brown next November.
  • California Senate. Admit it, these are the races of the day for Patterico.com fans. Will Fiorino beat Campbell and DeVore? Can Boxer hold out against Kaus?
  • Iowa Governor. Former Iowa GOP Gov. Terry Branstad returns. If he wins, he could give first-term Gov. Chet Culver a run for his money.
  • Virginia 5th District. Vulnerable freshman Democratic Rep. Thomas Perriello finds out today who his GOP opponent will be in November. Politico says this race will say a lot about the Tea Party.
  • Personally I’m watching Arkansas, California and Nevada.

    1. DRJ,

I have to disagree with you about Branstad. Iowa is sick of him and his squishiness. The TEA Party is endorsing Bob Vander Plaats, and that’s who I’m voting for.

    2. PCD, I agree with you. I’m disappointed that everyone is endorsing Branstad. We could obviously do worse, but I think we could do a bit better, too. I think too many people are trying to be the kingmaker and line up endorsements for them (from Branstad et al) in a couple of years.

And Iowa has got to get the worst of this.

    3. (not that DRJ endorsed anybody, I was talking mainly about Palin of course).

    4. I cannot stand Republicans, but dislike Dems even more. So, today I will be hoping that Halter, Haley, not Inglis, not Reid, Sandoval, Whitman, Fiorino, and Brandstad. I wish there were more people that cared about individual liberty and less about the importance of government.

    5. JD, if you care about individual liberty, you cannot support Branstad. Branstad who hired Bob Kerrey’s sister to run the Iowa Department of Human Services who hired a social worker by the name of Eeg who ignored the brutalizing of Shelby Duis until she was killed by her mother’s boyfriend, and the State Police and Iowa citizens were demanding where was DHS to remove this child from the home.

That’s a very tenous chain of responsibility.
Did Branstad know that “Bob Kerrey’s sister” was going to hire “Eeg”? And, did she directly hire “Eeg”, or was this just another hire by the bureaucracy?
Yes, Governor’s are responsible for all the good and bad that happens during their administration, but you have a tremendous mountain to climb to give Branstad direct responsibility for the lapses of one individual within his administration that he probably never knew the name of, let alone met; particularly when that individual is as far removed from him as it appears that “Eeg” was.

    8. The other choice is VanderPlaat, endorsed by Huck, who’s big platform is the anti gay marriage amendment, pick your poison

    9. I don’t know what happened to Inglis in the last 2 years… He was in the class of ’96 got out after 6 years per “the pledge” which other congressman cheated on it, and got beat in the race for Senator in 2002. Jim DeMint took over from him did the same 6 year bit, but was successful in taking the open seat Fritz Hollings left in 2008. He asked us, his loyal constituency, if he could get back his old seat seeing as he did honor his original pledge, and he had been out of Washington for 6 years. BUT… since he came back he’s not the old Inglis, he opposed ANWAR drilling and a few other things that has had me calling his office quite a bit.

    10. AD, Branstad knew of the MANY lapses of judgement by Jessie Rassmussen. It was put in his face daily by activists like me and then State Senator Steve King who now represents Iowa’s 5th Congressional district.

    11. PCD…Well then, vote against him. That’s what elections are for, are they not?
If he did not hold her accountable, then he should be held accountable for his lack of action.
In far too many cases we step back from shaming those in the public eye for their deficiencies.
But, in the end, it is for the voting public at large to render a judgement as to who will be a better representative of the People, and we frequently do not get the best of choices, but only the least bad.

    12. OK, just peeking into this situation, I’m trying to figure out the grave injustice, yes she had worked

    13. I hope Gibbons loses. He is a walking sexual harassment suit. Unfortunately for me, I’m a registered Libertarian, so I don’t get to vote for someone else this time around.

      Some chump (967a70)

    14. Some Chump – FOX called that for Sandoval ten minutes after the polls closed. Gibbons was getting 25% to 56% from Sandoval with 14% of the vote counted.
